Pretty good but some of those movies are complete crap (i.e. Spawn, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil)

But you have some awesome ones (i.e. Aqua Teen, Terminator 2, etc)

I give you a 7/10

My friends and I have a thing for zombie movies, and Resident Evil would be the one my mainstream fellows could swallow, plus I thought it was decent.

Mortal Kombat was 5$ and I love the end fight.

Spawn was a gift my brother.

Now post your collections dammit.

J Bones I will give you a 9 out of 10.

I based my judgement on the following
Lots of movies from Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, and Kevin Smith.
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Evil Dead, and Lord of the Rings.
Transformers The Movie

Since you didn't have any of Superman 1 or 2 or even Batman Mask of the Phantasm I will have to deduct some points since you have many a comic book movie.

I live in a America.

Hollywood, the film capital of the world, is in America.

A movie being "not American" doesn't automatically make it good.

I bet you were jus waiting to say that to someone because you were so happy that you had... what was that term? Oh yeah.. "not American" movies.

Besides, my collection murders and violates yours:up:.

I bought that when it was on sale at Play.com for £17.99 I think it was... GREAT boxset with a beautiful book like booklet. One of my favourites for sure.

I've got a Question for anyone who owns the South Park season 1 to 4, are they worth it? I love the movie and used to enjoy when they came on tv but never followed it properly and since they are on sale now I find it hard not to buy them only problem is i'm trying not to spend money so I want them only if they are worth it.

8/10 a bit too ordinary though, all the usual choices, it needs a bit of indivuality if you ask me.

Well first off nearly all those movies are made after 1985, nothing wrong with that except your missing out on some great stuff for example where's the Hitchcock? Also no collection should go without the three classics, "Lawernce of Arabia", "Citizen Kane", and "Casablanca". This is just my opinion since this is a "Rate My Collection", I'm basing off my prefences. Anyway I like comments for my collection since I been trying to beef it up for a while :(

Strangers on a Train is a kick ass movie but not very film-noir, and I have yet to see hte Maltese Falcon :(

I might not have a lot of the modern classics(most of which I plan on buying anyway) but I have Casablanca, Lawerence of Arabia, Citien Kane, and quite a few older films that are just amazing.

Thanks for the replies!

NOFX, your DVD collection's looking pretty tight. I'd give it an 8 out of 10 (note a 5 is avg. in my book). Alot of the movies you have are great. If there were more genras in your collection I'd give you higher. You have a number of movies I've been thinking of checking out but haven't including the Godfather movies, American Psycho, Big Fish, and Schindlers List.

There aren't really that many movies in your collection that I can claim I've seen and totally disliked (a number I wouldn't buy though).
Some movies I'll acknowldedge that are well made and great (but I'm not a particular fan of) include:
-The First 2 Superman movies (too over the top)
-Star Wars: Episode 2 (not much depth)
-Signs (uggggh)
-Forrest Gump (Life isn't a box of Chocolats)
-Donnie Brasco (ok, this movie just didn't do it for me for some reason)

I agree with Wilhelm. Therefore, I'm not gonna post any collection. Maybe someday I will make a list, but just rest easy knowing I have better DVDs than you.

Carmine, I'm not gonna deny the greatness of a lot of those films, but man...incredibly ''safe'', and kinda boring for a place like this. It's like you bought every film that's popular here and only them. :o But like I said, lots ARE good...just be nice to see those 70 spread out some. Unless theyre actually your 70 favorite movies, in which case, I'd say "wow, you have incredibly popular taste." :o:o

Well, it's not like that.

For instance; I have the Long Good Friday, nobody knows that damn good movie here.

And I'm planning to get rid of some **** like Tombstone, Shanghai Noon and Knights..

So we meet again WarHammer...

Still no classics except for Animal House and Dr. Strangelove which I give major kudos for. Some cool asian cinema you have there, Oldboy and Ong Bak are both really cool.

I'm going bump it up to an 85/100 because you started to give it some flair, you know with the Kongs, Sandlot, Real Genius, Orgazmo, and also Battle Royale is a sweet film...

Recommendations: You seem to dig the cheezy horror might want check out Zombie a.k.a. Zombie 2 and Suspiria. For fantasy definately check out Adventures of the Baron Muchausen and Return to Oz.

