that is a great post. one thing that i think both sides are missing that it's perfectly normal for two actors to play the same character at different points of their life. granted, stm solved that problem by overdubbing the younger guys voice with reeve's but they still used different actor's. welling is doing a great job showing clark growing up. routh is going to do a great job grown up (i kinda think it'd be cool if they used welling only for the smallville flashbacks. that would tie the two tellings together).

these manips are awesome btw....the more i see the more psyched i get for this movie...especially kazuya's. keep up the good work!:)

Hi Dan-el,

I am a 37 year old comic book fan. I am new to your website and I would like to comment on your editorial regarding the battle of two Supermen.
I have not read any of the forum messages but I am both a fan of Smallville as well as a collector of comics....Superman and X-men to name those relevant to your article.

I agree with your opinion that a fresh change from Smallville to Superman 5 should not be criticised or boycotted. I understand the appeal of an unknown in the title role and I was also delighted to hear Bryan Singer's name has been attached to the upcoming film. I loved Christopher Reeve's performance in the last generation of movies and I do eagerly await a new version complete with all the CG effects at WB's disposal.

Having said this, and in due respect to your article, I think you have overlooked some things about Smallville.

For me, Smallville's appeal has not only been the addition of good, well written, well acted new characters, but also the fresh honest updated talent that has been injected into the old characters. Clark, Lex of course, and Lana. The original movie only glossed over the formative years of which Smallville has beautifully examined. (I am aware of the time constraints of a 2 hour film versus a 24 episode per year series)

Lana, both in the Reeve film as well as in the comics has never been given any depth. Kreuk's role has progressed from year to year from that of "pretty but unobtainable object of desire" to "strong willed get-on-with-her-life" young woman.

Lex was little better than a James bond villain in the comics or semi-serious with nitwit sidekicks in the Reeve films. Rosenbaum via Smallville has really given this guy soul. You find yourself feeling sympathetic for him as well as route for him at times. You don't know how many times my wife and I have actually wanted Clark to reveal his secret with him so they could take on the world together! Again there is this progression from year to year as we see his brutal relationship with his father as well as the slow deterioration of his friendship with Clark.

Clark's intertwining "I feel responsible for all that has happened to Lex, Lana, and Smallville's freaks" themes has made their relationships all the more real and firmly embedded the basis on which Clark's "humanity" has been nurtured by his adopted parents. You really believe how an alien from another world could grow attached to the people of this world.

Superman stands for everyone on this planet....he is this world's greatest champion and he does not just stand for "the American way". Tom Welling has portrayed this humble beginning with class, honesty and credibility. Its hard not to like this guy! Once again there is a progression from "geeDad, how can I cope with trying to be normal" to "My- future- lies- ahead-of-me- and- I-will-make-the-decisions-and-thanks-to-your-wisdom-Dad,-I-think- you-should- trust-me."

The Reeve films and the Lois & Clark show never attained this kind of depth and development. Reeve's performance was outstanding....but lets face it, the material given to the supporting cast (with the exception of Lois maybe) was subpar. The Kents, Jimmy Olsen, and Perry White were well acted but ultimately they were real life interpretations of formulaic characters in the comic book pantheon. You watched them and thought, "yes...thats right...thats how they are supposed to be". No harm no foul. No depth or challenge either.

Smallville's character progression makes me question your reference to casting Welling as being "Smallville the Movie". Wouldn't it be exciting to see the ultimate progression that the cast of Smallville can make in "Superman 5"? Give Superman 5's creative team all the freedom they wish at presenting Superman in a post Superman 2 setting. They need not even refer to Smallville at all. The casting however would mean a continuity of sorts with a very popular TV show that I don't think would hurt one bit. WB had the opportunity to expand the scope of Smallville to Superman: the movie. It could have built on a solid foundation laid down by a terrific television show and quite possibly supplant Christopher Reeve as the definitive Superman. People who don't watch Smallville wouldn't care about this continuity.....with the exception of possibly generating more sales of the Smallville DVD releases.
I don't see how an unknown's casting in the title role is "better" than casting someone who is only well known...because he played a younger Clark Kent." That doesn't sound like negative "baggage" to me. Also, using Harry Potter as an example....the drastic change in the Prisoner of Azkaban's style and the "growing up" of the lead characters has not apparently hurt sales or the positive reviews of using the same cast within a new creative team.

