those cars aren't "technicly" available. the patent/copyright is still active. anyone caught with one, would surely have it confiscated by WB. but, on the bright side, word is, the patent/copyright is soon to expire and a few companies are waiting in the wings when this happens.

most of these "89 kits" aretaken from molds of cars used in the stunt shows. wb still owns the rights to those cars. i know of people who have these. i also know people who have made their own versions. they have no worries. btw, ferrari sued many kit car companies years ago.

The patent for the 1989 Keaton Batmobile expires this November. The COPYRIGHT for the name BATMOBILE will stay in effect forever. What this means to you: You will be able to build a "Batmobile", but you cannot legally call it a "Batmobile". It must be called a "Gotham Cruiser" or some other suitable name. You can let other people call it a Batmobile, but you yourself cannot. Now, WB will still likely attempt to curb those efforts by fans to build replica cars, but they tried the same thing for the Barris car so many years ago.
Alot of people are currently making these cars. In fact, I know a guy who actually has a copy of the molds that are exact replicas of the Keaton car. However, in all practicality, you would not want to build an exact replica. Now hear me out...
The original car was so long, there was no way you could make it driveable. Not reasonably so, anyways. Even if you added all the modern amenities, i.e. side view mirrors, a rear window, headlights that are above the legal limit, etc... If you were to go over any bump or dip in the road you would beach the car or shatter the fiberglass nose piece. Especially since the nose piece sticks out so far from the front wheels. This is no traditional lowrider.
There are a few guys out there right now who are sculpting or building bucks and molds for these cars, in anticipation of the November expiration of the copyright. They are modifying the car so as to make it driveable. You can realistically build this car to be 20' or so and still maintain the image and driveability factor. Of course, it would still ride 2" above the ground, so at least one person I know is adding airbags to their car to raise it up when a bump is approaching. A novel idea.
An average enthusiast could realistically sculpt this body using the Polyurethane / Fiberglass composite sandwich method, which you can read more about from my website. www.thebatcave.8k.com (Click the 1989 Batmobile link) New builders can build very professional car bodies on their first attempt, and the cost is not prohibitive at all. The average cost for fiberglass and all related materials for an average size car is only around $900-$1200. If you totally mess up, you can start over and not be in the hole too much. And the best part is, you never need to make a mold or a buck if you use this method.
There are alot of rumors going around about WB taking people's replica cars, taking people to court, etc. While there is indeed some truth to this, it is not as widespread as believed. I have several contacts who both replicate and sell these cars, and it is rather difficult for WB to do much about it unless they find the molds or the people slip up and call it a Batmobile publicly. Remember, copyrights don't expire. The term "Batmobile" is the intellectual property of WB and DC, so we can never steal it. But as was the case with the mysterious #5 Barris replica, (a fan made car that Barris tried unsuccesfully to buy from the builder when he found out about it. He ended up making the guy a rep for him and authenticated the car as a Barris original) WB will have no sway after November.
Check out my website at www.thebatcave.8k.com and go to the 1989 BATMOBILE page. There is alot of info there, and some pics of fan built projects. As you can imagine for legal reasons, I do not put TOO MUCH information out there for the public. But if you are seriously interested, and you have the cash, I can get you a body if you want it. Hell, I can get you a darn turnkey if you really want! Just let me know. ;)

i was wondering when people would start coming out of the wings... checked out your site, nice. i seem to remember molds for 89 car being stolen several years ago. i may be wrong, and it was actually the 66 car. have you seen pics of the japaneese car? they have nice buildup pics.

You're not just saying that cuz your on it, are you DKR? ;) Thanks for the compliment.
Demon, I know molds were jacked awhile back, but nobody can do anything with them. One guy went so far as to trash his mold instead of risking selling it to some undercover WB lawyer. Things have settled down with this car, and the molds are out there all over the place now. People are building their own molds from the original bodies, or from the Six Flags cars, or from their buddy's cars, or other places. They are not too hard to find anymore. A few years ago, there were only like 3 molds in the US, and NOBODY would pull a body from one. It was impossible to get!
Tell me where I can check out this Japanese car. I might have seen it before, but I would need to look at it.

Looks like somebody has been busy! While it does not look like this will be an accurate replica, I have a feeling alot of the '89's that are made will be highly modified for practicality reasons. I like it. If you guys wanna check out another '89 bat project in the works, go to: http://www.unlimiteddimension.net/projectbat/projectbat.html and click on The Batmobile. The guy is building it for a great cause, and it looks awesome so far!

I am trying to talk this guy into pulling bodies for me once his mold is done. Unlike the method I am using, which is called a Urethane / Fiberglass sandwich method (my method leaves no mold behind, so there is nothing to pull another car from) his will have a mold. He is unsure, since he has alot of other projects inthe works, like a Mach 5 replica and the Turtle Van.
However, if any of your rich forum dwellers out there are interested, there IS someone who will be selling accurate kits for around $12k in November. Just let me know.
The Riddler
08-19-2004, 03:27 PM
12k!?
i can't blow that much money even though i have it.
WayneEnterprise
08-19-2004, 03:30 PM
Lol. Yeah, most people won't. But when you think about it, the kits for the '66 sell for anywhere from $10k to $15k. (although I just found one guy who will sell them for $6,500!) You have to have ALOT of money to try a project like this. That's why you don't see too many Gotham Cruisers prowling about the night.

