View Full Version : The Official Tom Welling Thread
Im going to say this only once. Tom Welling is such a beautiful man, that it perfectly suits the Perfect man. He is so good looking, it seems like the only possible explination is that he is an alien. Im completely straight. I dont care if you believe me. Not only is he good looking, he looks just like Superman.
I'm straight as well and I will say that his face does have feminine features which typically is what gets a lot of males considered "GQ" Thing is, Superman isn't supposed to look like an A&F model with bigger lips (angeline jolie like actually) and a j nose (which yes is a feminine feature). He should be a bit more of a rugged face and a straighter more masculine nose imo. I think that ended up being the difference look wise that puts Routh over Welling for Superman. Women may find themselves more attracted to the feminine features of Welling, but for the actual look of Superman Routh has more facial features that would work.

the only think i like about Rouths appearance as Superman is his big square chin. I understand where you are coming from JCDC, honestly. I just like the idea of superman being Angellic (sp?). It makes him look more trustworthy then the buiser look. IMO. Superman shouldnt look mean normally. Welling has the ability to look menecing, "feminine features" or not.

I don't understand where this feminine thing comes from, it just because of his lips?
I think the prominence of his lips could be partly due to make-up... they weren't as obvious when he was playing "Lionel" in Transference.
I swear sometimes they slather way too much lip gloss on his lips, but it must be a Vancouver make-up thing...
Jenson Ackles, who doesn't normally have very pink lips, has very pink lips in this show.
I so don't get the femine features comments. Plus from what I've seen of pictures Roth has bigger lips. Now Wellings nose isnt big enough that is the sillest backpeddling yet  . To me feminine features are small soft and rounded. Not angular and large.

Welling's nose goes in a J shape which indeed is a feminine quality, any art teacher can tell you that. Also he does have big pouty lips like that of Angeline Jolie which is quite feminine.

Im going to generalize here for a minute. I think guys know he is an attractive man, and to justify this, he must be femine looking. Guys tend to think that commenting on another guy being attractive will make them no look straight or something, I dunno. Alot of men have a hard time with that, just cuz a guy is attractive doesnt make him less manly. Its like your only manly if you have some scars and are a bit dirty looking. I dont get it. Ive been called a pretty boy before but does that make me look feminine? I dont think so. But I do have some scars now...

Routh's rather pretty as well. I don't need to post those god-awful pics from his site to prove that.
Nothing "rugged" about him either, or Welling for that matter. I wouldn't even consider Reeve that. John Schneider? Now that's "rugged."

JcDc, there's no point in being in this thread my friend. You won't get anywhere. :o
Well for what it's worth here is a better explanation of what I mean for those who don't get it.
Look at the nose, Welling has a slight curve that goes inward which is known as a "J" angle which is known as a more feminine nose. As for the lips, they are a bit pouty much like that of Angeline Jolie which also looks rather feminine imo.
In itself feminine features do generally appear more attractive. So while Tom is seen more attractive that Routh, it doesn't necessarily mean that being more "attractive" is a better look for Superman.
I think part of why Routh got the role in the looks dept is his facial features while not perfectly masculine, are rugged enough to pull off the face of Superman. Welling imo while having good looks, doesn't have the right kind of face for Superman's average facial features and a bit more rugged look.

Strictly on facial features though, Routh could be made to look more rugged due to proportions of his face than Welling for example could.

Welling's nose goes in a J shape which indeed is a feminine quality, any art teacher can tell you that.
Art teachers basically tell you that as a short-cut. If you can't draw particularly well - or even if you can - adding a "feminine" nose to a drawing is instantly going to give you an easier time when trying to draw a convincing woman. But the truth is that in REAL LIFE, there's no such thing. And any art teacher could tell you that too. I've spoken to enough of them over the past ten years myself...
Any plastic surgeon will tell you that men go for a more straight nose and women go for more of an inward J like featured nose because it's considered more feminine.
Anyways take a look at Routh
http://img8.exs.cx/img8/7452/coldcase107-73.jpg
He looks a bit more plain and has more average features to his face, probably not considered to most as really attractive... But the same was actually said about Reeve who's got similar type of features (no I'm not saying that means they look like twins either  ) Hell, look at the pics of the article when Reeve was announced. They called him "semi attractive" I believe :o
Welling may be more attractive but that's not necessarily an asset for the character of Superman.

