Hey Pat, you ever been to Germany during the summer?

I hear a certain Mr. W is bigger than Hasselhoff there... ;)

Hey Pat, you ever been to Germany during the summer? No, but I wouldn't mind visiting someday. My father was stationed there as an MP there during the Korean War. I think Squatlow does a lot of business in Germany. I'd be interested to hear what his take is on the show's popularity there since he spends a lot of time on both continents.

I hear a certain Mr. W is bigger than Hasselhoff there...Hee! I don't know if that's good or bad. I never understood the popularity of Hasselhoff, but then I never watched Babewatch either; I only know him from Knight Rider, and that was eons ago. He's in his 50's now, if I'm not mistaken (not that that's "old" or anything. :p )

There was a story I once read about Welling in Italy. Not sure how accurate it is - maybe James can fill in the blanks or debunk the story if it is heretical, but it happened a few years ago. Was probably around SV's 2nd or 3rd seasons. It might have even been the start of Tom's realization that the world is indeed a "small" place. 'Cause if you're the star of a popular television show, people are gonna recognize you no matter where you go, even if it's in the middle of St. Peter's Sq. in Italy. My understanding is, he "attracted" the attention of quite a few fans there. LOL

Oh...any details Pat? James? I'd love to hear about this. All I remember was that his presence caused a confluence of a small "mob" of fans LOL. I've been to St. Peters Basilica. Unless the Pope is there, it's a relatively quiet, introspective place. Women are expected to wear skirts or dresses (no pants), and the last thing anybody wants to do is draw attention to themselves by being at the center of a rowdy crowd. If what I read actually happened, I'm sure he was mortified.

Having brought up the topic, I'm really curious to find out now if it's a true story. James, you out there hon? Have you heard this one? It's rather old.

I've heard it, and I don't think there's any real truth to it. At most it's probably exaggerated in that one or two people recognised him and it became a "mob" in the retelling.

Gosh I love Tom Welling.

From Kristen at EOnline!

From sammysangel: Your column two weeks ago had the interview with Jared and Jensen, and you said to ask about how close they were, so I'm asking! Also, any other scoop on Supernatural?
Oh! Thanks. No, it was a funny story about how close the Supernatural and Smallville boys are. Tom Welling told a funny story: "Supernatural and Smallville actually shoot a block away from each other, and I'm really good friends with Jensen and Jared. Last season, at one point, I actually got off a little bit earlier than they did, and I went down to their set. They weren't there yet, and I knew some of the people on set, because they had worked on Smallville, so I jumped in the backseat of their car, and if you've seen the show, you know they're always driving their car and they're pullin' in to places and getting out of their car. So, I get in the backseat, and they were in a big hurry because they were late getting to set--very unprofessional--and they jumped in the car very quickly 'cause the crew was yelling 'We're already rolling, go, go, go.' And just as they jumped in, I reached over, and I grabbed Jensen, and I pulled him into the backseat, and he didn't know what was going on. He thought it was his stunt double, so he started hittin' me, so I started hittin' him back. And then when he realized who was who, they said 'Action,' so he jumps in the front seat, we tear down this alley, he pulls into this bar and all three of us jumped out, and we all walked into this bar, and as we walked in, the door closed and we heard 'Um...cut?' They didn't know what was goin' on. So, I made an appearance on Supernatural. I believe I was edited out." Too bad, right? I'd pay to see that triple hot-boy rumble!

Ok he's SuperadultKal, *try* to see this Clark as representing just another time in Supes' life, just like Dean Cain's version was the "latest" version. What do I mean by that? Well, Cain's Superman was actually MARRIED to Lois Lane. What other live action Superman has made it that far? See my point? I know I'm stating the obvious, but Welling's "Superman" is just young Clark Kent before he's known to the world as Superman. He's still portraying the same character though. He's not Superboy; Superboy wore a costume. When Welling's Clark finally dons the suit, he'll be called Superman, not Superboy.

My only reasons why I say he isn't Superman is because although he looks like Superman he doesn't act like Superman. He is about 20 years old or 21 and I don't know I just think he doesn't act like how Superman would or even how Superboy would. To me I feel this Clark is more or less like a person from Sky High a teen with powers, not Superman. Though I dont blame Welling for that because I have faith he could be a great Superman I just blame the writing.

On a side note I think SV fans will be happy to know that SV is infact part of the movie In SR when they tell how young Clark got his powers it is just like SV only he learns to fly sooner. Also he gets his heat vision from looking at Lana instead of a hot teacher.

