i'd have to say AFI by far, theyre a punk band with actual musicians, they dont just use g,c,d power chords in all of their songs like most of those bands you have up there. theyve totally redefined the punk genre, wait, no, now i wouldnt even consider them in the punk genre anymore, theyre in a league of their own.
each person in the band is incredibly talented at what they do. btw, i dont know why the hell you have simple plan and good charlotte up there, they're just boy bands capitalizing on the recent popularity surge of the whole 'punk rock fad'.

Most of the bands in this poll aren't even punk at all. They're pop or alt rock trying to pass themselves off as punk. I like all of the bands listed but it disgusts me that people don't know the difference between these bands and real punk.

My favorite Punk bands: Blowtorch Betty and Butt Trumpet.

Okay... well....ummm......they are......shut up. Just love the music. I have NO problem with a band like Rancid. Good Charlotte are sell-outs. I dont see SUM-41 as sellouts because they never preached against big record companies. But GC were all anti-sellout but now they play for adoring teeny boppers. I'm just trying to say that punk has lost it's way. Man.....you like ...Green Day more than Dead kennedys and the Damned.....wow....oh well....i can't say i hate Greenday. Of any of those listed, only Rancid is even punk. The rest is just mainstream alternitive rock. I voted other, because in my opinion, there hasn't been a good punk band since the eighties. I'd say the closest thing to a good punk band these days (excluding the greats that are still around like The Damned) are some of the Garage Rock bands like White Stripes and The Hives.

I agree... to an extent.
I think blink-182 qualifies as punk simply because of their earlier work. With their self-titled album and their "new direction" they certainly don't have that punk element anymore, but they were punk, and that's why I think they deserve consideration. And my vote.

A Simple Plan and Good Charlotte could, as PLAS said a while ago in some other thread, merge into A Simple Charlotte or A Good Plan and no one would notice. They aren't anything special and they appeal to more mainstream tastes.
While the latter could be applied to blink-182, the fact that they were, at one point, the embodiment of everything punk still has to stand for something, especially when compared to those other bands.

Dude.
They have Cheshire Cat, Buddha, and Dude Ranch.
That's 3 albums.
Then they shifted into more mainstream with Enema of the State, and now they've matured and done some more mellow stuff with the self-titled disc.

Wow someboy else around here knows Left Over Crack? Damn. Damn skipy Biafra owns all. Punk was a part of the seventies and eighties. People are too complient these days to be punks. It's stupid to think of these bands as punk since punk was a reaction to corporate rock and disco... all of those bands ARE corporate rock and played at dance parties along with YMCA. You can't say that the meaning behind punk has changed... that would be like calling George H. Bush a hippy because the hippy movement has become about bringing on nuclear holocaust in the nineties.

the truth is today people classify punk as plaid and safety pins and wristbands with skulls and spikes on them....its not how you look, its the music....Avril Lavigne wasnt punk cause she wore a plaid tie, and Good Charlotte wasnt punk because one of the dudes had Liberty Spikes....the music changes though. Punk isnt necessarily 3 chords and fast playing, but it isnt Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Blink 182 and AFI. Call that !!!! something else. Dont tell me their in the same category as Dead Kennedys and Black Flag, cause then youre breaking my heart.

Why is Bad Religion even on that list? Other than "Against the Grain" (and I'm iffy on that one), most of the stuff they put out in the 90's was garbage. Their first album, "How Could Hell Get Any Worse", came out in 1981, then they had that funny "Into the Unknown" ep, quickly followed by the "Back to the Known" ep (some great songs on that one), and then followed (in my opinion) their two best albums; 1988's "Suffer" & 1989's "No Control".

That above list seems like a bad college rock radio deejay's "Look at me, I'm a post card punk" list...

Some of the better bands to come out of the 90's were the Devil Dogs, the Black Halos, the New Bomb Turks (the early stuff) & the DropKick Murphys.

I admit to being "out of the loop" these days, but there's not much new & exciting in punk rock these days.

And for the record, punk is all about attitude.

Bands like the Pogues, the Specials, DEVO, Discharge, the Toy Dolls, the Dead Boys, the Cramps, the Damned, Social Distortion.... bands of varying sounds, yet all considered punk by those who know music.

:)

The Evolutionist

Back in MY day, when I first got into punk (early 1980), guys like David Bowie, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, were seen somewhat acceptingly in the punk/new wave circles.