I think you should share with the whole class whatever it is you smoke before posting in this forum. ;)
Full lips are generally sexy, male or female. You may find him attractive in a feminine way.. but most of the women (and maybe a few men) here would agree that his masculinity is not only sufficient, it's over and above. The whole male/female thing is subjective as hell anyway. All I can go with is how my staunchly heterosexual female self finds his look to be extremely sexy. Hearing what a truly nice guy he is and how devoted he is to his wife in interviews, is just frosting. Sexy is as sexy does.

He's not feminine, and I'm curious why you think women would find him attractive because of that...
Personally, men that look like women (there are some, Clay Aiken anyone?) don't do a thing for me. I think Keanu Reeves looks more feminine (softer, more rounded features) than TW.
He's got sharp angles in his face that would be scary on a woman, including his nose.
I took a lot of painting and drawing classes in school and I would have never pegged his nose as feminine either.
I wish they were photos I could find of him from Transference as Lionel, but he can be a bad ass too:

They gor for that because they're conditioned by society to follow stereotypes - stereotypes that continue to be perpetuated by all and sundry, including yourself.
Being a stereotype doesn't make something right.
Put Tom's nose on a woman, and you end up with Sarah Jessica Parker - a woman who is undoubtedly beautiful, but hardly has what you'd call really feminine features.

You're being very selective in your use of images... Those are from his modeling days (from about 5 years ago) and in the top one his lips were even emphasized using some sort of digital manipulation... Not good examples to prove your point.
Also, his lips are hardly carbon copies of Angelina Jolie's...

Oh I dunno about that. Routh's got a heavier chin, yes, but he's also got rather thin features. Welling's got some real beefy jaw muscles, in the same vain as Pitt and Redford. Although I can understand why his nose and lips are perceived as a "weakness," as they may appear a tad feminine.
When it comes down to it, none of these guys have the classic Superman look. Reeve didn't necessarily either. To my mind, the "classic" look would either be a blue-eyed Dean Cain or a Bill Campbell (Rocketeer). And keep in mind I'm a red-blooded heterosexual male, but I think one of Welling's advantages is that his look gives him a rather angelic quality that'd work really well--something different for this day and age.
I'll admit that the latest Routh press photos are far better than the ones on his site, but to my mind, he still looks like a common fratboy or something. Very Keanu. They're going to have to do a hell of a makeover to convince me.
IMO, it's all in the eyes, and this is where Routh really misses the mark. I guess we'll see if the contacts work. Bottomline, there has to be something that looks different about Superman's face. I find something really alien about Welling and Caviezel. Not the type of folks you'd see walking down on the street everyday. Routh just looks average to me. My opinion of course.
Not only Schneider, but JC as well.
Just rub it in now :( :D.
Yeah, Jim's combination of "scruffiness" with those freaky blue eyes made him the ideal choice for Superman imo. Just like Jim Lee's rendition, which is my favorite. Oh well.

Maybe JcDc can explain this j-shaped nose again... I'm not sure what he's talking about. My son's nose is like TW's, I just don't see it as feminine at all.
Also: In all the drawing and painting classes I've taken, they've never once talked about feminine vs. masculine features... The profs just wanted us to try and render the person as closely as we could.
But usually, we did nudes... not too many portraits, except for self-portraits.

TW is on the cover of the latest issue of Dreamwatch. DTS excerpted a quote from his interview. Regarding fan mail:
"I do get a lot -- from guys and girls. We actually get more guys watching than we do girls, which the producers didn’t think was going to happen when we started the show. Our male audience is larger than they expected. I haven’t had anything too outrageous yet. I think the character that I play is warm and approachable and nice and kind. I think that maybe the fans that Clark attracts tend to be on the safe side, rather than, say, Lex Luthor. I think Michael Rosenbaum’s fan mail must be a little different (laughs)."

I see where you are coming from, I guess the lines get blurred on what makes him Clark Kent as the average geeky farmboy and also the look of a man that has something different about him which translates to Superman. Caviezel for example, I could see where he'd have that rugged Superman face of determination. That's what I've never seen in Welling which may very well be be the difference of having a more masculine face than feminine one.

