Yes, I moved to a new location....pretty darn huge so storage space which was my biggest problem before is no longer an issue now.
Sorry I've not updated this as of yet but I only go internet a few days ago...and finally hooked up.

The cowl is NOTHING like the one I posted with the leather suit...I've done so much work on it since then that it may as well be an entirely new sculpt.

Mods...are you cool with this? I tried emailing the Admins months ago to get permission to do this when the views were only at 50,000 but got no response. Please let me know if this is ok and not against any rules.

wow... your talent is only eclipsed by your hart my man. I don't know too many people who would even have bothered to share their work on the level you have with us much less give any of it away. Makes us feel like we are a part of the art :)

As far as I'm concerned you guys deserve a shot at this. Many times I was not on top of my game...then I'd come here and read the replies and feel all giddy inside....:)
Never once has anyone dragged me into a flame war...criticisms were always respectful of the fact that it was a fan made suit....I dont know what else a guy like me could ask for in an internet community.

The way I see it we're all Batman fans here and someone will need to make a good home for a part of this begins suit I've made....and the prize will be a critical part of the suit, probably THE most critical part depending on your point of view....in other words not a set of cape clips or knee caps...:)

Yea....I ended up knowing about the thigh straps before the film opened and thought of our little discussion on them and realized right away I was wrong...and now every time I see the film...I think I've seen it 6 times already...anyhow every time I see it and he's in the presuit I think about how I was insisting they weren't there...LOL!
I cant even watch the movie in peace now..hahahahahahahahahahahhaha.

I have a new camera but cant get it to work....I'm not much for digital stuff...computers, eh...I think by now you all know that's not my territory either.

I'll get someone else to take them tomorrow for me so you can actually make out the details.

I'm still polishing it up...but even though it's not 100% done you can see just how close I am.
The pics I posted a while back with the leather suit and the begins cowl were just shots of the cowl 'plug' used for a second mold....this is now going to be the mold I make for the wearable cowl.

Again...sorry about the bad pics. My new place is being prepped for the studio and the lighting so far is nothing to write home about..not to mention that demon of a digital camera...

I looked in every page, and found I wrote a coment on page 26 (thank God)! Ironically I asked about the sculpture and the mold, and you said the sculpture would be destroyed. I'm glad you didn't destroy it right away, hence this contest.

Ask me, sell the sculpture on ebay and live like a king!

Actually the sculpture was destroyed.

Here is the process I've gone through so far..

-Clay sculpture of cowl over a persons life cast.
-Silicone mold of cowl clay sculpture once the cowl was complete.
-Silicone mold is then removed from clay sculpture and clay sculpture of the cowl is destroyed.
-Various castings are made from the silicone mold and one of those castings is in ultracal 30. A plaster 'like' material that cures to the hardness of stone.
-The stone cowl casting is then sanded glass smooth and all the edges are made to match and evened out.
-New silicone mold is made of stone cowl.

That new mold is now the one used for the actual rubber cowl that will be worn.

See?...many stages go into getting the final product out. All the while the sculpture does get destroyed but the mold you've taken allows you the freedom to then improve and work with sandable materials....end result...glass smooth finishes and machined-like edges. Once this is complete the subtle texture is added to the cowl and it's DONE!

I will outline the details of the contest by weeks end.
You will all have ample time to complete the necessary task and submit your entry by the deadline.

All entries will THEN be posted here publicly...but anonymously...assuming we can all keep our entries private or that would kind of spoil it for the others.

Depending on the amount of entries....enter as often as you like....you the members of the HYPE will judge the top 10 or 5 or 3. 10 if we have a lot of entries...and less if we dont have too many. Regardless...once they've been narrowed down to a certain number of finalists, I'll decide the winner based on various criteria that will be outlined in the contest details.

I think it will be fun.....but I am keeping the contest details quiet for now because I dont want anyone to start just yet.......:)

David, I personally would like to take the time to congratulate you on such a wornderful job. No matter what anyone else says, you are a great artist,sculpture, and a human being. for even presenting the opportunity to us, that are more than humbled just be able to witness the masterpiece as you have worked on it. But, I feel very like garbage for losing my patience with you earlier whenever so many things where up in the air. It is why I am volunterring to take myself out of the contest, if you hadn't already. There are many more deserving fans that didn't waver in their support in you and what you are doing/did.
Well. I see that nothing has been updated with this thread since Friday basically. I'm alittle disappointed. I thought we all wanted to see this "thing". It's a shame to think of all the time waiting for updates only not to receive them. What's the deal? I use to be a fanboy of the Keaton costume but now when I see it after watching Begins, Bale's costume looks much better and Keaton's is terrible.

The only reason Batman '89 still stands is becuse of Nicholson as The Joker.