I understand the David Bowie part, especially the way he performed in the early 70's, but I could never get the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers part....

I think a lot of punks were just getting confused with the real deal, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers.

All of Bad Religion's GOOD albums only came out in the 80's (see my first post one page 3)

Green Day never had a good album. Kerplunk is rather weak in my opinion, especially compared to their early singles, most notably "Slappy", which were very good.

Rancid's first album is ok, but I can't help but think of them as a second-ra.... no wait, a third-rate Operation Ivy.

And the Offspring's first album (the nameless one), sounds a LOT like early TSOL, and it was pretty good.

Well, while your absolutely right about punk not being about the image, its also not just about one type of sound. There are many variations of punk and just because not all punk bands today follow the blue print set by Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols and such, doesn't mean they're not punk. I agree about Good Charlotte, Blink 182 etc being sanatised for the mass audience but i dont think AFI fit into that category. Admitedly they've become more mainstream over the years, but their roots very much remain in that of punk, just a different sort of punk, bearing more in common to The Misfits than bands like Black Flag.

Agreed. And a lot of changes occur with individual bands. AFI went from more of a traditional punk band to something more reminiscent of the Misfits. Sum41 is becoming more political and is on its way from being a socially charged pop-punk band to a politically charged punk band, which I think is great because I really like their music. But it pisses me off when little jackasses like Avril Lavigne compare themselves with the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Clash, etc., saying they're so much better than those "old guys." If Avril wants to be the new Sid Vicious so damn much, we should send her some heroin to overdose on.

She's not punk in the slightest. She's as manufactured as Britney Spears and other pop stars. The record industry recognised the growing success of rock/punk music among teens and tailored themselves an act to meet those demands and cash in on the fad. She acts like a punk and dresses in the way she does to create the persona expected of her for her to appeal to the kids.

i don't care about a performer's image or what they say about themselves. what i care about is whether i like their music and whether they are a talented performer.

maybe i was being a little generous with the punk-lite label with avril. some of her songs. i thought, were somewhat introspective and revealing (of her) but others seemed artificial and ready-made.

i guess by "edgy" i mean "real" - like deep emotions & truthful and perceptive statements.

NoFx - mere skatepunk
Green Day - pop punk
Offspring - Punk Revival
Bad Religion - LA Punk (classic band)
Simple Plan - ughh, stay away from punk if they have to
Good Charlotte - only the image & the lyrics, but the music is away out of punk
Blink 182 - just another pop punk, the early blink was better now is really down
Rancid - rarely listen to it but great mixture of punk rock & ska punk
AFI - never listen to it so no comment, just made a research about it and it falls to hardcore punk catagories but why they image looks gothic?

i'll tell my kind of punk

Shelter
Minor Threat
Fugazi
The Clash
Blood For Blood
Vitamin X
Glass Jaw
At The Drive In
Dead Kennedys

Don't know Shelter
Minor Threat kicks all kinds of ass... but I actually consider them to be Emo along with Jawbreaker and Indian Summer
Fugazi is awesome just for the simple fact that they don't allow moshing at their shows... it's so funny
The Clash is THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS!!! We will miss you Joe Strummer... RIP.
Blood for Blood I don't know
Don't know Vitamin X
I don't like Glass Jaw... too wannabe metal head for me
At the Drive In was one of the greatest bands in recent history... too bad they broke up

The Fits were awesome when they first broke on to the scene... Bullet and Static Age are all time classics. They are really sucking these days though. But I hear Danzig might be coming back and that would be too cool for even old school.
Samhein is great.
The Damned are one of the greatest bands on the planet.
Poisen the Well is pretty good.

I don't have a problem with Green Day.

I just think that the "Slappy" single was the last great thing they put out, and they had one song on the album that came out after Dookie that had an exact riff to an old Discharge song.... Protest & Survive maybe?

I never really got the allure of the Sex Pistols. I mean, they don't really sound all that good to me compared to other punk bands that were around at the time. Holliday in the Sun is solid, but not much else is and alot of it sounds the same... they do a great cover of No Fun though. Rancid has nothing on Op Ivy.

