I think I'm going to come out and say that the shirtless picture I found over at a Routh yahoo group is not Brandon. However, I don't think we will have to worry about Routh's size when shooting starts.
Yes we shall see. But judging from some of Routh's pic, it looks very very, plausible.
Bottom line if they can turn skinny...

Sage, you know better than to look for accurate info at IMDB. ;)

Currently, unless Routh already began to bulk way before the announcement was made, Welling has the bigger physique...for now. :)

If you look at any Smallville ep when Jonathan and Clark are standing next to each other, Tom is clearly taller than John.
Tom's IMDB profile says 6'2" and John's says 6'3"...
Even given he might be wearing heavier soled boots than JS, I'd say Tom is at least 6'3", if not taller.
Still, it's only a half inch or so, right? ;)

Mmm... yeah, maybe. That was one very short sentence in the W&G ep, and he was pushing his voice down...
He didn't sound all that great in that Gilmore Girls episode, his voice was higher pitched and kinda nasal if I remember correctly.
I did like him in the W&G ep, from what little was there to see, but I wasn't at all impressed with the Gilmore Girls ep.
He had four lines in that and was on screen longer, but the lighting stunk. He looked awful, but so did everyone else.
I thought, except for the shadow on his face caused by the hat, that he looked pretty damn good in that W&G ep. Kinda skinny, but broad shouldered and tall enough.
Sage, I'm sure you're right: he'll bulk up.
He better. ;)

It could be that they have been told from the MAN himself not to do something like that. Or being Iowans...they respect the whole "unknown" angle; and therefore don't want to let lose any photos they have of him.

It wasn't really the acting that was the problem, although I guess it was an aspect of it... His delivery was a bit on the dead side, which wasn't a problem in the Will & Grace ep, but his voice did sound different back then.
Maybe he's had some vocal training since...

IMDb gets much of its bio information from fans who submit it - highly reliable way to gain info if you ask me. ;)
Tom's at least 6'3" - after all, he only looks marginally shorter than Schneider in the indoor scenes, and Tom films those with sandals on! Watch season one; he's always taller than JS. Then watch season two onwards; he's around the same height. No coincidence.

Yes, because in season one he wore boots that made him taller than everyone, including JS, but from season two onwards he was told to wear sandals or just bare feet in any shots where they can get away with it. It knocks a couple of inches off his height. And even with bare feet, he's still about the same height as JS.
This is on one of the season two commentaries...

I'm actually curious as to whether Brandon Routh will try to disguise his voice as Clark Kent while adopting a deeper, natural tone for Superman (much like Christopher Reeve in the earlier films, and used a bit more emphatically by Bud Collyer in the old "Superman" cartoons from the 60's) -- or if he'll just go the route of Tim Daly and Dean Cain (a single tone used for both identities).
Personally, I'm hoping for something closer to the former. What about the rest of you?

Agreed.
I always thought it helped differentiate the two identities (aside from the obvious things like posture, the glasses, the suit and tie vs. the costume), so I'm hoping that Routh employs it in his performance. I'm glad he has a deep voice that he could use for Superman, but I'm hoping he can also lighten it up substantially for Clark Kent.

That's pretty much how I took it as well. But as a woman, I can definitely understand why triplet and other people would find it offensive. I don't think Sing meant any harm by it (and I did laugh as sage's reference in his own "argument" for Routh, which I reffered to), but it's probably best just to drop the entire thing.

I think I heard it from someone somewhere that people have made references to Routh/Cruise looking similar.
Which certainly can't be bad for Routh.
I would have to agree that there is resemblance, although in my opinion Routh's voice is deeper than Tom. (Cause' Cruise and I are on a first name basis or something, jeez).
:wolverine
I saw a lot of Tom Cruise in Routh's face in the press photo WB released with the formal casting announcement, and my dad couldn't get over the resemblance when he saw the pic. So yeah, I can see where they're coming from.

