You know (and this may seem like an odd form of encouragement), but I would highly recommend reading The Shining to prime your pump. After some recent re-reads of that book, it's almost exactly how I'd want Eddie to be written (sans the drinking and familial aspects, naturally)--he is a man barely in control of his anger, who has convinced himself he genuinely wants to do the right thing but gives in to his darker urgings and gradually slips away from sanity and restraint. His humor is funny but almost always full of rage and menace, and his final, cataclysmic bursts of fury and delusion mark him as a man you do not want to cross.

Anyway, just wanted to share that. (Great book, by the way)

That's actually a very good way to look at it, Redwood's Wolf. I've read the Shining before and I love that book, maybe I'll take up your advice. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors, I've got the Shining somewhere in my house. Like I said, I hate writers block. Theres this story i'm working on (expect it to be posted shortly), I had a simple idea in my head and I can cleary see what I want to write down, and it's coming along very nicely. But for the Speed of Darkness, I had the idea, but things just weren't fitting into place and then I got stuck. I'm sure others have had this problem a time or too. I'm not a pro writer or anything, but it's a hobby I enjoy very much. I like when I can write my idea's down and see what I can make of them.

So I was playing my friend's Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects game recently...which is ridiculously repetitive and terribly thought out, but playing as Venom is pretty fun (he uses webbing instead of pseudopodia, which surprised me--and he had the white patches!), and there's this absolutely gorgeous Daily Bugle rooftop arena to fight in, destroy, throw things at each other...I'd recommend a rent for that level alone (although Spider-Man and Iron Man are pretty fun to play as well).

Yeah venoms mad to play with. but his move set is pretty limited.

What I think will happen in Issue# 39 is that, Eddie Brock will try to kill Aunt May. I mean He obviously has problems in His head and He put on the Black Costume because the Symbiote told Him to, although I don't think the Symbiote was actually there. So Brock could have been imagining things.

I saw that on Marvel.com and thought that was a typo, seeing as how the "Venom Virus" arc is being done in Mighty Avengers, but seeing as that's Wolverine, a Secret Avengers member, I'm guessing the "Venom Virus" arc crosses over into New Avengers. That or Wolverine is a symbiote-skrull.

Sensational you mean, and yes, he could. Doesn't seem like Marvel's going to give us the old Venom. Every new and upcoming comic with venom is using the new Venom, and the stories with the old Venom take place in the past. The Venom mini-series could even be Gargan instead of Eddie, or be another past story with Eddie.

I mean Captain America has been around since the 1940's. I'm not a fan of Captain America though. Venom is one of the most popular Villian in the Spidey mythos and if He gets killed off then I'm not going to be happy. Venoms had alot of history in the Spidey Comics. Venom being my favorite Villian, I want Him to stay alive. who can forget one of the greatest lines from Venom? "Honey....I'm home!" Pure greatness from a badass Villian!:up::sym:

To be fair, the only way you could kill off Captain America is if it was the climax of a wide-spread, Marvel universe-involved story like Civil War. They didn't kill him in a fight against Electro guest-starring in a two-parter in Ant-Man.

Venom, on the other hand, is apparently as expendable as one of the Kingpin's bodyguards.

Spider-Man: Birth of Venom
Am I exaggerating if I proclaimed this book as the most important Venom book you'll ever own? This book one-ups the "Spider-Man vs. Venom TPB" because not only does it contain all of the stories that tpb has to offer, but it also contains a hell of a lot more! This book not only has Spidey and Venom's first two bouts, oh no, it also has every comic where Spidey wors the alien costume! This book is the telling of the entire alien costume saga! Granted, some issues weren't reprinted all the way through (only a couple, like Secret Wars and the Fantastic Four issues referenced in this book...those books only had a couple pages reprinted in here), but that's understandable (if they were gonna reprint one of the Secret Wars issues, then they'd have to do em' all!) so no demerits. Seriously, if we got one good thing out of Spider-Man 3, it was Marvel coming out with this TPB to milk that movie's profit! A Venom-fans' must-have!

Spider-Man vs. Venom (1st Printing!)
I had the 2nd printing for a long time now...and now its destroyed beyond reading! All the pages have come apart and the cover is in pieces! Despite the fact that the "Birth of Venom TPB" more than makes this book obsolete, I just had to have it! Especially the 1st printing! The 1st printig is wider and has a kick-ass back cover that the 2nd didn't. Anyway, while "Birth of Venom" retells the entire Alien Costume saga from start to finish, this one just gets straight to what you want to see...the first two Venom arcs! Spidey vs. Venom x2 for the 1st time (The Michelinie/McFarlane stories, which IMO the 1st 2 arcs were the best)! I'd recommend this book only if you actually can't find the "Birth of Venom" book in stores and you happen to find this book at a reasonable price, but I doubt it since this book (1st and 2nd printing) is out-of-print and the "Birth of Venom" book is so easy to find.