I was never a !!!!ing teener bopper, I was a metal head for a while, but at least even then I was listening to bands like AC/DC and Iron Maiden. I have an interview from the bassist (no I don't know his name because I don't !!!!ing give a !!!!) in a book called Declaration of Independents which is a compelation of a skate/boarder/underground magazine. And The Clash brought punk to the masses, my mom knows who The Clash are and my friend's dad has London Calling on vinyl (anyone know what cover they were parodying?). I'll admit I was a poser when I first got into punk, I had God Save the Queen written on my jacket and I thought it mattered. Their lyrics are terrible trying to be Emo but ending up sounding whiny like Dashboard Confesionalls. They have some catchy little jingles, but no !!!!ing substance. I can listen to Train in Vain or Sweet Jane at least twenty times before it starts getting old... I can't even get through a Greenday album, they're obnoxious for all the wrong reasons. I also don't give a !!!! about their lyrics because THEY as people are so !!!!ing bland. Iggy Pop cut his entire chest to ribbons with a peice of glass on stage... that's punk. Sid Vicious stopped playing in the middle of a set, got off stage, and kicked the !!!! out of some kid just cause he felt like it... that's punk. Glen Danzig hardly went a show without punching somebody in the face... that's punk. Throwing mud at a (pathetic) "Woodstock" show is not punk... and what the hell is punk doing at Woodstock? Punk wasn't dead before the 90's. Op Ivy was alive and kicking people's asses in the 80's. The Exploited were doing !!!! in the 80's. Fear was around in the 80's. Henry Rollins and Black Flag were kicking ass in the 80's. Hell... even Adam and the Ants were doing some crazy !!!! in the 80's. Greenday is a !!!! band with a moronic group of idol worshippers for a following.

You should learn your history and buy some non-green day albums before you start debating about Punk. Have you ever heard The Flys? UK Subs? Yeah I didn't think so. YOu know nothing about punk. My dad has seen the Clash, Ramones, Tubes, Lou Reed like 10+ times, Talking Heads, ect. I have heard almost every major punk band ever. I know what I;m talking about. You can live in your world of "we are so cool because we throw mud at Woodstock and now have a happy life and laugh at those !!!!!!! at Gilman Street. But punk is more than prissy suits and selling records to some people. Sid Vicious got punched in the face while performing. Lou Reed injected herion and lived. Iggy vut himself up and freaked out yuppies like crazy. The Ramones played LOUD! BRAIN BUSTINGLY LOUD! Green Day tinks its cool to put mud in thier mouth and throw it at a bunch of braindead, white trash, jocks. yeah thats just great. How DARE you say punk was dead BEFORE the 90s. Black Flag anyone? The animosity and tension in this thread are spreading way too quickly and way too much. Who really gives a !!!! what is punk and what isn't? It's music. You like it or you don't. The punk scene has been destroyed to almost nothing by idiots like Avril Lavigne and her damn following of teenybopper morons who went from Britney Spears to Avril because they thought different was cool (which is why they went out and bought hundred dollar punk uniforms). This is all way too stupid for my taste. Some are punk, some aren't. You call yourself punk, you most likely aren't.

I don't know exactly where I was going with that, but I'm too tired to really give a !!!!. And while I can listen to some old Green Day on occasion, they have nothing, and I mean NOTHING, on the great bands of old. You can't compare Green Day or any of those bands on that list with the Pistols, the Ramones, the Misfits, the Clash, Dead Kennedys, or any of the other greats that filled the scene back when it was real...back when it wasn't just a mass-produced, MTV-supported, commercialized group of crap with very little realness left.

I just wanted to say who my favorite band is. Some people don't call it punk cuz of its heavy/thrash metal influences, some even call it emo. But many still do call it punk. Some say all three!

Me? I don't care what people consider it, I just love them for their music, don't care what label is thrown on them!

But just wanted to say: THRICE! Love all their albums, but The Illusion of Safety is my favorite hands down, and their song To Awake and Avenge the Dead on that album is my favorite song.

But being yourself is what being punk is all about.

Using the words of Jello, it doesn't matter whether you have long hair, it doesn't matter whether you have short hair, it doesn't matter whether you like this band or that band, or this particular style or that particular style, it's what's in your head that really counts.

Being punk is being yourself and gaining and ability to think for yourself. It's all about attitude. The music (whatever the style may be) is merely a reflection of that attitude.

I wish I could believe that, but I have met a lot of punks in my time, and none of them are like that.

