A couple of people suggested i should start up a thread for my manips here, so... ta-da! There are a lot of DAMN good pics in this forum tho, so i'm kinda nervous about posting my stuff now.

All of these are just plain old manips done using my crappy old Paint Shop Pro 5. No paintings or sketches like some of the other guys here. I'm trying to improve all the time and to get further away from pics that just look like manips. I wanna get to the point where my stuff looks more like paintings or actual comic art. Never gonna happen, but i can aspire.

There are a LOT of pictures, so i guess the best thing to do would be to post them in roughly the order i made them. If i can remember what that was. I apologise in advance to anyone who is already sick of seeing some of these from the Superman forum. I promise i'll put up some new stuff soon.

OK i think thats about all the finished ones i have at the moment. Except for the REALLY crap ones that i left out.

Here are one or two things that are in the works tho...

I'm trying to do a kinda 3 Ages Of Batman thing, with a classic "year one" type of Batman, then a Batman and Robin mid-career one, then either a Dark Knight Returns or Kingdom Come Batman-as-an-OAP one. Here is the first one. Yes he has a gun. Batman DID originally have guns, and i wanted some kind of visual device to show that he was darker and meaner at this point in his career. He is also more low-tech, hence the costume, which i tried to base on various Mike Mignola Batman pictures:

I'm also working on a Kingdom Come thing. I haven't decided yet if this is gonna be a set of seperate manips or if i'm gonna stick them all together in a group pic.

And that really is about it now. I'm also working on a couple of more Jennifer Connelly Wonder Woman pics (cos a guy can never have too many of those), one of which is her flying and is proving to be a total ****** to do.
I have a series of Bruce Campbell Superman movie posters to do as well, but to be honest i'm too lazy to finish anything. The reason i have so many things seemingly on the go at the same time is that i can't be arsed doing any of them. They just sit about on my PC and i do bits and pieces of them whenever. So don't expect those Kingdom Come pics anytime soon. :p

Anyways enough from me already. I'll post anything new as and when it gets done, but in the meantime what do you guys think?

I'm not a big fan of manips. I'm not very good at them myself, and most of the ones I've seen have been very poor.
These are some of the best I've seen yet. Pimpernel, you seem to rely on Photoshop effects a little too much, but your choice of actors is interesting.

One more thought: I don't think you should have posted them all at once. There are too many to look at.
You should be more selective with your choices - only post your best work (unless it's a WIP Thread).

I've NEVER used "erode" or "dilate" in ANY of my pictures. Also (as i pointed out already) i'm using a crappy old Paint Shop programme thats a few years old and it doesn't have a bunch of effects for me to use even if i wanted to.

Like i said, i'm not trying to make them look like photo-realistic manips. I'm deliberately trying to make them look more like paintings.

I know there are a helluva lot to look at and i'm sorry for that, but this is like a quarter of all the stuff i've done, so i already did cut out a LOT of stuff.

Like I said, they are some of the best I've seen. I've just looked through them again. Crispin Glover as the Joker is an interesting idea. Never before has the Clown Prince of Crime looked so melancholy. Very nice.

I'd say that you've gotten a good result at trying to approximate the look of a painting. Most of the effects you're using look good. The only thing I would advise you is to cool it with the lens flare. Using it a bit can enhance a pic but on other ocassions it can be distracting.

I know what you mean about the lens flare. I used it a lot in the early manips, but if you notice the last few i've been laying of it. :)

there was a pic on another thread of WW that I thought classed her up but ppl thought it didnt display her amazonian heritage (they like the old one??). However, THIS looks awesome resembles the original but looses the aweful cheese. Now she looks incredible and credible. I really like that striding pose and the muted palette, they really working together well.

totally aggree with Saph especially the Mr. Freeze. I like the Batgirl simplicity. what strikes me the most, is that the poses you chose really work. They arent the extremes found in comics but are still a pushing of reality. The bad guys display their villiany without become caricatures and the women retain that femine sex appeal without become manipulated Barbie doll (which fanboys lust after). there also something about the texture, its very painterly. I'm a total amateur with photoshop and find my colours are very plastic. Its great to see someone adept with their tools.

