This is my room back at my parents house taken awhile back (about the start date of this thread). Most of it is still like this, except alot of the figures have been put away, and the DVDs and TPBs are all at my apartment

December 05 update: moved into a new apartment in September, and aligned the collection in a more stylish way. Had planned to take pics at some point, but was just browsing desktop and discovered my fiance already had. They're not as close (or as bright) as I was hoping to take, but they'll do for now

(that's the original artwork for the covers of Ex MAchina #4 and Shaolin Cowboy #1 behind the TV)

Original art collection, finally dug a digital camera out.

two splash pages featuring Speedy from Green Arrow

a two-page splash also from GA featuring Black Canary
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OAGABCHester.jpg

Green Arrow 36 page 19, and one of Mike Mayhew's prelim sketches for the cover of The Pulse #12

100 Bullets #8 pages 20 and 21
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OA100B8p208p21.jpg

100 Bullets 23 page 13 and an unused cover by Tony Harris from Warren Ellis' miniseries Down (although Tony told me this was going to be used, so I need to have words with him at some point...)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OA100B23p13Downunusedcover.jpg

an original Transmet sketch by Derrick Robertson, and Transmet #23 page 14 with the Smiler
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OATransmet23p14.jpg

Transmet #59 page 18 (Smiler gets his comeuppance) and #51 page 21 (hysterical Royce page)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OATransmet59p1851p21.jpg

Preacher #45 p21-22, the pissing on the cross sequence. Unfortunately, some of the word baloons that were attched have become loose. Does anyone know the proper glue to reattache them with?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OAPreacher45p2145p22.jpg

Two pages I am monumentally proud of (I want the second one framed): Runaways #3 page 4, the first time Karolina flies, and #12 page 23, a beautiful splash page of the whole group by Takeshi Miyazawa
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/elijya/sketchbook/OARunaways4p312p23.jpg

These two were just too funny not to get. Runaways 4 page 10, the x-ray scene, and the second is by Mike Mayhew from a wizard article on Brian K. Vaughan.

pobably the most valuable thing I own: The original pencils to the JLA group shot from Identity Crisis by Rags Morales. This image was drawn once then photostated for it's appearences inside the books. It was also used as the cover to the third printing of #1, and on all the promotional materials for the hardcover, and the cover for one edition of the Hardcover.

Heh, I had a room that looked like that. I had Original horror film posters for Hellraiser, TCM, Halloween and The exorcist and toys all over the place and Statues and busts. Then I moved in wityh my Girlfriend.....

Needless to say all the toys and Statues except for a few select ones she lets me put out are in boxes and all the posters are in storage.

Yes my friends, relationships have a price, a heavy price.

Yeah I'm just a huge Punisher freak which is why I always notice AmS 129 if it's around. I huge runs on almost anything Punisher related. Mini 1-5, Regular Series 1-25 and a few odd issues, War Journal 1-10 and a few odd issues plus everthing Ennis has done on the character. I also have his second appearance in AmS 135. All I'm really missing is 129...the holy grail of Punisher books.

Yeah my Detective collection is choppy as well, Batman is what I'm most proud of I have run from issue 350 to Current and I'll go back farther as time goes on but right now I'm trying to get Ghost Rider vol. 2 # 6-25 complete since they're cheap at the moment and I'm trying to get a lot of older flash stuff.

Hehe, you have no idea yet my friend, no idea. My girl and I are close to being engaged *in other words I can't afford the ring she wants yet* If even try to put out something she doesn't like I get the look of death. You don't want to go past that...not if you value your lower extremities.

Get her the ring she wants.

Have a big wedding.

Get a (nice) house.

And keep your collection of over 14,000 comics and god only knows how many toys and dvds etc.

I did it.

You can too.

Stay in school kids!

There'll be a big payoff someday!

I'm working on the ring

I have a decent house that's being paid for *another reason I don't have the ring yet*

I have my collection, it's just not out in the open.

So yeah you can do all of it. It's just that I'll need to buy a house with an extra room to put my collection in if I want it to be visible.

And school does pay off, especially if you're going for your second degree.

Elijya, Since I saw you're little pictures I've upped the ante on my own collection. I already had Batman 350 and down so I went out and bought a Batman 187 in VF condition and I've got a 232 on the way. I'm also paying off a NM copy of ASM 129. Soon I'll have Batman 100-Current and hopefully every issue of any punisher series and all the Key Appearances. I'll take some pics ASAP.

well, they're not in mint condition, and the "cream" so to speak has been collected over the past 2 years. Yeah, most of my paychecks go to comics, I guess. As I've said, I haven't been paying for room or food since I live with my rents currently, so kinda all of my income is disposable. I've just started a new job, so I could be taking in about 50k a year once I get good at it, and I dunno what kinda place I'm gonna be looking to move into, but if it's cheap, I'll have even more $$$ to throw around