Thats my problem they have a year or two at the most for him to do a complete 360 and I mean being Superman doesn't come over night it takes time and we have yet really seen Clark accept what or who he really is. I mean we have yet to see Clark become a leader. The leader of all heroes. Thats my main problem with the show is that this is a story about how he became Superman and I have yet to see what makes him Superman. Sure he saves people but thats not all Superman is and Clark has yet to show that. He looks at being Kal-El and having powers more of a curse then anything else. But hey as I said before I am taking SV for what it is and that is another telling of Superman.

"Jeepers Ms. Pat, what happened?" <in best Jack Larsen Jimmy Olsen voice>

On second thought you probably shouldn't answer that... sigh...
Boy, you go away to Brussels and western Germany for a few days and the she-ite really hits da fan.

Speaking of da fan...Being in Europe during the World Cup Finals iz jest nutz. Today (for those who follow) Germany beat Costa Rica. Now keep in mind I'm currently in Brussels and the car horns were blaring, the fans were screaming and the German flags were EVERYWHERE. Crazy time I tell ya.

To the matter at hand (and sorry for the late reply). To say that Tom Welling is big in Germany (and actually quite a bit of Europe) is an understatement. My unscientific poll reveals many are not aware that umm, there was this ummm, different...ummm...direction in the ummm...casting process...um...for a certain movie...uhh...that didn't involve a certain actor that they know and really like and that there is a certain amount of confusion over the current trailer of a certain movie in that it has this other cast in it...y'see.

Now speaking strictly about SV (cause I have no idea what I meant above)...

TW is seen as Superman here because of SV, and he is a hot property in Germany. I mentioned before that the German voice over was reasonably close to TWs voice timbre, but the hard 'konsonants' of Deutch make me smile when I catch it on TV. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I have this picture of 'Klark' leaning over Lana and saying "you vill zit und you vill liszen to mein story und you vill belief it und you vill not zee zis Lex perzon again or zumone vill haf reason to regret; und zat is all I vill zey on ziz. Iz klear, ja?"

Anyway, all kidding aside. SV is very popular, but TW is a major star and is very recognizible. I'd say that's true over most of Europe. And yes, I do ask people. I'm old enough to not care if they think its a strange question from a 53 year old.

PS - Hope you're back soon, Patty me friend!

I found this article over at DTTW.

http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19689

The current issue of the French magazine, StarClub, features an interview with Tom Welling (June 2006, #223). A picture of Tom from the Smallville episode “Spell” is included also.

When asked what Tom has learned from doing Smallville, Tom replied: "self-confidence". Tom further stated that, as a beginner in the business, he had a feeling of inferiority, but now that has been replaced by self-confidence. Tom talked about his successful four-year marriage, and said it still works because both he and Jamie respect each other’s work.

Tom also said this about his marriage: He and Jamie devote their time to themselves, and it helps that they are both stay-at-home people. Asked about how he treats his wife he replies that he is both the gentle protector and "macho". He enjoys the differences between men and women. Asked further about kids, Tom says that he is not concerned with it. Besides, except for the summer hiatus he would be the worst of fathers due to his lack of time.

Asked what he thinks about being regarded as one of the sexiest actors around, Tom replies that whatever he says will be the wrong thing. If he affirms it, people will rightfully call him pretentious. If he denies it, they will say that he spoils the fun. But the fact that it's part of human nature to be flattered by compliments also applies to him.

He was also asked how much of himself he recognizes in Smallville. He said: it would not be a first degree resemblance, but still quite a bit.

Id like to see Welling's next role be a drastic change from his Clark Kent persona, possibly the villian of a film. I just don't want him to get typecast and have no future, I think he has talent it just needs to be showcased right.

I found this article over at DTTW.At least you're calling it an article, not an interview. Interview implies he had something to do with it. Those are all old quotes, poorly translated and compiled into an "interview" format - just like in most of the French magazines that I've ever seen. That's why I rarely bother with French magazines any more. The only thing they're usually good for is the nice pictures ...

Delaware newspaper thinks Welling should run for office!

Tom Welling: Best know for playing Clark Kent on the TV series Smallville, Welling spent his adolescent years in Hockessin. Who better to run for political office than Superman? (Side note: If you look hard enough on the Internet, and I have, you'll find a map of the DC Comic Universe in which Superman's other hometown, Metropolis, appears to be located somewhere around Lewes.)

From DTTW, an article appeared in a recent French Magazine. This is the translated version, obviously.

http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20089

Series: "How do you spend your spare time between two episodes of the series?"