Hmmm... how about The Ventriliquist (Steve Buscemi is perfect), Poisen Ivy (not sure who, but it would be nice if you could get away from the whole slutty image and into a more natural feel) Killer Croc (Ron Pearlman, come on) Scarecrow, Robin, Ra's Al Ghul and Talia (ala Doom That Came to Gotham would be pretty damn sweet), Mr. Zsasz (I'll leave that one up to you), Mad Hatter... just some suggestions. These manips are beautiful. I would love to see a Batman movie in that kind of style.

Have you seen Buscemi in Ghost World? Besides, Macey can play meek, but he doesn't have the air of a schitsophrenic psycho. Robin Williams ala One Hour Photo could do it, but Buscemi is perfect.

In a movie i'd definately cast Perlman but for the picture it was just simpler to use Alligator Man for the head... i had to make the croc-skin shoulders and arms from scratch and those were hard enough to do... i figured i'd lose his facial features if i tried to do the same to Perlman's face. Same thing with Clayface... i ended up using a fake clay head instead of Clancy Brown. :(

Hmmm... lemme see... well i've got a bunch of stuff that i left out cos it was crap... and some alternate versions of stuff thats already here... and i have quite a few bits and pieces that aren't finished yet. Thats one of the things i'm wanting to do for the website but i keep deleting the various stages without thinking, or not saving things til they are half done. :rolleyes:

I only have a couple more Batman characters to do... Dick Grayson Robin, Ra's and Talia... then MAYBE Firefly, Alfred and Oracle. I might post them here or just save them for the website... if i can ever get the damn thing finished. Its a really basic tripod site so don't expect anything fancy... but i'm crap at that kinda stuff so its taking me a while to figure out the layout and the content and things like that.

I don't think i'd be able to. :(
Even to make a pin-up of a single character involves dozens of photographs and lots of different stuff. I'd need HUNDREDS to pull off a whole strip. And some things... such as the Phantasm's mask for instance... i scoured the internet for and only came up with one suitable picture... so with a strip he would always have to have that same face every time you see him and it'd look dumb. Same with Mr Freeze... i basically got lucky with him... the main body is 80% from one picture and if i had to do a strip i couldn't really reproduce him except in that one pose... tho i guess i could alter the arms and stuff.
I am trying to create my own wee world i guess... Batman set in the 40s... and i do have reasons behind all the stuff i do... i have my own takes on all the characters in my head and i thought about doing a bunch of bios on my site to explain my takes on each character... maybe i'll just write a fanscript or something? I know its not as good as doing a strip but its something at least. :(

Sites like Photobucket offer free hosting and allocate a user a set Bandwidth. Bandwidth is how much is downloaded - you could have one file on your account but if it's downloaded lots of times you will exceed the bandwidth.

My advice is buy some web space and host your own pictures. Or maybe register at deviantart and host your images there.

Thanks Kaz but i think i'm gonna leave it. I did try using guite a few different types of fishnets but in the end i stuck with those ones cos a) that whole body was a pretty accurate fit of BC's costume anyway and b) if i go more obvious with the fishnets she will look more like a hooker than she already does. Ridiculous bloody costume. :rolleyes:

Aye i have done a few in the past. I know all the stuff i'm doing at the moment is single character stuff but thats just cos i kinda got drawn into that. I wanted to do a series of batman character pinups and then a superman series. Since doing those i've gotten requests to do pinup series' for various other franchises or teams so i'm working my way through those at the moment. I will get to more varied stuff eventually but i want to finish the various series' that i'm working on first.

One glorious day i'll leave Superhero stuff behind all together and do horror and fantasy and all sorts of lovely things. :D

I'm not usually one to critique but I think the Johnny Depp as Dream could use a little less definition to the muscles.

Morpheus has almost always been shown as practically emaciated, with little muscle definition. Plus the chest in that picture seems a bit out of place considering how the head and legs look slightly out of focus yet the chest seems highly detailed.

I think that is a very well done Dream king. Johnny had always been my number one choice for that character but as he started getting on in years and losing the boyish side, I entertained a few other faces. Same thing with Winona Rider and Death.

I can't afford to buy bandwidth. Apart from some changes to the costume that whole body hasn't had any major work done to it. Thats the body as it was in the original photo. And Bellucci's head i took great care to match exactly to the size of the original head.

Aye... to be fair i think its the legs doing the damage... they seem kinda stumpy compared to the upper body and i think thats throwing off the proportions a wee bit. Plus she is leaning forward so that doesn't help. Dunno what i can with the legs tho without knocking it all outta whack. :(
