View Full Version : Has anybody every thought about becoming a vigilante..seriously?

Has anybody ever had something bad happen to them and thought about becoming some kind of vigilante?
Even if nothing has bad has ever happened to you and you're just disgusted by the crime you see on you local newschannel, have you ever thought to yourself..'if the cops can't do something, maybe i can"?
A lot of shootings go on around where i live and i see the victims faces plastered on the news. Sometimes i think to myself, "maybe this person wasn't a victim."."maybe they deserved to get gun down the way they did".."maybe somebodys out there delivering the kind of justice that the police or judicial system can't deliver".
Have you ever thought about getting back at somebody that wronged you, vigilante style?
If you were to become one, what would you call yourself and why?
And if so, would you deliver your justice 'Charles Bronson' style or 'Batman' style?

Whenever i see a crime or injustice on tv, i get really upset and disgusted.
Honest.
If i would be a vigilante?
No....because i lose control very easily in a situation like that, so, i would make the Punisher look like a choir boy.
But, then again, i´m very controlled when i have to be, so...maybe....
But, life isn´t a comic book or a movie, so....No.

Wow, that's f**king stupid. If a sibling of mine died I wouldn't give a s**t about making up a name, or designing some retarded costume and mobile vehicle.
Anyway, yeah, sometimes I wish I could just become a vigilante; But sadly in the real world that can't happen. At least not the way I would enjoy doing it.

..you are allowed to loose control sometimes Isildurs heir, some people deserve to be scared **** less. I truly belive that not all the killings on the news are gang, drug or robbery related. I believe some of the casualities are from people who have been wronged by this person, whether it being for raping their mom or sister, or whatever. Anyway just my opinion.

If I were to become a vigilante, I would in actuality just be a criminal.
Because I wouldn't just stop criminals, I would stop stupid people.
I remember when the whole sniper thing was happening and everyone was nervous and these two guys thought it would be funny to drive by the movie theatre and yell out like they were shooting people.
It scared a bunch of people and little kids started crying. I wish I could have just pulled out a gun and shot them both. Not to kill just to wound, so they would think twice about being such ****ing idiots again.
I would call myself
The Filter
and my catch phrase would be:
"Cleaning the gene pool, one idiot at a time"

Believe me when i say, if i was a vigilante i would be like Batman.
Not because i would have a car, a superhero´s name or a suit, but because i would scare the living s**t out of criminals.
I do believe that´s the way to go, to scare them so much that they would not ever do that again.

Honestly, I have thought about this. In Pittsburgh, where I live, there has been a resurgence in gang violence and I have a few friends who live in troubled districts. It's a slippery slope, being a vigilante. You're pretty much doing the same thing to criminals that they are doing to their victims. You could be a Batman or a Charles Bronson, but you could also easily become an Alonzo Harris from Training Day.

nah, being a vigilante doesn't work like it does in the movies. But every friend I've ever had in my life we take care of eachother like ride or die type **** and there was a couple times when either one of my female friends almost got raped or their bf's beat them, and I've put the guys in the hospital in pretty bad shape. There was a time when some little piece of **** went after my nieces and nephew to piss me off and I had to take care of him so I knocked out every window in his house and car and went in after him and taught him a lession. I've done a lot of bad **** but it's always been to people who deserved it and people that I had a reason to have a problem with. I don't f**k with other peoples problems, I mind my own business when it comes to that

I've seriously considered vigilantism.
Recently, me and Mom got robbed by someone we know (I'm not saying who it is). He took some of Mom's jewellry and money, and took a few of my XBox games. And he sold that stuff for Oxycontin, a morphine-like drug. So he basically snorted that stuff, and eventually he got busted. He's paying us back our money now, with interest added to it for every delay. But if he tries to escape payment, I'll break his damned legs and take the money myself.

I'm a normal, everyday human being. This is why I am not a "vigilante." If I see a purse-robber or something like that, I will and have beat the guy down in order to stop them. But beyond that it's out of my control. If you truely went Batman or Punisher you'd probably be arrested within a month. Normal humans just don't have what it takes to outsmart heavily-armed humans in larger groups (namely cops, the SWAT team, the FBI, etc.). Now if I somehow achieved superhuman powers (sure, like THAT will ever happen!) I'd use my powers for good, defending victims, but even then I would never kill anyone but someone actively killing other people. So yeah, if anyone's got some radioactive spiders, gamma rays, celestial rays, or the like, show me the spandex.

