In the August issue of Shonen Jump magazine (not yet for sale) there will be an interview with the team that is producing the Naruto anime series for VIZ Media that will be airing on Cartoon Network this September. According to the producers the series has been fully cast, the first season of 52 episodes has been completely written, and they are currently working on the music for the series, which will remain mostly from the original Japanese version. Interestingly they sound like they are taking great care in making the series as close as possible to what we are used to, however that looks to not include the original technique names.

Below is an Q&A excerpt.

Naruto - Behind the Scenes
Like us, you're salivating for the English-language debut of Naruto, your favorite ninja anime. What in the world can you do to bide your time? Well, you can check in with SHONEN JUMP, which has been bringing you the Naruto manga from the beginning, for details about the anime's production process. This month, we interview the team that's bringing Naruto to our shores. And we have some sneak peeks of images from the second episode!

Q: What's the latest milestone the production has hit?
A: The show has been cast, and the scripts for the first season, all 52 episodes, are being written, and of course we're adapting the scripts so they stay in line with the flavor of the original Japanese anime.

Q: What was the casting like?
A: The process is we go through a bunch of voice actors who have experience in dubbing, some of whom may not have any prior anime experience but have great voices and rich acting experience. We want to keep it fresh. The studio we're working with brings in actors for a variety of roles, so someone might try out for Iruka and Kakashi, or for Naruto and Sakura. That might sound weird, but some of these actors can really switch between roles.

Q: Which character was the hardest to cast?
A: Naruto, plain and simple. He's the number one character, the star. You want to pin it down just right. The voice of the person we selected has Naruto down, from the michievous side, that precious 12-year-old we learn to love, to the serious side. Our Naruto can make you laugh, and hit you with a jutsu, right on a dime.

Q: How many people did you audition for that role?
A: A whole bunch- we tried to find actors of various voices and styles.

Q: Who was the easiest to cast?
A: No one was easy. You had to go back and forth, trying to decide who is best for which role. You can talk about it for hours on end. It made for a lively debate.

Q: In the end, was anyone cast to do more than one voice?
A: No. It wasn't a conscious decision, and had an actor been able to make that leap, we would have done it, but we wanted to create a contrast between characters, like between Naruto and Sasuke, who are rivales and brothers in arms. Those two voices, for example, had to contrast well. When you have two characters contrasting strengths but the same age, it's important their voices differ in sound and attitude, so the differences come through and the characters come to life.

Q: Did you learn anything about the characters during the course of the auditions?
A: Yes, listening to the Japanese actors and, later, to the English-language ones shed light on the characters' motivations. From the onset, these heroes and villains have motivation. We don't have to wait until episode 10 to find out what they're all about. We know Sakura wants to impress Sasuke, and that Naruto wants to be the Hokage, and their drive comes through their voices.

Q: What's ahead for the production?
A: We're still working on music production, but for the most part we'll be using the original music from Japan, becasue that helps make the series great. We're going to start recording the first four episodes of Naruto and get them ready to air in September.

Q: Will all the actors work together in the studio?
A: Unlike in Japan, each actor comes to the studio individually. When you're dubbing anime, dubbing to flap - that is, matching the shape of the characters' mouths - that's the best way to do it. It's so precise, in terms of matching flap, that each actor needs to have their individual attention on the screen. Even though the actors play off each other, it would be very hard to have them in the sound booth together. The way we do it, each character's individuality can shine through the best.

Q: Are there any surprises in the early episodes?
A: If there are surprises, I'm not telling.

Scenes from Episode 2
1. Naruto gives Konohamaru, aka the "Honored Grandson" a piece of his mind.

3. Three's a crowd when the master and the two ninja-in-training meet up.

One thing I noted from this is that it's being called Doppleganger skill and not Shadow Replication but I guess I'll survive. :(

Oh well. I would have prefered Shadow Replication as well, but what can you do. Man, what an awkward word. I don't think I'm going to enjoy hearing Doppleganger over and over again, but I'll probably get used to it.

Many of us have seen the first movie, there was some discussion about it a while back. I haven't seen the second one yet.

I will warn you about Rock Lee. For most he's just annoying at first and a mild amusement. You'll meet him around episode 26, around 35 he does some cool stuff and episodes 48, 49 and 50---if you're not a Rock Lee man by then; you deserve to be shot and beaten.

It was never explained how he broke thru his guard, but if you use frame- by-frame, you could see the impact of about 5-7 kicks going thru Sasuke's defensive block & finally hitting him! I like that scene the best b-cuz they went thru the trouble of showing detail. That's something they gave up on doing in DBZ....:p

Naruto will debut on Cartoon Network on... Saturday, Sept. 10, at 9:00pm, as part of the Toonami block. Episode 1 will run at 9:00pm, and Episode 2 will run at 9:30pm. Yeah, two in a row. Then, Cartoon Network will repeat Episode 1 at 10:00pm and Episode 2 at 10:30pm.