Reeve's iconic portrayal of Superman is a testament to the writers/actors of Smallville 's ability to create their large following of fans. To this day, no one that I know of mentions Dean Cain when discussing "who played Clark Kent/Superman?" Tom Welling has made a large superpowered dent in Reeve's lock on Clark Kent however.

You mention in your article that Routh should be given a chance just as Reeve had.

Although Reeve was an unknown, he did not have to contend with a "current" (late 70's) and popular portrayal of the same character. Not so with Brandon Routh. Is it any wonder why fans may feel divided? Yes, Routh deserves a chance, but isn't a possible "drastic" change in portrayal of Clark Kent from that of Welling's current portrayal, potentially damaging to the public's acceptance of the character? Its certainly not Routh's fault, but when have 2 different actors portrayed the same iconic character within 12 months of eachother? The ony iconic character I can think of is 1983's Octopussy and Never Say Never Again, where Roger Moore and Sean Connery portrayed James Bond...only Moore, being the Bond du jour was far more successful than the following film with Connery. See the potential problem?

In summation, I agree with your opinion that Routh and Superman 5 should be given a chance. There is nothing wrong with a new face. I do however think that WB has missed a golden opportunity to bring the franchise to new heights. I believe that WB has made it more difficult for themselves to resell the franchise. Now the new movie will have to appease not only Reeve fans, but also Welling fans. A tall order indeed.

I strongly disagree with locarno. You're basically saying that Smallville TV series is better than Donner's Smallville (and STM overall) and Tom Welling is the best choice for Superman.

Hunter Rider
11-15-2004, 07:25 AM
I agree with both of you in parts,I think Welling was never gonna be superman so to bring him up is a moot point and Smallville while good is still pretty much Dawson's creek with special effects and not really a true superman product. However i do think Rosenbaum's Lex is the best live action version so far.

STM may have had formulaic characters and made you go "yes, that's right, that's how they're supposed to be", but the thing is, they actually do make you go "yes, that's right, that's how they're supposed to be". Smallville may offer depth, but at certain times the depth offered deviates from being faithful to the comics. The best example of this is Lana's character.

I hust realised something. In Smallvile (in STM) you are mad to feel like you are just an observer. Just watching this family go through some tragic and or hard events.

But come Metropolis you are mad to feel more like you are in the scenn, part of the movie. This is not a bad thing mind you. I'm not saying that you don't get into the movie in Smallville just that it has a different feel even in how it is observed by the audience. It was intentional for the film to be done with three distinctly different feels. One for each major location.

I strongly disagree with locarno. You're basically saying that Smallville TV series is better than Donner's Smallville (and STM overall) and Tom Welling is the best choice for Superman.
Um, while I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with my opinions, I do not think that I stated what you are claiming I did.

I agreed with many things posted by Dan-el but since "Great post Dan!" had already been written, I decided to concentrate on a counterpoint.

I stated that Smallville offers a far more in depth look at the characters/relationships and life of a young Clark Kent than STM's Smallville. I even acknowledged the limitations imposed by a 2 hour film versus a 24 episode/season TV show.

I debated Dan-el's claim that casting Smallville cast members would be creating "Smallville: the Movie" and suggested that a new creative team coupled with a natural growth in character development "could" result in an entirely new film that is quite far removed from Smallville. For Smallville fans, this solution would create a framework of an "instant" epic saga. Those who do not like or do not watch Smallville could simply watch the film on its own merits with its new creative team in Singer's capable hands. Lastly, I stated what I believe to be a potential problem in marketing a new actor for the role versus a "current" existing one. This, I believe is at the heart of the fanbase "split" that Dan-el's post was referring to.

