Hope I'm posting this in the right section.....he'ya Snipe.:)

Keep in mind...it's still being ironed out.
Much has changed since these pics but...what the hell...

Here's a teaser for ya'..

Any and all Comments welcome.....just please keep it in regards to what you are seeing here. If you are not a fan of the Begins suit, feel free to also comment...Please do, but I'd like to keep this thread focussed on the accuracy rather than if the Begins suit is cool or not.

OK...enough blabbing....LOL

Sculpting with water clay......and this is really from the beginning
stages....All lines still need to be made crisp and angled properly not to mention here I was no where near getting the bat right for the emblem area.

I'm hoping to bring the latex cast piece to DC to show my buddies!!!

Enjoy!

looks awesome so far, bro. by the way...are you gonna do the whole costume, or just the chest piece and cowl??? if you do more, you should get rid of the cape clasps and have the cape connect in the middle.

DorkyFresh
08-26-2004, 03:21 PM
Well now....it wouldn't be a Begins suit without the clasps would it? hehe

Anyway, I DID notice that there's a line that seperates the top of the abs from the ribs and you ended it on the side after the 3rd rib (right before it curves straight down). I'm looking at the same picture you were and I don't see that the line ends....from what I, myself, can see...the line keeps going all the way down to the belt. Anyway...maybe you saw something I didn't, but I'm just lettin' you know what I see.

Yes, you're right. These pics were taken a few days ago...since then that line if I understood what you were talking about, and I think I did...:) is already there.
Those pics are of early stages...once details started being added in.

Thanks again everyone!

Woah.....thanks eveyrone!!!!!

:)

I'm glad you're happy with this sneek peek...LOL

Someone asked how long a sculpt like this takes??...well it depends on how often I work on it.....

For this one I need it cast up fast...real fast and I'm much quicker at sculpting with water clay then with Oil clays...so it was started last week...and better be done by this weekend!!!
A sculpt can take months..It took me about 9 months of on and off sculpting to make the Darkness head from Legend...I have a bunch of sculpts that still need to be completed like the DKR bust.

It'll all get done, sooner or later...I wish I had a 3rd arm sometimes....(insert joke here!!!LOL)

Ok, this looks great DAVID. Your sculpt has really increased my interest in the BB suit. I may even go so far as to say that i now like the BB suit more since viewing your sculpt.

Would you be so kind as to discribe the entire process you go through to create such a masterpiece because i have an interest in knowing have these suits are put together...

By the way, will you be able to wear this when its finished?....

Ok let's see....

Will it be flexible ? Yes...not like the movie one but pretty flexible still.

Is it heavy? Right now, yes...it's a clay sculpture. The finished piece will weigh 5-8 lbs.

Next pics?...I dont know, once I'm comfortable showing it all I guess..:)

Do I need someone to get me coffee??...No I need an apprentice. Basically I need a SideKick....a Robin....uhh, actually I need 3 of them but you get the idea. :)

I would love to find someone locally that I could apprentice with to learn how to do this. I've done a lot of theatrical make-up and I'm considered very good at it but I've never created a long lasting prosthetic like that.

Usually, it's just a quick plaster-of-paris mold and straight liquid rubber (it's late and I'm pulling a brain cramp for the name of liquid rubber!). I pour the rubber in and let it cure over the course of a few days. The finished peice is good for a little while but then it starts to shrink and harden.

I'd love to learn the proper way to do this. The right molding materials and the proper way to creat a foam rubber appliance.

David.. my respect for what you do is immeasurable.

Batman

you know what would really be a cool project David(dont take this suggestion seriously)is if you tweaked the Begins suit and made it into a Robin suit so we could get an idea of what the Robin suit might look like if he shows up in a sequel.(by tweaked,i mean instead of the bat symbol, add an R to the left pec and make a face mask instead of a cowl, paint it red and green, add the Forever cape, and maybe make a different belt)

that would be interesting to see(but like i said, dont take this suggestion seriously, its just an idea i just had)

Glad you like it. :)

Sort of...wont use the wetsuit because that is too uncomfortable and hot to wear. I'll glue it down to a long sleeved cotton shirt...same for the legs. Should work just as well without having to dislocate my shoulder to take it off or put it on.

thank you. Hey, some girl who shops at the store came on with this thick polyester/lycra material that had almost a Leather like-vynal look to it, but was actually pourous cloth. I figure if you can find the right material, you can have someone tailor a jumpsuit that could blend in with sculpted foam better than spandex, with less touch ups.

