I love that picture too. It was based on old biblical artwork of Satan(or some otherworldly demon) devouring a helpless human soul. Seeing Venom being compared to the devil or a demon is really perfect and it fits his character so well. :sym:

I wanted to ask all my fellow Venom fans about Venom's tongue. As much as I love the character I have never liked how most of the artists always draw this exaggerated tongue. It seems that every picture has that. One thing I'm glad Raimi didn't do was give Venom that look for Spidey 3.

The tongue is Venom's signature and Mark Bagley did it the best. I'm an old school Venom fan from the 90's and really miss his work from AMS 374/375 as well as the first Venom mini-series. I've seen some really horrible, awful interpretations of Venom since then.
I was extremely disappointed with Venom in Spiderman 3. Piss-poor effort on Rami's part. Venom should've been bigger, scarier, and more intimidating. He was a pussy in Spiderman 3.
I did catch the Anit-Venom storyline and I was interested, and I did like most of Romita's work. I still can't cope with the fact that Venom is not Eddie Brock. I hope his Anit-Venom character does not live too long...he belongs with Venom.
Just my humble opinion.

After reading NWTD and remembering McFarlane's Venom, Venom without the long drooling tongue is the better Venom. McFarlane had Venom's tongue always in Venom's mouth, so it never became a parody.

I didn't like his Venom much when he first came on the scene. But,then with ASM issue 300#(I think that's it),he started drawing Venom with sharp teeth and fangs and Venom looks ALOT more creepy. I just remember those first panels when Venom caught that homeless man living in his sewer. Venom asked if anyone else knew he was down here and the man(who was scared out of his mind)said no. Venom hissed,"Yes,your eyes don't lie."
From that moment on I thought Venom was so weird and freaky that he could esily star in a horror film.
And,I agree Jick09. I just really wanna see a new and demented Eddie Brock as Venom, again.

I'm okay with the tongue, as long as it's a reasonable length. I'd rather him have an inside tongue than a 6-foot one, though.
I've said it before, my biggest pet-peeve of the "popular" Venom, is the oozing green slime, saliva. That and the occasional Hulk-size stature.
I'm more of a fang fan myself, which is why I liked SM3's Venom.

I'm with you there. In some of the art I've seen Venom's arm is bigger than Spidey himself! I know comics are supposed to exaggerate, but sometimes Venom was as big as a planet. I liked his size and look in Spider-man 3,actually. It's just a shame he was completely wasted.

For a lot of people, yes, they just dont like Venom and want the film to flop. Also,Venom isnt a very well known character (to the general public) and people are afraid the studio wont bother hiring an A list writer, director, actor for the movie. They fear the attitude will be "Well, this isnt Spider-Man or Batman we're talking about, so we dont need to get a Sam Raimi or a Chris Nolan to direct it." This makes people fear that Venom will be another Ghost Rider or Catwoman.

I like Venom.
I don't like Topher Grace or a similarly twenty-something playing him in a stand-alone movie that has nothing to do with Spider-Man when he really needed a solid outing in the Spidey franchise. I mean, it's a spin-off of one of the worst comic book movies ever made; you'd practically have to introduce Carnage and an R-rating for it not to fail.

Venom looked great in the Movie. If he wouldn't have had the webbing, he would've looked like he jumped right out of the pages. The only thing I agree with is that he maybe needs a bit more bulk. Otherwise he's fine. There were a couple moments where he looked like Bagley Venom to me.

Hey there Eddie Brock's Club House, it's been a long time.
I like Ultimate Venom. I also like the design of Ultimate Venom. It's a hectic and unruly design which showed how chaotic the 'suit' was. What with the myriads of tendrils forming, to the 'bubbling' and the random teeth. If anything, I got the impression that the 'suit' itself was like an uncontrollable cancer. But that's all my opinion and we'll leave it at that.
Regardless, 616 Venom is my favorite.

Before New Avengers issue 2, I'd agree with you, Carnage's teeth should look like razors stcking from his mouth, not actual fangs, but New Avengers's take on Carnage looked so cool...It may not be that big a stretch when the artist has skills.

