I first thought of Rogue when I saw this one. I believe James however. My memory has never been that great. Either way, I love his look here. Gorgeous...back in the days of innocence.

If it makes you feel any better though, my day wasn't the best either. It was Friday at the Credit Union I work at, so it was very busy. On top of that they instituted for this month a specialized loan for teachers in the area that allows them to borrow some money, even if their credit is down the crapper.

That just made it better, all the while I am very uncomfortable making these loans because these people had terrible credit histories, but I was still forced to approve all of these loans. It's going to come to bite us on the butt, I just know it.
Which means it'll get back to me.:(

I'll try not to mention though that my wife had homemade Lasagna waiting for me when I got home, which made the day melt away....oops...I wasnt' supposed to mention it. :O ;)

Not really...

:D

No, my weird dinner (I heated up some frozen chicken filets I keep just for this very reason, so it was okay) was pretty much my fault.

I was just a bigger ditz today than normal. I went out and got hamburger to put in the sauce that I didn't have and didn't think it was a good idea to buy more sauce in case I didn't have enough.

I even went down the pasta aisle and walked by about a million bottles of sauce, so sure was I that I had some, because I know I needed parseman cheese.

*sigh*

Silly, the sauce woulda kept if I did have enough. Next time I'll buy some just in case....

First off i was kidding. I respect both actors to a certain degree and i'm not one of those users who chooses sides of which is better...Peachy. I on the other hand DO feel there are better versions: all of them. I HATED Routh's performance. Hated it. His Superman was horrible, and his Clark Kent was even worse. He wasn't even fun to *watch* never less act. Completely vapid and devoid of any heart or soul. Sorry. My opinion. YMMV. I hope he never plays Superman EVER again.

So, kidding or not, please don't post images of Routh in a Tom Welling thread in the SV forum. Putting aside the fact that it's against SHH's rules, that kind of "kidding" tends to get overlooked by the mods here while resulting in a board probation over in the SR forum, which makes it an exasperating SORE spot for some of us [raises hand.]

More fallout from SR's dismal performance? Who knows? There have been a rash of big budget films getting the ax of late as cost cutting measures.

I know it was just conjecture that Tom might be considered for the part of Logan, but in any case its yet another film that Tom won't be in.

Here's the story on DH:

Nah, he said back in May he may not do it...
James Mcteigue is rumored to possibly take over the directors chair.

There's a possibility Bryan Singer may not direct the remake of Logan's Run.

Variety reports Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver want to start shooting the sci-fi pic this fall. That would mean Singer might end up shooting the two films, Logan's Run and a Superman Returns sequel back-to-back. Assuming Superman Returns is a hit at the box office, Warner plans to start shooting the sequel in the later part of 2007, with Singer again as director.

Even if he doesn't direct Logan's Run, Singer is still likely to play some sort of role and perhaps take a producer's credit. An official decision either way won't be made until Superman Returns opens on June 30th.

Even a report as recent as this is no guarentee, green.

Recently a hugely budgeted comedy with Jim Carrey was axed because it just simply cost too much... It had been budgeted to run into the $120 million dollar range. They canned the film two weeks before filming was supposed to start.

I dunno, you might be right but the Wachowskis moving into the LR digs on the Warner's lot may not be a good sign. If it was supposed to be anything as big as The Island ($140 mil) or Poseiden ($180 mil), I can understand them killing it.

Oh I know...I was just trying to make it clear this was in the works before SR opened and it wasnt its b.o. perfromance that caused the situation. Yeah that may have had something to do with it but the production was being questioned even before so...eh, Im just tired of the Singer bashing already.

I was referring to this article from June 30th

AS of then he was still planning on doing it, just delayed. Now it appears the film is dead and no one is doing it, not just Singer.

I wasn't really bashing Singer, but the fact is that SR seriously underperformed for Warner's and so did Poseiden and The Island.... Another expensive FX heavy actioner might sound too risky for Warner's at the moment.

If Logan's Run is dead, then it's because Warner's is playing it safe. They've lost too much recently...

Yeah, it's made 190+ domestic and 140+ foreign, but it's losing its legs big time and losing screens drastically from week to week. It has a barely third of the screens it had opening weekend, if it makes 200mil domestically I'd be surprised.

It cost upwards of 260 mil to make and a rumored 100 mil to promote... at 340 mil, it won't even break even at this rate...

Yeah, The Island was a joke comparatively at the box office as was Poseiden, but they didn't cost nearly as much to make and promote as SR did either...

After those two fiascos, and others, Warners needed SR to hit it out of the park and it just didn't...

