I'd posted a thread called "when i'm bored..." that featured a couple of my sketches I drew while at work, but since I'm going to post regularly (and because that title sucks) I'm going to start anew. This is what I do while I'm working my mindless desk job. My right hand works a telephone while my left hand doodles pics of various things. Usually I draw Marvel characters, and most of the time it's Spidey (or venom) so here goes. Feel free to post colorings or any other manips you may try.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/MutantCircus/Comic%20Book/venomdoodle3.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/MutantCircus/Comic%20Book/venomdoodle4.jpg

And here's a new (and so far unfinished) pic of Spider-Man himself:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/MutantCircus/Comic%20Book/spideydoodle2.jpg

I plan on finishing the background and possibly coloring it in. Depends on how much I like it when it's finished.

And remember, criticizing is fine, but be kind, I'm a beginner.

How old are you?

Good job with using a vanishing point in the last pic.

Pretty good for a beginner. Just keep practicing, and you improve pretty fast.

And thanks, I'd attempted buildings without a vanishing point, but it never looked right.

thanks. i bought the 18" spidey action figure to help me out on drawing spidey (i hard a hard time thinking of spider-like poses and i usually screw up on the suit's webbing, like in the above pic). so hopefully that'll help me.

I'm still working on the Venom pic, not enough progress to post, but rather than finishing Spidey's swinging picture, I decided to restart it, with a better pose and a better location for the vanishing point. It was a busy day at work, so I hardly got anything done, but here's the new Spidey:

You initially said you do this left handed. You are ambidextrous I take it. That is very cool to be able to do stuff and be creative with both hands. Are these later pics with Venom and Spidey with your left hand also? Anyway nice work.

i'm not sure if i'm going to finish that drawing. while it's clear venom's out for BRAINSSSSSS if you know the character, to non-spidey fans it brings to mind romance novels or something like that. anyway, i tried a new spin on it:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/MutantCircus/Comic%20Book/venomvsspidey3a_t.jpg

btw, it's not even close to finished. that's why venom is only partly colored in, and certain things are still unperfected.

IN case those of you looking at these pics haven't noticed, I've been working on improving Venom. I want to stick with the classic look while still giving it my own spin, much like I did with my version of the Spider-Man outfit. Sort of a halfway cross between Romita Sr. and the movie costume. My Venom is a sort of cross between Bagley and... I'm not sure what else. Anyway, I threw out the rounded jaw I've been using (see pic in previous post) and gave him the much more manacing angular jar. Hope you like.

I'll try to get him slightly more beefed up next time, though.

okay, i think everyone is thinking i'm actually attempting great works of art with these things. let me illustrate the normal process involved when i draw these.

1. i sit at my desk bored and grab my pencil, think of a cool spidey pose and go at it.

2. my phone rings. i drop my pencil, pick up a pen and write down anything i need to write down. if i have time, i add to the picture while on the phone.

3. i fill out paperwork. when finished, i pick up my pencil again and pick up from where i left off.

4. go back to step 2.

this goes on all day, so when i'm drawing i'm never giving it my all. anyway, i decided to do a drawing today with an existing pose and with copies of my favorite representations of spidey as reference, to show everyone what it's like when i actually concentrate on my work. here is the result:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v109/MutantCircus/Comic%20Book/spideydoodle5a_t.jpg

by the way, for anyone wondering, it took me exactly 10 minutes to draw that, while all other pics in this thread were drawn over a period of at least an hour each.

What do you use to start your drawing? Do you start with graphite from the get go?

The only reason I ask is because I tend to use a blue pencil first to rough out the drawing and then go with graphite when I know what I want out of the sketch. Helps to keep the loose quality of the sketch sometimes. Have you done lots of little scribbly drawings of Spider-Man in action poses? They help too.

Egad, I should really get back to drawing something more realistic than these cartoons.

Keep it up. :)

Keep it up. :) actually, yeah. just lead, a peice of paper, and a bunch of spidey pics to stare at so i know what i'm doing. i think i've been doing with my regular lead pencil what you've been doing with your blue one, i add ink later to keep the lines i like, and erase all the pencil lines. and yeah, i sort of cinsider the rest of pics in my thread my "practice" pics of spidey in action.

so this blue pencil method helps? i oughta try it. i've never been to an art store (never took my drawings too seriously) but i may try it if it will add quality. thank you! it's good to hear kind words from my favorite artist on these boards. :)

When I start a drawing, cause I make alot of mistakes or something may look wrong, I use a blue leaded pencil, then go over it with pencil or ink. Maybe that'll give you more room to experiment. :) good stuff.

Awesome. I'll look forward to seeing it.