Spider-Man: Venom Returns
Another TPB I've had for ages that I had to re-buy due to my 1st one being badly battered (not nearly as much as my 1st "Spider-Man vs. Venom TPB", though). Following up the "Spider-Man vs. venom TPB" comes its sequel. This book recounts the next two Venom arcs (the Michelinie/Larsen arcs) and preludes the appearance of Carnage. Just like the "Spider-Man vs. Venom TPB", this one is out-of-print (I don't think there was ever a 2nd printing), and even worse, while at least the stories in "Spider-Man vs. venom" can also be found in the more superior, easier to find "Birth of Venom TPB", these stories have not (to my knowledge) been reprint in another collection (I could be wrong). I loved the stories here, but the ones in the "Birth of Venom/Spider-Man vs. Venom TPBs" were better.

Venom - Deathtrap: The Vault
I hardly consider this one a TPB since its really just a stand-alone story. Venom and a who's-who of Marvel villains attempt a break-out, only to discover that there's a bomb in their prison that will go off if they don't surrender. The Avengers and Freedom Force arrive to take these villains down. Really, it's more of an Avengers/Freedom Force book than a Venom book. Sure, Venom's the title character and the cover caharcter, but he doesn't really do much. To tell you the truth, you will be disappointed with this book going in expecting to see Venom in action.

Value: 10-15 dollars
I paid: 3-5 dollars (this was the very first item I ever bought on eBay!)

Spider-Man: Carnage

Carnage fans rejoice! And there's plenty of Venom here, too! The 1st ever Carnage acr is reprinted here. this book marks the 1st time Carnage appeared, Spider-Man and Venom teamed-up, and the 1st time we get to see Mark Bagley's take on the symbiotes! This was an item that left a crater in my wallet: When I bidded on this item, I was the highest bidder at $15. Then, my power went out. I was so afraid that the item would be sold to another bidder, and there was no telling when my power would come back on in my neighborhood, I called by best friend and had him put a maximumu bid of $50 on this book! The next day, hours before the bid would end, the power came back on and I discovered I was still the highest bidder...but now the book's price was $43.25! Well, I really did want this book, so I sucked it up, until I saw two other offers for this book: one bid that started at $5 (and ended at a mere $12!) and another "Buy it Now" auction were you could buy the book without bidding for $18! If I had waited, I could have bid/bought this book from them! But I couldn't take the chances. Damn power outage!

Venom: Lethal Protector

I never knew how much I liked this flawed limited series until I got this book and reread the story. Venom's 1st limited series and his 1st outing as a "Lethal Protector" (read: good guy who kills). You know how I feel about good guy Venom, but whatever. I still enjoyed this book, believe it or not, and this was one of the absolute hardest books to find! Venom, Spider-Man, five new symbiotes...Loved this stuff when I was younger. Happy to have this trade paper back (yes, I own the individual issues, too).

Spider-Man: Maximum Carnage

Sadly, this was Carnage's high-point after his phenomenal appearance in ASM ("Carnage TPB"), and I didn't care too much for this one. I actually felt compelled to buy this book, being a Venom/Carnage fan. Its an ok story, about how Carnage returns, assembles a team of superpowered psychos, and goes on a killing spree that forces 20-some super heroes to team together and save a city over the edge of chaos. Really, It could have worked as a 7-8 parter with Spider-Man, venom, and Black Cat vs. Carnage, Doppelganger, and Shriek. Still, Carnage fans MUST have this one.

Venom: Separation Anxiety

The other impossible to find TPB, along with "Lethal Protector". I got this book along with "Lethal Protector". This book contains the five symbiotes; so does "Lethal Protector". It takes place in a secret facility in the middle of nowhere in a desert; like the setting (at one point) in "Lethal Protector". Eddie Brock and the symbiote are separated from each other; just like in "Lethal Protector". The game based on this TPB/limited series name is actually based closer on "Lethal Protector". Seriously, reading "Lethal Protector 5" and "Separation Anxiety 1" back-to-back was weird. It was no coincidence the seller sold these two books togetehr, and I could kill two extremely rare birds with one stone.

It's not that its a bad issue, its just that the end didn't do anything with Eddie! Before this arc, Eddie was just a shell of his former shelf just waiting to die, and by the end of this story, everything's the same! Nothing changed for the better! No hints that Eddie's coming back as Venom, no great sendoff or farewell to Mr. Brock. If you never read this 2-parter, its like you aren't missing anything. The only thing I got out of it was being able to see Aunt Anna again.

Here is an updated version of my character that i've created for a personal project i've been working on for quite some time now, Chaos. I decided to make him black since the symbiote is the progenitor of the Venom symbiote (And I don't like the idea of skittle symbiotes). Carnage is the exception because the symbiote was born on an earth and mutated. And instead of large Spider-Man eyes, I gave him more human eyes (Since Venom is basically in appearance, an evil version of Spider-Man, the same follows to Carnage). So i'll just post it here for the hell of it.

And now we see why this multiple bonding premise isn't as good when you look at it objectively...as available to hosts as the symbiotes are, they should be tethered more towards one rather than just making hosts whenever a new twist is needed on Marvel's part. It's what makes them memorable, like Brock is.