Now my collection:
http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?cat=1&id=movies205

I might be missing some but that the gist of it... There are a lot of box sets so you might want check the title listings...

I don't don't know what to say, it's a great collection. 9/10. there's some stuff I don't dig, but it's very solid. Oh thanks for the recommendations. I saw return to oz and it was one weird movie. it wasn't too bad though.

I recommend it cuz you had Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter and Lord of hte Rings. There few good fantasy movies out there and most of the good ones are about kids... Ala Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Return to Oz. There some decent offerings such as Dragonslayer & Legend but nothing to the level of LotR. Out of curiousity which movies don't you dig?

i'm not too much of a fan of the blade series, clueless, daredevil(I don't like the character), freddy vs. jason, jason x (I pretty much only like the the 1st 2 friday the 13th movies), the new guy, resident evil, sleepaway camp(just couldn't get into it), spawn, beverly hills cop 1&2. those are the ones I just couldn't get into and there could be more but I didn't look really into depth, but those are the one's that caught my eye.. But it's your collection and you like what you like. I'm sure there are ones in my collection you don't like either. But you still have a great collection.

How's mirrormask by the way?

Blade 1 no longer holds meaning for me, it's not as cool as say 6 years ago, Blade 3 I bought to complete the series but I love Blade 2. Freddy Vs. Jason is the same thing, I loved it the first time I saw it but I can no longer even watch it, I just have it to round off the series. All of the F13 movies I just have because they were cheap and I use to like them a lot more. The New Guy and Resident Evil I bought a long time ago because they were on sale, I like the New Guy, REsident Evil is meh. Spawn was a gift and Sleepaway Camp was a blind buy. Sleepaway CAmp 1 is terrible, 2 is awesome, and 3 is rehash so it's pretty mediocre. Beverally Hills 1 and 2 though was awesome! :D Yeah there are some derelicts in my collection :(

Mirrormask is good if you like visual eye candy and your a fan of children's fantasy, it's a better version of the Labyrinth, though I don't think the visual perhaps aren't quite as cool as labyrinth because I'm partial to the awesome puppetry of Jim Henson Studio/Monster Workshop, but Jim Henson was a terrible director and the movie is really boring, so MirrorMask is cool but the characters and story isn't that deep.

It's an horrible visual experience. With Jim Henson, if you didn't care about the magical and wonderful story or characters, you could always be amazed by the slow pace of the movie and the grandiose visuals. The puppets in Labyrinth and Dark Crystal are wonders to look at. The way they move and interact with their surrounding will still be amazing to watch even in 50 years.

3D is mostly a fad. Mirrormask didn't understand that. Henson's company went into 3D, forgetting what distanced them from their competitions. The movie's really only a huge ugly bluescreen, with horrible 3D everywhere.

I can appreciate 3D when uses well, but in mirrormask ? It was sad. Sad for Henson's once great company.

Sigh

I disagree... Amazing visuals is great... It's half the battle but if the movie is boring, it means jack. Mirrormask I don't know it's charm is how blatant the 3d is, I thought it looked really cool. But I don't know I could definately see it being dated in 10 years perhaps, who knows... While your right those movies visually will never be outdated. But it simply didn't ride the fad because it wasn't trying to look polished or anything, it just was this really wacky and wierd world.

I might have posted it earlier last year. Not sure. Anyway, It's a pretty hard list to judge, especially for people here.

I'm a huge giant monster fan and a just as big one of animation. Not many people here are. In both category, I have mostly what is the peak of them. Sure, I miss some (there are so many gems out there), but who doesn't ?

I'm not as much into "classics" as most people here are. I usually don't care about them, and I do NOT see most of these movies as great as they do. Oscars means **** to me, and i'm sure i'm not the only one. A masterpiece like Angel's egg does not offer anything less than the godfather movies, or the Taxi drivers people rave about. I've seen most "american" classics, I've enjoyed some of them, but they sure aren't above the rest the world can offer.