I do not mind the casting of Brandon Routh as our hero and I really hope he is extremely successful at it. I have no intention of boycotting the new film or campaigning on behalf of Welling. (like that would make a difference! http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

With regard to STM, I loved Reeve's performance. I did not like Hackman/Beatty with Miss Teshmacher (sp?).
(A strong villain is crucial for Superman). I loved the epic tone and story, the Lois/Clark interplay and the effects. To claim that I think Smallville is better than STM is incorrect. Smallville has however reinjected life into a franchise that had been under Reeve's dominion since 1979.

Love the Photoshop artwork guys...keep it coming!

And I disagree. I don't want the movie to have any ties with Smallville besides the fact they're dealing with CK, and I think that continuation of Smallville on the big screen is limiting the options of Bryan Singer and co. Besides, many Superman fans really can't stand Smallville, and would be disappointed with that.

Of course, just my opinion. ;)

I LOVE Scott Bakula...from back in his Quantum Leap Days. Never really was a Trek fan. But, if he were to be considered for ANY role in this film, it should be Jonathan Kent, and not Jor-El. He's got more of that "I've been a farmer all my life" going on than he does that "I'm an alien who has to send my son off to another planet before mine gets destroyed" Kind of thing. But I guess I think that way cuz I never watched him on ST. Oh well...

He didn't say "looks" he said sounds.

Which by the way, WOW his voice is perfect. Even saying a line ment to be a bit more feminine and it still sounds perfect. Keep in mind I'm still not 100% sure about Routh yet. He is tall too, but even if he has bulked up a bit since then he is still a ways to go. THats not impossible though and I'm sure Singer will be insisting. They don't start untill March any ways.

That's a good idea actually. I've been trying to get back in shape for awhile now (I gained 30 pounds in one month not to long ago and have oly gone up since, I was working at Dominos Pizza, too much temptation [I'm 5'10 and 200 lbs, I was 150 when I started at dominos]) It may be sad, but to try to work on a similar time frame might just give me motivation enough to do it. I'll race Superman to fitness:D

Routh is deffinately cut there. But his torso is quite small. He looks tiny. I don't mean short. He is by no means short. But even in the W&G clip he is very skiny.

How much did he weigh then, and now? Don't doubt that he'll be bulked come March, but my is he ever thin in some of these pics.

In the pic of him and his sis it looks like he has huge shoulders.

By the way the clip of him on W&G showed that his pouty lower lip isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

No no nothing wrong. He was just skiny there. Alot of the chest and waist up shots on your site show him to be a lot thicker now.

Just noicing that he was very thin especially on W&G. He also seems to hunch over a bit in lot of pics, which will play great if the uses that for Clark.

I also noticed something after watching thw W&G clip. You can't see his eyes in it and I was thinking wow what you see of his face is PERFECT for Supes.

Then I made the now rather obvious conclusion that it is his eyes and eye brows that are what have me still holding only the slightest reserve. In the Holloween pics he looks very good too, but I also realised that the glassed really obscure his eyebrows. But they will also probably be trimed ever do dlieghtly to perfction come time the cameras start rolling.

God I can't wait to finally see the first pics from production. Damn March is to far off.

WEEE, cant see his eyes though and that's the last thing to convince me I think. the way His eyes and eye brows will look. The eyes are very key. I think in most of the pics so far he is too wide eyed. That's it and then I will have near no doubts.

It's not looking too promising...I can't even find copies of the episodes except for the Gilmore Girls "Concert Interruptus," but it NEEDS MORE SOURCES

Yeah, but we can talk about Reeve all day long. We know what he did. That's not the question. The question is what will Routh do. People automatically assume Routh can instantly gain 25 pounds simply because Reeve did it. Bodies are different, and respond different to training. Then again, Routh is going to need to gain even more weight than Reeve did, because while Reeve was skinny, he was still bigger and taller than Routh, and his legs looked bigger. We'll see sage, we'll see.