I'm going to love to see how they explain Hybrid having "lost one of his symbiotes" given the amalgram that makes up his very suit.

I never did like Carnage, so Bendis' dislike of him never hit a note with me. As far as I'm concerned, they only went halfway through. Either make Brock the sole symbiote host and kill off the rest or let things like the "Venom Virus" and Hybrid continue to occur.

About the only modern symbiote I can feel for is Toxin. He was written like what an interesting Hybrid could have been like.

I think Carnage is awesome, IMO. Obviously, Venom and Carnage are the two main symbiote villains and should only have been. I wasn't too fond of the sudden appearances of a whole bunch of symbiote characters, however, I liked Toxin in what little of him we got.

I don't mind the other symbiotes. What I did mind was the fact that they were so throwaway. If you're going to make someone a symbiote, make them memorable. Like a She-Venom or a full hero or even a sane, calm person. Something that's not generic or a blatant attempt to rip off of previous elements. Lately, that's a rarity.

Maultiple bonding shouldn't happen. I can see The first couple of Symbiotes including Scream, Hybrid, etc. But alot can get sickening. The current new Symbiotes aren't close to being as popular as Venom because Venom is the greatest Symbiote ever.

Im not a Carnage fan ,though I can feel where you're coming from.Bendis has a habit of feeding Spider-Man villains to B level characters that he likes.

Carnage was fun to read, but after a while it seemed like his next appearance had to be much more heinous than the last one, and it stopped being fun to read.

I also dislike how symbiotes are apparently a race pre-disposed to just being evil, despite that the original black costume was not so in any way. It was just a little clingy, and Peter got freaked out (it saved his life, remember, after he tried to destroy it with the bell tower). Now if anyone comes into contact with alien ooze, it's just a matter of tme before they're so evil the Devil wouldn't play cards with 'em. Even Toxin seemed to be going this route in his first debut (I haven't kept up on the character, so I can't say anythng about his present condition).

Pause.

After careful consideration, Sens 39 might actually be a good thing. Yes, I realize I was foaming at the mouth with rage the other day, but think about it--this story is the "Last Temptation of Eddie Brock." Eddie Brock goes through a complete acceptance of what he's done, a struggle with his morality that he eventually wins--only to make the bitter discovery that he's alive. The last panel, he's giving himself over fully, irretrievably, to his darker nature. Sure, I had some high hopes for this series, and I still say it was rather a let down, but look at it tis way--Sacasa has officially buried the self-doubting, "gee, I don't know" ethical twit that Marvel started to give us way back when he auctioned off his darker half. Sure, he's bed-ridden, gaunt, low on his luck--but he's got his determination back, his grim ferocity. You might say, in fact, that Eddie is now fully ready to pick up his villanous life, despite his lack of symbiote. Marvel is clearly going to go somewhere with him, if that "interesting discussion over dinner" is any indication. Now, if they don't drop the ball (which they likely will), I think it's safe to say:
Venom is back.

Sure, he's bed-ridden, gaunt, low on his luck--but he's got his determination back, his grim ferocity. You might say, in fact, that Eddie is now fully ready to pick up his villanous life, despite his lack of symbiote. Marvel is clearly going to go somewhere with him, if that "interesting discussion over dinner" is any indication. Now, if they don't drop the ball (which they likely will), I think it's safe to say:
Venom is back.
Well said, I actually felt like this was one of those "5 stages of acceptance" type of things in the end. There's more anger burning, and the fact that he wasn't killed off, but instead, had his mind cleared and opened may lead to bigger and better things in the future. I look forward to the future. :)

ok I clearly misunderstood that second part of "last temptation", I thought that the "now we know who's in charge" from Eddie meant that in the end HE was in charge and not his homicidal impulses (I thought were represented by the virtual symbiote he was seeing), but maybe someone could explain to me the "other side of the coin" because with what I understood with the conculsion of this story, I honestly couldn't see Brock come back as Venom (although that issue made that it's something that's going to happen no matter what now)

Though it was too quick, I interpreted that as Eddie's turn. After all, he tried to "cut Venom out" and end his own life, and neither one of those things worked. He's a man trapped in his own terrible situation, so he might as well get his bad on.

I think the "now we know who's in charge" was a sort of "stop bothering me, I'll do it myself now." But hey--I could be horribly, horribly wrong. (Next Venom story: Eddie debates heavily over whether or not to help a young child across the street. Said child gets hit by a bus, and Eddie morosely contemplates his own failure for 15 pages while listening to Evanescence.)

Well it seems in the end that I wasn't the only one thinking that. Because I clearly thought as this arc as a fight of Brock against his dark self (represented by Venom), clearly in the first part and the beginning of the second, he's clearly controled by it ("this isn't partnership, this is dictatorship"), but the last bit of what Brock once was before giving to the madness fought for the control, and eventualy won. Once again, that end for me REALLY REALLY built a great ending for Brock. He might have a lot of poorly written stories, but at least he would have ended his life with his sanity, with his conscience at rest ("forgive me"). Oh well, it's only my opinion. I just hope they would be able to do something good with him in the future
