View Full Version : Best...SEQUEL ever made so far?

Daggard
04-19-2004, 09:19 PM
Discounting strict trilogies like Matrix, LOTR & Star Wars of course.

We all know that 95% of sequels tend to suck, but over recent years they seem to have improved in quality and even - SHOCK - surpassed the original (as rare as it usually is).

I've included From Russia With Loved because it was the first sequel to a Bond film (and if you don't like it, you can take it up with my lawyer, B. Lowme. :))

So what's the best sequel ever made?

Godfather 2. As good if not better than the first.

Daggard

It was tough, but I went for Khan in the end. The first one suuuuuucked so bad and this came along and brought the adventure, characters and humour back into the mix. Great characters, great story, great performances.

Godfather 2 is one of the only ones on there that i would consider a classic sequel

I don't know, i might consider Rocky II a classic sequel. It was pretty damn good, even though i liked the first one better.

I'm torn between GODFATHER II, T2, X2, and ALIENS. If I judge it on best movie, clearly it's GODFATHER, but judging it on improvement from the first one, GODFATHER's in last place...

And why is DIE HARD III on this list, but DIE HARD II isn't?

If we're discounting trilogies... then Dawn of the Dead can't be on their because it was followed by Day of the Dead. And Godfather 2 can't be on their. And Dead by Dawn can't be on their.

I voted for Rocky only because I've neer seen any godfather film. And I think so far,all the hype I've heard about it since forever,I won't give it a fair chance even if I watched it.

But the Rocky sequel gave you everything you wanted and literally furthered the story without getting redundant.Yes,Apollo and Rocky go at it again for the climax, but it wasn't the same as the first one.

I will have to go with Karate Kid part 2. I loved it how they left off exactly were part 1 ended, the entire flick was pretty much a action filled non-stop emotional roller coaster that had an awesome twist at the end. From dictionary.com:

"se·quel ( P ) Pronunciation Key (skwl)
n.
Something that follows; a continuation.
A literary, dramatic, or cinematic work whose narrative continues that of a preexisting work.
A result or consequence. See Synonyms at effect. "

From Russia With Love does continue the storyline from Dr No, because SPECTRE want 007 dead for killing Dr No.

There are about 3 titles listed that I would consider better than the original. X2, T2, and Drunken Master 2 (US Title: Legend of the Drunken Master). Out of those 3...I enjoy watching T2 the most because it's the most fun. X2 is the best layed out sequel...it's the best movie out of them all. Drunken Master 2 improved the most out of them all. The original Drunken Master was sort of bland and fairly boring...Drunken Master 2 was mind blowing.

So what's the best sequel ever made?

In america, yes, sequel have sux since the damn of time. But when you look elsewhere, it hasn't always been so.

In Japan, 27 great Zatoichi sequels were made. Akira Kurosawa did one heck of a masterpiece when he made a sequel to Yojimbo, and it turned in Sanjuro. The samurai trilogy telling the story of legendary samurai Musashi Miyamoto played by Toshiro Mifune is another great exemple. In Hong kong, there was 50 sequel to the original Won Fei Hung movie. While I haven't seen even ONE of this wong serie, they are well seen by critics.

The one-armed swordsman's trilogy is one hell of a great exemple. The second one is still my favorite shaw brother movie, and it's a sequel, of course. In the 80's, Jackie chan gave us the excellent Police story trilogy, and a sequel to his first drunken master. Stephen Chow's Chinese odyssey part 2 is such a little underrated gem.

In the anime world, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust's pretty great, and Ghost in the shell is a modern beauty.

The muppet movie by Jim Henson are all great.

And then there's the 27 follow up to the original godzilla, and the 10 sequel to the original gamera. There's also the great Daimaijin trilogy. And the once upon a time in China saga, or the mr. vampire 5 movie stories. I could go, of course.

Heck, there's been so many great sequels that it's impossible to chose, imo. Sniff.

But I think i'll go with Dawn of the dead. It still holds a very special place for me as a sequel which truly expended upon it's original source.

Not necessarily.
The Empire Strikes Back was originally meant to be a continuation.

You HAVE to lump Godfather into the "doesn't count" category w/star wars, matrix, lotr, and so on b/c it's part of the original friggin' book!!!! Plus, it has such iconic status that you have to completely throw it out based on good merit. otherwise, movies like EmpireStrikesBack and Godfather 2 and Two Towers would win hands down every time...

Only a nerdy sci-fi fanboy would think "Aliens" is better than "The Godfather part 2".

A bit hard at 10:35pm when the video store would be closed...plus I don't think Foxtel nore any free-to-air channels are airing it either.

Believe me, I want to see it, and the first one. You see, there's this book called "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" and the ones I hadn't seen before that book that I watched becaue of that book and loved. The first Godfather is in it at least, the second one might be. ighly doubtful about the first, though.

although i haven't watched all the films on that list, my favourite is Judgment day.

saying this, i can't honestly say it is the best, just my favourite.

Discounting strict trilogies like Matrix, LOTR & Star Wars of course.
Surely that would include the Godfather trilogy then?

Well I see X2 is winning. What a shocker.

Out of the options presented, I'd say the Wrath of Khan purely because the leap in quality and entertainment value from Star Trek TMP is so huge, whereas all the others had a pretty decent first flicks to start with.

Wrath of Khan, hands down. Followed by T2.