Well one thing I was told when I started in comics was when drawing a woman, the softer lines the better, and use less lines then a guy. Now If I were to draw welling, I gaurentee the drawing would look very angular, he has to sharp of features to pass as a woman, big brow, sharp jawline, just a very structured face in general. Nobody ever said "draw a J shaped nose for women" Thats just silly. If you want a guy to look gruff and tough, yeah, give him a roman hook nose of something, but giving him a J shaped nose doesnt mean squat. Ok, he has big lips, so does the Hulk and Apocolypes. Nobody has ever said they looked like chics ;)

Brandon Routh has an average handsome look, but he doesn't make you stop in mid walk and say "DAYUMM!" As for comparing features, if you want to label Tom Welling as having feminine features, go for it. Whatever you want to label them as, there is no denying that he is simply amazing to behold. Oh, OK.... I see what you're talking about but I still don't see why that's feminine.
My art profs never talked about anything like that being typically feminine or masculine.
Although I never really did a lot of portraits, one of my profs did it professionally (he did pastel paintings and they reminded me of John Singer Sargent's work, he was excellent and did comissions for politicians and society folks) and he never even mentioned anything like that being masculine vs. feminine.
He was on a how different plane of existance, however. He would always play music during class and it would vary from Devo to Tchaikovsky to REM to Art of Noise. (I'm dating myself, I think...) He even made his own pastels.
If I had been an art major, I was a film major that made art - drawing/painting/art history/writing/theatre - an emphasis, I would have learned how to make my own paints and pastels. Which would have been cool, more control over the color when you make them yourself I'm thinking.
Anyway, I digress big time.
To restate: I don't see how that is feminine.

Which is not what you would want for Superman. For a model, yes. Btw Routh I'm sure can make an angry face like anyone else but we don't have screen caps from countless episodes to post :o

Is there something you've read that indicated a backlash against Reeve's casting in the 70's?

This thread is hysterical. I was wondering how long it would be before other Superman candidates were brought up for comparisons. Again! The official announcement of Routh was made weeks ago, yet the casting wars continue. Heh!
I SERIOUSLY hope Warners is paying attention.
Carry on folks; it's entertaining. :D

Than any of the Welling pics he posted :o
I totally disagree, but I think it's pointless to agrue further. You're not going to convince me and probably a lot of people on this thread.
In a way I can kinda see what you mean in regards to Routh, but for me you lose any footing you may have gained when you claim he's more suitable for the part than Welling looks wise.
It's not just 'cause I'm a TW fan, I am and I will grant that has probably biased me to some extent, but because he's just so average compared to Welling. You said so yourself, I believe, a few posts back.
Yeah, I guess he's handsome enough but he doesn't have that little extra something about him that Superman should have. A magnetism, a presence, that I feel TW has in spades.
Granted again: it could be there, since I've only seen a very few photos of Routh, but right now I don't see it.
But this is the whole reason why I'm now very lukewarm on the project: I'm not crazy about Routh for Superman. He just isn't close enough in look for me to what Superman should look like.
He looks more like Dean Cain than Chris Reeve anyway, IMO. His coloring is more like Reeve's but he lacks Reeve's sharply defined features. His nose is more rounded and his cheekbones don't have the same definition.
He's got a great chin and jawline for Supes, and that's probably the most Superman like quality he has. The cleft chin and the squareness of his jaw work well for that, but for me everything comes back to his eyes: They're just too dark.
I know that they'll use contacts or paint them blue using CG, or use some combination of both, but I just don't know how realistic that will look.
With Welling and JC, at least, even if their eyes aren't the sky blue you'd like to see with Supes, their eyes are a lot lighter and would have taken a lot less work to adjust the color to suit.
In a practical matter, having Routh wear heavy blue contacts for long periods filming an action movie will be difficult.
The color will have to be more opaque to cover up the brown in his eyes, TW and JC would have had a more transparent color in their contacts (had they even been necessary), and it would probably obscure part of his vision. That will be very hard on him and, I'm no expert on this, but I would think it might even compromise his safety.
Goofy Clark Kent!

Still looks like an A&F model. His look is not average enough for a distinction in the identities. With Routh he should be able to look dynamic as Supes http://tinypic.com/dw3kx

I forgive you for missing that I was making a joke - it wasn't supposed to be a good Clark Kent manip. I actually made that manip over a year ago because a friend and I simply wanted to see Tom in glasses. I reiterate: TOM in glasses, not Tom as Clark. My friend did sexy Tom, I did goofy Tom...

Daniel Radcliffe has brilliant blue eyes and TPTB originally tried contacts to turn his eyes Harry Potter green, but he couldn't tolerate contacts for some reason. Then they tried to CG his eyes green and it didn't look realistic so they gave up.
That's how we got a blue-eyed Harry Potter.