Tom: "I don’t have really a Star‘s life. I devote time to my wife, Jamie, and I go for a drink from time to time with friends. Many series are shot in Vancouver, and thus I have the opportunity to hang out with pals there quite regularly. I made Jensen Ackles’ acquaintance when he played the role of Jason Teague in season 4. Now, he plays in Supernatural in Vancouver. Michael (Rosenbaum) and I often go on the set of this series. Michael, Jensen, Jared (Padalecki, his partner in Supernatural) and I play golf together and we often meet to drink a beer after work. It’s pretty cool, but we nevertheless find the way to make small jokes to each other to break the monotony."

Series: "Which kind (of jokes/pranks)"?

Tom: "One day when I got off early, I went to pay Jensen and Jared a visit on their set. But, as they were late, I settled in the backseat of the car which they use all the time in the series. We shouldn’t be on set before the beginning of the shooting of a scene, but most of the crew of Supernatural had worked on Smallville, and they know me. So they let me go there. When Jared and Jensen arrived on the set, they were really late and they quickly sat down in the front seat of the car. I was hidden in the backseat and they didn’t see me. One second later, I abruptly clutched Jensen by the shoulders and I frightened him (laughs). I drew him backwards and, as he didn’t understand what occurred, he started hitting me before he realized that it was me!"

Series: "Do you still enjoy being in Vancouver?"

Tom: "Yes, it’s a very pleasant city. Nature is preserved there. And even better, we are far from all the hubbub of Hollywood. The fans are also very discrete. Sometimes of course, someone asks me for an autograph, but people are polite and don’t badger you. The only problem is the weather. It rains very much in Vancouver. Often, the rain is not seen on screen, but believe me we often shoot under the rain."

Series: "Do you think that the sixth season (of Smallville)will be the last one?"

Tom: "I don’t know. We have just learned that the series was renewed and will now be aired on the CW, the new station created by the merge between the WB and UPN. This is very good news. For the rest, I don’t know. I signed a six year contract, and afterwards, we’ll have to see if the public wants to see a seventh season."

Series: "What will you do, once the series is finally finished?"

Tom: "Take long vacations, and then devote myself to the cinema."

Series: "Your look is very different today (Tom has got pretty long hair and a bushy beard). Will Clark have a new style in season 6?"

Tom: "No, I don’t think so. (laughs). My look in the series is completely due to the hairdressers and the stylists of Smallville. But right now, since we’re not shooting, it’s me in real life. As you can note, it‘s completely different. I am different than Clark."

Series: "You appeared with Maggie Grace in The Fog. How was your collaboration with her for that film?"

Tom: "Maggie was great on the set. I complained sometimes about the schedule because I was shooting the movie and Smallville at the same time. I didn’t have a lot of time to sleep with these two combined shootings. But she really put me to shame, because she was shooting The Fog and also shooting Lost in Hawaii!! When I realised that she often made round-trip in the same day, I ceased complaining. Maggie was always in a good mood. I never heard her complain."

Series: "You directed an episode of the series (Fragile) this season. Do you think you will also be directing next year?"

Tom: "I would really like to direct an episode of the series again, especially if it’s the last episode of the series. I hope to have proven myself to the producers now. I enjoyed directing the actors and to be able to provide input regarding the camera angles, and the effects which I wanted to see on screen. It’s really an experience which I hope to be able to do again. In the future, I hope I get to spend more time directing, behind the camera. But I don’t have yet any concrete project for the moment."

Series: "Are you amazed by your success as an actor?"

Tom: "Yes. I sometimes have difficulty believing it. But I’m not the one responsible for the success of Smallville. It’s a true effort of a group, we have a great cast, and good scripts. I would not be where I am, if I didn’t have excellent partners on screen."

He says he wants to spend more time behind the camera, I hope he finds the time to devote equal parts behind and in front of.

That was a nice interview. Thanks for posting it over here. What struck me most about it however, was that it didn't sound at all like Tom Welling. I somehow think *he* got lost in the french to english translation, if that makes sense.

Yeah, one of the posters over there translated it, how's that saying go....."Lost in Translation".

You never know with these foreign magazines whether they are actually interviews or if they are taking snippets from other interviews, but there were some "quotes" in there that I hadnt seen before and I thought it was worth posting.

Super time at Fenway: `Smallville' star Tom Welling - with all his Superman strength - tossed out the first pitch at Fenway Park last night. Tom, who got married on Martha's Vineyard four summers ago, is in town with his best bud, Lexington homey - and Spyglass Entertainment veep - Derek Evans, who is a BIG Red Sox fan. Post-game the boys were expected to repair to a private box at Game On! (Matt Stone)

Although... technically, I'm still gone. We're about to dock in Puerto Rico, so of course, instead of watching the beautiful scenery up on deck, I'm sneaking in some outrageously priced internet time. :D

My Tommy boy is certainly bulking up! Is it all muscle, or is he just letting loose and enjoying himself a bit before he has to get back to the grindstone. I'm hoping it's both. The guy deserves some relaxing down-time.

