You no like Ronny James Dio? Not in Sabbath. DIO was good. "Holy Diver" and "Don't talk to Strangers" are two of my fave songs. I just dont like the Black Dio stuff. Its just not Sabbath. Kinda like to a lot of people. MetallicA died with Cliff. Once you replace someone so pivotal, its never quite the same.

Wrong
I've been wrong for far too long
Been constantly so frustrated
I've moved mountains with less
When I channel my hate to productive
I don't find it hard to impress
Bones in traction
Hands break to hone raw energy
Bold and disastrous
My ears can't hear what you say to me
Hold your mouth for the war
Use it for what isn't for
Speak the truth about me
Determined
Possessed
I feel a conquering will down inside me
Strength
The strength of many to crush
Who might stop me
My strength is in number
And my soul lies in every one
The releasing of anger can better any medicine under the sun
There comes a time within everyone to
close your eyes to what's real
No comprehension to fail
I vacuum the wind for my sail
Can't be the rest
Let others waste my time
Owning success is the bottom line.
Like a knife into flesh
After life is to death
Pulling and punching the rest of duration
NO ONE can piss on this determination

Yeah. Metallica use to kick ass. Their first 5 albums were excellent. But ever since they released Load, its just been down hill from there. They keep getting worse and worse. Have you heard their new album, St. Anger? It royally sucks! Playing that dumbass NuMetal BS! That ain’t friggin Metal, and never will be! They use to be the biggest Metal band to me. But now I see them for the sellouts they've become. What a pity to waste such talent on such a lousy genre as NuMetal. :(

Back when they had Cliff and Dave...Even Rod McGovney, they had a raw aggression that is what gained them their fan base. Now it's only kids and new fans. There aren't many of the old fans left

Yes, they were called Rainbow and he was with them once. Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist of Deep Purple. Ronnie was lead singer of Rainbow for their first 3 albums, but left after he was offered to be the new singer of Black Sabbath since Ozzy had left them.

Manowar are the Kings of Metal. They are all the the great things we like about Heavy Metal rolled into one! Plus unlike GNR, they are a band and not just one single guy who just owns the name of the group and can just change the lineup when he feels like it.

Ronnie James Dio has it when it comes to sheer talent. His vocals have no equal. Glenn Danzig has it when it comes to stage presence. No one can match his potential for putting a touch of evil in the air.
Likewise, any line-ups led by either of these two men would have to be in the running for best band from the 80's til now ... and especially Sabbath fronted by RJD. His songwriting and Iommi's guitar work are a perfect mesh that cannot be easily compared to.

But thats the problem. Because of Venom, Death and Cannibal Corpse, the Heavy Metal genre has been pretty much black listed from the mainstream music scene. Its also because of them that most of the Metal bands (Non-mainstream) I find out about are just these lame-ass Death and Black metal bands! A bunch of goofy looking MFs, who look like rejects from KISS and sing like the Cookie Monster getting prison raped! Using this stupid satanic gimick to make up for their bad musicianship. And I've heard that some of them really are satanists! I once heard about this Norwegian black metal band called Mayhem that really were devil worshipers, who burned down churches! Plus one of the members ate someguys brains and right now the lead guitarist (I think) is serving a life sentence for killing one of his band mates!

Granted, Venom didnt have outstanding musicianship, and dude sounded like he gargled with razor blades, but once again, they took metal to new heights (or depths) and as a result, the following acts have tried to immitate something that shredded in the early to mid 80's.
Unfortunately, that time was 20 some years ago. Of course it's not gonna work.