Hot diggity damn. That really makes that little 450 comics collection in the corner of my room look tiny, and the limited amount of action figures. I got 5 years to catch up, but I don't think I'll get as far as you have.

different places. The Amazing Fantasy was given to me for my 22nd birthday by my dad last year. He got it at Wizard World Chicago. The Spider-Man #4 I bought at Wizard World Philadelphia. The Avengers #1 I bought from a store in Nashville Tennesee. I'm strugglinging to remember where the other DD came from, but one of them is from fat Jack's Comiccrypt here in Philadelphia. The Hulk 181 comes from Comics and More and is an $800 copy. The Giant Size came from Show Case comics, the store I've been going to all my life

Hey, there are loads of Comic shops in the UK and numerous comic conventions and events. The Comics International website lists plenty of these. I believe there is a big 5 day Comic Conference event in November in Brighton.

If you are after the #1 issues lots of UK shops have these and they have online shopping so you don't even have to be near the shop. Plus you can always order from US online shops and just pay a bit more for the postage.

Ebay UK - has lots of UK based sellers, selling these key issues.

Cool collection man. What grade is Avengers #4 and what would you say the DD #1 and AF #15 are? How much did you pay for them?

Elijya
08-27-2005, 05:01 PM
the avengers 4 is a 4.5. The DD's are somewhere around 2.-3.0. The Avengers #1 is probably about a 4.0 and the spider-man #4 is around there as well. They all ran in the low hundreds

the AF 15 is really beat. You can see the chunks missing from the cover, and there's a crease and a stain going right across the cover. At least the cover is still attached. but I'm not quite sure what that qualifies it for on CGCs scale. I could say 0.5, but then what's a comic with no cover? I could say 1.0, but then what's a comic with interior pages missing? gets a bit fuzzy

dude, I WOULD get higher grade copies if I had more money. As it is, I usually just buy em whe n I see em if I want em, I'm not so picky as to look for specificly low or high grades. Though, If I had that much money, I'm not sure what would be the greater temptation - more Key books, or more original artwork (I have sizable collection I have yet to show any of you)

the tales of suspense is beat to heel. It's, like, a $20 copy. I should look into getting a nicer one, though, since I'm such a big Hawkeye and Green Arrow Fan. I held out for the longest time on GL/GA #76 because I wanted a high grade copy, but they're all too expensive

the hulk 181 is probably a VF+/NM-, the giant size is probably an F/VF or so

my biggest heartbreak is that my ASM 129 is a VERY nice copy, except for a small tape tear in the middle of the logo less than a quarter inch, but other wise mostly flawless. ****ers at CGC gave it a 6.0 even after I resubmitted it

Though, obviuously, the wall books I have pictures of were back issuesIts about half bagged and boarded half just bagged. I pack them pretty tight. I can't look through the boxes unless I remove a big chunk first (I have no idea why I do that). My collection is mostly all backissues. For example I have almost all Claremont X-Men...almost (25 books shy if I recall, I bet you can imagine which ones). I have all but 1 issue of Nocenti DareDevil, and most of Miller DareDevil. I have 200 Captain Americas, 200 ASM, 200 UXM, Every Transformers ever, A handfull of UKs, Nomad, Silver Sable, 130 Fantastic Fours, a whole bunch of b and c list first apps, and whole bunch of b and c list number 1s. My comic collection is mostly Marvel....I'd say the last 2 boxes are new DC (and almost all my trades are DC(older stuff), they are not it the boxes). I like getting originals, thats my thing. I do not like buying a trade of Marvel backissues, I much prefer the original copy.

Remember comics are only of value, if you are willing to sell them. I don't have any plans to sell mine, so value = nothing (until I decide to sell).

I do have some duplicates and I'm planning on putting them on ebay - I just can't seem to find the time to photograpgh, grade and then list each one of them.

Like wolverine25th, generally I don't buy back issues for their value, but because I want to complete a run or they are are issue I want to read - as a result a lot of comics in my collection aren't always in great collection (but it means I'm never scared to read them while eating buttery toast - :D ) , but I have huge runs of titles at low cost.

Since I got married and moved house, space is becoming an issue for my comic boxes - so I've been buying TPBs a lot recently.

Amen, Charles!

Alright, MWM, here's some answers fer ya. Note, I COULD be wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm not:

CGC is a co that grades yer comics an' seals 'em up so they can never be read again an' retain their current condition. Sucks fer readers but great fer old comics that could be lost forever.

In short: no. There's nothin' different between prints except value. Second prints're usually less valuable than th' first an' just meant there was such a demand fer it they hadda go an' print it out again. There are some instances, fer some reason, where th' second print is even MORE valuable than th' original that I've seen, but it's rare as far as I know.