Hmm.. just had a thought.. he could really get some quality rexation on a CRUISE! It would be my pleasure to help him with that. No, really.. it's no problem. :p

And if she is...why promote 'Clois'? Didn't work for Season 4. Why should it work now? Besides she is SUPPORTING cast. And Smallville is supposed to be the big one on CW right...so why only like a second of it in the clip. And where is the MAIN cast? I just don't get it really.

And Tom is still looking...well...fat.

Something funny I saw today in the mall. Saw a magazine with an article on SR and they had on the side some bits on Super-productions and curiosities. One of them was about the so-called Superman curse, they mentioned Chris's acident and George Reeves killing himself and at the end they said "Tom Welling's movie career stuck to the Cheaper By The Dozen movies and a remake of the Fog." looooool
They actually said it was part of the curse, ignoring that Tom is only now starting his movie career and that his schedule limits his choices too.

Man! But his neck is looking really beefy these days. How anybody could say he looks "fat" is beyond me. His chin may be short, but I only see ONE of 'em in each of those pics up there. LOL

Ultimately, he got my vote too, but only by splitting hairs about Tom Welling not being Superman quite yet. TW's very Supermanly in his portrayal of young(ish) CK, and he will eventually become the man in tights...but for the time being, BR nabbed my vote.

Tom isn't superman yet, AOT : already said " In SMALLVILLE SUPERMAN doesn't exits yet"

Tom's Clark doesn't act like THE MAN OF STEEL. he act's like an Imature boy, who still hasn't grown up . By the end of the series Tom will be Superman . but right now he's nothing like Sups or Mild Mannered reporter Clark Kent .

Let's start by saying that they're both playing different roles, so you can't really compare, but..

As far as I'm concerned, Routh doesn't even come close. What I saw in that movie wasn't Superman, it's just the name of the movie, and considering how that movie is doing right now, the General Audience obviously didn't like it and prefers to watch other things, and that can't be good for Routh.

The 1 who made more impact on this generation remains Welling, playing CK for 5+ years and continuing.

He doesn't play Superman, he doesn't have a suit yet, but I still see Superman when I look at him, looking at articles about him, you read "Superman".

Y'see, the "problem" with that poll (especially for fence sitters), is that there's one answer for two different questions:

Who gave the better performance?
Who is the definitive Superman for this generation overall?
Those are two VERY unrelated questions.

In terms of performance - like uh... acting? My GAWD! Welling by a country mile. Puhleeeze.
(Ga head... wind me up; watch me go. Wheeeeeeeee! LOL)

The definitive Superman question is even harder since nobody has even seen Welling in the suit yet, so his M.O. as Superman really comes down to personal preference. As far as I'm concerned, the current flyboy with a suit doesn't hold a candle to the grounded version without one. At least the latter character has morals.

Breaking it down it's a matter of preference . {some people like welling, and other who love Smallville love welling, And other don't} plain and simple .

I for one still don't see Welling as THE MAN OF STEEl, and even if he wears the suit, I still don't think I'll see Welling as Sups. [due to 7 years of him as Teenager Clark jackass Kent]

Routh, on the other hand Amazed me, with his outstanding preformance as both Mild Mannered Reporter Clark Kent & As THE MAN OF STEEL : SUPERMAN . they picked a guy to take up and continue The LEGACY Reeve left behind .

Exactly and he couldn't even do that. I couldn't help but laugh and think of all the times Tom was criticized for his performance in ealier seasons because in his worst day he was never as bad as what I saw in that movie.
I thought he had a few small moments either by his own acomplishment or in the airplane sequence in which he shamelessy copied Reeve from the voice, to the looks to the dialogue. But as I said, that was a scene or two.

You know I sat there watching this episode (Reckoning) really soaking it in this time and all I could think was that this is what Superman is to me.

Now, I haven't seen the movie, but I have been reading the comments and I am absolutely flabbergasted by the fact that no one seems to question why the heck Superman had only a small bit of dialogue. Could it be perhaps that when they edited that most of his work was crap? Maybe that's why it may come off as poorly edited. Someone said that an actor is only as good as his director and I'm here to tell you as a former voice teacher that you can't teach a pig to sing no matter how hard you try.

I love watching the emotions wash over TW's face. When he feels anguish or joy it's all in the eyes. Kind of hard to see that through colored lenses don't cha think?