Routh a lot like Reeve
Information, please, about the new Superman, Brandon Routh. Is he a worthy successor to Christopher Reeve?
You'll have to wait for an answer to that question for another 18 months, when the first Superman movie in nearly 20 years will arrive in theaters. Not much is known about Routh, though it's already clear that his career bears an uncanny similarity to that of the late Reeve.
Reeve was 25 when he was cast as Superman, and so is Routh. Like Reeve, Routh was chosen over several better known names (Josh Hartnett, Ashton Kutcher and Jude Law were said to be interested), and like Reeve, he started in a soap (Reeve, Love of Life; Routh, One Life to Live). Also like Reeve, he will make his movie debut shortly before appearing in Superman. In Reeve's case it was a brief role in 1978's Gray Lady Down; Routh will be seen next April in a modest thriller, Deadly, which stars That '70s Show's Laura Prepon.

Actually, he did have some experience. He did a remarkable 6 episode arc as Amy's love interest in Judging Amy. It was originally slated for three eps but he was brought back for another three due to very positive fan response.
Nothing like acting at Juliard or on Broadway or several summers at the most respected Summer Rep theatre in the country (ahem... Routh upon closer exam probably isn't all that much like Reeve), but he did pretty well considering he hadn't really done much acting before JA.
Bottom line: every man that's played Superman has been either inexperienced or has had less experience. :oTrue.
That said: Not all of my doubts have been erased, he's not nearly as accomplished as Reeve was, but I'm won over by Singer's recent comments on Routh. He seems to be a natural. Anyway at this point, we're just going to have to take Singer's word for it. there's very little evidence either way so I think you have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Schooling isn't always necessary for someone to be a good actor.
Russell Crowe has never taken a single acting class. He didn't even actually graduate high school - he dropped out at 16 to pursue music and acting as a career, and busked on the street of Sidney for several years before getting his first big break on stage.
He was stellar from the get go with absolutely no training whatsoever. And he's one of the best, most natural actors out there.
I'm not saying Routh is anything like Crowe, who is a highly disciplined and an exacting perfectionist, but you can find diamonds in the rough almost anywhere if you know what you're looking for. And Singer did.

I did not know that about Russell Crowe. He's a pure natural actor. :eek:Yep... His best friend, Billy Dean Cochrane, went with him from from New Zealand to Sidney to start a careers there, they ended up busking (street performing, for those who don't know what that means) to make ends meet.
Him and Billy had been band mates back in New Zealand, in a band called the Romantix but the band was a bust. But they still play together some 20 + years later...
Crowe had often said he'd rather be singing than acting.
But I'm so glad his other career didn't work out. He's so much better at acting than singing, I've got all his bands CD's so I know. I do enjoy their music quite a bit, Billy is one hell of a lead guitar player, but I love Crowe's acting more.
They do give one hell of a good live show, however....

Newbee in the forum...pls. allow me to make an off the wall opinion-
Been a fan for over 20 years, including chronicling the ever growing inconsistencies of his storyline, some good some just confusing. Abilities etc.
It seems that Christopher Reeves is ever the defining embodiment of this character but doesn't seem to really look like the how the comics ever really drew him. This guy Routh is almost a carbon copy, but still short of looking like Reeves. Brendon Frazier actually looks alot closer to the original fifties square jawed version of the comic. (I'm not saying it should be him) I'm just saying they shouldn't try so hard to remake something that is constantly evolving.
Even regarding Lois Lane Why does she have to be stick thin? Margot Kidder was homely enough, no need to remake her. Let's try sexy this time around.
Sorry I wrote so much, but this is the place to write this so.......

And unless I'm mistaken, Reeves began acting in a day and age when "actors" didn't necessairly study acting. They just became actors, or were discovered, or what have you. You didn't need an extensive acting background to be an actor in 1945.

