oh wow.. Those are incredible. I love all of them. 'cept for the hat that the Riddler is wearing. Is he suposed to look like Gilligan?
I think that maybe the faces could be a little more than normal. The Penguin hardly has the look of anything 'cept a normal overweight balding guy. Its wonderfully drawn, but I don't see a whole lot of penguin look. Maybe a slightly pointier nose.
And I think the joker's smile could be exagerated a little more.
Then again you could keep them all the way they are and I'd still love looking at them. I'd love to see more stuff of yours DorkyFresh. Any of the other World's Finest rogues. Anything actually. Keep up the fantastic work. :up:b

Thanks for the advice and I would normally have drawn the characters the way you said (Penguin with a pointier nose, Joker with a wider grin) but with these sketches I was going for a very realistic style and concept. Ra's is loosely based on Liam Neeson. Joker's a mixture of Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth. Luthor is, of course, based on Kevin Spacey. Riddler is based on Sam Rockwell. Two-Face is based on Gerard Butler and Catwoman is based on Angelina Jolie. Of course, Batman and Superman are based on Bale and Routh. Penguin isn't based on anyone in particular...thought I kept thinking about DeVito while I drew him.
Thanks for the advice/comments guys. Greatly appreciated.

I assumed that was the look you were going for, but I wasn't sure. I'd like to see the more defined stuff, but either way, I could tell who they were without it, as well as who they were based off of. Once again, amazing work.

Freakin' sweet, dude. LOvin' it. I'd like to see more punches and such on the belt, or were you trying to streamline it? The gloves, like on the Begins suit, look too plain to me- I think they need detail, like the groves you put in the legs or such?
The detail on his face looks blurry and smudged? What happened? It's not that important, and I'm not complaining, usually you just put painstakingly clear and concise detail into your faces. Speaking of which, the studies of Supes and co on the preivious page...fanstastic.
SO cool, man. So, so cool.

They're all great, the only thing is you need to make Clark Kent look a little more dorkier.
I'm not into making Clark look like a dork. That was only in the movies...he was never dorky guy in the comics, he just wore glasses. If I were to draw Clark or direct a Superman movie....Clark would still be mild mannered, but he wouldn't be the accident prone/goofy guy from the movies.
Wasn't he a dork in Pre-Crisis, albeit one that was just pretending?
DorkyFresh
07-31-2005, 03:31 PM
Either way...I just don't like Clark being a big dork. He's not ultra smooth, cool, or hip by any means.....but he's not Peter Parker either. Clark Kent should be what Kal-El was brought up to act like by his Earth parents. Clark Kent shouldn't be an act...
...I'm not saying Superman should be an act either, but we all have different personalities within ourselves and act different ways in certain situations. When he's Superman...he should be free, outgoing, VERY friendly and always in a good mood because he's doing what he really likes doing (flying, helping people, etc). While he's Clark...he should be just like every other person...bills to pay, in a bad mood sometimes, not overly friendly (shy even), and stressed because it's back to reality.
But that's just the way I look at and imagine him...

Didn't your last paragraph just describe Parker for the last 30 years? And oh yeah, Dorky Clark predates Dorky Peter by about 20 years. ;)

Didn't your last paragraph just describe Parker for the last 30 years?
maybe for the last 30 years, but Parker started off as a nerd...
...Clark (at least as far as I know of) was never a geek in the comics until the movie came out.
Well Parker was a nerd-nerd for only a short period amount of time. After about the 4th year, that's when he became more social friendly, and he's been like that ever since.
As for dorky CK (one of 3 personalities at the time), like I said he's been like that in pre-crisis which lasted for about 40-50 years.

Dorks doesn't normally use reference...he did for the last Batman Begins contest but normally he doesn't. He asked me for help with this Superman pose. I drew him a sketch...he completely changed it around so as far as I know, there is no reference for this supes sketch.

thanks guys....my bro (nosebleed) drew me a sketch of how he thinks i should've drawn Supes which was a straightforward shot of Supes flying towards the camera but i thought it was a bit too boring so i changed the perspective. i didn't use anything to reference the body, but i DID use the picture of Routh where he's wearing just a black t-shirt and he's smirking a little. i used that as reference for his face...
spiderfan....i see what you're sayin' about the body lookin' fat...but that's what a body in that position looks like in that perspective. it's just that i haven't thrown the colors on there.....it should look a lot better once i do....but i agree, he kinda looks like he has a gutt right now.