And to those of you suggested blue pencils, what the heck are they? I was going to buy one, but I couldn't find one anywhere. Do you mean a blue "colored pencil" A.K.A. a crayon incased in wood? I would hope for something I can erase. If you can give me a description I'd appreciate it. :)

I've seen friends draw pictures, where they start out just drawing very very lightly with a light blue colored pencil. then when they know they have the lines exactly how they want them, they go over those lines with a black colored pencil. You can't see the blue under it that way. Also, any unwanted lightl blue lines can either be erased or just colored over later. Not sure if that's how the other posters were talking about, but I know it works well.

Btw, I'm loving this thread. I'm very glad you started posting pictures before you are "picture perfect" or anything. It really lets us see the real progression you are going through, and you are DEFINITELY progressing!

Also, I would like to say that that poster you did for Spider-Man 3 is AWESOME!!! How the hell did you get Venom to look so good?!?! AWESOME job, man!

I look forward to your future pictures :D

Not sure if that's how the other posters were talking about, but I know it works well.

Btw, I'm loving this thread. I'm very glad you started posting pictures before you are "picture perfect" or anything. It really lets us see the real progression you are going through, and you are DEFINITELY progressing!

Also, I would like to say that that poster you did for Spider-Man 3 is AWESOME!!! How the hell did you get Venom to look so good?!?! AWESOME job, man!

I look forward to your future pictures :D Thanks, I'll try that until I find out about those other methods. And I did a LOT with that Venom picture before it got to looking so real. A lot of messing with the lighting and adding blurs in certain paces.

Also, here's a new drawing I made at work. Original pose, no comics for reference:

And here's the rough (and crappy) sketch I drew, simply to clearly show the way I designed my own version of the spidey costume:

I did that as a nod to the crab spider, which was basically a circle with legs. I decided to give the spider a circular shape, while going mostly with the #3 spider, an alteration of the movie's back spider.

Okay, I finally feel I've got Spidey down really well, (mind you, I'll always be improving him, but I've pretty much accomplished the look I'm going for) so I've begun to design another character. For now, I'll just let you know it's a Spider-man villain, and it's not Venom or any of the other villains in this thread. I'll post a pic of a small sneak peek later today, but I have yet to finish designing this character's overall look.

Part of the suspense. I'm considering making a series of pictures, made to look like a page out of a comic book. Just a fight between Spidey and Ock, or something like that. I'll probably try that after I finish getting Ock's look down.

That's my next goal. Making some convincing fight poses for the both of them. Fortunately, I've got a bunch of Spidey vs. Ock comics for inspiration. This is the first pic I've drawn where I was fully satisfied with his design, though. The toughest part is the suit. I'm so used to drawing tight or baggy material on people that stiff material like a suit is made of is very difficult for me to draw. Well, now on to some action pics. I'm sure I'll have at least one within the next couple of days.

LOL. Well, I based him mostly off of Ock's look in the Return of the Sinister Six ASM story arc. I've noticed that in most other comics, though, he lost at least 20 lbs. I'll try and make him look a little more Ock-ish.

I'd love to take an art class, but right now I've got a minimum-wage job and very little free time. I've been teaching myself anatomy by observing my many Spider-Man comic books, and by doing some web research. It's not the best, but it's helping me improve, so it's all good. I really love drawing, and to hear people say I'm improving is a huge encouragement. Thanks. :)

Thanks everyone who wished me a happy birthday. I did indeed have an awesome birthday, and my Mom even gave me my favorite birthday gift in a long time, ASM #300! I was totally blown away. I've been looking for a copy of that thing forever. It must have cost a fortune. Anyway, I'm going to start working on my one-page fight between Spidey and Ock, and I'm also going to start working on a plot for a full fan comic of Spidey. I'm not sure which villains I should use though. I'd like to use more than one, with one villain being minor, but certain villains wouldn't work in the same book (like Lizard and Rhino). So anyway I'm just starting with those, so don't expect to see anything about either one for at least a week. In the meantime I'm just enjoying my weekend. Talk to you all later! :)

MutantCircus
09-13-2004, 12:38 AM
Okay, I had some free time today, and so I started to make that one-page deal I've been talking about. Well, Spidey sort of took over and wrote it himself. So you may be dissapointed that there's no Doc Ock (this time) or any other supervillain. It's just something that flowed well with Peter's character. Right now it's only early pencils, so a lot will change before I ink it, but I thought I'd show you how it's going:

Well, you'll see more, as I've found the comic book style helps make things go faster, as each picture simply tells a part of a story, rather than being a complete representation of the character. Anyway, to all reading this thread, who's your pick for my villain in my full-length independant Spider-Man comic? Your choices are Doc Ock, Lizard, Shocker, or Rhino. Please note that depending on the villain, a second one may appear. It depends on compatability. Lizard would most likely take the story all by himself, while Shocker or Rhino would probably end up sharing the stage with someone else. Dock Ock could go either way. Anyway, I need a villain before I can write the story, and I need the story before I can draw the comic. This is not the movie universe, or the Marvel universe. Call it the Mutant Circus alternate universe if you want, I'm making my own rules here.