And though you can tell you've been hammering out the sculpture, have you started exsperimenting with foams and possible skins? I know that theres like 15 densities of Foams you can buy anymore, and the suit looks very thin in recent photos, so I figure its going to be a pain to find one that will work for it.

All my muscle suits are cast in latex skins and inner cast foams.
As a result all the muscle suits are pretty flexible and easy to wear.

Some suits have molds with cores while others dont.

This first one will be thick, yet semi-flexible latex. I have to bring it to Atlanta,Georgia next weekend for Dragon Con and dont want to risk anything happening to it...after that....all my replica suits I make for myself will be latex and foam cast.
I make my own foam in house now and I just might try a silicone skin to see how this can look and move in silicone.

Anyhow I dont want to move too fast here....:)...once the sculpt is complete I'll mold it then bring one with me...when I get back I will take a short Vacation...like a day or so...LOL then worry about all the other stuff!!!!...
As for the fabric..sounds cool however you really wont see any of it other than the elbow area and inner thighs and knees. Besides, I will coat that area in latex so it'll be a perfect match.

Thanks for the tip....let me know if that fabric is light....may have other uses for it if it's not too expencive.

Yep, the grey of that clay (and it is just the clay, it's not what the final suit(s) will be made of) is probably the right shade of grey that a black and grey suit should be in a movie.

I can't wait to see David's all black and black and grey (and David, make sure the grey IS pretty dark) Begins suits side-by-side and see how "camp" the B&G looks (i.e no-more camp than the black one).

He won't sell you any because it will get him in deep ****. You're not allowed to make something based on a character someone else owns and then sell it. Otherwise all the guys who can make movie-quality costumes (and there are a few who can) would be selling them.

There are people who sell generic (i.e. non copyright infringing) armour, but anything with bats or scallops on it is a no-no for selling.

DAVIDYR1
08-29-2004, 11:10 PM
The cape clasps, cape clips dont really bother me anymore. Sure that first EW pic really freaked me out...they looked like a dress shirt collar but now....they sort of fit in with the whole look of this costume. Not bulky and rather subtle...I am fine with them.

Had they not been in B&R...it would be easier for most to accept them but let's face it....they really arnt that bad now. Hey, it's not like it has nipples or anything like that....LOL!!

Again, I really appreciate the kind words. Trust me, I'd love to make a suit for everyone but that just isnt possible. This is my personal costume and it will be my tribute to the film. I'm pleased with everything about this movie so far....the car, the actors...the suit......c'mon...Bale is Batman!!!!

The new suit IMO rocks!!!!!! I hope to do it justice!!!!

The clasps aren't bad, but they are a symptom of the way the cape is done, which isn't as comic-like as it could be. And, they could be a little subtler, as it is they're big chunky triangles. But at least they aren't little bat-symbols.

What I wouldn't mind seeing it ONE clasp, small and black, in the centre below his neck, from which both sides of the cape would hang and fasten together. That would be comic-style and very logical.

Something like this toy (I've got one too, it's nifty)... you can see a round thing in the centre that looks like a clasp:

No, keep it simple, I think. I don't want the symbol to be attached to the cape in any way. The cape should obscure the symbol when it's allowed to hang down in front.

Of course, for most action scenes, the cape would be flippped behind his shoulders, and the symbol would be clearly visible

Yes, they're super big compared to norman human beings, but hey.....he's a superhero!!!!...and thanks to the fact that for the tv show they were infact sculpted that big means I'll have pretty good neck movement...err, I hope!

:p

Not nearly as easy a sculpt as this seems. Sure there's nothing really to this detail wize but getting it to look like the tv show Flash was the challenge...we'll see by Friday what this whole suit looks like..... :joker:

My site may be down for a bit as the new one is being uploaded.

I make costumes for a living...that means it's my job...even if the ones I usually post here are from my personal collection... even years ago when I made them only for fun or a hobby, I still found it a cool thing to do...as did pretty much anyone who I met, spoke to or hung around with, but I'm really the only one that needs to be pleased with what I do..still, it is humbling when I post pics of my work here and read the comments by everyone. I cant express how happy it makes me when so many of you are so kind with your replies here :).

As far as money to me....nope. Not my place. He did his work and if his auction piece sells then all the power to him. I'm just greatful that he's mentioned my name. This was Bob Kane's vision of Batman from 1939...now a days there's people like us who bring these visions to life with our own personal twists. Alex Ross is a big influence to many of us where things like this are concerned.