ComicChick

you traced that better on the computer than i can trace something with pencil and paper. awesome!
too bad we're not buddies, i'd get you to do something like this for me lol
Duker Jay
01-12-2006, 09:47 PM
Traced or not...that's excellent.
And, by the way, just because it's traced doesn't mean it didn't take talent. You still have to consider things like line weight, choice of what lines to include.
For those of you up on your art history, you may recall that a lot of artists of the past (I can't remember exact dates off the top of my head) were using a little something called a camera obscura which basically projected a scene onto canvas which they also traced.
So, there you go...tracing isn't always the calling card of a complete hack...especially when it comes out looking like this one.
DorkyFresh
01-12-2006, 10:17 PM
thanks a lot duker jay....i didn't know about the whole camera obscuar thing. i really appreciate the comments fellas. i'm gonna be posting more stuff here within the next few days...so keep an eye out.
ComicChick
01-12-2006, 11:25 PM
i think it looks great, traced or not. tracing isn't an easy thing by any means, and i agree with duker jay about line weight and stuff.
i didnt know what a camera obscura was until you described it, then i kinda knew what you were talking about. it reminds me of this thing i had when i was little. its a blue piece of plastic that u stand up between a pic and a piece of paper and it reflects the image onto the paper so u can trace, only everything's inverted.
Duker Jay
01-12-2006, 11:40 PM
Well, I won't go into too much detail about camera obscuras because you can just look up information on the internet easily enough but, basically it's latin for Dark Room.
From what I've learned there are two main types of a camera obscura...one is a smaller desktop intrument and one can be an actual room.
If you've ever watched the movie "Girl with a Pear Earring" (which is about Johannes Vermeer) you see the desktop version in that.
In short, you set up a scene that is projected onto your paper or canvas and you trace it out to get your proportions and angles. It's also how they were able to get the intricate patterns and embroideries of clothes or elaborate chandeliers...or so it's been hypothesized.
Anyways...nice work, DF.

it depends on how good you are with a pencil and if you have a drawing tablet for your computer. VERY LITTLE photoshop is involved really....most of that is just figuring out what kind of technique to use, what kind of lines to make, and all that good stuff. i had fun with it because the style i used for the marilyn picture is a little different than the style i normally use...
...but yeah, most of the work from in that drawing is technique and not really photoshop work. it's almost like drawing on tracing paper....except the original image is much easier to see in photoshop...hehe.

sup dude, i think i remember you....phoenix_pae DOES look familiar. but yeah...backgrounds are a pain for me, hehe. i really SHOULD get used to doing backgrounds even if they're just sketches. my colors aren't really bangin' cuz i didn't put all my effort into it. i don't mean to brag, but i'm capable of much better. i don't know if you saw my batman begins contest entry (and i don't mean to be a show off or anything) but here...

Yeah . . . interesting subject . . . I forget the name of the book, but David Hockney wrote a book about all of the devices the Renaissance artists used, that were thought to not be invented until years later. It makes you feel a little better that the talent of the Renaissance wasn't completely incomprehensible . . . interesting book.

Your Phoenix looks too "homely" looking. She looks more like Anna Paquin's Rogue (she's not the most stunning looking girl). Should have made her more attractive in an intense sort of way. But great art as usual you lazy mufuh.

I was gonna mention before how she had both small boobs and a small ass. But I find it refreshing.
DorkyFresh

i don't think she has small boobs or ass though...i just don't make women look uber sexy if it's not one of the important things about the character. if it were someone like Catwoman or Vampirella i'd givem bigger boobs and ass.
but i do think i need to work on my poses because i really think i could've posed her better. i think that's part of the reason why i couldn't make her face prettier, because i'm not good at drawing faces at that particular angle.
so yeah.....need ta work on me poses...

you're not being honest....you're just being rude. both of those posts read as if they're disrespectful. you don't come to someone's thread, call their art "weak", tell them to practice, then say they haven't grown as an artist in the last 2 years. you even had the nerve to tell someone that you barely even know that they haven't studied anatomy. you have no right to tell him he's never studied anatomy just because you THINK my anatomy is "weak". i'm all up for constructive criticism, but those last 2 posts were pretty much trashing my work without giving me any advice or pointers other than "you should practice."
anyway, being that you're supposedly an expert in anatomy...i have a challenge for you. take my phoenix piece and sketch your corrections to her anatomy over my piece. that shouldn't be so hard should it? i can guarantee that you won't find many...other than her foot, which i've already admitted i had problems with.

In all honesty DJ Blaster, your work is no where near as good as dorkyfresh's. I looked at your deviantart page and the pencils that were actually yours had a slew of anatomy problems. Better hit those anatomy books.
And Dorky... I think that phoenix pic is pretty good but as other people have stated that foot looks awkward and youve already admitted to having troubles with drawing the face at that angle. It's ok.. i have trouble with that angle as well. From what i see though, the only things that bother me are her butt and hand. Her butt seems a bit TOO round..it's almost crescent shaped and looks artificial. Flatten the curve at the top of her butt just a little to give it a more natural shape. Her hand also looks a bit weird.. maybe a bit too much detail and the proportions seems just a little off at that angle... like it seems more claw like than hand like.
As for the foot.. yeah the angle is all wrong. Try drawing the foot in more of a profile view while showing just a sliver of the sole of her boot. This would give a much more natural looking foot with the proper angle at least that's how i see it.
i did a quick little thing in paint.. sorry i only hae paint right now and a mouse so it's difficult but i hope you can see what i did. but ill be getting a new computer and wacom soon woohoo.

oh yeah.. and generally the problem i have with drawing the face at that angle is making the mouth too big. I find if i make it just a little smaller despite what your brain tells you that it will look a little more natural. give it a try.

not really feeling this design dorky, especially the cape attachments. Reminds me of kirk alyn's or dean cain's pad like attachement. In all honesty i dont think anyone could successfully redesign superman's costume and make it work but people still continue trying. Superman without the red underwear just doesnt look like superman anymore. He just needs that red in that area.