It's all about conforming to nonconformity, if you really want to be yourself then why don't you just do that, rather than feeling like you have to be a punk?

my vote went to Green Day. they got be into punk. and unlike Blink 182, Green Day's music has been getting better and better with each album. and they put on one hell of a live show.

That is definatly what it is these days. If you don't have the patches and the hair and the uniform, you're not a true punk. Meanwhile, if you have those things, you can be the biggest !!!! eating moron in the world, but people love you and think you're cool. And the idol worship is out of control.

Why do you give a !!!! in the first place? Punks look down on everything, they're elitist and hypocritical. So !!!! them. You can be a punk and not give a !!!! about the rest of the punks.

You cant. I was simply saying That Green Day Isnt getting the kind of respect that they deserve thats all!!! And people that say that you aint Punk By YOUR SO CALLED STANDARDS. Are Freaking Posers!!! You say Punk Is saying F**K You. OH I BETTER SAY F**K YOU TO EVERYONE SO I CAN BE A PUNK!!! WTF!!! Thats not Punk. Its about being yourself no matter what people think of you. ITS ABOUT YOUR ETHICS, MUSIC, POLITICS. THATS THE ESSENCE OF PUNK ROCK!!!!
If all your going to say F**k You then you better start listening to freaking Death metal or something. Slipknot anyone???

You haven't been listening to punk since you were four. Anyone who calls someone a poser should get the !!!! kicked out of them. Anyone who says something is hardcore should get the !!!! kicked out of them. The essence of punk rock is not the music, it's not the polotics, and it's not the ethics... the essence of punk rock is what Iggy Pop called RAW POWER. It's about untamed, wild energy. It's about kicking the !!!! out of people for the sake of kicking the !!!! out of people. It's about taking all that anger that we get just having to !!!!ing run around for other people for no !!!!ing reason and shoving it down the whole world's !!!!ing throat. That's why magazines like Rolling Stone never really understood it. They didn't get why when they interviewed The Clash, Joe Strummer just said that he hated everybody in the band. They didn't get why the Sex Pistols got on national TV and started swearing. They thought it was about wanting attention, it was just about being !!!!ing ANGRY and real. You know why I don't think Greenday is punk? Becuase they play a show on SNL and cause less comotion than Sinead O'Conner. They stay in line, they are tame, they aren't rock and roll. The punk movement was to it's time what Elvis shaking his hips was to the 50's. It was rock and roll in the true sense of the word, it made some !!!!ing waves. Greenday doesn't do that, niether do any of these other bands.

Only The Ramones truly mattered, but I voted for Green Day

(Well okay, AND the Sex Pistols too)

Okay, NOFX, !!!! you you !!!!ing scumbag
You say I'm starting all this !!!!ing trouble
your a !!!!ing jackass
You don't know what the !!!! your talking about
I haven't called myself a !!!!ing punk once in this whole thread
I'm not saying your not a punk
All I am saying is that you should learn about better music than Green Day. I may not like them. I mean, i have a green day cd. It's not the worst thing ever. I just think they aren't that !!!!ing great. You are a stupid peice of !!!!. You don't know what your talking about and you blame hostility on me. Well !!!! you then! I really don't care what some !!!!face on a message board !!!!ing thinks.

AGAIN PUNK IS NOT DEAD!!! I dont care what you guys say. I knew when i started this thread theres going to those people saying OH THATS NOT PUNK I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT PUNK MORE THAN YOU DO. Dude just shut up. Damn. Have you guys even been to Gilman Street I bet you havent. Most of you guys are probably TO scared going to Punk show these days. Am I right. I can put my signature anyway i like. I LOVE ANNYOING PEOPLE. ISNT THAT ALSO PUNK ROCK!! oh yea one more thing YOU GUYS SUCK!!!

See? This is at least closer to punk. But you might want to learn to spell. No, I haven't been to Gilman Street, but I have been to CBGBs as if it mattered. I have seen the Causualties play live, I don't like them all that much. I'd rather see The Damned any day of the week. If you want some bragging I can give it to you: I was almost suffucated seeing the Fits live in Frisco, I got stabbed by a spike in the stomach seeing a local band called Tree, I got kicked to the ground seeing The Damned, and I've seen the Dropkick Murphys live and anyone who knows what their shows are like (we're talking Boston Irish Pub here) knows the kind of experience that is. But none of that matters becuase setting up some kind of "I'm more punk than you." hiearchy is pointless. If you're looking for a self esteem booster, go somewhere else.