I'm kinda sick of that too.
Although I disagree about the talent aspect. Yes, Reeve was a more accomplished actor but I have very little idea of Routh's level of talent. However, Singer seems convinced he's extremely talented and that's about the best evidence right now that he can act his way outta a paper bag.
From what I've personally seen his performances are uneven: his turn in W&G was humorous and charismatic (if short) but his Gilmore Girls role and that soap stint were less than stellar. I would like to catch his Cold Case episode, however. Some said he did very well, while others have said they barely remembered him from that... I'd like to see for myself how he did.
Although a relative uknown to the wider world, Reeve was a truly accomplished actor before getting the STM role. The summer rep company he worked for from when he was a teen is probably the most respected in the country. Top broadway and hollywood talent work there. That's how he got his Equity card at 16. That is highly unusual, btw.
He worked on Broadway, off-Broadway and had a very successful stint on a soap while studying at Juliard.
Routh's resume is extremely flimsy in comparison.
Again, I'm not saying Routh isn't talented because of all this. That doesn't necessarily follow, he could be the greatest actor ever, but no one should diminish Reeve's accomplishments by saying that Routh is like him.
He clearly isn't, except in some very vague and superficial ways.

He clearly isn't, except in some very vague and superficial ways.My point wasn't that he didn't deserve to be cast but instead that he doesn't deserve to be compared favorably to Reeve in regards to their accomplishments.
I believe Hulk was basically saying the same thing.
Anyone saying they're the same in order to justify his being cast is being disengenous, if that person knows anything at all about Reeve's acting career prior to STM.

Hmm, if reporters keep on making parallels to Routh and Reeve, there must be some sort of comparison there. They may not come from the same acting background, but there's enough there to draw similiarities.
Edit: Superificial comparisons.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/sage1047/endargument.jpgI guess I should give up.. I'm not arguing the wisdom of casting Routh at all.
What I'm arguing is that he's being favorably compared to Reeve in terms of where they were in their acting careers before Supes and shouldn't be.
I've said this before: Routh is no Reeve.
Let me clarify I mean that in terms of their resumes, not in their talent. He could be the most talented guy out there...
Howver, it surprises me that so many people 'round here seem to worship the ground Reeve walked on and yet say Routh is like him when he clearly isn't. It seems disrespective of Reeve's accomplishments, which is why I'm bothered by it and wanted to argue my perspective on the issue.
To Batgirl: just because some reporter draws the same conclusions that others have doesn't make those conclusions correct, especially when those conclusions are based on incomplete data. That reporter clearly didn't research Reeve a whole lot prior to writing that report.
So I agree that while there are some points of comparison, those points are extremely superficial.
Whatever... I'm shouting into the wind here.

Yes. This is true and what I was basically arguing.
However, what many have said is that since they are a similar kind of unknown and Reeve worked out so well it follows that Routh's casting is a good idea.
Reeve's suitability for the part in the earlier Superman movies will absolutely not act as any kind of barometer with which to measure Routh's suitability for Singer's film, which is why I think most people seem to want to make this comparison.
Routh could be better than Reeve, I have no idea what he'll do until I see it for myself.
But to make the conclusion that just because Reeve looks like and is similar to Routh that Routh will be just as good as Reeve is astounding...

Um, those obsessing with the idea that Routh is a modern day equivalent to Reeves, you are running with something without knoying it all.
Those who are so against the compariso, well, the casting of Routh is what is VERY parallel to the casting of Reeve. Just because there are things that are different (they aren't the same person so they have to have differences) doesn't mean that there aren's similarities that warrent comparisson.
The role has been cast with a relatively unknown actor. That same actore seems to be destined to be surounded with big name actors *cough*to appease WB*cough*
The likes of Spacey haven't been confirmed but we do see that they seem to be going the same route is all.
STM-Superman cast as near complete unknown and surounded by big names to help carry movie; works out incredibly
SR- Superman cast as near complete unknown and Director persuing bigger names to surround him, performance yet to be seen.
This is all that we can compare I guess.
So what are we suppsed to be talking about??