Question is the top blue a different shade lighter blue? if so i like it.
The yellow piping is an interesting idea that i didn't like at first but the more i look the more i like.
The cape attach just seem to wide somehow maybe if it were just a little slimmer mabe with something to attach it to?

before i start...just letting ya'll know, i know how to take constructive criticism and i took notice of what you guys typed and i'm not saying i'm right or you guys are wrong, i'm just giving my reasons why i made the design the way i did. :)
not really feeling this design dorky, especially the cape attachments. Reminds me of kirk alyn's or dean cain's pad like attachement. In all honesty i dont think anyone could successfully redesign superman's costume and make it work but people still continue trying. Superman without the red underwear just doesnt look like superman anymore. He just needs that red in that area.
about the cape attachment...i didn't want something that looks like he just tucked it in. i love the way Donner's Superman has his cape attached, but i wanted something different...something that would convey Superman's SUPERness and that's when i remembered sketch of Kirk Alyn's Superman (you're exactly right, Wushuboy). the artist drew the cape attachment in such a way that it looked almost like a uniform and that's what i wanted Supes' costume to look like....a Kryptonian/alien uniform. i'll make another drawing, later, to show you what i mean.
i have to disagree about Superman without red underwear....there have been redesigns out there that get rid of the undies while still keeping the Superman LOOK. i don't think any design will ever replace the underwear, but i think Superman is still Superman if he forgets his undies.
I like that supes design but i think zolland is right needs a diff. 's' not the standard but not kingdom come either.
well...i'd thougth about doing a cross between a Kingdom Come \s/ and the original, but when i look at the original (even the hybrid Kingdom Come/original shield) it still looks TOO much like an "s" to me. i know it's a far stretch to think an alien could look and act exactly like us, but it's even further of a fetch that they have a character in their language that happens to look like an "s" as much as the current \S/ does. my brother was looking at one day and said something that stuck in my mind. the diamond shape with one diagonal line running through it looks much more like an alien character than the original shield does...and that's why i love the idea so much, because it still looks like an "S" while making it look more alien. i know a lot of people aren't gonna like it but i'm just giving you the reason why i made the "S" look like that.
Question is the top blue a different shade lighter blue? if so i like it.
thanks and yes, i did that on purpose. i tried making the colors more dramatic but in the end....the subtlety made it look better i think.
The yellow piping is an interesting idea that i didn't like at first but the more i look the more i like.

You should post this in the dc redesign thread really good!
the yellow piping was something that i had to struggle with. at first, i wasn't going to add it....but then i got to thinking about Supes' colors. i wanted Superman to look almost....royal. and red and blue alone didn't make him look much like royalty, plus...adding yellow makes him look that much more like Supes....so i added piping. admittedly it still didn't turn out as good as i'd hoped, but i think that's just because i didn't draw it right. i'll probably do another sketch. as for the cape attachment...see my reply to Wushuboy, hehe.
and i WILL post this is in the DC thread. thanks again, guys, for checkin' out my stuff (that didn't sound right, haha!)

Your profile says you're from Rhode Island and only 17 years old.
I highly HIGHLY doubt you've been going through college courses long enough to earn a PhD. That'd be four years of Bachelor studies, two years of masters studies, and however many years worth of classes for your Doctorate.
Not to mention the work on your site is 90% penciled by other people and colored by you. I can't find a single pencil work by you on your site.

You may or may not have a PhD in anatomy. I don;t really care at all because it doesnt mean a thing since it doesnt seem to have helped your drawing skills. I'd really like to see what kind of skills you've gained since 2004 because judging by your figure art on your deviantart site your grasp of drawing human anatomy isnt very good. Seems that PhD hasnt done much for you. Having a degree in anatomy means nothing if you can reproduce what you learned. Perhaps you should look up the definition of constructive criticism. If all artists could just figure out what was wrong with their drawings they wouldnt be asking for constructive criticism. Sometimes artists are blinded by their own stylistic mistakes.
So put up or shut up and lets see you post some of your OWN artwork and not just your colors over some othre artist's work.

...you're 17 and you have a deviantart gallery made of up of mediocre colors with drawings of characters with exaggerated proportions..and you have a doctorate in anatomy???
that's VERY hard to believe! tell you what...if you can prove that you do, i will put my foot in my mouth and apologize for doubting you...but that doesn't change you saying you did something you actually didn't.