I have no clue about TPB values, but since some stores seem to jack up th' price after a while I imagine they do have some. Probably not as much over time as if you had th' actual issues.

An' unlike UK STU, despite how crappy my comics may be already I treat 'em as if they're mint; which means no buttered toast around mine. ;-) I'm very anal about keepin' things in th' condition I get 'em.

Questions.
What is the cgc?

that's a big question, so let me get back to you in a minute

Does it matter a great deal if the issue you buy is a first, second etc print?

only if the issue in question is of particular value to begin with. Then the first printing is almost always more valuable. Batman:The Killing Joke and The Death of Captain Marvel are good examples of books that have gone through multiple printings and the first printings are worth more than the latter ones

in some cases, there may be a slight change between different printings. For instance, there were a few months in the late 190's where marvel experiemented with selling comics for 35 cents instead of 30 cents in some markets. the books with the 35 cent stamp instead of the 30 cent are much rarer, and in good condition can be ALOT more money. But, for example, an issue of spider-man that might be worth $20 today, would only be worth $30 if it was the 35 cent varient. However, Iron Fist 14, which was the first appearence of Sabretooth, and is worth probably $150 dollars in NM condition, is today worth $1500 to the right buyers. The same goes for Star Wars #1

Do TPBs or hardcovers retain any value over time or just the issues?

they retain their cover price, but they won't increase. The only exception is if they go out of print while there is still a large market for them, such is the case with the Miracle Man trades, which can be worth $100 apeice. The first printing of the Squadron Supreme trade is notorious because the writer of the book and former Marvel EIC Mark Gruenwald passed away and specified that his ashes be mixed with the ink used to print this book (kind of grusome, but it's true). The $75 Absolute Authority vol 1 oversized hardcover was made without anticipaing the demand for it, but because it was an expensive volume, they never went back to print for it. it's now worth at least twice that amount to the right buyers. Similarly, the original Watchmen hardcover now fetches prices in the hundreds

as it is, though, these remain pretty much the only examples of Trades increasing in value, but as years go by, more may occur for one reason or another

Elijya
08-30-2005, 09:57 AM
about you simply wanting to read comics. that's fine, alot of people do that. Alot simply buy them to read, some buy them simply to collect, most do both. Collecting comics of rarity is no different than coin, stamp, or antique collecting. I do both

now as for CGC. As you are probably familiar there exist price guide's for comics. The most well respected is the Overstreet price guide, which determine's the value of comics annually by a panel of comicbook historians and retailers who take into account the scarcity of each issue and the public interest in them. Given the scarsity of, say, Action Comics #1, and the huge amount of interest people have in superman, that book is worth half a million dollars in mint condition (actually, it's worth more, but I won't get into that. But that's only if it's in mint condition. There's a tiered system to determine the condition of a book, as conditions vary alot. As the condition steadily gets worse, the issue is naturally worth less. anyone who runs a comicbook store is expected to be familiar with how to grade a book in order to price it apporiately, and it's wise taht you're familiar too, if you wish to collect them. Overstreet provides a guide on how to grade. Grades stretch from Poor, the worst possible, to mint, which is brand new, right off the presses. certain defects must be determined in order to put a book in the approriate tier, such as are there pages missing or portions cut out, are thier cracks, tears, rips, etc. It's an involved process

the problem comes in that this is not an exact science. To one grader, a book may seem to be in very good condition, but to another, it's in Fine condition. This can vary the price alot, especially on the more expensive books. CGC seeks to level the playing field by training it's graders to hold books to the same standar. They assign a number to the different grades

Mint 10.0
Mint 9.9
Near Mint/Mint 9.8
Near Mint + 9.6
Near Mint 9.4
Near Mint - 9.2
Very Fine/Near Mint 9.0
Very Fine + 8.5
Very Fine 8.0
Very Fine - 7.5
Fine/Very Fine 7.0
Fine + 6.5
Fine 6.0
Fine - 5.5
Very Good/Fine 5.0
Very Good + 4.5
Very Good 4.0
Very Good - 3.5
Good/Very Good 3.0
Good + 2.5
Good 2.0
Good - 1.8
Fair/Good 1.5
Fair 1.0
Poor 0.5

this becomes especially useful when selling a comic on ebay. A person may say that the book they are selling is in near mint condition, but without being able to look at the book yourself, you're simply taking their word for it. However, if the book is CGCed, you can take CGCs word for it, and they have a good reputation

when you give a book to CGC to grade, the take it and have a grader examine it and determine it's grade. They then put the comic in a hard plastic sleeve, resistent to water and UV light which can cause fading, with a label at the top indicating the grade. The plastic sleeve is locked, preserving the book, and guaraunteeing that the person can't take the comic out and put another in in it's place without damaging the casing

so, CGC is useful for a handful of reasons:

you have a valuable book that you wish to have protected and officially appraised

or you're intending to sell the book and wish to have a well known third party appraise it for the benefit of those interested in buying it

that's pretty much it in a nut shell

Good points, but there is a negative aspect to a CGC comic (which is its biggest fault as far as I'm concerned).