Mid-Summer of 2008 saw the beginning of a Venom surplus. Starting with Ultimate Spider-Man's "War of the Symbiotes", followed immediately by August's "Venom: Dark Origin" and Amazing Spider-Man's "New Ways to Die", it seemed like a great time to be a Venom fan.
War of the Symbiotes
The Ultimate Spider-Man title had been without a series story arc sense the well-done "Death of a Goblin" story concluded. Since then, we were treated with single stories and minor arcs like the just-for-fun "Ultimate Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends" arc featuring Iceman and the Ultimate debut of Firestar. When WotS finally happened upon us, I knew to expect a loose adaptation of the Ultimate Spider-Man video game.
Thankfully, the comic's story was a very loose adaptation. Having played the USM game, I didn't want an exact repeat of that story. I wanted new content. The obvious (for those who played the game) referrences where there all right; you had Venom's unanswered return (it was never explained how he survived his electrocution in either the book or the game), his being stalked by the Wild Pack, the Beetle was around, Trask Industries, Venom & Spidey's fight at the museum...all taken from the game's plot. As soon as parttwo, the story deviates into its own rhythm.
Just like any USM arc, I was pleasantly happy with this story. What more could I ask for? Venom had been away from USM for over four years...at some point in the story we'd get a Venom vs. Carnage throwdown, the Beetle had been given a proper introduction, and overall the story was ok.
If I had any gripes, they were few. But nonetheless they were there. I guess the 1st gripe would be Eddie's unexplain inconsistance. The whole drama behind the guy was that he had this parasitic curse ruining his life. He had to drop out of college, he was on the run, and everyone wanted him captured or dead. He wanted to get rid of the symbiote. So when that happens...he goes crazy and wants it back...and blames Peter for the lose of the symbiote. Now, it was suggested to me that Eddie had this addiction to the suit, where while he was joined, he hated what he was, but as soon as he lost it, he couldn't live without it. That sound strikingly similar to Mac Garagn in the 616 universe...still Bendis made no attempt to clarify or even subtly hint that in the book. No matter how many times I reread that portion of the story, it just seems like Eddie's change of heart is random and without warning. That would be the bigger of the two flaws.
The 2nd flaw? Well...for a story called "War of the Symbiotes", featuring Venom AND Carnage...I was hoping to see Venom and Carnage fighting it out big time. Instead, Carnage (as a perfect Gwen lifeform...too perfect, in fact, to be considered a clone) doesn't even appear until the 2nd to last installment, and the fight finally, FINALLY doesn't take place until the veeeery end.
I thought I was going to be put-off by the "Super Venom" at the end of the story, where Venom assimilates with Gwen's symbiote and grows to be the size of a house (the biggest exaggerated Venom yet), and yet, I was actually ok with that. It happened differently in the games, and that's what made it ok...I didn't quite expect THAT. Take note, people...this is the only time a truck-sized Venom sat well with me.
Venom: Dark Origin
This was originally the Venom story of 2008 I was looking forward to the least. Granted, I was hyper-ape s**t excited for this story, but it was still a story I've read, in many different iterations, a thousand times. So many takes and remakes on the same origin, who could Zeb Wells make this one stand ot? How could Angel Medina strike my fancy visually?
Although niether were perfect, they delivered. I actually found myself more excited for the next installment of Dark Origin than I was when collecting WotS and NWtD! Considering those tales are more unique in that they aren't retellings, that's saying something when this arc had a grip on me.