But why do they want to immitate something that sucks? Just because everyone immitates something, doesn't mean its any good. Look at the Grunge movement. It sucked, yet everyone was duped by the record execs into thinking that it was great.
It's because of Death and Black Metal bands that the Heavy Metal genre is looked down upon and is practically non-existent. It's all because of this stupid BS such as the satanic gimicks, the ugly growling vocals, and the melody-less, 3 chord songs about necrophilia and murder that there is no good Metal anymore.
KetchBlaze
09-29-2004, 07:33 PM
Not entirely true. It's because of the birth of grunge and society being tired of the big hair, Tammy-Faye make up wearing happy music playing glam bands that real metal is dead.
Venom did not suck. No more or less than any other band. What we all fail to realize, when we get into these conversations, is that a band is great to it's fans. As far as the fans are concerned, anyone who doesnt like their band, can go suck off.
It's all a matter of opinion

Have you even listened to the new album they released back in May? It may change your view. I argued with Lord_Galvatron so much about them... he listened to the new album and from what I hear he likes it I guess... and he HATED Slipknot. Every single album of Slipknot's is different.

You just showed me and everybody here a classic example of the mainstream music scene. It fickle, BIG TIME! To them, music is a fashion. They only go for what’s hip and what’s in. And after awhile, when the new style becomes unfashionable, they throw it away and look for the next fad to come along. Later on, when they are asked about a past fad that they were into, they act like they weren’t into it and make fun of it.
This is the mainstream’s problem with Metal. To them it’s loose and free, so they take it and homogenize it so it can be fashionable and conform to the trends of today. This is not how Metal or music in general is suppose to be. It’s suppose to be free of the trappings of fashion and vanity. But there are more stupid people than there are smart people, so I guess this is the way it’s going to stay (At least in the mainstream.)

You are just a naysayer
Let's look at the bands who adapted their music
Let's look at bands who didn't
Let's look at bands that are still selling out stadiums
And then let's look at the ones who are barely selling out high school auditoriums...
Kowinkydink?
I think not.

Basing a bands music on their hair style is rediculous.
Michael Bolton had big hair...you don't see any Rat fans cheering him on?

We're not really basing it on their hairstyle. We're basing it on that point in time when they really rocked.

Wow. So much talk of all these bands that I grew up on back in the 70's and 80's. I feel old, now. :o A good place to check out info on bands, old and new, is Rock Detector (http://www.rockdetector.com) . They have history, album listings, and links between all of the different bands their members have played in so you can see how all these different people interacted. Another good site is All Music (http://www.allmusic.com), but Rock Detector is the better of the two. You can spend hours just reading about different bands and what they've done in the past and how they broke up and where the different members went, or what they're doing today. Lot's of fun.
So, admittedly, there is a difference between what one would call "Hard Rock" and "Metal". I thought I'd try to name some of my favorite bands from both genres, though there are some that bleed between the two or may bleed off into other genres like punk. This is how I'd classify them, anyway, Others might put these bands in different categories than I do, and that's cool.
Hard Rock:
AC/DC
Aerosmith
AFI
Alien Ant Farm (More punk than hard rock, but they still fit here, I think)
Bad Company
Bad English
Badlands
Baton Rouge (Just the "Shake Your Soul" album. The rest of their stuff sucks)
Black N' Blue (One of my favorites of all time)
Buckcherry
Bulletboys
Cinderella
The Datsuns (more punk than hard rock)
The Cult
Def Leppard
Disturbed
Dokken (another of my favorites)
Elf (another early Ronnie James Dio vehicle...very bluesy!)
Extreme
Fastway
Foreigner
Free
Giant
Guns N' Roses
Heart
House Of Lords
Jane's Addiction (crossed genres with punk)
Journey
Little Caesar
Living Colour
McAuley-Schenker Group
Michael Schenker Group
Motley Crue
Mr. Big
Offspring (Punk roots)
Queensryche (another favorite, especially Operation: Mindcrime & Empire)
Quiet Riot
Rainbow
Ratt
Red Hot Chili Peppers (They're punk, but I put 'em in here anyway)
Roxanne (one hit wonder with a great album)
Scorpions
Skid Row
Stone Sour
Tantric
Tesla
Thunder (great band!)
Van Halen
Velvet Revolver
Vinnie Vincent Invasion
The Von Bondies (another act that's probably more punk than hard rock)
Whitesnake
Y&T (very under appreciated band)
Tweeners:
Alice In Chains
Evanascence
Godsmack
Kingdom Come
Rage Against The Machine
Rammstein
Slipknot
Soundgarden
Metal:
Alcatrazz
Anthrax
Black Sabbath
Danzig
Deep Purple (another early metal act that later fell more in the hard rock category eventually)
Judas Priest (they started out metal, but the genre evolved on them and they wound up being more hard rock in the end, but I put them here because they're like the great grandaddies of metal)
Manowar (Manly metal! LOL!)
Megadeth
Metallica (Their early stuff was awesome. They suck, now)
Ozzy
Racer X
Samhain
Testament
Yngwie J. Malmsteen
So, there's some bands to check out on Rock Detector and maybe find some of their stuff to give a listen to. There's so much great music out there!
Cheers,
jag