Community support is something I value deeply. I dont think I could have achieved the results I did without your help so this is my way of saying thank you.

Here's the deal....

I will be posting a bunch of pics of the my Begins Chest Piece, The Begins Cowl, Gauntlets, Collar Clips, Cape, Legs and Boots...belt will be the Rubies one but it rocks, Progress pics of me working and finally some pics of me in costume....finally..:)
I'll also mix it up by posting other Batman items I've made in the past and am currently working on and those can (and hopefully will) be used too. DKR, Bob Kane, 89 stuff, Panther...custom cowls...

The Guidlines are as follows....

Use any of the pics I post or combinations of pics I post and combine them to make one of the following:

- Movie Teaser Poster/ or an Official Poster. Make something up based on what pics I post...
- Desktop Page Picture
- Splash page
- Just make something cool with the photos I post.....:)

As long as you use at least one of my pics and manipulate it as you like that will be fine with me. Use different backgrounds, different colors...blurr it...I dont know...whatever it is you can do. Artwork drawn by hand is also cool if you dont want to use the computer, just base it on any of the pics I post.

I'm simply looking for something creative to be done with any and all of the pics I post. If you know how to use the various tools in the computer then put them to good use...Photoshop, Flash...whatever...I dont even know what most of that stuff is anyhow...:) Make it look cool and show us all that effort went into it and you'll have a darn good shot at the prize...

Contest starts once I put up the pics.
I need to finish the legs but we're pretty much there anyhow so I will need a few more days...but once I post the pics....the contest starts.

I'm thinking of having it go approx 3 weeks. Some people expressed that they'd like to be part of this but will be gone for a bit or leaving soon so I figure once I post the pics you'll have 3 weeks to complete your entry/s. I need a few days...week at the most to finish mine anyhow so we should all be fine with that deadline.

- Enter as often as you like.
- Do not openly post your entry until the deadline. I will see about getting an email addy that can handle all the entrys sent to it then I will post them. I may need someone's help with that if one of you guys has the knowhow for this sort of thing...:)

Once all the entries are posted you will all get a chance to vote on your favorites...and it would be best if the entries were anonymous. Vote on your favorites....once it's narrowed down to a top 10 (if we have a lot of entries) or top 5 or top 3 (if we dont get many) then I will choose the winner from the finalists.

A couple of suggestions. Shoot some clear pics. Try not to add any lighting . IE: Heavy shadows, too light, too dark. If you can shoot them in front of a green (or other color) sheet or screen, that helps big! Big pics help too. Host them @ imageshack so they stay big. If you can do multiple poses in one controlled environment it keeps the color and lighting even. If you can use multiple light sources when you shoot them so the detail wil be clear all around.

This makes it easier too alter and also to play with the lighting effects one can do.

That will give us the chance to do a better variety.

Oh yeah, HURRY I WANT TO GET STARTED!!! :D

You can draw something if you like.

The 2 things I'll be looking for are 'wow' factor...which is very vague I know but if it takes your breath away then that's what I call wow....
AND Effort...this will seriously weigh in as the most important thing...if the time and effort is shown in your work it will put you in the running...

There is no age limit to this what so ever....you want a shot at it then go right ahead....:)

Also the suggestion of how to take the pics was very good. I will try to do that.

So I have a question for David, not about the contest though.

I am wondering if you had any tips on how to get some unique boots for costumes like this. I'm working on a Superman Returns "inspired" costume (it may not be identical as I may make a few personal tweaks, but we'll see how it goes.)

Hey guys...quick update here..:)

We landed a pretty big costuming gig that has sort of slown down my own personal projects. This Begins stuff being one of them.

This project should be out the door by mid week then I can get back to finishing and getting the pics online for the contest.

I've still been doing some work on it but not as much as needed to finish it thanks to the 'day job'.

It is however all still on and going ahead as promised.
Once the pics are officially up that's when it'll start.

As you know I have been making a Begins Cowl and Suit and need a little advise of sculpting tools. I am working on the suit at the moment and have a basic shape but need to start on the details i.e the abs area. Can you suggest some good tools or a few techniques, it would be really appreciated. I have a week off work end of August and hope to have the suit done in that week.

A million things just keep happening here....well good things all work related but it keeps me away from getting going on this.
I honestly am sorry for the delay here guys...but I dig the nipples on the Begins suit though...LOL!

Here's what I think will happen...
My suit needs to be done for Dragon Con which is in 3 weeks. Of course it needs to be done way before hand for the photos to be taken properly so just hang in there a little longer.
The cowl has gone through yet ANOTHER change and you guys should notice the difference...in a good way I think.