On Wells part, it wasn't enough to retell what had already been establisehd with Eddie Brock's (and eventually Venom's) character...he had to do two things. One, give us some new history to the backstory. Two, elaborate on the established stuff. On the former, we got new stuff add to Eddie's backstory like how he would lie and deceive others for the sake of trying to fool everyone, including himself, that he was a hero and worthy of others praise. I'll actually get back to this as it was a bit of an double-edged sword. On the latter, the stuff we aleady knew? He expanded on...greatly. We know Eddie got fired from the Daily Globe in disgrace, but who did it exactly go down? What led to his career's ruin? And how did this end up ruining the rest of his life? The naysaying Venom haters have always pointed out that Eddie's reasons for hating Spider-Man were never good enough...if Wells didn't give you a truly convincing argument as to why Eddie believes Spider-Man is the bane of his life, then you're a set Venom hater for life, because Wells went above and beyond giving us a great explaination to why Eddie views his flaws as flaws befallen on him by another.
And you never think for a minute "wow...none of this was Brock's fault...he really is the victim..." that is not what Wells does. Even I would be upset if that element was forced on Brock's character in the mainstream universe. Brock has always had the bum rap he created for himself, but you see here how it was a combination of his own mistakes and plain misfortune that did him in. Spider-Man played a medium role in all this...so Brock, who is portrayed as never taking responsiblilty for his own flaws and mistakes from the very 1st issue, can only naturally place his illogical hatred on someone else...Spider-Man was the monkey wrench in his grandfather clock, albiet that clock was poorly builded in the first place.
This is what I'm talkin' about, Wells.
I have so much to talk about in the good department alone, I haven't gotten to the bad yet...I still have to cover the ASM 300 remake, and Medina's art.
Now, Medina...the guy has a knack for Spider-Man...I was always a fan of him...and seeing his Sensational Spider-Man Vol.2 work reminded me of this fact. Best of all, his SSM V2 work was during the "Back in Black" event where we got to see his take on Black Costume Spider-Man! You can't have a Venom origin tale without an abundant amount of black and white costumes! From Venom to B.C. Spidey, it all looked good. And Medina has always had this exaggerated Todd McFarlane-style (he was even a regular artist on Todd's Spawn books), so it was perfect irony that the story that both preludes and retells McFarlanes ASM 300 would be done by Medina (though the exaggerated style is both a blessing and a curse...more on that soon). He knows how to do dark and twisted. This story had its dark and twisted moments, and Angel nailed them.
If there was one issue I looked forward to more than any, it was part 5, the ASM 300 remake. Just as this entire run had subtle changes and extra content added to Eddie's (Venom's) story, so too did Dark origin's attempt at recreating ASM 300. This milestone issue is loved by even the Venom haters...I couldn't WAIT to see Medina and Well's take on this one!
OK...last paragraph of this review has to be the negative, so here we go...As I said, Medina and Wells take on this limited series, their added touch, was not perfect. I always liked the established & accepted notion of Eddie being a good person who would try to do what he thought was right, sometimes not knowing what was right. That was tossed away in favor for Wells take, which was make Eddie an irredeemable prick from the start. Had he kept the original personality in tact, showing how a guy who had a chance lost everything and went crazy, you'd feel for him even more. Wells was content with making a bad guy worse. I still can't forgive the conclusion of partone...if I had to pick only one part of Dark Origin I hated, it would ONLY be that Wells wrote Eddie as a coward, willing to let his future wife be gang-raped in an attempt to save his hide.
When it came to the penultimate issue, part 5, the ASM 300 retelling, it had both its good points, and its bad points, on both writing and art. Writing wise? Venom has always been a villain, especially and most definately during his earliest attempts at Spider-Man (like this issue), who could draw genuine fear and terror out of Spider-Man. Instead, Wells portrays Spidey, not as a heroic yet frighten protagonist, but as a pissed off, full-off himself protagonist. Now, I'm more than ok with making Spidey pissed and angry at Venom for attacking his wif-erhhh, "girl", but the ASM 300 (and all the other "Best of Spider-Man vs. Venom arcs") I remember didn't have Spidey make Venom look like a pussy. I'm not saying Spidey should roll into a fetal position and pray to Mephisto or anything, but having him talk throughout the match as if he could have taken Venom on with one hand was NOT COOL...That's like having Superman fight Darksied with his eyes-closed while reciting haiku...there has to be a struggle. Spidey had Venom on the ropes more than Venom had Spidey. Sure, Venom did web Spidey up to that bell like in 300, which in Dark Origin Spidey broke through way to easily...but after that (hell, before that, too), Wells took a fight I remember as being an uphill victory for Spidey and made it look like it was Spider-Man vs. some throw-away villain. There really was not tension. At least the banter they exchanged as they fought was EXCELLENT!
