My God they actually look like the Thundercats but who is the young girl and the guys foe Tygra?????
JackBauer
04-16-2004, 05:03 PM
Brian Van Holt was actually in plenty of movies, but only had small parts in them, like Black Hawk Down, Confidence and The Recruit. I was actually amazed how much he looked like Tygra when I stumbled upon that picture.
Mika Boorem (that's the "young girl" you were talking about, right?) has also been in lots of movies (16, according to IMDB), including Hearts In Atlantis and Blue Crush. I dunno if she's the best for the part, but she's the best I could think of...

Pearlman wouldn't be a bad choice for Mumm-Ra, but Wincott's got the edge on account of his voice. It is too creepy!

Well Mumm-Ra is a weedy, decrepid guy and then when he transforms by the ancient powers of evil, he becomes this big, pretty muscular/bulky guy and a pretty different shaped head too...
So that's why I said Ron Pearlman for Mumm-Ra transformed because I think he has the very look and then you could just get some good voice actor for the normal Mumm-Ra and just dub the voice over Ron...
What about the casting of the Mutants; Slithe, Monkian, Jackalman and Vultureman?
I can't think of anyone really... Unless Bill Nighy for Vultureman... I think he'd make a good Mumm-Ra actually... he has that 'weedy' thing going on...
It's a shame the original voice actor of Snarf passed away otherwise he could have done Snarf, if they were to make a movie...
I can see Jack Black doing Snarf mroe than Owen Wilson but he would be cool too... What about Sean William Scott?
JackBauer
04-18-2004, 10:04 AM
I think Jack Black would actually be a lot better as one of the mutants, cuz I just can't see anything about him that is as innocent and harmless as Snarf. That dude's got a wicked voice! Use it on a wicked character... I don't even know if Wilson would be better. Frankly, I can't think for a good voice for Snarf. I just think Black would be a lot better as one of the mutants.

You wouldn't really be able to get a big name actor unless this movie would be a sure fire big blockbuster or they really wanted to do it but here are my picks...
Lion-O: Paul Walker, Scott Speedman, Hugh Jackman, Orland Bloom, Brendan Fraser, Casper Van Dien
If you want an unknown, Hugh O'Gorman - Burly the Troll from 10th Kingdom...
Tygra: Viggo Mortensen, Hank Azaria, Michael Shanks
Panthro: Ving Rhames, Christopher Judge or the guy who played Wharf from Star Trek: TNG
Cheetara: Charlize Theron or Amadna Tapping if you wanted more of an unknown...
Willey Kat: Jeremy Sumpter
Willey Kit: Dakota Fanning, maybe, she isn't really old/tall enough... Michelle Tratchenberg
Jaga: Patric Stewart, Sean Connery
Mumm-Ra: Tim Curry, Billy Nighy, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman, Hugo Weaving, Ian McDirmond, Tim Roth
Mumma-Ra Transformed: Depends who you get to play Mumm-Ra... Because Mumm-Ra is decrepid but when he transforms he becomes a big, strong guy... but I say Ron Perlman
Slithe: John Leguizamo, Jack Black, Danny DeVito
Jackalman: Mathew Lilard
Monkian: Lee Evans? I dunno
Vultureman: Christopher Lloyd, Bill Nighy
Snarf: CGI and get some good voice actor to do it, maybe Frank Oz

15 years ago, Marc Singer would have been perfect as Lion-O, but now I like that Scott Speedman pick. He really looks like he could pull it off, and he's not opposed to heavy makeup. He was in Underworld.

I really like Tim Curry for Mumm-Ra... His voice is just so like the original voice actor, it's perfect IMO...
Paul Walker, and I know I didn't put him on my list but Scott Speedman would be my two top picks for Lion-O...
Frank Oz could maybe do a good Snarf voice...
Also, John Leguizamo who was Luigi in Super Mario Bros. and the Clown in Spawn could be good for Slithe... Based on Spawn, he could probably do the voice and we know he isn't agains putting on a suit and make-up...

Which do you think would be best a live action movie or a cartoon movie of Thundercats?
I think live action could be good but it could also go horribly wrong so a cartoon one might be safer...
They should definately use the original theme and not get some band to revamp it with lyrics...
JackBauer
04-19-2004, 02:24 PM
No! We already have the old cartoon, the new comics, they could very easily do some new cartoon series! Live-action Thundercats is something we've never seen before. And it does have the potential to be amazing!

gotta find a guy that is big, muscular, and isn't a TOTAL putz when acting. don't have to be shakespearean, just competent.