I don't even have his initials. He did it to a girl when she was like 5 or so. I just found out about 3 months ago. I'm mad. :(
I was gonna try to be like Spider-Man, cause he's my favorite, but that's not gonna happen. I was even planning on becoming a scientist when I was younger to make a super-soldier (First test subject: Me) Spidey. Now I'm planning on a Punisher/Batman hybrid. :unishr: :batman: :unishr: :batman:
EDIT: Turns out, it was all a dream she had when she was young and she thought it was real until she talked about it to her parents recently and found out. Which is good, but that caused a lot of pain. I'm still becoming a vigilante though, because that seriously messed me up so I wanna kill rapists everywhere now.

Every time I see some crap on the news about people being terrorized, it makes me want to do horrible and unspeakable things to those who perpetrate the crimes. Murder, robbery, etc. When I saw those hostages in Russia, and all those children that had been killed, I wanted to immediately re-enlist in the Army just so I could go over there and take some lives. After September 11, I did enlist, and I got to fight crime in my own little way. Sadly, it was unfullfilling and there is more and more to fight against every day when I watch the news. Believe me, it is hard after all that BS training we had to go through, to just sit here on my damn ass doing NOTHING good for humanity. I don't kill, and i would go to extremes. But you always have to be 100% sure they're guilty...
Like, for instance, what if a father of a poor family needs money really badly to pay for his kid or wife's operation. Or if he's blackmailed into crime. What then? Do you do the same thing? That's why I think it's better to be a philanthropist whether or not you're a vigilante. You help the community many different ways that way...

I've definitely thought about wanting to. If I had superpowers, I sure as hell would track down some scum and make examples out of them. I feel very strongly about people who commit sex crimes and abuse people weaker than them. I would violently punish them and terrorize them far worse than what the Batman would do. The Batman isn't cruel. I'd be cruel in order to get the message across. The criminals wouldn't be able to harm others again, because most likely they'd be left crippled and without the anatomy to repeat most crimes (hands and other parts).
As it is, I'm chronically ill and my viciousness has softened a lot from what it was a few years ago. I keep weapons around and would be fully willing to use them to protect my loved ones.

Well, of course I want to become a superhero but unless you have super powers, or are a billionaire, chances are you wouldn't be able to live like that. Like for Spider-Man and Superman, they are stronger and can take more abuse. Batman is rich so he can focus his time and money on being a superhero. Now, if I were a vigilante, I wouldn't kill. I know that sounds boring but I don't want to get on the police's bad side, and the government should handle them, not me. That being said, if someone like the Joker kept on escaping and they didn't give him the death penalty, then I would have to take matters into my own hands. :hulk: :batman:

Yeah, like I said before, Batman or The Punisher would be in prison inside a month. Nobody who wears a costume, stays in one general area or city, and has no superhuman abilities could avoid the cops for too long. They'd eventually set a successful trap and arrest them. Batman's technology doesn't even exist, and you'd have to be downright insane to be anything like the Punisher.

What items in Batman's utility belt do not exist? Grappling hooks? Gas pellets? Bulletproof armor? A kick ass car (the car is probably his greatest liability, as it draws the most attention)?
Once again, I draw your attention to the following thread: http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125142&page=1&pp=25
It was here that we all discussed the reality of being a vigilante in the real world. Go to page 2 or 3 and read a little. In fact, there are some cool links somewhere in there that show some military technology being used or developed that would make being a vigilante a lot easier.

