In many ways (& part of the reason I like him so much) Venom is the anti-Spidey, but what Raimi & Co are doing is taking it WAY to f'in far! IMO.

Why it worked/didn’t work in the past:

JQ: Venom was one of those crazy, over the top ideas of the early 90’s. He was the equivalent of big superhero shoulder pads and guns but in the viscous shape of the symbiote.

What it would need to work today?

JQ: Definitely a product of his time, I think Venom is a bit over played and over done and needs some rethinking. It’s interesting that you bring him up because we just got out of a meeting in which we discussed Venom at length. With Venom being one of the stars of the Spidey movie, we have some interesting ideas for him that may just make people take some notice.

You know what, when I first read this question I thought it was gonna be an easy answer. But once I started thinking abou it, it's not quite as clear cut as I first thought.

Anyway, as much as I hate Scorpom, he is NOT the real Venom. He's Venom v3.0. Where as Topher is playing the real Venom in the movie. So I've gotta say that Topher as Eddie in S-M3 is the bigger disappointment, IMO.

I'm pretty sure those profiles aren't official (made by the fans) luckily, meaning he could still be alive. Also Joe Q recently said in a review that Eddie is in fact still alive, but not doing too well.

I'm no Pro-Topher fan, lets get that clear now. I'll accept what you said about actors having to look the part as well as act the part, but I've notice nowadays that each of these Marvel movie uses more and more "Ultimate Marvel" influence, and Eddie was not big and buff in Ult. SM so I've long since gotten over the fact that he looks nothing like Eddie in the 616 universe. This Eddie could be a breed of 616 Eddie and Ult. Eddie, like how Doc Ock in 2 was based of regular Doc Ock and 616 Doc Ock.

Either way you or I slice it, Topher is Eddie. Again, for the Nth time, I am NOT a Topher fan, but seeing how f***ed up comic Venom is and since Ult. Venom is MIA, I have to look at the positive, however none-exsisntant they are, and potential of the movie Venom.

Bendis said he copied that off the movie. You'll noticed the Hollywood arc came out at the time of SM-2. And Ock was wearing a trenchcoat and had red lights in his tentacle claws, when *gasp* he hadn't had them in his previous two arcs.

Gee where did they got that look from I wonder?? He was also suddenly fond of having chats with the tentacles.

And the hospital scene really reminded me of Ult. Doc Ock. Its not just Spider-Man. I noticed this first with the X-Men movies.

Let's compare:

Movie hospital scene: Ock is unconscious during an operation. The doctors are about to cut off his tentacles, when they come to life and kill all the surgeons.

USM hospital scene: Ock awakens from a long coma, to discover he's been in an accident at Oscorp, and his tentacles are welded to his body. He also learns that the SHIELD doctors deliberately left the arms on him, when they could have removed them, to see what would happen. They also refuse to tell him where he is.
Ock goes crazy with anger and kills one of them. And then forces the others to tell him where he is.

And just to be absolutely clear, there was also a hospital scene in ASM#3, where Ock rips the bars off his hospital room window and escapes. He then takes the medical staff hostage.

Sorry to JackSkellington for turning this into an Ock convo, but I'm just tired of people trying to make excuses for Raimi's unnecessary changes to the characters.

I like the picture, though oversized...why though, does everyone always distort Venom's head??? His eyes look so symmetrical and it appears that his tongue is growing out of his cheek. The eyes are always a pet peeve of mine, they make or break a Venom picture. Otherwise, awsome painting.

I have to agree on Topher. While I wasn't happy at the time with not going with the classic black costume, I can deal with it a bit more having seen the trailer.It was a pretty good trailer, not "the greatest trailer ever" as some claim. At the very least the film looks like A. it will be darker and B. Won't just be about "one girl."

Surprisingly, I liked the trailer. Where as I'm sad not to see a brilliant black costume design, seeing him leap around the screen in his new duds was pretty awesome. And, opposite to the good Doctor, I thought Sandman's part was the best bit about the trailer. That quick clip we got of him in sand form made me drop my jaw. Don't care if I've seen it in the Mummy, I didn't see Spidey fight it in the Mummy. Still not happy about the Brock situation, but I am looking forward to this film a tiny bit more now. :up:

Agreed. ASM 374 was the first comic I picked up. It was the beginning of the huge battle that took place in ASM 375. Every frame of Venom that Bagley drew was pure art. I couldn't get enough. I was overwhelmed when I saw that Bagley was drawing Venom's first series...but hugely pissed when they switched artists He is the best of all time...Venom-wise.

Technically...it wasn't the Venom Symbiote that bonded with Logan. It was a government clone, made from a piece of the Venom Symbiote. lol

& it just bonded with him as it was jumping from host to host. Nothing more than that.

I have a question and it might be a little late. How did Brock and the Symbiote separate again? I've read a mini where the Symbiote left Brock because he had cancer and tried to take over Spidey again.

And supposedly that was the last time the Symbiote could separate from a host and getting back to Brock he couldn't leave him ever again. So how come he managed to sell the Symbiote and the Symbiote itself managed to attach himself to another 2 hosts?

Haha. I think many people have asked that question in the past, myself included. But unfortunatly, the only person who knows that answer to that, is Mark Millar. For some reason he chose to totally ignore Jenkins 'The Hunger' arc & have the Symbiote 'magically' split with Brock...just like that! Good going, Mark! :D:up:

When they made Venom into a vigilante right afterwards, the over-exposure, Marvel never giving him any true continuity.

Venom was at his best as a villain in the Spider-Man books, as all of Spidey's best foes.

Just imagine what Venom could be again if he was taken in by a good writer who actually gave a damn. Some inconsistencies that may never get resolved:

1) The Venom symbiote having another offspring (SSM Vol.2 issue 5 "The Hunger" part 5)

2) The symbiote "evolving" and becoming something new (The Venom Tsunami series)

3) Venom avenging Ann Weying (Venom promised to take everything away from Spider-Man after Ann killed herself, then a few issues later the writers never drove deeper into this newfound hatred. Now, most of the writers don't even remember Venom having an ex-wife)

4) Eddie & the symbiote being permanentely bonded

I don't know if this is old or not but it has been confirmed that there are plans to bring back Ultimate Venom & Carnage. Whether Venom will have any tie-ins with the USM video game and whether or not Carnage will be the 3rd of its kind or related to either of the first two is unknown.