And was it just me, or did Medina take a little too big a liberty exaggerating Venom in some of the scenes in part 5? Especially whenever Spidey used sound against Venom; seeing the symbiote and Eddie in pain was like a panel version of Picasso art. C'mon, man! You're better than taht! You can do crazy artwork that looks visually appealing.
And yes, Ann, Eddie's (ex) wife is black in this book. That's both a plus and a minus. While there's no excuse for a major Eddie Brock supporting character to be a completely different ethinicity, it speaks volumes that Eddie has da Jungle Fever.
New Ways to Die
Not since "The Last Temptation of Eddie Brock" from Sensational Spider-Man Vol.2 had Venom fans looked forward to "the story that would fix the Venomless Eddie situation (or was it the Eddie-less Venom situation...), and NWtD fixed things...just NOT how we expected, or for some, wanted.
Despite me wanting this arc primarily for the return of Eddie, the possible return of the real Venom, the faux pas Gargan Venom, and this Anti-Venom riggamarow, I wasn't so biased I couldn't hype myself up for the other MAJOR GOODIES...the Thunderbolts, the Spidey/Bullseye fight Dan Slott had praised more than anything realated to this arc, Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin...all these things made me elated.
But seeing how I'm summing up all these "Venom" stories, I'll mostly, if not only, relay the Eddie/Anti-Venom/Venom/Gargan stuff. If anything, as I've already written walls of text on NWtD in its entirety, this will be my synopsis on Anti-Venom.
I went into this arc half-knowing from the get go what others refused to admit...Eddie was going in as Anti-Venom, and coming out of all this still as Anti-Venom. You Venom fanboys just knnnnneeeeeeeeww Brock would regain the Venom symbiote...I knew this wasn't so. If he alreday had a new symbiote that wasn't killing him, and he was using this new antibody-symbiote to kill the original, Gargan bonded symbiote, and if his character was being treated as this "Lethal Protector-esque" defender, why would he want the Venom symbiote back? Why lead Brock into a whole "new" (ie: been there, done that, at least this time it might, kinda, sorta work) direction only to end the story with him going back to...gah...logic...
Well, I also went into NWtD skecptical about Anti-Venom. Seriously...Brock WAS Venom! Now he's a gimmick of Venom...he's ANTI-Venom! An unnecessary counter to a character that doesn't need a villain all to himself. So AV's whole purpose is to kill Venom? That's very limited. Granted, when you have a villain whose who goal is to kill a HERO, that's different. With a name like Anti-Venom, his use looks limited. At least give the guy an all purpose name.
I must admit, I did find Eddie as Anti-Venom quite interesting. I didn't expect that...and having Anti-Venom play a big role in NWtD without stealing the spotlight was great. I definately got a cool high when the original Venom triumphed over the replacement, rendering Gargan helpless and begging for his (symbiote's) life.
So...where is my stand on Brock as Anti-Venom? Well, I'm glad Brock's back in the 616 universe. Like in the Ultimate universe, Brock had been gone for far too long. And he is a Venom, if not the RIGHT one. And he did kick Gargan's ass (yeah, so Gargan returned the favor, but he needed a pathetic Scorpion suit to do so, and Eddie didn't get schooled like Gargan did...and Eddie didn't beg like a b**** at the hands of Gargan like Gargan to Brock did...)...but still...Eddie using his powers to protect the innocent? Hmmm...this all sounds familiar...like we've been down this path before...a path that contributed to Venom's downfall in the late 90s...
Oh well, we'll be seeing AV in less than a week, so I'll just have to wait and see. His next appearance will prove whether or not Marvel has a handle on this character and his future.
Still, we don't need two Venoms, and the original should be the only one...