Mine would have to be Manowar.
Speaking of which, I think we need more Power Metal Bands nowadays. We need more songs about bravery, courage, fighting for what's right. Not this "I'm so sad cause I don't have the same jeans as my friends" crap.

I agree, but I was just stating that NuMetal was pretty much dead because I ALWAYS pretty much hated NuMetal with exceptions along the way. Slipknot was never NuMetal IMO, they had a very different sound than any NuMetal band out there and that is why they have held up for this long.

Slipknot NOT nu-metal? When did that happen?
Korn sounds different than limp bizkit. Limp sounds different than system of a down. Soad sounds different than slipknot. That doesn't mean they aren't nu. Also, longevity is a lame excuse. Korn and limp have been around longer than slipknot.

Slipknot came out before "Nu-Metal" was even a term. So how can they be considered "Nu-Metal" when they came before it and they have now surpassed it? "Nu-Metal" is no longer a term used, I haven't heard it used in about two years, seriously.
Also, Slipknot has been around since 1995. Limp Bizkit's first record came out in '97 right? Korn has been around longer... but Limp Bizkit I don't believe has.

Slipknot came out before "Nu-Metal" was even a term. So how can they be considered "Nu-Metal" when they came before it and they have now surpassed it?Incorrect. Slipknot-june 1999. The term Nu-metal was coined in 1997. How can slipknot NOT be considered nu metal when they came after the term was coined and have yet to show anything outside the nu-metal box? "Nu-Metal" is no longer a term used, I haven't heard it used in about two years, seriously.Yes, nu-metal is still used.
Also, Slipknot has been around since 1995.You mean 1999, unless you mean their Nu-metal album mate, kill..etc which was released in 1996, 2 years AFTER korn.

Incorrect. Slipknot-june 1999.
1995... do more research, they have been a band since '95.
The term Nu-metal was coined in 1997.
Good, Slipknot was a band far before that.
How can slipknot NOT be considered nu metal when they came after the term was coined and have yet to show anything outside the nu-metal box?
Wtf are you talking about? All three of there albums have been completely different... they have been different everty single time, you are a moron to think they sound the same as any average "Nu-Metal" band to come along.
Yes, nu-metal is still used.
No, no it isn't... you are living at your parents house while I actually go to school and know exactly what people coin music as... and "Nu-Metal" has been gone for a while now. You must not go out very much, or talk to anyone in reality.
You mean 1999, unless you mean their Nu-metal album mate, kill..etc MFKR Nu-Metal? Wtf are you on? That albums was considered techno and even disco by some.... they did not even sound like metal in some songs. I highly suggest you listen to albums before you just label them as something they are not... and you probably never even listened to MFKR.
which was released in 1996,
MFKR was released in 1995... damn you are stupid.
2 years AFTER korn.
I never said they released ANYTHING before Korn, please read what I say next time. I said they were a band and released a record BEFORE Limp Bizkit.
Limp's first album in wide release: 1997
Slipknot's: 1999
No, Slipknot: 1995 release of MFKR.