You may or may not have seen this but Dark Horizons (a movie news site) announced way back in February (26th) of 2003 that a Thundercats movie and He-Man movie are in development...
Here (http://www.darkhorizons.com/news03/news-0203.php)
I just read it myself and dunno if there has been any follow ups about it but I just thought I'd pass that little tid-bit on...
Also, what about the guy from that new Tarzan TV show, Travis Fimmel... I haven't seen it so I dunno about his acting but from the adverts he looks alright for the part of Lion-O... he's young, good physique for the part, not already a big movie star so you could get him on the cheap but it would give it a recognizable young star...

There is a yahoo group that have some Thundercats eps to download. I haven't been on it myself yet, because there is a cap on the bandwith so it's been full up both times I've tried, so I don't know what it's like... But you can find the site here (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TCAVI)
You can download the opening video sequence from here (http://www.chris3.co.uk/Misc.htm). It's near the bottom.
There's several themes including TMNT, Rainbow and Inspector Gadget... and several videos including the opening sequences to Thundercats, Flintstones and Transformers.

This is how it would work:
You'd email me and let me know if you are interested......
I will burn the disc's... you send me the cash, when i get the cash
i will mail you the discs the nextday....
if you wish for overnight or any SPECIAL shipping you must include the money for that with the cash for the set. Otherwise they will go out regular mail...

Yeah I like Tim Curry for Mumm-Ra and Paul Walker for Lion-O. But Ving Rhames definately would have to be Panthro... He's so perfect for that part. I can see Matthew McConaughey as Tygra, especially considering Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara should be older than Lion-O.
For Cheetara, I would say Tea Leoni or Amy Jo Johnson...

I know, it was pretty f**kin bad... But I did say he LOOKED like Mumm-Ra in it. Acting wise, he doesn't have to be like he was in Underworld (though his acting didn't influence how much the movie sucked; it sucked mostly because of the script), but he sure has the skills for it...

If i remember right isnt Tigra the mature one of the group? It makes sense to have someone older. Kilmers a fantastic actor.
Panthro- Ving Rhames
But no way Paul Walker or Scott Speedman should be allowed near this. They are dull, wooden and charisma free.
Underworld got a f **king sequel can you believe that?

I even forgot Speedman was in Underworld... Despite that, I actually think he's an okay actor. He was actually good in this movie called My Life Without Me, or something like that...
I'm not surprised Underworld got a sequel, though. If Charlie's Angels had a sequel, ANYTHING can get a sequel...

Speedman just seems v dull, i think we need a charismatic young actor for a role like this. Possibly an Unknown.
Maybe Matthew McConoughey as Tigra?

05-02-2004, 01:12 PM
Dunno about McConaughey as Tygra. I always thought of Tygra as a sort of cool and collected kind of guy. McConnaughey has yet to play the type. I guess I'm just trying to play it safe.
And about Speedman... Well, that's just a matter of opinion. But since I'm bored right now, I'll try to think of someone we can all agree on... :D

Yeah I like Bill Nighy for Mumm-Ra too but Tim Curry has the voice. Another one would be Tim Roth or Hugo Weaving... Billy Nighy could be Vultureman too but my top pick for him would be Christopher Lloyd.
Lion-O is kinda like Mr. Bean... He's a child in an adults body... So you need someone with height, a good build, someone who can be serious but also be rather child like at the same time and have that child like cockiness and curiousness coming through...
How about Brendan Fraser?
Cos you also need someone with quite a powerful voice so you can get the full effect when it comes to the 'Thunder, Thunder, Thunder, THUNDERCATS!' bit...
Viggo Mortensen would probably be my top pick for Tygra but he'd cost too much.

Billy Nighy has a cool voice too, from what I recall... Tim Roth's a GREAT choice. Good call! But for some reason I can't really see Weaving in the part. I've always thought he'd be a cool Martian Manhunter, though (just think Elrond instead of Smith, hehe).
I agree with what you said about Lion-O, and though I've always seen him as a 20 something, Fraser actually isn't a bad choice, if he didn't over act it. But, like Mortensen, he'd also cost too much.

Nope, i see hes as good an actor as a writer then. It was a v v average movie, all style no substance, too long, no character development and a poor, unchrasimatic male lead. On the plus side, it looked good.
I cant believe it made way more money than Equilibrium which was much much better IMO.