The following Saturday, Sept. 17, Naruto will settle into its regular weekly broadcast schedule: 9:00pm.

-Animaze is producing the English dub

-Marc Handler is going to be a writer/director for the English ADR. FYI, Handler worked on the English dubs for COWBOY BEBOP and FLCL.

-Stephanie Sheh is the English voice actress for Hinata Hyuuga

-Steve Kramer is the voice of Sandaime, or The Third Hokage, Sarutobi.

-Naruto WILL be edited for TOONAMI, but the uncut episodes will be available on DVD. So take it or leave it.

This show needs more Gaara. Just whatched sasuke vs naruto fight. Noticed his nine tails red chakra only had one tail so i would guess that no where near the full extent of his power.

I noticed that myself, but I didn't think about it in that way.

It would be cool if he did have nine levels of power to unlock. A bit DBZ, but that would be cool. And it would explain why Sasuke won, I thought Orochimaru's cursed seal being more powerful that a fully powered Demon was a bit iffy.

Sasuke spent a day in a barrel being carried around. Naruto was running after him and being raped by Kimimaro.

Viz made an announcement about Naruto on DVD at Comic-Con. According to their presentation, they will release two versions: bimonthly, edited DVDs with 4 episodes per volume starting in March 2006 and uncut, DVD boxsets with 13 episodes per set starting in July 2006.

Something I've been wondering for a while, Luffy's strength: Natural like Zoro's or enhanced by The Devil's Fruit? Because it seems that everyone who has eaten a fruit is stronger than most. Yet if Zoro can have that kind of strength, then some are just born that way.

And is it me, or do all those who've eaten the fruit have an subconscious desire to seek each other out and destroy each other? Granted some band together, but the leaders of the group seem to "by chance" run into others who possess the Devil's Fruit power.

Yeah, in the show it's pretty apparent that Luffy's not the kind of person concerned with any kind of formal training. He mostly relies on his own dertermination, tenacity, and his own special brand of on the spot, spontaneous ingenuity during fights.

This filler arc is horrible. A ninja prison where they leave tools open right in front of prisoners and tolerate two cell mates who can just walk around of their free will and pacify them with food is just idiotic. It hasn't gotten any better since that episode either.

I got the 512k conection speed for 17.99 now that package is up to 2 meg but they charge you 20 quid to upgrade the speed and the limit is only 6 gig a month thos it said 15 gig in the letter i got. You can Dattebayo. They're not as good as AonE, but you should be able to watch the episode.

As for your video problem, you can try wtaching it in an alternative player, like Divx, BS player or VLC VideoLAN. One of them might be able to automatically compensate and balance the audiosync. But if it's just the one episode that's doing that, then the file must be messed up.

What player are you using to view the episode?

Ok, I read this and accepted it. Though I still consider it natural strength for Zoro's body to be able to reach that level. But then something else popped into my head.

He had a mentor who's kicking prowress was renowned. I think we're supposed to assume he trained with him, although I can't remember since it's been a while since I've seen that episode.

In a series you have to pick and choose what makes it onto the screen, and what aspects need more attention than others. Zoro's training gets highlighted because his dream is to become the best swordfighter in the world, a physical task. Since Sanji's dream is to become the best chef in the world it's more important to highlight him being interested in any new animals or cooking methods when they visit new places. It's a creative decision.

Bittorrent downloads random packets of information from other bittorrent users I believe, so it won't start downloading 101 first and finish, then move on to 102. That's why even at 99% done you wouldn't be able to view any of the files just by clicking on them.

It was a joke. You're supposed to think that Naruto was in real danger, but gets done in by a silly little trick that Japanese children actually like to do, originally called kancho. Kakashi's name is just silly hyperbole.

There are 8 stages of Rasengan and Naruto and Jiraiya only know 3. To my knowledge there is only one stage of Chidori.

Barring the previous fights and focusing on the powers themselves, I would say that Rasengan is the outright more "powerful" one. it is based on chakra. If you have more chakra you can make it more powerful.

Whereas Chidori we've not been given the dynamics of it.

Force versus Precision

After looking up both voice actors, I'm comfortable with Zabuza but the animes and games that I've heard Witter-whatever in, I'm a tad skeptical. He's a good voice actor but I've heard him mainly with deep/gruff characters. Naruto never struck me as deep or gruff. But I'm being optimistic.

After looking up both voice actors, I'm comfortable with Zabuza but the animes and games that I've heard Witter-whatever in, I'm a tad skeptical. He's a good voice actor but I've heard him mainly with deep/gruff characters. Naruto never struck me as deep or gruff. But I'm being optimistic.

Kakashi is not a gruff voiced character. His voice is very casual and lazy if anything. Gruff would be an appropriate way to describe probably Morino Ibiki's voice.