And yes, i'm a kung fu and Hong Kong fanatic these days. If you like the genre, you'll understand how great some of the movies in my list are. ;)

(oh, and i've also got 30 movies of Stephen Chow which I haven't had the time to post yet. Most of them are great, especially his King of comedy and his wonderful two parts Chinese odyssey)

Btw, Movies205, i'd like to see your own list, pleaaase. ;)

I apologize I over-exaggerated but his pacing in Labyrinth is god-awful. And the only two other movies he's done is Dark Crystal and Muppet Caper, and I ahven't seen Muppet Caper in so long because it went out of print on DVD and I haven't picked up the new edition yet. And DC is co-directed by OZ. I love Henson, he's visionary, his visuals and puppets are amazing but I like him better in the producing chair. Like Muppet Movie which is awesome.

At least the movie created a sort of controversy (i.e. Henson going into 3D). It's already more than most movies these days.

I still went and saw it, even for my dislike of the technique used. I didn't like it, but i'm glad I saw it. I have great respect for the people behind the movie, and I had to see how they failed.

As for the story, Gaiman failed horribly. If people want to see a recent great twist on the Alice in wonderland story, watch Spirited away. Far more original, and pleasing to watch.

Gaiman, while great, is no Hayao Miyazaki when it comes to telling a children story.

I'm in total agreement with the last two paragraphs, and I agree I think Henson should stick with puppetry because it a dying breed and there puppets and animatronics are awesome just look at Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The movie is, to be honest, an interesting failure but for whatever reason I like it and I enjoy it more than Labyrinth.

Stephen Chow is the man. I been looking into in getting more of his movies. I only got kung fu hustle and shaolin soccer, which everyone pretty much has already.

A LOT of his movies are incredibly fun to watch, but few truly are masterpieces.

He has come to shine in recent years because of his fascinating skills in directing and writings. His shaolin soccer and Kung Fu hustle are easily to of his best movies, especially when put side by side with his earlier installments.

I'd recommend watching all of his movies (since i'm a fan), but if you want to begin with only a few, i'd recommend his King of comedy first. It's the movie he directed and wrote just before Shaolin soccer. It's one hell of a beautiful love story, with often very original humour in it. It's THE movie that showed he could bring something new, and that gave him the chance to reinvent himself. See it.

After that ? Watch his two part (which he didn't direct, I'd like to add) Chinese odyssey.

Crazy crazy stuff. I'd recommend you go on the internet and read a bit about the Monkey king story before, though. It's a great spin on it, but if you know nothing about it it might be quite confusing (but still highly enjoyable).

While crazy movies, I dare you not to be incredibly moved when you finally finish the second one. Beautiful movie to boost. See them.

You got a lot of Godzilla. I used to be a huge fan of Godzilla and I got most of the movies on vhs. How's Ichi the Killer?

Fun. Very fun. I was surprised. Miike is one hell of an interesting director. I'm not really a fan, i'll admit. I actually hated a lot of the movies he has done, but I've also enjoyed a lot of his.

One thing's for sure, he'll be remembered as the director with the most many great movies ever made. Why ? Simply because he is making so damn many. Even if he miss 2 out of 3, he still makes at least one great movie a year. In ten years he'll have more then 20 great movies under his belt.

Now that's impressive.

On the subject of Ichi the killer, like I said, it's fun. It's disturbing, of course. Often ugly to watch (even if there are far worse movies in that area. Watch "SALO O LE 120 GIORNATE DI SODOM" of Pier Paolo Pasolini. It is ten times more disturbing. Heck, the director got killed just after that BECAUSE of how disgusting it was. I'll tell you more about it if you want to know)

While disturbing, the movie felt nostalgic. It's hard to explain, but it's partly because of the music (or the lack of music sometimes, actually). Like I said, disturbing, but a lot of fun.

If you enjoy monster movie, you did well by watching GMK. It is the only truly great godzilla movies of the last 20 years. All of them are fun, but far from being anything above subpar. Final wars is atrocious, though. It's a must see, i'll give Kitamura that (he's the director of Versus, the great Aragami and Azumi), the movie's interesting, but after GMK, it feels like a disaster.

The gamera trilogy is directed by Kaneko, the guy who did GMK. Gamera's always been far more ridiculous than Godzilla. I love every of his old movies (I recommend them for the sheer fun you'll have watching them), but it's really REALLY hard to take the monster seriously.