You mean for Lion-O? He was one of my picks back on page 2 or 3...
Lion-O: Paul Walker, Scott Speedman, Hugh Jackman, Orland Bloom, Brendan Fraser... Maybe Casper Van Dien
If you want an unknown, Hugh O'Gorman - Burly the Troll from 10th Kingdom...
Tygra: Viggo Mortensen, Hank Azaria, Michael Shanks
Panthro: Ving Rhames (perfect for the part), Christopher Judge or the guy who played Wharf from Star Trek: TNG
Cheetara: Tea Leoni, Amy Jo Johnson
Willey Kat: Jeremy Sumpter
Willey Kit: Dakota Fanning, Michelle Tratchenberg
Jaga: Sean Connery, Bernard Hill
Claudius: Donald Sutherland, Brian Blessed
Snarf: CGI and get some good voice actor to do it, maybe Frank Oz
Mumm-Ra: Tim Curry, Billy Nighy, Frank Langella, Gary Oldman, Hugo Weaving, Ian McDirmond, Tim Roth
Mumma-Ra Transformed: Depends who you get to play Mumm-Ra really cos Mumm-Ra is a decrepid, kinda hunched over guy who isn't very itimidating... But when he transforms he becomes a bigger, stronger, more intimidating guy... But I'd say Ron Pearlman.
Slithe: John Leguizamo (He was the Clown in Spawn and IMO would make a really good Slithe), Jack Black
Jackalman: Mathew Lilard
Monkian: Michael Jai White, Brendan Fraser
Vultureman: Christopher Lloyd, Bill Nighy
These of course, are picked without thier costs in mind...

Tygra: Val Kilmer or Matthew McConoughey or Owen Wilson.
Panthro: Ving Rhames (perfect for the part) i agree
Cheetara: Amanda Peet
Willey Kat: Jeremy Sumpter
Snarf: CGI and get some good voice actor to do it, Steve Zahn
Mumm-Ra: Ron Pearlman is great idea, why not have him for both IMO.

Yeah I thought about him for both parts of Mumm-Ra and he could probably do it... so If they could get him, it would be cool.
What does everyone think about the costumes?
Like should they be like in the cartoon or should they get like an 'upgrade' and be more like in that picture Phantomex posted or should they be more lion-cloth-ish?
I quite like the sorta 'upgraded' version in that picture...

A Trilogy would kick ass... I see it been like this:
Part 1: Origin story with battle with the Mutants and a big one on one at the end with Lion-O and Mumm-Ra - Lion-O 'destroys' Mumm-Ra. Lion-O gets annointed Lord of the Thundercats afterwards...
Part 2: either the The Dogs of War or The Beserkers...
Part 3: I dunno about this one... I was thinking maybe The Ghost Warrior... Grune is awoken and fights the Thundercats. We learn a little more about their past and who Grune is and why he was banished from Thundera.
But maybe, if Mumm-Ra doesn't come back in part 2 he would come back in this and maybe do the Pumm-Ra thing (but use a better name than Pumm-Ra!)
I'm starting to write a script for a Thundercats movie just for fun but it's not going to well cos I'm busy with other things at the moment...

the Return? You mean the return of Mumm-Ra? If so, Yeah I thought about that for the second but it could work for the third too... Maybe they could work the return of Mumm-Ra and The Beserkers into one movie or something.
And if you mean the return of something else, I don't know what your talking about.
I only just got into comics so I don't have Tcat comics and I think they cancelled the show in England after like 40 episodes, cos I never saw all of it... But I've been going on lots of fan sites and finding stuff out about them...

"the Return" is the comics mini series that preceded the Dogs of War.
The premiss was that after MummRa was defeated LionO entered the Book of Omens to complete his royal training. But MummRa wasn't as defeated as everyone thought. He overthrew the ancient spirits of Evil, became more powerful by enslaving them, cast a spell to keep the book from knowing that it was time to let LionO out. Waited a year quietly raising an army, then he conqured Thundera, killed Bengali and enslaved the rest of the Thundercats and remade Thundera in his image.
Then 5 years later Snarf finally finds the key to the Book of Omens and releases LionO, who thinks that he has only been gone from the real world for about a day.
The rest of the story is him rounding up the rest of the Thundercats, and going against MummRa, who has kept Whilly Kit and Whilly Kat as his personal slaves.
His costume for the series was cool.

cool... Yeah that uniform is pretty cool. I think it would work for a movie too...
But one thing puzzles me... Wasn't Thundera destroyed? So how could Mumm-Ra go there and ensalve the people and so on?
Or is it cos the comics are a slightly different continuity to the cartoon? I heard that a lot of fans don't accept the comics to be canon...