Chest is done...cowl pretty much...Legs just about...Cape done...Knee caps done, Boots done..Belt, eh...for now the Rubies one and it's not bad anyhow, Gauntlets done...so just please sit tight and let me finish up all this stuff going on in my day job and this will get back on track.

Once again, my most sincerest apologies for the delay. :)

Well it's not the full suit but we're really getting there now...Just a couple of teaser pics. The Toronto Comic Convention is this weekend...I'll be showing the full suit by then. I'm really sorry for the blurry pics. New camera but it's a little tooo sensitive.

Again...none of the armor is acutally mounted, and the cape is also not fitted to the chest piece but....works for test pics.

Here's a couple of back spine pics. The spine is still not complete as a few elements are missing but this gives an idea of what's to come. Also it's shiny because it was just demolded moments before these pics were taken.

Well the cowl, chest, gauntlets, collar clips, Belt (rubies), boots and knee caps are done...the legs might not be for the weekend but that's no biggie. If that's the case I'll just wear Panther suit legs. Dont worry though...No nipples..:)

Yup...the NOMAX survival suit. :)
It's all being sculpted in sections. Not as a full piece like the Batsuit and in the end they 'should' all fit together like a great big puzzle.

Here's a few from the Toronto Comic Con.
I'll have to make 2 posts for the pics as I can only do 5 in each post.

I consider this a dress rehearsal really.
The legs are nearly ready so I stuck with my leather hero pants...and the chest is NOT glued down. Just held on with one strap. Still...by far my most comfortable suit. Total movement in any way shape or form I choose. It even buckles the same way in the shoulders as the movie suit which is kinda cool..

Still, had a bit of fun with it. I was asked over and over again if it was the real suit, which is always nice to hear. :)

Because it was polished once I put it on. The camera pics up the shine but it wasnt noticable in person. I also made the cowl casting in 15 minutes so it was rushed. Once the polish sets into the silicone it's as nice as the chest piece looks.

Also thanks to everyone for the very kind words. I'll be at Dragon Con this weekend and once I get back the contest can officially start!!!!

One thing I don't like about the jacket is how the biceps are not attached to the arm. It looks goofy to me. Otherwise it's a cool jacket. DYR1's is anyway, not sure about the ebay one. Why do you say the guy ripped David off Batsone? Because they look alike, or did the guy actually buy one of David's and disect it for the patterns?

That's exactly what he did.
The jacket I made was influenced by the Begins look. Influenced.
It has influences from the Xmen costumes, Daredevil, Panther and Begins but at least 60% of it is all custom and my design.
The double sleeve is completely MY design. I came up with it, I engineered it and I made it work. Like it or hate it (which is totally fine with me) it is my design. No one had ever done that before in the garment industry.
Now this person has taken it uppon himself to get my jacket, that I made for several people but without the bat on the chest as the bat on the chest was ONLY done for myself, he took his patterns from it and copied it flat out.

Then in his auctions he says that only 200 were made for the film and for a clothing company. What a crock of sh&t. That is MY design he has copied and it was not done for the film, nore were 200 jackets done.

He could of designed his own look but he copied mine flat out. The only thing is his work is not at all up to the task of doing something like this. It takes passion, time and skill to do a jacket like that and do it right. Even though he copied mine his still looks like a 2 year old made it. The shoulders are the size of basket balls, the abb's look like garbage and the double sleeve looks horrible.
I've gotten more emails in the last few days from people asking me what was going on with this particular jacket than ANYTHING else ever.

This is the second garment of mine he has copied, and he has also recast my work.

Thanks to this guy and how he's advertised his jacket....and how bad his looks....my inbox has been full of requests to get one of mine FROM ME because after seeing the so called competition, people STILL would rather come to me for this.

I know my leather work. Costuming is in my blood. I would never do something that looks as bad as that jacket does. Do it right or just dont do it.

You decide...compare the two and you'll see clearly that this so called 'garment maker' isn't anywhere near my league be it in quality, style, look or over all impact of design. His stitching is warped, his shapes are distorded and his proportions suck. I am never critical like this of anyone's work but copying my stuff then lying about it by passing it off as legit stuff for the movie....I dont think so....

Well, maybe you're right.
However much has changed in the industry since I wanted to have this contest. I post on these boards for fun, and share my work as a fan just like the rest of you but these are places that are open to the entire public and everyone who is remotely interested or associated with a given franchise keeps close tabs on these places. Fans and industry people alike view or post here. Keep in mind that I work in this industry. As it turns out something as harmless as giving away a cowl isn't exactly as harmless as I thought.

I understand if some of you will be angered by this but I hope everyone truly understands when I say I 'cant' have this contest. In other words it's out of my hands and unfortunately it was a mistake on my part to want to do this.

I just want everyone to know that my intentions were sincere, but I'm up against a brick wall now. My apologies to all.