That project looks really cool, and I like that they're doing it so they can put on shows for a good cause. However, it looks like so far they only have a miniature, "prototype" mold they're making, so that project is probably a while's awat from completion. They also want to do gadgets and a costume, as well as a Nightwing suit and motorcycle, so they're work is definately cut out for them. This little baby sure caught my attention though...
http://www.thebatcave.8k.com/images/mold3.jpg
This thing looks like it's almost finished! All it needs is a good paint job, some authentic looking hub caps and some other stuff, and it looks like they'd have a grade A replica there. That just makes me all giddy inside. :)
I wish I were like Jay Leno who can afford to collect cars. I'd definately want a Batmobile replica in my collection. I can just imagine myself cruising around at night in that thing... It'd feel so cool! Then I'd go to the drive through window at Burger King and freak everyone out. :D
WayneEnterprise
08-20-2004, 03:54 AM
I know where that one came from. The guy took it from an actual mold, and there is alot of controversy over it. Actually, 2 guys have claimed responsibility for that puppy. However, there is still no doubt it was from an "official" source. Awwwwwwww... I am still not allowed to say much about alot of the replicas out there. If I spill the beans, people won't trust me with their secrets anymore. Well, I guess you guys will learn alot more in November!!! :)

This is just a shell but it's pretty cool! I wonder if you could put this on your car. It does not look like the real one and is cheaply made as from what I saw. I think the stunt show i saw Batman vs. catwoman catfight used a real one.

Well, LEGALLY you will be able to own one of these cars in November. However, WB will probably still raise a fuss and threaten people and blow hot air and probably will take down the first couple people who try to sell kits, just to make an example. But hey, Barris made a big fuss when the first fan-built '66 had its debute, and all he could do was issue a cease and desist order to stop showing the car. As long as you are not trying to make money off it, you should be fine. There are several guys waiting in the wings to sell these kits as soon as the patent runs out in November. Oh, and the Magic Mountain cars were all built by Jay Ohrberg (sp?). He got busted awhile back for selling these things to people OTHER than Six Flags... His molds went on a crazy ride and now there are lots of molds in existence. Some copies of Jay's molds, others hand sculpted.

Dang, I have made it a mandate to go to Six Flags this year and see the Batman stunt-show. Last year we were supposed to see it, but the line for Superman: Ride of Steel was so long that we missed it! That really got me ticked off, and ontop if it I really had to pee while we were on the ride so I was a little dissapointed. But the ride was still loads of fun at least, and it was late and getting real dark out, so that made it even more fun. :)
Blah... If I won 10,000 bucks in a contest, I'd probably spend it on getting my own Batmobile, even though that's hardly the most intellegent purchase I could make with the money. :p

Also there's this really cool pizza place I've been to, and the guy is obsessed with Hot-Wheels and cool cars. He's got like a zillion hot-wheels cars on display at the tables and on the walls, and he has no less than 6 cars, including a vintage VW Van and an entire school bus, which have tables in them that you can actually order from. I'm sure he'd kill to get his hands on a Batmobile shell to put on display. He's offering a pizza-for-lifetime reward for anyone who can bring him this one hotwheels car that's a VW Van with Surfboards (which his VW Van is a full-scale replica of), so if he'd go through that much effort for a tiny piece of die-cast, I'd imagine he'd be very interested in getting his own Batmobile. :)

Heh. I saw that one. It's a pretty cool attempt (I think it's a modded Corvette). However having the actual Batmobile replica complete with the sliding windshield entry would be way cooler, I think. :p
I think that the rewar is a large pizza every week for the next 25 years. He calls it pizza for life though because I guess he assumes you won't live longer than 25 years if you eat a large pizza by yourself every week. :D

Great uses for having your own Batmobile replica:
Going through the McDonalds' drive through window;
Parking it in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and letting people ogle it while you shop;
Taking it for a joy ride in the middle of the night;
Picking up your date in it;
Running miscelaniouse errands in style;
Making yourself be "The cool and fun uncle" by taking your nephews for joy rides in it;
Putting on a Batman costume and driving it around on Halloween
Yes, having a Batmobile of your own would certainly offer plenty of perks. :)

Oh, and I can't stand Mark Sheilds' attempt at a replica (he didn't actually do that himself, he bought it from someone else). It looks ugly, and to make matters worse, he is a d1ck about it. He is not a helpful person at all.

1: Get a car you can afford + drive.

Why wouldn't you be able to?....It would be a much easier project than the '89 Bat....may be a bit long, but people drive limos don't they?...Of course it would have to be outfitted with mirrors, windshield wipers, etc...
Building the car is not a problem...I have pretty good connections in the custom car hobby, I just wanted to know if anyone ever built an Animated-inspired Batmobile. If you are worried about whether you could actually drive a Batmobile, I'd be more concrned about the '89 or '95....have you ever seen them in person...they are massive!:)