By the third new gamera movie by Kaneko, you'll believe a giant turtle can fly and kick ass. It gets THAT good. If GMK was good, Gamera 3 is a masterpiece in the Kaiju genre.

I'm trying to start to watch more 50s horror/sci-fi at the moment though. I just watched Forbidden Planet and really dug it a lot. I'll probably rent Creature from the Black Lagoon, Blob, Fly, or The Day the Earth Stood Still next off netflix.

Big horror fan of the 50 and 60 myself. Especially of Ray Harryhausen.

Watch the beast from 20 000 fathoms. It's the movie that inspired Toho to make Godzilla. Such a great and fun Harryhausen movie (the FX genius behind Clash of titans and the old sinbad trilogy).

The black lagoon is one hell of a fun ride, highly recommended.

All great choices you named, see them all. ;)

I'm off, later guys.

(edit: do come in the Asian thread, I made critics and recommendation about movies. If you liked In the mood for love, I suggested some. Same with Kung fu and Stephen Chow. I usually come in and talk about any new asian movies i've seen when I have the time)

did you feel a change in yourself after seeing it? my cousin was completely disturbed by SALO. He wasn't the same for like 2 weeks.

It's hard to change me. Especially since I actually do like to film gross things in my films.

Love the muppets and Jim Henson, I mean I'll probably end up buying Labyrinth and watching it quite a few times, because I love the songs, the concept, and everything about it but the way it flows, it so slow. Are you a fan of Terry Gilliam?

I like Terry Gilliam. I'm not a huge fan, but I do value his work quite highly.

His monty python stuff, especially his Crimson Permanent Assurance short is a masterpiece. Such imagination in that 15 minutes, it's overwhelming. Everything about it is fabulous, especially the FX.

Heck, most of Gilliam's movies are wonderful FX wise. His Brazil is quite outstanding, and his Baron Munchausen is simply put a masterpiece (and still my favorite movie from him. There are very few live action movie as well done as this one. It's easily on par in beauty with the Dark Crystal, which is quite an achivement)

He's gone downhill, though, imo. His Twelve monkey was a nicely put together Sci-fi movie, far more intelligent than most others on the market. But I was quite saddened to see he left his inner child behind from that point. Fear and loathing is the closest junkie trip i'll ever have, i'll give him that. Great movie, but again I prefer his more children and comedy oriented movie.

More recently, I have no idea what to think. Of course, he's been unlucky. But that doesn't forgive his brother grimm. Intelligent ? Yes. But my god the FX are goddawful. Well, not always, but for a Terry Gilliam movie, it's intolerable. Disappointing, to say the least.

I saw at a festival last year his Tideland. Far better than Brother grimm. Very interesting little movie, but still far from his past accomplishments.

I've yet to see a Gilliam movie i've hated, though.

Audition was incredible (imo) though it had me slightly afraid of women. I watched it with one of my friends and his exact words when it over was "why the hell did you make me watch that...seriously it was f'd up...i'm afraid to go back home to my gf"....mind you it was his first experience with asian cinema and a Miike film maybe wasn't the best place to start...especially when you don't like gore.

i didn't read the whole thread...but i'll say this.... everyone should see Battle Royale....

Heh, why not.

Nearly only hollywood movies. Bleh, imo. There's missing variety in there. Sure, crouching tiger's in there, but that sure isn't enough. As far as American movies go, it's a very safe list, with the usual blockbusters (Mummy, lord of the rings, star wars, spider-man, etc) and the lighter movies (as good as it get, Jerry Maguire) and a bunch of geeks movies from bad to good (Alien vs predator and NO real alien movies ???? Geez...).

I'd give a 1.5 for that.

1 out of 10.

Alien vs Predator SUPER limited box set of Doom ??? Bloodrayne ??? Alone in the dark ? Amytiville's remake ? Dreamcatcher ? The american horribly bad Godzilla ? HOLLOW MAN 2 ??? The two Mortal kombat movies...

And a bunch of Van Damne movies, all recent release (they aren't even in there for nostalgic reasons...).

Yeah, 1 out of 10, personnally.

There's even the 3 Dracula 2000 movies. :(

Hitchcock box set ? Good. Two of them ? Twice as good!