Once a comic is CGC'd, you can have to keep it sealed and you can never really look at it or touch it.

Just my two cents...

When its 100% disposable income it kinda is. Upper middle class at the very least.
40k a year in disposable corresponds to about 100 in gross maybe more depending on the area.

Elijya
08-30-2005, 11:21 AM
no, it's not dispoasable. The 40K reflects what I make plus what most people have to pay for. I make 25K a year about, but I figure between room and board I'm saving 15K. So my disposable income is only about 25K, but even that gets taxed. So no, I'm DEFINTIELY not in the 100K range

so where are these comic raters?are they only in America?i really am looking to invest in some rare comics in the future when i get a bit of cash in.

are there any really good comic websites that show you pics of what your buying and also provide really rare comics?

Elijya

I suggest buying the most recent edition of the Overstreet Comics Price Guide whcih is put out once a year. They list virtually every comic ever printed and their theoretical value, plus it has a good guide to teach yourself how to grade comics, and a guide to collecting

but is there any places in Britain that you can buy decent rare comics.

Elijya
10-20-2005, 02:22 PM
there should be a handful of british comicbook shops. I've never been to any, though, so I don't know what they stock. With the older, more valuable comics, be sure that you're getting american versions and not european reprints, though

here's a list of British Comicbook stores
http://the-master-list.com/International/United_Kingdom_&_Ireland/index.shtml

The second biggest ocmic convention in the world is also held in france every year, the Angoulême International Comics Festival attracts something like 200,000 european comic fans. but I'm not sure what the presense of AMERICAN comics is like there, and there isn't nearly as much monotary value in non-american comics. You will be able to find thousands of awesome non-mainstream comics there, though, I'm sure
here's the website http://www.bdangouleme.com/

Realy?? What sets do you have?

I've got:

Marvel Universe sets 1987-1994
Marvel Masterpieces 1992-1996
Marvel Metal
Marvel Flair Annual 1994-1995
All of the X-Men card sets from 1992-1997
All of the Spider-Man card sets from 1993-1997

There's probably a couple more sets that I'm not remembering off the top of my head. My favorites are the Masterpiece collections. That and the ones where when the nine cards are put together they make one big picture. There were several series that did that.

Sparta*

I got all of those, and some more as well. Do you collect the special cards to? like the holograms? I have about 90% of them

Really? Those are pretty much the only ones i'm missing. I have all the gallery, but i'm missing 3 of the double impact...those are so rare now they go for about 50-90 bucks a card, so if you have the 96 masterpieces with all 12 chase cards, you could sell your complete set for about 600 or 700 american (thats what the last complete set I saw on Ebay went for)

I bought a lot of sets from comic shops (cause i've been collecting since I was about 6) but now no comic shops have them anymore so I have to get them from Ebay. I have all the base sets except for some movie ones I don't care about, and a 1966 set that I want really bad. Other then that, I am buying chase cards that I need to complete my sets through Ebay.

update: moved into a new apartment in September, and aligned the collection in a more stylish way. Had planned to take pics at some point, but was just browsing desktop and discovered my fiance already had. They're not as close (or as bright) as I was hoping to take, but they'll do for now

Elijya

no pics right now, unfortunately. But from the top of my head, here's most of what I have (keep in mind I'm not gonna remember page numbers)

-cover to Ex Machina #4 http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=30175276240%204
-cover to Shaolin Cowboy #1 http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=73630368377%201
-cover to Invincible TPB vol 4 http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=list&title=42776555229&snumber=1
-cover to transmetropolitan #36 http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=89606948996%2036
-an unusued cover for Powers
-cover to Green Arrow #58 (I think, it hasn't been released yet. It's the one with Merlin)

interior pages
-last splash page from transmetropolitan 53 (I have about 5 Transmet pages, but don't recall all issue/page #s)
-many green arrow pages ( a painted splash page from The Longbow Hunters; three splash pages with Mia: where she's firing an arrow upside down, fight training with ollie, and the first time she appeared in the speedy costume)
-both the edited and unedited last page of Thunderbolts #30
-From Preacher - the pissing on the cross sequence
-splash page of the Russian holding a minigun from MK Punisher
-From Runaways - the "x-ray" page, the group splash page at the end of and #12, and #4 page 3 http://milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=page3&issue=70391594988%204

sketches:
I have dozens of sketches, far too many to list, and many by people you haven't heard of. But of note, my Green Arrow Sketchbook has peices by Phil Hester, Mike Grell, Matt Wagner, and Neal Adams
-A painted Green Arrow original by Mike Grell
-a Cyclops and Phoenix by Dave Cockrum