A couple of friends of mine then and I would dress up in very ninja-ish costumes and actually go out at night in the apartment complex that we lived in searching for evildoers.
Of course, being that this was the 80's, our attire looked really stupid. Think teenage ninja new wave humans.
I'm not kidding :(

I have a plan set up,
I will be a vigilante,
I'm going to wait till I'm like 27,
My name will be Haze(Purple Haze)
I have my costume ideas set up,
I will have Kevlar body armor,
Explosives will be in my arsenal,
Motercycle will be the transportation of choice,
I will only do it 13 nights(if I can go that long without getting caught),
this will be over the span of two or 3 months,
Then I will retire, if I am not in prison by then,

Let me tell you a little story......
Once, waaay back in 1985, in the far-away land of Colorado, in the college town of Boulder...There was a string of rapes going on around the University of Colorado campus.
The campus, with it`s sprawling grounds--so picturesque and beautiful in the daytime--made THE PERFECT hunting ground for a sexual predator. There was waay too much area to cover, and the Boulder Police, as well as Campus Security, were incapable of being everywhere all the time.
The female students were warned not to go about unnattended at night....but nonetheless, the incidents continued due to the assorted situations that daily college life resulted in....late night studying ...dates that didn`t work out as planned....parties that turned sour...etc.....
The police attempts at decoy ops were futile, basically because the best of the female officers could in no way pass--even at night--for college-age students.
Then, one person who happened to have the time to get involved in the situation and the motivation, decided to take action. This person had a lifetime`s experience in the martial arts and ample weapons knowledge, as well as a certain knowledge of the stealth techiniques of the Japanese Ninja
( not that those techniques are really all that complex, being really just an awareness that people notice & recognize movement and shape, so limiting the one and altering the other effectively results in a kind of "invisibility" at night).
After three weeks --during which there were two more attacks--this stalwart protector finally was in the right place at the right time, and happened upon an assault in progress. Coming up behind the rapist, he grabbed him by the hair and pulled him backward--removing the straight razor from the young girl`s throat in the process-- and then thrust a Fairbairn Commando Knife through the man`s neck at the base of the skull, effectively severing his spine and leaving him choking upon his own blood.
The victim, already in terror from her rape, found a new horror as the knife point erupted from the throat of her assailant, his blood spurting out onto her. She then screamed in the face of her "saviour" and got up and ran off as fast as she could. From her POV, one crazy had just killed another.
Later, she returned to that spot with police, but by that time, the body was gone and had found a resting place waaay up in the Flatirons, the foothills of The Rockies...Park Land, where it would never be found.
...And even tho no one EVER found out WHO that other "predator" in the night was, he became a "hero" of sorts. People knew that if there were another rapist about, there would also be someone Out There In The Dark...who would be after them as well.
But nothing else happened.
The End.

Of course some things Batman uses exist. That's obvious. But he constantly uses technology that doesn't exist, such as his cape that becomes a glider, and heat sheilds and the like. And bulletproof armor does exist, but nothing that would end up being both funtional and effective. Bullet proof armor is restrictive, even when it's somewhat comromised for movement.

Okay, following Zarathi's example, I've got my vigilante plans:
Start once I move to New York or Chicago after college.
Just gonna wear a nice two-piece suit with possibly some armor underneath and a snazzy hat, plus gloves with metal rods in them and a telescopic baton.
Possibly some tear gas. I dunno. Most likely just some empty bottles.
Mode of transportation: the reliable, respectable Vespa motor scooter.
And my alias...

Yeah I really have seriously thought about it, Iv'e got the fighting skills and I'd need them because I wouldnt use guns or even kill anybody. The ultimate problem is that this is the real world not a comic book and if any of us did try to become vigilanties we'd sooner or later be killed while doing it or caught by the police and it would all be over. But ya I really have thought about it.

When I was a bit younger, more idealistic, and above all, naive, I thought that if I were ever placed in a situation where I could save a life, I would do it. Hell, just a few months ago, I did.
Now, I know better. I don't care about people enough to put my life on the line for them. And they sure wouldn't do the same for their fellow man either. But it's funny this thread was revived, because something interesting happened the other day.
A couple of days ago, I saw my neighbor from up the street. She was running and screaming for help because her boyfriend, who had recently moved in, was beating her up. I could have helped her, but I chose not to. Some people say I was right to not get involved, others said it was cold of me to not help her. So I've been wondering about it for awhile. Still don't know how I feel about the situation.

That boyfriend and girlfriend domestic fght thing is best left as you did. Alot of times you get involved and the girl ends up going back with the guy a few hours/days later, so then your efforts would have been in vain. You did the right thing. If anything, just call the cops and stay out of it, that's what law enforcement is there for anyway.