As if this thread has been brought back lol.. Well I would love to see a Thundercats film though it's no longer owned by Marvel anymore so this should really be moved to the DC Movies forum... Here's my fan casting picks;
Lion-O: Matt Damon
Tygra: Val Kilmer, Oded Fehr, Kevin Sorbo
Panthro: Ving Rhames, Michael Clarke Duncan
Cheetara: Jeri Ryan, Radha Mitchell, Claudia Black
Jaga: Christopher Lloyd
Mumm-Ra: Hugo Weaving, Willem Dafoe, Tim Roth, Keifer Sutherland, Ron Pearlman, Tim Curry
Slithe: John Leguizamo
Jackalman: Mathew Lilard
Monkian: Christopher Judge, Brendan Fraser
Vultureman: Christopher Lloyd, Bill Nighy
Director: Guillermo Del Toro, Alex Proyas, Gore Verbinski
Movie One: Origin story. Thunderra is destroyed and they land on Third Earth followed by the Mutants who awaken Mumm-Ra. Fearful of and wanting the power of the Sword of Omens he sets out to take it from Lion-O who must come to terms with aging physically and becoming the Leader of the Thundercats.
Movie Two: Based on 'The Return'. Lion-O enters the Book of Omens to fulfill his royal training but Mumm-Ra has placed a spell on it so time goes much slower on the inside. Lion-O comes out to find that Mumm-Ra has conquered Third Earth and the rest of the Thundercats enslaved. He sets about freeing them and confronting Mumm-Ra.
Movie Three: Mumm-Ra releases Grune the Destroyer from his spiritual prison and gives him the task of destroying Lion-O and bringin him the Sword of Omens. Lion-O finds out that Grune is an old enemy of Jaga which makes it more personal. After defeating Grune Lion-O goes in search of Mumm-Ra to defeat him once and for all.

I could see Big Mike playing Panthro but I think they'd probably want to keep Lion-O as the tallest. It would be pretty hard to find a decent actor taller than Mr. Duncan's 6'5 frame. Ving isn't as tall (at least I don't think he is) so it would be a little easier to find someone taller than him. Personally I'm only concerned about Cheetara. She's got to be HOT, HOT HOT!!!!! Actually Kingsley or Stamp wouldn't be a good choice for Lion-O. One of the reasons people love Lion-O was because he was the leader and yet had the brain of a 10 yr. old. Who better than...
Ashton Kutcher for the voice of Lion-O.

Lion-O - A boy in a man's body, but with the responsibility of saving his entire race. Buff him up, and cast EMILE HIRSCH
Panthro - Already physically imposing, but given 2 months of martial arts training, DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON could convey the genuine goodness, brutal ferocity, and grouchiness of the strongest ThunderCat
Cheetara - Sleek, sexy, compassionate, and fierce. Again, exercise and fight training with a bo-staff, and EVA LONGORIA could shoot her scenes between seasons of Desperate Housewives.
Tygra - Bookish, Intelligent, Shy, yet a stealthy warrior. The control and speed of the bullwhip as his weapons suits him. AARON ECKHART could do it.
Queen Willa - Love interest to Lion-O. She demands respect as queen of the Amazons, and always wants to do the right thing, but the safety of her people comes first above all else. If she doesn't phone it in, get SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR.
Jaga - The toughest of all to cast. Remind him of Alec Guinness in Star Wars, and all of the money Nicholson and Keanu Reeve made off of Batman 89 and the Matrix sequels in ticket percentage and merchandising, and you could get HARRISON FORD to play the kindly father figure who's always about righteousness and guides Lion-O through wearing a heavy crown.
Villain recommendations later...
Just a few things...
Emil Hisch is still way to young to pull off Lion-O.
Eva longoria is a terrible choice and I really find her more annoying than anything. Her AND Terri Hatcher..ugh!
Harrison Ford as Jaga? I honestly cant see it..and not cuz of any pretentious "oh he'd never do it" attitude..it's just bad casting.
But I am looking forward to hearing your villain picks....
Oh and just so you know I'm not all negative...
although I hate SMG I think her as Willa would be good. Or maybe Selma Blair?
The Rock as Panthro could be kinda neat. Alot better than Vin Diesal.
Eckheart as Tygra is a great choice too. He certainly looks the part.

