I'm going to say this, and I'm not being ugly when I say it, but I feel it needs saying.

My prior statement about how asking people why they like the symbiotes is like asking Ock fans why they like Ock, was purely rhetorical. I'm well aware of why you guys like him, and am willing to give you the freedom to do what you want and like who you want. This is why I never burst into Ock-themed threads asking "Why are you guys totally obssessed with a dumpy nuclear-physicist who has a Mommy complex, overcompensates times FOUR - [clears throat] and likes to eat?" I already know why, and I give you people the benefit of the doubt.

I have noticed before how devotees of particular characters get very "my favorite character is BETTER than yours," in these forums. And, a little tendency to put others down about their preferences is seen as well.

People who enjoy reading about the symbiotes are not obssessed with "big snarly beasts and dinosaurs." Thanks for that little stereotype. We're not all six years old. People who like the symbiotes are for the most part people with deep science-fiction backrounds and they are *really into horror*. [Except for those who only know about them from the cartoon, yet love them - those people are a different breed and I admit I know nothing of what makes them tick.] If you're not into horror, the symbiotes are most likely not for you and you'll never "get" it/them.

How about a little tolerance here? Are symbiote-fans over in the Ock threads poking fun at you guys and insulting Octavius? No we arn't. Why can't everyone just be nice? That's a really UNsymbiotic thing to say, but I feel we're all Spider-people when you get right down to it. Different strokes for different folks within the Spiderverse.

I don't know much about Venom, I came over here to ask what the attraction was all about. I just wanted an answer to the question that didn't involve "because he's just cool".

It all started with a simple mistake. While participating in the first Secret Wars, Spider-Man really trashed his costume. He came across two other heroes who earlier had similar problems and told him there was a wondrous machine capable of making any article of clothing you can think of. Unfortunately for poor Spidey, they neglected to tell him where to find it. Spider-Man did find a device that he thought looked like "it wants to make a costume". It produced a small, black ball that initially set off his spider-sense as he picked it up. The ball oozed over the confused hero and became a black costume. Spider-Man wore the costume for a few months, enjoying the fact that it produced its own webbing and could change to mimic his civilian clothes.
This all came to an end when Spider-Man discovered his nifty new threads were actually an alien symbiote trying to bond to him permanently. Mr. Fantastic separated the two with his "sonic blaster" and captured the symbiote for study. It should be noted that during the period that Spider-Man wore the alien costume, there was evidence that the symbiote somehow fed on his adrenaline. The costume escaped and rejoined Spider-Man briefly, but the hero tried to kill the symbiote using the noise from a church's bell tower. The plan worked too well, and the symbiote saved Spidey's life before hiding itself in the church.

It stands to reason that when his biggest score--a man confessing to be the then-active Sin-Eater--was exposed as a fraud when the real Sin-Eater was captured by Spider-Man, Brock went a little over the edge. The paper fired him, his father disowned him, and his marriage ended. Brock's mind locked onto Spider-Man as the source of all his woes and thus began Brock's burning hatred of the Wall-Crawler. But life continued to deal harshly with Brock, and soon he decided to commit suicide. Stopping by a church to pray before he did the fateful deed, Brock's intense hatred of Spider-Man was noticed by the symbiote who had been hidden there since its last confrontation with Spider-Man. The two bonded and became Venom.

I think that was the most well-wrtten summary of the Venom origin I've ever read. Even as a Venom fan I saw some things in there I didn't know, and I understand the character a little better now.

Really? Cool, I'd buy it if I didn't hate the art so bad. The bits and pieces I knew were found by collecting old ASM comics from his actual origin. The only obsticle is the way ASM 300 is so elusive.

Parents got it for me last X-mas. But like Symbiotica said, it can also be found in the Todd Macfarlane: Visinoaries TPB for alot cheeper.

I actually didn't know you could find any for that little. I think the most I've ever paid for a comic is $40.00, though. It's all worth it in the end though because I bought some really rare comics in near-mint condition for less than $10.00 and upon looking it up on the net they're actually worth quite a bit. I'll eventually get my hands on a compy of ASM 300, just because I'm that into my collection, but in the meantime I'll look for this Visionaries TPB.

I this in the mail today & couldn't wait to read it. I wasn't dissapointed. Another excellent issue. Awesome artwork once again, although the human models tend to be abit off in places, but who cares, to busy looking at the symbiotes!
Some really good dialogue again between the charactors, especially Venom & Carnage.
This is shaping up to be my favorite mini of the year. Good stuff :up:

Venom goes and slices up a tire on a car. Spidey comes along with groceries.

Then Bucky, CAptain America's sidekick, comes along.

Seen one where Sue Richards is marrying someone, one where loadsa Marvel charactors are watchin Britney Spears (I think, from what I remember) in a cinema & it collapses because theres to many of them in there. LOL, that one was good.