Actually, I didn't like VENOM: DARK ORIGINS... It seems like Wells read only ASM #300 and

Before starting his interviews with Emil Gregg,Brock was a respected journalist that won a lot of prizes, not just a rookie, and what the hell happened with MJ?!! He Hurt her!!! I know that something had to change in order to give depth to the character, but were these changes useful? What did they give?
It's true, haters have always pointed out that Eddie's reasons for hating Spider-Man were never good enough, but this story makes things worse: it's like Eddie was evil inside, and you can't emphatize with an evil man, there are no motivations to understand, and what does remain? a fool that set himself up for failure...

This would be one of those changes he felt was necessary. I'm not defending Wells here, I agree with you.

Exactly. I still liked DO, but I can't get past how he decided Eddie has to be an ass-failure from the start. Instead of having a guy who was initially good, but was unfortunate enough to do the wrong thing thinking it was the right thing and paying for that, we get a douchbag from the start who got worse.
If Wells wanted Eddie to contrast Harry Osborn (since Harry and Eddie's original back history were so similar), he still could have kept Brock's best traits. I don't mind Brock being portrayed as a jerk (Spider-Man: The Animated Series), but at least not have him be a c*** (no way would original 616 or SM: TAS Eddie offer his girlfriend to be gang-raped to save his own skin).
Wells, I thank you for this good story, but it should have been better.

I've always loved Venom's look when he was first drawn by McFarlene. Hands down,I think that's the best. It's funny because that's the art that looked the most simple and ordinary, and yet it was the creepiest and most scary that Venom's ever looked. I hate these later artists who made Venom look as big as Godzilla with lots of slobber and a 10 foot tongue.
McFarlene really seems to have a great grasp on Venom(being one of his co-creators)and I value his opinion on the character more than anyone else. Like, how he said that when he first drew Venom,he pictured a man being consumed by a monster. And his comment concerning the solo Venom film are right on(he said that Venom needs to stay a villain and be ALOT more scarier than he was in Spidey 3).

Probably one of the many reasons he's so popular and cool.
As well, I agree he must stay a villain and be must be scarier too.

I have to say, Gargan looks infinity better stabilized than normal. Though I wish it were on Spidey, I guess this is a nice reminder of my favourite version of the symbiote.
I'm kind of confused. Is that Secret War posed person MacGargan or Spider-man?

I was expecting a lot more. At least the Spidey and Logan story was great. I'm just worried that since this bit with Brock we wont see him again for a looooooooong time. :( This sucks man, at the end of NWTD I thought it'd be a great new direction for Brock and that they'd be able to make him a sensible good guy, with the way things went I couldn't see him going back to villainy.

Although he's probably been with the symbiote for a while,Gargan is not Venom...at least not for me. Although Brock is Anti-Venom,I still want to see him return with the original symbiote and become the true Venom, once again.
As for SSM,one of the many reasons I love the show is the way they handled Venom. He really kicks Spidey's butt every time they meet and seems like a real threat to him, unlike Spider-man 3's Venom. Maybe it's just me but I don't really see Spidey joke around as much when fighting Venom as he does with other villains on the show. I kinda like that. I means he takes Venom as a very serious threat. And why shouldn't he? Venom knows all Pete's little secrets and can block his Spider sense.

Although Brock is Anti-Venom,I still want to see him return with the original symbiote and become the true Venom, once again. Why? So he can be run down into the ground once more? No thanks, Anti-Venom is probably the best thing they've done to Brock's character in over 15 years.

