That would go as a good thing for when he portrays Clark. Let's also not forget what Bale looked like not too long befor shooting Batman Begins (ala The Machinist.)
If routh shows half that kind of dedication to preparing for the role then we are set.
Bale still looks scary as hell as a beanpole. Bad analogy there.
But no bother convincing the lemmings. Most of you just sound overjoyed that they may just have an actor. And a soap dope at that.
Doesn't add up...

Look I am not using Bale as benchmark for Sueprman, that is absurd considering Bale is not really Superman material. Its more of a "hold his own" type of situation, how well they could they play off each other. Much like I see it happening with Caviezel or Bana. Yea I haven't seen Routh in anything so I can't put much credence in my own statements. So this is only based on what I see.

As per my original statement, 1000 bucks HAPPILY paid to the MS centre if Jim Caviezel isn't cast as Supes on first day of principal photography. I don't see how this changes anything. It's just another rumour and, like I said, there's two publicity stunts prior to the final announcement according to chums at WB.
BTW, this is no argument with Harry at all. We get on very well and this whole thing is good-natured, as both he and I have stated at length. I love his site and he's a really good guy and fellow comic geek.
PPS Could someone do me a favour and post this at AICN in the appropriate thread?
This is what mark millar said on his site, kinda funny, maybe it is a publicity stunt?

As far as Routh is concerned, I can see it for sure just as much as with JC and Cavill. Singer is no dumby and has worked with many talented actors, this is going to be a great movie when all is said and done bottom line!
A soap dope? Didn't Reeve do soaps. And Welling...let's not go there. :o
Reeve went to Juliard. Welling's been playing young Clark for the past few years, and while I do think he'd make a decent Superman, I have some reservations as to how he'd do as grown-up Clark. Regardless, he's not going to be in this film.
WB's going to go with an inexperienced soap actor over Caviezel? Heh, I'm busting a gut over here...

Honestly if the guy is bulking up and they do the hair right and put the blue contacts in, he is superman. That being said I also believe that is the case with JC and Cavill. Who ever ends up wearing the cape is for sure going to do the best to not let the fans down including Singer!

batman in the comics and in the cartoons looks a lot meaner than superman.
remember that classic scene in the world finest (WB crossover) where supes puts his hand on bats shoulder and bats judo throws him across the room.
bats is SUPPOSED to look meaner than supes are his world is a lot more grim and his upbringing is a lot more dark.
if bale DOES looks more mean than BR quite frankly I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well Mirko checked with his sources and confirmed it too:
UPDATE!! - We checked with out own independent sources at WB and they confirmed that Brandon Routh is indeed cast as Superman. Our sources added that they don't know when Lois Lane will be cast. They also threw in tidbits that Superman writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris were recently spotted on the WB lot going through stacks and stacks of Superman comic books, so it appears that they are going back to the source material for inspiration. Our sources also confirmed that General Zod will be involved in some capacity. More to come!

Eh Marvel could do crossovers just as easily as DC, Elektra could do Wolverine ( literally ), Wolverine could show up in The Punisher as well. Anyway I know DC can do crossovers I just dont see it happening in the near future so why base casting movies on the fututre and not the now.

Things Routh needs:
1. Blue contacts (Not a big deal)
2. A new diet consisting of like 6 full meals a day lol.
3. A physical trainer that will beat his arse in the gym!
4. New photos that will make others believe he has the look.

This is great news, a superman movie finally on track with a proven director who is a huge fan of the first two donner movies which for all intents and purposes set a high benchmark for comic book movies! The movie when all said and done will blow people away I think with the aspect of story telling and special effects. I beleive it will set another benchmark for comic book movies and inspire alike. Perfect timing for a movie like this, it will probably be a huge tribute to C. Reeve as it should be in my opinion as he set the ideal for superman in most peoples eyes.

Contacts a problem? Not with soft contacts. Oh, and there's something called eye drops. If they shoot long hours, he can take them out when he's resting or whatever.

The funny thing is bringing back Zod and Luthor as the main villains makes a lot of sense considering the ending of Superman 2. In the Donner cut they are supposedly taken away by authorities because they had lost there powers. Luthor tried to help Zod by telling him of Luthors plan, so them teaming up again somehow could work.

IT is Batgirl....I can't remember if you were the one who posted way back on the superman-v forums, saying that routh was too ethnic/indian looking. I can't tell if you really like him for the role or you're just desperate for someone other than Caviezel. He was my favorite tho out of all the auditions they had, he looks like Chris Klein in the halloween pic.
offtopic: Bale would probably kick Caviezel's ass, all I gotta say is American Psycho. He's definitely more physically fit but Caviezel seems like he has this inner strength, more spiritually strong, he just gives off this vibe.
Also, I love Mark Millar too and I still hope he’s right. I just watched a bio on Chris reeve on msnbc. Routh and Reeve might have similar lives but there are just too many similarities in the way Caviezel and Reeve view the superman role and acting.

I believe that was me. Back then, I didn't realize that the pictures I were looking at were of Routh at 20. I do see the potential he has. His Halloween pictures have me convinced. And about the ethnic thing, I think that's due to his thick eyebrows, which can be easily cleaned up.