No alien vs predator like the others two ? The alien box set instead ? You are aiming for my heart there, Movies205 ;)

A sweet batman collection, I like that. I mean, we are all geeks here, and this is quality.

A very american collection. Then again, we could say I have a very Hong Kong-Japan-Hollywood collection, so, I won't judge too much. Yet, more variety like Ultraman 2005 and Evangelion as far as countries go would help a lot, imo.

There's some Jim Henson love in there, and some great westerns. And Shaolin soccer helps a lot.

I'd give it a 7 out of then.

Speaking of Shaolin soccer, I just got half of the movies Stephen Chow played in (and saw nearly all of them) this year, and there's some incredible stuff in there.

I'd recommend his King of comedy (where he truly found himself as a director), which is one of the most beautiful and funny romantic comedy movie i've ever seen. And if you want epic, earth shattering and beautiful over the top movies, the two part chinese odyssey saga are an incredible experience.

Btw, don't rate people if you don't know these movies. I only try rating list I know how to respond.

Some kick ass stuff here... The Monster Legacy Sets, Chaplin, Godzilla GMK, Gremlins, Muppets, Stanley Kubrick, Kurosawa, and a lot of other things. Very heavy on the Asian Cinema which isn't bad but I need just a little more american where's the Hitchcock?!

9/10

Yeah it's not like I don't watch Foreign cinema, I do watch a bit of it like I've seen Kar Wai Wong and Chan-Wook Park, it's just it's not in stores regularly to buy :( Yeah I'll watch that I loved Kung-Fu Hustle or at least the second half of it

I haven't posted mine in a while.

Here's my updated one.

Small collection. Also very american. Seven Samurai is a great pick, though. I'd recommend Kurosawa's other samurai movies from that period, if you liked that one, like Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Rashomon and throne of blood.

You got some great geek choices in there, like the superman movies, x-men, transformers the movies, etc. But not enough choices and variety. It lacks a lot, imo. Robotech is kind of out of place in there.

I'd give it 5 out of 10.

There's a lot of stuff I also need to get, of course. :(

Hitchcock is a must...

Thx for the note, though. ;)

Great site to order, fast and low on shipping. Buying online is the best way for foreign movies. Do like me, download some of them, see which directors, actors, etc you like, and then begin ordering them.

That's how I work.

Or there's always Ebay. Lot's of bootlegs, though, be careful.

Yesasia is another great one. So is amazon, actually. Try looking at other amazon outside of .com from time to time.

Like the last unicorn, for exemple. The region 1 version is atrocious (fullscreen, VHS quality, horrible cover). I got myself both a bootleg and the region 1 version (of course, i didn't put my bootleg version in my collection) but i'd strongly recommend the version on amazon.uk, widescreen and remastered.

That's just an exemple, though. ;)

It's more of personal faves than an actual collection but thanks for the imput. I do plan on getting Hidden Fortress though.

Wow, you and me have different tastes. I like the Dracula series, last two were better than the first one. MK2...i got...just to complete my MK collection. AVP boxset...just for the two mini-busts...not the flick (I knew of the region 2 2-disc set at the time)

Van Damme has made some ok and good DTV flicks. Replicant, In Hell, and Wake of Detah deserved a theater release, more so than UniSol Return (alright b flick but Unisol 1 is a great flick)

Erz, you have a nice DVD collection. You have some good flicks and some nice DVD sets. I haven't seen any of the indiana jones flicks, but that is a nice dvd set of all the flicks.

I give it a....7/10. Kinda tough since I haven't seen every flick you have. I went by the flicks I've seen and liked and the type of DVD's you had. Director's cut, boxset ,etc.

I do have the first jurassic park. It is in Jurassic park. The lost world is in the lost world. Pretty simple.

Btw, it's always hard to rate a collection of movies you haven't seen. ;)

1.5
C'mon thats not fair. I know everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but dude 1.5 is pretty painful. And as for Alien movies yes I do have the 4 of them but on VHS, and am getting the DVD box set soon.

I stick with it, sorry. But like you said, these are all opinions anyway, so dont take it too seriously. ;)

Oh, thanks for the link on asian DVDS. I been looking for a good place to order. I can finally pick up Chinese Odyssey, which you recommended months ago, but I haven't been able to find it.