This is a topic that has received numerous threads in the past, but they are all deserved. I wish they would make this movie, I think it would be great.
However, I once heard or read (not really sure anymore), that a movie such as Thundercats would never be made because it would lack the human connection/element that the audience could identify with. Nonetheless, I want this movie made.
Years ago I was bored and casted my version of a Thundertcats movie (just the Thundercats though). My choices are based on wanting a very diverse cast of actors to portray the variety of cats in the Thundercats universe.
They had talked about making a Thundercats movie about two years ago and wanting to make it a trilogy. The second movie could feature Lynx-o, Pumyra and Ben-gali.
Anyway, here's my cast:

Since we're discussing a serious Thundercats adaptation/remake here, I would like to ask you all some questions:
1) Should this be some kind of vague sequel that picks up where the 1980s series left off, or should it start the history over from scratch, chronicling Thundera's destruction, crashing on 3rd Earth, and just showing their adventures in a new manner?
2) Are there characters from the old series that should absolutely not return for the new one?
3) In a variation question 2, should Snarf return?
4) What should be Mumm-Ra's origin?
5) How should we/they improve upon the Mutants of Plundarr [Slythe/Slithe, Monkian, Jackalman, Vultureman]? I think we can all agree here that the Mutants need to be given a more lethal edge to them so that they can pass for serious villains; they were, after all, supposed to be the ancient enemies of the Thundercats, but were often shown to be incompetent goofballs, as was the case with many villains of the time.
6) Should they recycle the child-trapped-in-man's body plot device that befell Lion-O in the first series (and won him the scorn of certain fans on certain web sites) or should he already be an adult at the start of the story?
7) How should the personal histories of the various Thundercats be told?
8) What limits should be set on the Sword of Omens?
9) What plotlines from the old show should be left dead & buried? [I nominate the New Thundera storyline]
Well, that's all for now off the top of my head.

I think it can, actually. If Transformers can be turned into a movie, I don´t see why Thundercats can´t. The basic storyline has potential, if you cut out some of the cheesier elements of the cartoon - you yourself had some interesting ideas on it. Make-up can make the actors look like the actors, and Spider-Man-like FX can translate their cat-like strength, speed and agility. To turn the Thundertank into an actual prop would be an interesting challenge.

Some great suggestions here. I just can't see a live action movie working though. Sure, it's perfectly possible to make them look right, but they are still just a bunch of animals, unlike in He-Man or Transformers. I think the only credible movie could be a completely CGI one.

it kinda depends on who you cast as adult lion-o (to get someone who might look, somewhat a like) though, i might say, Josh Hutcherson, could be intersting (depanding on how young you wanna go)

I think young Lion-O should be at least 5 years younger than Wilykit and Wilykat. It should be clear that he physically eclipses them in the stasis. If the Wilys were around 18-20, then young Lion-O should initially be 13-15, before ageing to around 25.

I honestly don't know why everything needs a "jap" anime influence these days. While I support the idea of Lion-O having pants and a real shirt, I don't support the scrawnier build; 80s Lion-O (left) looks like he could twist the 2007 version into a pretzel with little difficulty.

On the new Thundercats cartoon
http://30gms.com/images/uploads/Liono.jpg
WB animation is remaking the Thundercats as an animated TV series. The animation style is whimsical, Americanized-anime, along the lines of Teen Titans.
The setting is modern-day Earth, in a major city (possibly LA)
The Thundercats are all teenagers. Their leader is Snarf (!) who is now a mystic with a "third" eye. Each of the Thundercats has a weapon with an "Eye of Thunderra" and transformative powers (not just Lion-O)
When they aren't fighting evil, the Thundercats play together as a rock band. That's not a typo, or a joke. They are rockin' cats in their present form.

Thundercats Headed for the Big Screen
Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117966320.html?categoryId=13)
June 6, 2007
Warner Bros. has optioned a Thundercats script by new screenwriter Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a live action feature.
Variety says Warner-based Paula Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Productions, along with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.
Thundercats revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.
Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.
Warner Bros. recently teamed with Joel Silver to produce a live-action He-Man movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comic book Teen Titans.

Great news and not so great . Lets hope WB gets a decent filmmaker to do it and one who doens't camp it up. As for th look of the characters there will have to be some departures from the animated series in order for it to work properly. No blue undies or tank tops have lion-o wear some long trunks and armor light armor that is. The hair will also be a challenge. The face well it has to be prostetics and the skin to.
Hope they get someone in great shape to play them specially panthro and Lion-O and no muscle suits please. Only for mumra maybe.

You guys seem way to optimistic about this film. I loved TC back in the day but doesn't it seem a little odd that, a more contemporary animated show hasn't been done since then? I mean jumping from the original show to a live action movie 2 decades later has me in a state of panic. Lets be honest, as great as it was acccording to our memories and nostalgia, TC was hardly intelligent and somewhat very basic....I have serious dobts and concerns about this and I'd hate to see such a staple point of my childhood go down the crapper.