I thought about starting to take martial arts classes last fall but I never did. I think I was feeling pretty powerless in my life at the time and needed an outlet. I got super into comics that fall too and it stuck. Escapism anyone?
But no, I've never seriously thought about it. I often times try to picture them scrambling around on rooftops for the heck of it during the day and realize how cool it would be if they did exist. I've written a story about one and that seems plenty for me.

You should think about taking Brazilian Ju Jitsu or Muay Thai. That's what i take. They require very little psyical stength and can be mastered by the smallest indidvidual to the largest. It was rough on my body as when you start training at anything, but once i got used to it and started getting the moves down...WOW! Now i can't get enough of it!

Ya'know, I've always been in the same boat. Whenever I see someone getting into trouble (like getting yelled at or escalating whatever), I usually pay more attention to it and kind of prepare myself to go help. I'm a soccer referee and had to throw myself in there to break up fights with people bigger than me. But I've never REALLY had to put myself in harms way. It would be interesting to see if I actually did what I think I would do in my head.

being a lifelong comics fan, of course this has crossed my mind the same as everyone else. for the longest time when I was growing up, pre-teens, I used to come up with all sorts of different ways and costumes to be a superhero, of course thats me being a creative little kid. I never intended to actually do any of it... mostly cause I didn't want to get shot.
it still crosses my mind every so often... if I had superpowers, would I be a superhero? maybe I'd just join the NFL, make millions of bucks. or both!
nothing short of indestructibilty or Wolverine's healing is gonna make me become a vigilante (that whole being shot thing again), so let's say I somehow came into superhuman strength and rapid healing. here's how I would go about this: I think batman is on the money with scaring criminals, though I'd do it in a way that would actually scare them. I'd make a suit, almost like a movie, that makes me look really organic and like a monster. human-like, with defined muscles and veins, jet black. either creepy looking eyes or no facial features at all. I wouldn't say a word, would stick to nighttime and the shadows, and go with the urban-legend route. in theory, this could go on for a while, as long as I could stay away from the cops, or scare them too.

On the subject of the thread...
I've thought it would be kinda neat to do what they do on dateline NBC (you know with the luring in of pedophiles into homes, and then confronting them?). Instead of confronting them with a microphone though, I would blow their brains out with a shotgun.:)
I would do just what they do on there too, have them come in naked, so there is no chance of it just being an accident.
I've just entertained the idea though, I'm not gonna go through with it.:(

I will say this. DON'T think martial arts, especially non competitive martial arts, prepares you for vigilantism. 1) We use guns now and 2) Between boxing, martial arts and rugby, rugby is the most like a real fight. Rugby is fast paced and you don't have time to think of using "raising cranes beak" or whatever. People fight like drunken sailors, they smother you, they choke you, they dogpile you, they chase you, they tackle you....they don't set up in nice fighting stances...and they usually bring friends too.

Shadowboxing, who do you mean when you said there has been a Punisher?
I'm sure plenty of people have went a little crazy and attempted to take the law into their own hands with guns. But I doubt there has ever been a person anywhere near the level of the Punisher.
The Punisher is the most likely superhero to exist in the real world, and possibly the most effective, but also the most wrong. A war veteran using his experience to start a never ending war on crime with an insanely large number of kills under his belt? It's never happened. Could it happen? Yes. It's about as likely though as me being hit by lightening.

Escrima and various other arts where every move counts can save yer life if you master it. And the point of learning martial arts is so you get to the point where you don't even have to think about doing whatever you have to do. Really though, whoever goes to fight crime without a kevlar vest and guns is stupid. Though being a vigilante is a stupid thing to pursue if you have loved ones and family anyway.

I've thought about it. Not that anything bad ever happened to me, I'd be doing it out of boredom. I even designed an outfit that would be mostly bullet proof, but still allow me to move effectively. I even had tons of holsters on it to carry all of the weapons that I had in mind. But to actually make it would cost me a fortune, and there's no way that I could hide all of it. If I could actually maintain my life that way, I would be a bounty hunter. But I'm not sure that I could live off the pay from the bounties, so I'm not sure it would be worth it.