VENOM FAN-FIC. New link I just found... I think I've posted Dyce's "Psycho-Analysing My Symbiote" before. Well, here's an archive with both that story and a Dyce V poem. There's also a V-sym story and a V story by other authors. Dyce rocks, and the others are fairly good (although I have the usual quibbles with interp of sym behavior- we all seem to have different takes on them).
It's quite good, overall, the fictives are in decent charactorization or better.
And there's humor here- sick, black, not-well-adjusted humor- very appropriate to Venom!

Bah, didn't miss much to be honest with you. Personally I'm glad the damn series is over. Started out ok but went down hill during thw Wolverine arc.

Anyway, brief Venom #18 recap...

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Fantastic 4 leg it & trap Venom (real one) in the Baxtor Building using Sues invisible forcefiled.
Reed & Jonny fly off leaving Thing, Sud & Spider-man on top of the roof looking down in Venom.
Spidey wants to get in the building & save Venom (as you do!) because there going to destroy him. So he picks Thing up & tosses him off the side of the building, Sue goes after him to save him, leaving Spidey able to get inside the building.
When he gets inside, Venom smacks him one.
Meanwhile at 'Fantastic Four Storage Facility 12' fake Venom is released by the suit (who is Bob in disgiese), heads off towards the Baxtor Building to face Venom.
The real 'suit' is in the Baxtor building with the real Venom & is about to vaporise him (& spidey in the process)! Until that is Sue comes back & contains the 'suit' in another of her forcefields, so the blast juts goes off inside there & no damage done.
Then fake Venom turns up where it seems to seperate from its host & combine with the original symbiote & Eddie (turning him into the size of a small jet plain by the looks of things to!!!)
Venom then leaves the Baxtor building laughing his ass off, swinging through the night leaving Thing, Sue & Spider-man with a rather blank look on there faces.

Yep, the ending to this series did indeed suck big time. Why it was delayed for so long god only knows, because it sure as hell wasn't to make sure they wrapped everything up!

In one panel, his head alone is about the size of a car! So yeah, I'm guessing he must be about the size of a bus now! Totally stupid. I'm goning to try & forget this series ever happened. :(

I think its just Marvel couldn't think of anything else to do with the poor guy so they though "I know, lets kill off the real Venom & give everyone a brand new fake Venom to play with! That'll liven things up abit!"

Separation Anxiety starts out as Eddie Brock is being escorted to a experimental facility. He's obviously separated from his symbiote because he could easily break out of his bonds but, he is guarded by hundreds of armored guards that have huge weapons facing his prison ship at this very moment. He's escorted inside all the while, wondering where his other is. Meanwhile, we now look at a containment tank holding the venom symbiote. They obviously miss each other. As scientists are studying it, the symbiote forms one of its tendrils into Eddie's face. Because the scientists don't seem to want to let it go, the symbiote starts to search for a way to escape. Back to Eddie being now inside his own holding tank, Eddie is frustrated for very good reason and struggles, struggles, then breaks free of his bonds. He starts to punch at the glass imprisoning him, after a few blows it starts to crack. The guards are going haywire! Then all of a sudden five guards come running in only to transform into five symbiotes. That's right, the one's made by the venom symbiote in Venom:Lethal Protector. I'll classify them as colors, there's the brown one, green one, grey one, purple one, and the yellow-red one. Those symbiotes start to wreak havok on all the guards in the room. One scientist happens to escape their wrath. Eddie starts to pound again on the glass to try to stop the symbiotes and when he does, he is covered in a mass of symbiote tenticles, and captured. They capture Eddie and that scientist, Mr. Ellis. They take them away.


Issue two starts with the venom symbiote, getting very frustrated with its imprisonment. It tries to find a way to escape. It searches the glass until, yes, it finds a little crack near the bottom. It smiles maniacally! Elsewhere, the symbiotes let their reason for the capture of Eddie Brock known. They are having trouble controlling their symbiotes and they need his help to control them! The yellow-red symbiote re-tells their story of their creation by the Life Foundation (see Lethal Protector overview) and Eddie relates to their problem but then makes a mad dash away! I can understand his inability to help these others! The brown one corners Ed and forms a tendril into a knife, he says "I've found the only way to deal with people like you is to kill you all!!!!!" The other symbiotes rush to stop him. Back at the facility more guards come to the facility and start to carry the wounded, one of the wounded get's into one of the helicopters. The medical staff are trying to save the patient and he's trying to tell them something, "Listen to me......IT'S HERE!!!!" Just then the symbiote stands up from the patients body and escapes from the helicopter. Back at the warehouse where Ed is being held captive, the symbiotes finally control Carl, the brown one and he get's control over his symbiote. The seeming leader, the yellow-red symbiote, says "get him away from me, put him with the other one!" This was brought on by Ed mocking their futile attempts to control their symbiotes. Eddie is thrown into their prison with this so called other one. Eddie states in his thoughts that if this is another symbiote, he has to kill it, his attempt is halted when he finds out that the "other one" is Ellis the reporter. Back outside, the symbiotes are discussing what they're to do about Brock. They're frustrated at how to control their symbiotes and not wanting to be part of the Life Foundation anymore. The yellow-red lady goes and get's some sleep while the others talk some more. The guards outside the warehouse in a forest are searching for the venom symbiote and trying to shoot to kill it. The symbiote catches a ride on a semi and keeps coming for Eddie.