Anyway, haven't seen the movie so can't make any judgement per say, but I do know what I want to see in a Superman and it's someone who makes my heart go thump thump and TW does that very nicely indeed.http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif

After reading through a slew of threads where people tear down TW's acting (and now BR's acting) with very little overlap, with very few people sticking up to say "They're both fine actors in their own ways," I'm now starting to wonder why it is people see these two actors potemically. Is it that the people that love TW respond to a different register of acting that make other people (who like or love BR) think TW's acting is wooden and/or unvaried?

I really don't know what it is--I see both men as fine actors, but I realize they both appeal to different segments of people. Except for little ole freakish me in the middle. :O

Edit: Thinking of the "some actors just don't appeal to people" theory, I just remembered that my father watched STM once and never enjoyed it, and refused to see SR with me in the theater. His reason? He has and always will til the end of the time, hated Marlon Brando. I asked him why. "Because Brando has only ever played one character: himself." I should mention at this point that Jack Nicholson is one of his favorite actors. :p

...:( I think Singer chose to take the route of the strong, silent type for Superman. I didn't mind that Routh's Superman didn't have many lines. In fact, I didn't even notice that he didn't say much in the movie. It simply wasn't a concern.

I actually see some Smallville sensibilities coming to play in SR. When watching Smallville versus something, say, like Lois & Clark, the one thing that I begin to notice is the lack of "talky" dialogue in Smallville. Instead, SV focuses more on close-ups, shots of the eyes and face to show reactions, and slow, more emotionally delivered dialogue--one of the reasons Smaville has some short scripts (about 10 pages under the "average" television script, if I remember my figures right). I see some of this sensibility spill over into SR, and I like it just fine. :)

Yeah, last winter the director (Glenn Winter, also a dp for the show) said in an interview that Tom got very sick. They had to delay shooting four days right in the middle of the episode to let Tom get better.

He said that was the first time they'd ever had to delay a shoot because of Tom getting sick... He hadn't missed a single day for being sick ever before that.

In some ways I miss the casting wars days. that was one of the most fun times on these boards b/c even though there were diametrically opposed sides in some cases, at least for the most part things were civil, and every minor bit of news, or possible news, was poored over tirelessly and interpreted in a 100 different ways. There were SO MANY ups and downs. One day we were sure Bomer was signed and sealed, a month later it was gonna be Cavill, that summer Welling was a lcok and basically said so, then Caviezel was the sure thing. In retrospect, that was a blast... Everyone had hope then. We made silly polls, fan trailers and teasers, wrote plot synopsis, etc. Even the taunting that was done for the most part was good natured ribbing about Cavill in diapers, or Welling's lips, or Bomer's blank stares. Nowadays you dont know 90% of the people on the board, and people question your right to have been born on every other post....

.......You're telling me Routh was picked simply because he looked a bit like Reeve? Where ever you picked that up, you're wrong. IF you watched the Superman Documentary, it shows Routh giviing his screentest as Clark and as Superman, and Singer cleary says, "I think i found my Superman." Routh says he looks like Chris only in some of his scenes, but he is his own character. NEVER ever was Routh cast based upon if he looked like Reeve or not, it was a matter what Singer was looking for his Superman. Routh had it.

Right there with ya babe.

So, are you back home yet?

Nope, I'm in Salt Lake City. I was here in February and it was 25 degrees now its 105 degrees. Incredible!

We were in Yellowstone Park yesterday, and my hubby was a bit disappointed that he didnt see Yogi Bear. :D

We're off to Vegas on Wednesday and then back home to SD on Friday.

I have just one thing to say about driving through this absolutely awesome country, you guys have so much natural water here and I really think you should all just sit back and appreciate it some time. I have been blown away by the amount of lakes and rivers. Its incredible!

Now a picture of our favourite man.

If there is anything in those pictures of Tom Welling is his expression: very very :supes:

The way he looks up to the sky is most impressive, inspiring to say the least.

One other that got my attention was the fact that Tom, Michael and Erica were the ones chosen to do the promo: Clark, Lex and Lois...curious.

Could this mean anything? A new era for Smallville where Lois gets more attention???

That would be just silly. :p

Something isnt right about those pictures to me. His face looks like a 30 year old man which is good, but the hair; the length is that way to make him look younger? Personally I dont think it works for him anymore.

They should just cut it and make it more Superman-length now that Clark is older.

I don't care one way or the other, but how are other fans taking it? Are other sites *cough*sweet,dts,k-site,etc.*cough* having cows over this, or are people just accepting it? (Specifically: The lack of Lana/Kreuk in CW's advertising.)