And sorry, PO, I'll never, EVER do rocket racer. If you want to see him, watch episode 1 of the MTV Spider-Man show. They call him something different, but he's basically the same character.

Okay, I had a busy day at work, so I'm amazed I have anything to post at all. How ironic that I actually got 3 new villains designed. The anatomy is a bit off on the pictures, of course, because they're just quick sketches drawn without reference, and I was more focusing on costume and basic body type, rather than creating perfect works of art. Anyway, here's the 3 new villains:

and the 9 year old comment was made by many others yet you chose to single and curse me out. Okay, this thread needs a little less arguing, so let me just say I know my art isn't going to make anyone say "Wow!" I mean, I've only been drawing for two months and I've never taken a class in my life. Even my anatomy research has only come from the couple dozen Spider-Man comics I've read. I still don't know what the heck those blue pencils are and I draw on 4x6 pieces of paper, so it makes all errors and irreguarities even bigger than the actual drawings. I'll eventually do some actual anatomy research, find some of those blue pencils, and draw on larger peices of paper so that the lines will all look more smooth and professional, but for now I'm just doing it the way it comes easiest. I use a memo pad because I can fit it in my shirt pocket. I draw with a lead 0.5 mechanical pencil because I happen to own several. And I draw Spider-Man because that's that character that proved to me that comics are not all about punch-by-punch fight scenes, but actual stories. I do this because I love these characters and love to flesh them out the perfect way I'd like to picture them. I can't see myself doing this for a living unless I got a lot better at it in a short amount of time, so I'm not too insulted if someone tells me I draw like a nine-year-old. Heck, those nine-year-olds probably have a lot more practice at it, and probably aren't talking on the phone while they're drawing, either. Anyway, to introduce a more positive atmosphere, I present the other sketch I made at work today, the ultimate symbol of peace and love, the Punisher:

If you "totally understood" it was constructive criticism, then you shouldn't have attacked me like you did.

and the 9 year old comment was made by many others yet you chose to single and curse me out. Ironically "a bit much" also, and in my opinion the comment was not harsh at all, I mean, I had that same comment about my art a few years ago and I agreed with it. Art lessons were a wonder, and although human anatomy is pretty boring compared to drawing Spider-man and whatnot, it has helped me a great deal.

ok ok.... i'll end this with my final thought..... i think i am just jealous, overall.... and i jumped into a conversation that was not mine.... one among two artists.... the jealousy comes in where the fact is, is that i cant draw for ****.... and wish i could.... lol.... my trouble is keeping different parts of the anatomy in proportion..... arms and legs to torso, and all of it in proportion to the head.... my heads either come out too small or too big... lol

Mutant is 20 years old, and it's really no secret that he's not a dazzling artist, or is at the level most of his age group are at. BUt he enjoys it, so what the hell. More power to him, I say. But if other people want to offer him crit, which is never bad, let them. Don't go off on someone because they aren't sucking ass like every other person inthe thread.

And don't don't even start to critize me for telling you WHAT I THINK. I have a gallery in this forum, so theres my 'putting my money where my mouth is', bucko.

[QUOTE=MutantCircus]Okay, this thread needs a little less arguing, so let me just say I know my art isn't going to make anyone say "Wow!" I mean, I've only been drawing for two months and I've never taken a class in my life. Well, slow day at work, so I had time to draw a character with a lot of detail. Here come the Thing!

The Thing is a character who is disporportionate. He's got a huge chest and arms, but the rest of his body is normal-sized.

I only see a red x, but anyway the representations I'm most familiar with show him with the porportions I've drawn. I'm used to picturing the Thing like this, a lot more Hulk-like and with an ape-like body:

http://www.tangmonkey.com/columns/images/ufile_1023700898.jpg

I picture the Thing having huge arms to throw around those gigantic fists of his, and slightly short, stocky legs. I gave my own design of the rock plates, to look like the rock is almost like armor resting in a more mudlike, flexable substance. Anyway, this is my take on the Thing and as I said I drew him how I want him to look.

Anyway, I spent some of my free time today drawing a new Sandman pic. I'm studying Erik Larson's method of drawing faces, because out of all the SM artists I like his style on faces the best. I've been focusing on Bagley's take on bodies from the waist up, but I hate how he gives characters funnels shaped legs and tiny ballerina feet, so I go with McFarlane's style for the lower half. The Sandman pic is based off a panel from The Return of the Sinister Six, but it's not an exact copy. I altered the pose and gave Sandman my own idea of his look.