I'll defend AV by saying that if he works, I'll be less critical of him. It'll never change the way I feel about Eddie not being the real Venom (not Gargan/Venom, not Anti-Venom), but my points with AV would go up if AV ends up being handled better.
Venom 1988
03-01-2009, 05:42 PM
Well,if Eddie can become Venom again who's to say that the writers can't improve upon the character or something new can't be done?
If they are going to improve Venom, they should take a page out of Reign, and focus on the symbiote hating and feeling abandoned by Peter. The one responsibility that Peter just shunned and threw away. And since they would go that route on focusing more on the symbiote rather than the host, they should have Venom swap hosts like he was originally intended to. And I don't mean random super-villain of the week, but rather poor civilians with broken lives that the symbiote could use to fuel its power.
This is why people got so attached to Brock because he was the symbiote's host for so long, a character concept that was originally intended to be different people. So then after awhile, the personalities of Brock and the symbiote began to conflict so much, that the writers didn't know what to do with him. This way, if you focus more on the symbiote than who is underneath, you can get a more variety of stories and concepts.
WolfCypher
03-01-2009, 05:50 PM
That was the route they were going, but they didn't. They kept the symbiote with one person. They went wrong when they made Eddie's personality conflict with the symbiotes. Had the two stayed mutually hateful of Spider-Man instead of having Eddie go off the rails, then there would be no problem.
If just anyone can be Venom, then that takes away from the dynamic of his character. Marvel's pretty much saying any ******* with the symbiote can be this character. If every year we get a new Venom, no one can have any attachment to this character. Look at Menace. Peple didn't accept Menace as the latest in the Goblin family. Same with me and Carolyn Trainer, the She-Doc Ock. Just because she had robotic tentacles, doesn't make her Doc Ock in any way. Venom is a set formula: Eddie Brock and the symbiote. Any other formula; it ain't Venom.
No one likes to see their favorite character replaced unnecessarily. You don't get rid of Otto Octavius for a new Doc Ock just to shake things up. Marvel should have treated Gargan as Venom as a trial to see how people would react. The reaction is the same:
Eddie Brock fans hate Gargan
Venom-haters don't care.
There is a small margin of those who actually like how things turned out. I think this "experiment" has gone on long enough.
Venom 1988
03-01-2009, 05:58 PM
And thats my point, your not trying to get attached to the host, your trying to get attached to the symbiote.
Honestly as a fan of Brock, I'm indifferent to Gargan as Venom. I don't mind and I've been finding him entertaining when he was in Thunderbolts. However, I still want him back as Scorpion.

I can't do that. You may be able to enjoy the alien-half of Venom, but I honestly can't, myself. Venom is a two-in-one villain for me. That's a uniqueness far few villains have. Its not just the costume. Its the costume and the human. You can't have the symbiote without some sort of symbiosis, and you need a host for that, and if I had to choose one host over the other, I'd chose Brock over Gargan.

Why the lack of love for the symbiotes? Venom's in the Dark Avengers, fair enough, but what about Anti-Venom and Carnage? And are you gonna leave Toxin in Marvel Purgatory?
JQ: If it's symbiotes you like, Nerdcore, then the next few months should be right up your alley! Not only will Venom be playing the role of Dark Spider-Man in Dark Avengers, but he'll also be headlining his own "Dark Reign" limited series: The Sinister Spider-Man. Here's a sneak peek at the first cover! And both Anti-Venom and Carnage will be turning up again before the winter months. But Toxin? No immediate plans for that particular symbiote-spawn right this second.

It looks like Venom's bandwidth is exceeded. So I don't think he'll be ambushing anyone, for awhile.

Demogoblin had a picture of a bunch of people dressed up as Spider-Man, MJ, Gwen and I think Black Cat all standing in front of a potted plant. Venom was hiding behind it, watching them. Then the picture was replaced with the photo bucket bandwidth exceeded.
The rest is lost in the sands of time.

Me too. Everytime I think of Venom,it's McFarlene's version that enters my mind. His Venom is by far,the creepiest, evil and most sinister.

Yeah,I'll tell ya. I see some of these drawings with Venom and Spidey together and truth be told,Spidey wouldn't last 5 minutes. Venom is a big as Godzilla and Spidey looks like a toothpick! lol

Speaking of Venom, I got the Medicom Real Action Hero (RAH) Comic Book Venom. Has 2 heads and 2 pairs of hands. The closed mouth head has a McFarlane influence look on it. It's cool as hell! I'll post pics later.
Fun Fact: They usually go for about $200. The box said $189.00. I won it from ebay for $35.30!

I love the Venom hero concept, it was my favourite version of Spider-man, with Parker haveing the suit. Now I may not think Gargan is superior to Parker, but it's a great reminder regardless.