One thing they need to do with the role of luthor is cast a very well known and established actor. Luthor also needs to be a little more evil and sinister in my opinion. A lot of actors would own the luthor role. Luthor is not just look either, in the comics luthor had red hair for crying out loud! I think de niro could do something with the role as well as denzel. Daniel day would be cool though!

For some reason I think Robert de niro would also kick ass in the role. Always has your attention on screen. Heck luthor is basically the ultimate Mob boss in my opinion, do not cross him at all! Robert de niro is so versatile in acting, could also bring some suttle humor to the role as well. He would not be too expensive either and probably something he would consider as a challenge the way he takes certain roles.

I actually doubt more than ever we'll see Welling in the suite now. Having two people going around in a Superman costume would be quite the clash for media in general. Big screen obviously would get priority over small screen. I just don't see it happening. I knew we'd all see flying, and it happend..sorta...but I seriously doubt they will put Welling in the suite now that we have our Big Screen, Movie Blockbuster Superman cast. And it's about freaking time. I'm not sure who i want to see cast more, Lex or Lois...eh, just keep with continuity and bring Margot Kidder back with lots of make up and we'll be fine....LOL!

While i dont want to go off topic about it, cause it's big news we finally have our Superman.

I mean some people think Jennifer Aniston is beautiful i dont see it and some people think Angelina Jolie is ugly which stumps me, But the thing is it's a matter of personal choice, But honestly Rose Byrne is gorgeous and she can act much better than some choices i heard, If you dont belive me watch Two Hands or My Mother Frank she is so cute in those movies and really shines.
And dont worry i preach Rose Byrne for Lois Lane for a long time, until she gets casted, cause i remember Warner Bros were actually keen to sign her back when McG had his time and we all know who he wanted for Lois Beyonce.

While i dont want to go off topic about it, cause it's big news we finally have our Superman.
But hearing some people say Rose Byrne isn't gorgeous or beautiful is really *****ting me, She isn't knockout material or Over-top Hollywood beautiful but still beautiful.

Lots of speculation has been going around on the boards about the new Seth…do we need a new Seth? Was the current Seth treated fairly? What is the new Seth like? I watched the new Seth on Another World for a while and I did see him in that funny episode of Sex and the City. I’m sure he’ll do fine…that is unless he runs into the same brick wall as Brandon Routh did…bad writing! Like I have said before, I think some of these young actors are not given a decent chance because the material that is written for them is horrible and couldn’t even be well acted by Sir Laurence Olivier. I wish Brandon much success and a job where, if he’s got a lot of talent, they let it blossom.
Surprise...bad writing. Can't blame the actors for that.

I've set my TiVO to record it, I'm curious about this guy.
His look is good, but not great (blue contacts aren't always convincing) and he does look kinda skinny in some shots, but OK in others. Maybe he's bulked up a bit in later shots, and the leaner shots are from when he was younger.
Unfortunately, none of the photos anyone has found are recent. They are at least a year or so old. I wish he'd done something more recent so we can get a better look at him....
This might be an interesting side note: TiVO doesn't know this guy. I tried to set up an actor wishlist for him and his name wasn't even in the list of available actors... I had to his name in manually, but then nothing came up for him.

Routh can be a descent Superman, I guess. People were complaining that Welling is too young for the role, but this kid doesn't look much older. Whatever ..
I can see why MJZ thinks Routh looks somewhat Cuban. Thing is, many Cubans descend directly from white European Spaniards with little or no racial admixture (unlike typical Mexicans who have signifigant Indian blood) and Routh does have a certain Mediterrenean likeness about him. Mediterrenean types are more commonly found amongst Southern Italians, Greeks, Portuguese, Euro-Spaniards, Jews, etc.
No big deal.
A pretty, former soap star, former model, white boy from Iowa isn't exactly who I expected to play Superman, but hey .. I'M A BATMAN FAN and we've got BALE DAMN IT!!!!!!! =)
I think Welling would have done great on the big screen. Too bad he wasn't cast.

peter parker's eyes are hazel but TM eyes's are blue, didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. also isn't wellings eyes brown?
Welling's eyes are hazel, but with a hint of blue so sometimes they look green, sometimes they look blue and sometimes brown... Very interesting color, actually.

Singer has not yet done anything to strike a whole lot of confidence in me, and if he can't properly cast Superman, then I hope that he pulls a Brett Ratner and leaves. Yes, that's how little confidence I have in him at this point. I think he can make a good Superman film, which is a heckuvalot more that I could say about the other directors, but I don't see why we should settle for a good film when we can have a great one.
You can stop trying to pimp Smallville: The Movie (which would be "great" only to you) now. It's not going to happen, and only a tiny minority of people would even want it to start with. We've got a brand-new Superman and that's that. Deal with it.
And to Mr. Routh...congratulations. You've got one hell of a legacy to live up to, and so long as you respect that legacy and hold it dear to your heart, you WILL live up to it. Best wishes, and here's hoping you knock it out of the park.

It's funny....I've been reading back through a bunch of the posts here. People complaining with things like; he's too skinny, he's too young, he needs bulking up, he can't act, his hair isn't right, his eyes aren't right........exactly the same thing said about Christopher Reeve back in the day.