If anyone knows him, or if he's a member here I'd love to talk with him and possibly get one of these works of art from him.

Thanks for posting this link. :)

Now the story, my compagny i've been hired by score to create this character, im not here to discuss it being a good idea or not the fact is they wanted it. The only reference i had for the modeling was the pic you all know now with Bale crounching and, in front pose on the background. The 3D character has been modeled and rendered in 5 days. The fact is, it obviously has some "off" details but considering the time i had, and the lack of references it was nearly imposible for me to model something more accurate, i tried to stick as closely as possible to the design but this wasnt that easy, some of you certainly know how hard it is to model a human body. The renderings above are infact from the magazine cover. Antares is responsible for these beautiful works of art!! Big thumbs up!!

They are extremely helpful and already neatly saved in a folder with the rest of my reference material. Thanks Spanish for posting them here! Any and all reference material here is welcome.

As for the discussion of what and where neoprene is used on this Begins costume..well it's simple. All the elemets we see as Armor are mounted onto a neoprene wetsuit...just like the previous Batman movie costumes and Neoprene is similar to what the Spiderman costume was made from..which I am a huge fan of!

So the neoprene is the understructure of the Begins costume. All the elements you see with the details are cast up in foam latex.

Hope that helps a bit.

I didnt even know it was you how posted the pic on the blade boards, but its fine, i was saying i think its cool.... that someone was like "hey Goyer look at this." like in a good way. and same for the costume renderings..... im saying im glad that we know they're fake now.... that is what the cover of the mag was made from right? those renderings?

hey david, can you tell what his gauntlets are made of? they don't look metal in the above renditions.

antmanx68

The 3D model above has the gauntlets as not being solid (like leather or something) but every photo of the suit suggests that the gauntlets are shiny and solid, like a metal or hard plastic.

Here ya go buddy!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v83/Geijutsuka/Manips/differences.jpg

1 - The shoulder "pad" isn't as round as yours. Yours looks sort of like an oval, but the real suit looks sort of like the part nearest the chest is a straight line. And the official suit's "pad" isn't as thick as yours.

2 - The point on the bottom of the wing isn't as narrow as yours and it points more downward than yours.

3 - The 2nd abdominal section extends outward a little bit more than the 1st, 3rd, and 4th. On your suit...all the abdominal sections all aligned.

4 - The line seperating the 2nd and 3rd abdominal sections goes more upwards on the original suit. Your suit has the line slightly sloping downwards.

That's all I can see for now...there's one VERY minor detail that's different, which is the BUILD of the Batsuit. But of course...Bale's Batsuit is custom fitted so I doubt you could get THAT exact, but other than that...I can find anything else. Hope I helped you out, David.

Cool!!!
Thanks a bunch. Seeing a side by side comparison really helps!!

1 - I totally agree with you...and will be adjusting this accordingly.

2 - Also correct. I 'd been using the diagram of the emblem since day one and since the newer pics have come out I still havent changed my stencil, but yes...that is also part of what needs to be changed.

3 - Although my entire Abb's section will be redone from scratch...I have it on good authority, VERY good authority that the details here are not 100% correct to the finished suit. There are some very subtle differences between the screen used suit and this photo...again, talking about the abb area. Why this is... I dont know..maybe the photograph was accidently tweaked before it was released...cant say...but from my 'unofficial' OFFICIAL pic, the abbs are slightly different in that section...again, that section only. There is a lot more going on with that area than that pic shows. I have yet to have sculpted it in.:)

4 - Yes, also correct.

This was very helpfull.
Keep in mind that the entire 8 pack of abb's will be totally resculpted as I now see clearly what I need to complete them and the rest of the suit properly.

Thanks again my friend!

David

PS..I get a lot of emails asking if I can share my material source for this sculpt. Now I see it starting here openly too...:)
I wish I could, but it's just not possible. I cannot under any cercumstances openly post, emial or discuss any of the pics or info I have...and trust me..what I have is not much.

David, just wondering... how can you be certain that the pictures you are working from are absolutely of the final suit? You even say there are differences between your reference pics and the one leaked full-body pic we've all seen, and we've yet to see ANY clear pictures of the final, final suit.