Yeah, that's one seriously ticked Sandman.

Thanks. I'm trying to catch on to what Bagley does that makes the faces he draws so darn expressive. He draws Peter Parker awesome, I can tell exactly what he's thinking before I even read the thought bubble. Drawing people who wear masks most of the time has deprived me of developing this crucial skill, so I'm working extra hard on that.

Just in case anyone wonders why I haven't updated in ages, there's a new supervisor at my office standing in while my normal supervisor is getting an operation on his throat. This new woman, however, is like a Nazi and won't let people doodle at their desks to pass time. Plus she applies a few other strict rules that she herself breaks regularly. Anyway, I'm not going to be able to draw at work for a couple of weeks, so I'm only drawing in my spare time, something I don't have much of these days. I'm working on designs for Venom and the Green Goblin (trying to find a way to incorperate the comic book mask and the movie's body armor together) but I don't have anything post-worth yet. I'll post as soon as I do actually finish something, though.

And MC, that sucks about the fascist takeover at work. Are you planning on working Ultimate Venom's origin into his design?

I was going to mainly stick with the idea of the alien suit. I want Venom to basically look like a huge muscular guy with the black goo making him a bit larger than normal and a little disporportionate where it will make him look more menacing, but for the most part just look like an ultra-ripped bodybuilder.

As for your suggestion, I was thinking about that, mostly because the armor is so tough to draw with all the excess detail. As for the mask, I'm slightly stuck as to how static I want the mask to look, because looking at the comics I see the Goblin hardly ever changed his expression, his mouth would just be open or closed when he talked. So I'm thinking about high-tech versions like the fold-up mask that will allow a balance between rubber and metal.

Like that mask idea a lot. And also, that is a good reason to change the suit, and the fact that it makes him look like a power ranger, which a lot of fans still hate.

Actually, the legs were the size I was shooting for, it was his body that came out way too big. I shrunk it and it looks a lot better now. This is on a lager sheet of paper than I'm used to, so it's taking me a while to adjust. Here's more progress:

I'll work on his legs. What's under Spidey's chin is actually a little early shading because without it you couldin't really tell you were looking at the bottom of his chin, so I shaded it while it was fresh in my mind. The rest will get shaded before I'm through.

I also heve yet to draw Ock's upper left (his left) tentacle, but it'll probably make it in tomorrow.

Before anyone complains, I don't like how this picture came out, and I can't draw a motorcycle to save my life. All I was trying to do was come up with an updated look for Ghost Rider. So here you have it. This was drawn at work today, too.

Wow, MC, sweet drawings. Geez, what kind of work do you do? I'd like to get paid to sit around all day and draw super-heros. Are they hiring over there? *confiscates "How to Draw Super-Heros" scholastic book from my kids in preparation for new career*

LOL. I have an office job that mostly involves taking calls and filling out paperwork. We're allowed to doodle to pass the time, so I just refer to my drawings as "elaborate doodling." ;)

Nah, it was made for me in a thread a made to request it. I had someone resize it(the threads on the first page of fan-art) but I'm hoping somebody can fix it up without the screwed colors.

I've looked at your thread from the beginning and I must compliment you on your fast improvements. You've got the makings of a good artist. Anatomy needs a bit of work, but I've seen professionals make pretty big mistakes. (There's a panel in the second Goblin story in Ultimate Spider-Man where we see Norman after he transforms. Bagley messed up on his face, one of his cheeks was too far back, and didn't match the other side.) I've been drawing since I could pick up and coordinate a pencil and I still screw up a lot. Keep it up, man. :D

Who, me? I probably will. Some of my artwork will be scanned onto a PC in about a month, so, uh, yeah. :hyper:

Today was one of those days when nothing I drew looked good at all. I drew several pics, including Wolverine and Daredevil, but they looked so awful I dare not post them. Here's the least crappy thing I drew today:

Okay, I had some free time today, and so I started to make that one-page deal I've been talking about. Well, Spidey sort of took over and wrote it himself. So you may be dissapointed that there's no Doc Ock (this time) or any other supervillain. It's just something that flowed well with Peter's character. Right now it's only early pencils, so a lot will change before I ink it, but I thought I'd show you how it's going:

Could you do me a favor? Re-do this one a bit, and put in the voice over for my SM3 script:

"There are days when I wish the fighting would stop. Days when I wish I was just like everyone else. Days when I want to give up. But then I remember that Mary Jane is waiting for me, and I know I can't give up. Because I'm Spider-Man, now, and forever."

I think it would be awesome.