HYSTERICAL! I've never seen that before, thanks Pat. :)No prob. That drawing was on the cover of Mad Magazine about two years ago. I thought about it yesterday when folks were talking about how to draw Welling. His face is quite angular with very sharp features - and as with the rest of him, looks like it was carved. ...From granite. ;)
Thanks... I made the mistake of going over to the Superman thread just now and ranted my head off.I hesitate to ask... which thread?
It's ironic that I always felt this picture of Tom was better than the one Alex Ross did for TV Guide...I like both, but they're very different styles and drawn to elicit different emotions. The Mad Magazine piece is very caricature-ish and humorous. Nevertheless, the artist nailed Welling's cheeks and protruding jaw. It's overemphasized to the max, but still conveys Welling's facial lines to a tee. I think Ross tried to capture a more accurate depiction of Welling's features, but his style is such that it's not... oh, I dunno, not quite right. Both drawings are CLEARLY Welling though - or more specifically, SV's CK.
But Tom can be drawn with soft lines too, it just depends on the drawing style...Great minds...
Why are we debating Routh versus Welling in the Smallville thread? ... Welling wins hands down, and it isn't even close. Indeed! Routh will need a LOT more than just a muscular frame and good direction to even come close to the appeal Welling exudes in and out of character naturally. JMHO.

It made me angry that again someone said Wellingites are not real Superman fans. Whatever that is supposed to mean.
Give me a ****ing break. I've been a fan of Superman since before Tom Welling was even a gleam in his daddy's eye. I don't need some teen fanboy telling me what I am or am not...
I think what makes me most angry is the implication that somehow Welling supporters aren't as good as the rest of the Superman fandom. That's patently ridiculous.

I dunno, I didn't think Ross nailed Welling, Kreuk or Rosenbaum on the TV Guide covers. He's technically brilliant of course, but his drawings of real people have something missing. He can't quite capture the glint in the eyes and other little things like that.
Anyway, I guess I can't talk about a drawing i've done and NOT post it...
I'm fairly happy with it considering that i've had a trapped nerve in one arm for the past three years - drawing with the use of only one hand isn't so easy. ;) This one was done about 18 months ago...

It's post #176....

So what if I, and other people, have doubts? That doesn't make us any less Superman fans than the people who don't have those doubts...Hm. Well, I think one of the biggest problems here is that people (all of us) tend to assume too much. I wish I had a dime for every time somebody said the only reason they didn't want Welling was because if he were cast, the film would end up being Smallville: The Movie. http://www.patcostello.com/temp/rolleyes.gif
The accusations that SV fans aren't true Superman fans, or worse - real Superman fans don't watch SV - is patently RIDICULOUS, not to mention insulting. I'm 40 y.o. and have been a Superman fan as far back as I can remember. I grew up with George Reeves on the tube, and comic books strewn across my bedroom floor. (I had a messy room.) I had a crush on Chris Reeve in 7th grade, and watched all of the TV shows (Superboy, L&C, etc.), but it wasn't until SV that I really found myself actually *relating* to the character. That's pretty tough to do - considering Superman is an alien with some extremely far-fetched abilities.
Furthermore, some people have suggested that if Clark Kent was played by a different actor, SV fans would all be pushing for him. Eh. Not necessarily. I never, EVER, wanted to see Dean Cain graduate up to a film version. He never inspired any sense of awe or fascination with me. In a word, I never believed he was Superman - just an actor hired to play the role. Much like Routh. *sigh*
Which brings me to my next point on the assumption train. I see a lot of posts from people that suggest Routh must be good because he won the role over all those who participated in the global casting call. Poppycock. According to S-V, Routh didn't even HAVE to screen test for Singer. Singer may have used Routh's prior screen test(s) from the McG era, but that doth not a fair comparison make, IMHO. It's not accurate to say Routh beat out the competition because McG's screens tests were not the same as Singer's. And besides the fact that the casting call was a legal requirement and was going to happen anyway, Singer's true choice was (apparently) shot down by Warners. Routh is NOT Singer's "perfect unknown." That person had no acting experience whatsoever, and was described as being a perfect cross between Reeve and the comics in looks.
It's all water under the bridge of course. I'm fairly convinced Routh was just a compromise. Something happened with Welling and Singer lost him. Warner's wouldn't agree to Singer's "perfect unknown" found in the casting call, and Singer wouldn't accept Warner's safety net, Caviezel. Enter Routh. Meh. How that translates into something we "should" be excited about is beyond me.
I'm excited to see a new Superman film, but Routh doesn't inspire confidence in me on any level. Heck, I don't even find him attractive. His acting history (what little there is) is spotty at best, and some of those manips (using the same three freakin' head shots, complete with bloodshot eyes) are scary. At least Caviezel (gulp!) had the requisite acting skillz, and Singer's perfect unknown might have had a better look. Bottom line: When weighing all pros and cons equally, Welling was the best choice overall. And many of us already see him as Superman. Imagine that?
Ack! Piss, moan, grumble and groan. It all means squat. I think there's a better chance of seeing hell freeze over than Welling playing Superman on the silver screen.
...Then again, the Red Sox DID win the World Series. I guess anything is possible.