This may not be the case, but to me at least, the pecs on your sculpt don't match what little we've seen of the one used in the movie. All the pics we've seen (the first EW pic when lightened up, the one from a magazine with Oldman and Bruce sitting in their fold-up chairs) look to me to have smooth pecs, without the sharper edge and indented line defining the lower pecs. They seem to have a more organic "man-boob" shape.

Now it could be that your reference pics and your sculpt are right, and the pics we've seen just aren't able to convey such detail. Or it could be that the pics you're working from are of a slightly earlier design that doesn't match the final one.

I admit I may be reading something into pictures that really aren't that clear (I can't find the sticky image thread, so I can't point out any examples) but it still poses the question: can you be certain the suit you're sculpting is the same one Bale will be wearing? To a certain extent it doesn't matter - to 99% of people your suit will look spot-on, the differences will be negligable.

I guess I don't really have a point - just throwing some thoughts out at you.

Good question.
The pecks are as I've sculpted them...I have no doubts about that at all. I have far too many pics to compare this particular detail to. It's also on one of the leaked photos you've all seen...it's just difficult sometimes to actually see what we're all looking at. Case in point...some people see the suit as a full one piece...I see it as 2 separate pieces and separate gauntlets...some people still see the arms going all the way down to the wrists...I see them stopping at the elbow..well a bit above...look at some of the leaked pics...you'll see the outline on the pecks too, just look for it..the artwork for BB doesnt have them, but then again some details are completely missing from there.

The first thing I should point out is that my sculpt is no where near being complete at this stage. None of us, myself included should be basing my current sculpt which is a work in progress to the leaked pics and making comparisons...:)

-The EW pic was computer generated...kick ass but not accurate.
-The leaked pics dont show enough detail in the abb's to confirm things one way or the other.
-The pics I have are of the official suit...as are the leaked photos...just that the leaked pics are not high res shots...try blowing them up...you lose the details. My high res pics can be blown up and still maintain the detail making it easy to see exactly how things work, what goes where and so on...still it's difficult to replicate things from photos and not always do I get it right.

The reference pics I have do infact show the abb's clearly...I just havent finished that area up yet. Actually, as much as I can look at reference pics...the best way to know how far I'm off with this sculpt is to compare it to the one above...the 2 halves side by side. Even though the abb's on that one (leaked pic) are blurry and tend to show the details in one sence, I believe they are slightly different...again, slightly. I'm trying to get this as close as possible but will never get it exact no matter how hard I try. If my previous costumes are any indication as to how accurate, or not I can be then this one should turn out fine...hoping....LOL

Again, I've been posting my sculpt as it is being worked on. It's not even 50% complete so much has yet to be done. I'm hoping that by posting here, and having it critiqued by the members here...that together we can find out what is right, wrong and what seems off to get it as close as possible.

I'll have more updates on this soon.

I'm sure he's having fun and I don't think any of us that made comments were trying to put the guy down but in that one shot he should of at least tried to suck it in a bit. I don't think the guy was trying to put the guy down sure it's not the most polite thing to say but there are alot of other ways he could of put it that would of made it much more degrading. Basically I think if your going to dress up like Batman and you don't have the same physique as Batman should have (hell do any of us have that?) you should make an effort to hide it. The guy was kind of letting it all hang out in that shot, he should of draped the cape around himself to give the costume (kick ass costume) a better effect.

This is really helping me along quickly.

Keep the feedback coming....dont be shy. :)
Here's what I did after DorkyFresh was cool enough to do that wicked photoshop work showing both my half and the original half side by side.

-Redid the shoulder.
-Redid the abb's. Made them more subtle and the entire rib area also redone.
-Touched up the Bat on chest.
-All rib and side details much more subtle now...hard to see unless the light causes it to cast a shadow...that's a good thing BTW.

Again, no where near being complete but I think with the comments and suggestions here we're getting closer and closer each time. Some of you notice things that I get used to seeing...and vice/versa so I really appreciate you guys taking the time to chime in!!! :)

DorkyFresh any chance you can photoshop this new pic for me and do that side by side thingamagiggie again? I'd need my half flipped to simulate the entire sculpt and the half/half with the original as you did above.

David are you planning on finishing the suit before the movie is released, or waiting till after or nearer to it release to go over any final details?
If you're planning on finishing it before the release, any idea what the final colour you will be applying to it will be?

I noticed the updates but the shoulder still looks the same, too round. I don't meant to nitpick, I just thought I give my advice.

Looks incredible though.

Love your work.