Number three starts with a scene showing that the venom symbiote won't wait let anything get in its way to Eddie as it beats up a mugging in its path. Then it switches to the purple symbiote alone in a bathroom evaluated herself. Then an unknown knifer is show's his/her hand behind her and stabs her in her side. Her last words are "Brock!" Meanwhile, the brown symbiote, Carl, breaks open the door to the holding place for Brock and Ellis and finds them gone! The scene switches to Brock and Ellis running away, Ellis, not in as good a shape as brock stops and meets up with four buffed street theives. They pull out a gun and then Brock grabs the mans arm and squeezes so hard that the man drops his gun. He throws the man down and starts to take on the other three guys by himself. He's kicking butt, but then one guy shoots Brock in the arm with his gun, then points it at Brock's head and is about to kill him when Ellis throws a trash can at his head. Eddie thanks the reporter and they continue to flee. Back at the warehouse the symbiotes find the purple one dead and they automatically blame Brock. Elsewhere the venom symbiote takes a ride with the armored guards out of the city. Brock and Ellis break into another warehouse in another part of the city and behind them the symbiotes follow the path of their destruction to them. They still mean to capture Ed, but the brown symbiote wants very badly to kill him. He's losing control of his symbiote fast! They eventually find the warehouse and the brown one takes it upon himself to find Eddie. He's breaking open crates and searching when that same unknown knifer tries to kill the brown one. A knife isn't supposed to harm symbiotes but this one cuts through the browns tendrils and again he thinks that Brock is killing him. As he screams "NO" Brock looks and sees the knife in Carls back and Carl falls down onto Eddie. He takes a closer look at the knife and while reaching for it the other symbiotes show up and they see Eddie touching the knife in Carls back and they then think that getting Brock's help isn't worth it and decide that he doesn't deserve to live!


Issue four plunges into action with the yellow-red symbiote leaping to pounce on Brock. They stuggle and finally the yellow-red symbiote ends it, she strangles him until his vision starts to blurr. Then the green symbiote pushes her out of the way and tries to get her not to sink to his "level". Then Brock pleads that he didn't kill the two dead symbiotes, then the green one kicks Brock across the room. Meanwhile, Ellis is fleeing and all of a sudden finds himself faced with the ships of the armored guards pursuing Brock and the venom symbiote. He tells them where the warehouse is and the venom symbiote melts off the bottom of one of the ships and goes in search of Brock. Then back in the warehouse, the yellow-red, Donna symbiote, and green and the blue symbiote have Brock tied to two poles and captured. The green one let's his face show to Brock and describes that he and the others don't want to kill Brock at all, they just want to know how to communicate to their others and understand them. All the while, Donna is eyeing the knife laying on the ground that was used by someone to kill the brown and purple symbiotes. Then Donna decides to take the knife while the building is being surrounded by the armored guards. She picks up the knife and kills the blue symbiote because she listened to her symbiote and wants to kill all the other symbiotes. She faces the green one and he tries to talk her out of killing them all but his attempts prove fatal. Donna then is about to try to kill Brock when the venom symbiote bursts through the ceiling and joins with Brock to make Venom once again! Now with his other, Brock knocks away the knife and punches Donna into a crate and knocks her unconscious. Then, upon seeing the guards approaching him through the door he flees. After the federal armored guards mop up all the dead they find that all the human hosts except Donna are dead, they've rounded up all the symbiotes and taken them into custody. Brock then re-evaluates his life with his symbiote which presents big questions for the future.

I'm sure there will be other stories with Brock as Venom, just not in continuity. I highly doubt this new guy will be around for a long time. Don't you think though, that maybe the Venom character became a little stagnent over the years? That he was overly populated in the titles? Do you not think he needed a little rejuvinating?

I totally agree. Venom was over used by Marvel & he did get overexpossed & inevitably, people turned away. Alot of things that people have said about Venom I agree with, I just don't like the way they went about it.
Venom was in need of an over haul yes, i admit that, but not by killing off what makes Venom Venom. Eddie Brock. Marvel will realise they dropped the ball on this hopefully, & being as this is comic world after all. Knowone stays dead forever. ;)

Fair enough, I may decide I hate what they are doing with Venom and become an rabid supporter of getting Eddie back with the symbiote. I don't know until i see more then 3 pages of this new Venom.

Too be honest, I think Eddie will be cryogenically frozen, then eventually be awakened and reunited with the symbiote. Then he will never have been dead and the old venom will be back, hopefully with a motive that will get him back to where he was and possibly further.

Yeah, the arcs not finished yet, but I'm holding out much hope for Eddie/Venom at the end of it. I think thats the last we've seen of Doc Ock though. Hopefully anyway, he looked aweful in MK:SM!!! lol