That probably has something to do with seeing him weekly and being somewhat "attached" to the guy, if you catch my drift. ;)
This will probably get muted too, but Reeve wasn't exactly Donner's first choice either. The casting director kept putting Reeve's picture on the top of the pile, the pic kept getting moved to the bottom. Finally Donner took a lookat him, and the rest is history.
But I do understand your worry about his experience.

I thought Donner kept putting it at the top of the pile and the salkinds kept putting it back at the bottom. I could be wrong, but thats what i thought.
Nah, look at the STM: SE. The casting director kept putting Reeve' s picture on the top and it kept getting shuffled to the bottom. Finally, Donner decided to test him.

Okay, here's another. Gotta love the lighting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/sage1047/welling11.jpg
I love the lighting in Smallville.
My hubby is a theatrical lighting designer and I was a film major in college, so I'm very aware of that kind of thing.
They always have such wonderful lighting...
My hubby, oddly, however doesn't like lighting that is too theatrical on TV. He absolutely hates the lighting on the West Wing and I can't even get him to watch Smallville at all but he'd probably hate it too.
He wants TV to have a realistic look and use practical instruments more... ::sigh::
I think he'd like Smallville if he gave it a chance but me and the kids watch it, so I still got my SV buddies at home. ;)

LOL.. I have to admit, I thought the same thing today.. (re: President and Superman). I was happy to have the Senator I wanted elected (Obama 2008 ;)) and a very important local referendum passed. Just like with the Superman decison, I'm gritting my teeth and hoping for the best.
BTW if anyone wants the magazine pick it up when it's out I had to order the first issue off of Ebay after even trying to call freak'n England. You guys in England I'm glad this is typed because I can't understand anyone I must be stupid and deaf.
Do you mean the new Smallville Magazine? If so, I found mine at Borders. I need to stop in there and pick up the second issue sometime soon. Or maybe you mean the Dreamwatch issue with TW on the cover.. in which case, I have also seen those at Borders and B&N (I think).

I heard Singer offered the role first to Dougray Scott. We know what happened there. :DI'm not sure I even want to admit this on a superhero message board, but I never even had HEARD of X-Men until the film was playing in theaters. I had no clue. Yeah, I know I said I had comic books strewn across my floor as a kid. But they were ALL Superman comics. LOL For X-Men, who was cast or not cast - as the case might be - was totally moot to me. Hell, Danny DiVito could have played Wolverine and I would heve been like, okay. Kinda short - but maybe he's *supposed* to be short. [wink wink]
That probably has something to do with seeing him weeklyNo doubt. How amazing would it be to have gone to high school with Clark Kent?
Wait, I did!!!
I spent four years with the guy. I even know his parents. They're pretty cool. Mom makes great apple pies, and father is a little stubborn, but he's a great dad. Clark is afraid of heights and hates peas. He likes flannel, but blue looks best on him. He likes to play hoops and football. He has a passion for astronomy, and a fascination with Native American cave paintings and lore. His first words were his birth mother's name, Lara. His friends are loyal, if not a bit nosey at times. Clark has a secret, but he'd be horrified to know how many people actually know it. Geeze, even *I* know. Poor guy. Somebody should just tell him to relax 'cause everything is gonna work out peachy. Then again, it's not the destination that's important, it's the journey that counts...
*sigh* Is any of this sinking in yet? Like I previously said, I used to watch L&C too, but I never wanted Dean Cain to play Superman in a film. He was just another actor to don the suit.
...and being somewhat "attached" to the guy, if you catch my drift. ;)Heh. As if physical attractiveness doesn't influence most of the guys posting about who they feel should play Lois?
See, THIS is a perfect example of where somebody's opinion is valued less because they're labeled biased. I know this is gonna make some folks here cringe, but fanboys need to wake up to the fact that Superman appeals to more than just a male audience. And when it comes to entertainment, men aren't very different than woman: sex appeal IS important.
Reeve wasn't exactly Donner's first choice either. The casting director kept putting Reeve's picture on the top of the pile, the pic kept getting moved to the bottom. Finally Donner took a look at him, and the rest is history.I would be interested to find out WHY the photo was shuffled so much. What was it about Reeve that turned Donner off at first?
But I do understand your worry about his experience.Well, that's one hurdle cleared, I guess.