Even if SR does limp over the finish line finally breaking even, it will still be considered a disapointment. (Okay, I'm mixing my metaphors, but hopefully you get the point.)

There can never be enough pictures of that man. Even after 5+ years of Smallville, I haven't lost even a tiny bit of interest in him. I suppose it helps that he's so private about his real life, and he's not all over the tabloids.

Funny you should say that. I was standing at the Supermarket checkout today, scanning the magazine headlines. It's always the same people in those magazines, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Anniston. Pamela Big Boobs hasnt done anything for years and she's still manages to get herself on the front covers. I thought to myself I'm so glad my favourite celebrity is never seen gracing these stupid magazine covers with their crazy lives and that deep down Tom Welling just likes being a normal guy.

Excuse me, isn't this the Official Tom Welling Thread?

Shouldn't certain answers... and questions, be posted on another thread? :confused:LOL! I'll do ya one better.

One of the yardsticks used to determine word of mouth is how much a film drops in attendance in its second week of release. Big blockbusters that are front loaded (the bulk of the audience sees the film in its first weekend) tend to drop 40% - 50%. This is "normal." Generally speaking, the lower the dropoff, the better the WOM. Every once in a blue moon, a film will actually have a larger attendance in its second week. This can be a combination of good WOM, a holiday weekend in week 2, and/or an increase in screens. But when you start out super saturated (eg: 3000 or more theaters), there's not much higher you can go.

Aight.... so where am I going with this? Heh. Glad you asked. Check out which film currently holds the NUMBER 1 spot for smallest dropoff (it had a 55.6% *increase* in admissions) in its second week of release in more than 3000 theaters:

That's really impressive.
It occurs to me that although people can try and mock the three films that Tom has been in, all three have been financial successes, if not critical ones. In a business where money talks, that has to be noticed at some point - hopefully right around the time that Tom finishes his work on SV and has more time to devote to a film career.

Family films may not carry a "cool" factor, but I really did enjoy both of the CBTD movies for what they were. But I adore Steve, Bonnie and that good looking guy who played their oldest son. :D

As you know, I like playing Devil's Advocate here, so here it goes. (Remember, I mean no harm, I do enjoy coming around here)..............

Critically, all 3 films TW has appeared in have been failures.

-CBD 24% critical rating
-CBD2 - a God awful 7%
-The Fog - a poor 6%.

Both CBD films are Steve Martin vehicles obviously and you know he was pretty much responsible for the films making what they did. The only film you can really judge TW for is The Fog, which did an abysmal $29m domestically and was out of theatres in 6 weeks. Not a good showing.

To me, there's two ways to look at a film financially - the overall gross, which is what general audiences are attracted to and want to see, and the other is profitability of course. While you can argue The Fog made money, it still didn't register with general audiences when looking at it's domestic gross.

TW needs to land some small roles in high profile films - I wish he would have been able to do Live Free or Die Hard, or some other film with a big name actor. He's going to struggle when SV is over if he doesn't start doing some very different things.........just my opinion of course, I wish him well.........

Oh, and since we're talking about critical (which means NOTHING) verses financial (which means EVERYTHING) success, lets crunch some really BASIC numbers on a few films, just for the helluvit. These are the numbers that people [read: investors] see immediately. There's no six month squirm-in-your-seat and hope that the home video release pulls their collective tushes out of the fire mentality here. Cue the obligatory ancillary, toys, home video, foreign B.O., TV broadcast and other revenue sources counter argument.

Meh. Don't bother. When you need to resort to looking beyond domestic exhibitor ticket sales in order to show a profit for a film, you're just grasping for straws. ALL films will end up in the black eventually. Key word: eventually. Investors don't want to hear that, nor do the studios that release the product.

Whatever you say Brainiac and Kaboom............

My post wasn't to question the profitability of those films, or to bring SR into the debate. I already knew those films made money, heck, everybody does. My post was about box office TOTALS, which defines what general audiences are attracted to, simple.

I also showed what most critics thought of those films, which were God awful numbers. At least Pirates was over 50%..........

Showing numbers of a huge blockbuster, 2 Steve Martin films that the majority of audiences didn't even know TW was in, and the abysmal numbers of the one film TW co-headlined isn't cause for celebration of TW being the next Johnny Depp anytime soon.

Whether or not they were blockbusters, I think the point was that he has bankability. All of his movies have been profitable. The movie that he was cast as lead in was also the number one movie for it's opening weekend. Okay so it was weak, but when you think about it it's not a bad showing for a guy who was a complete novice 5 years ago.

Whether or not they were blockbusters, I think the point was that he has bankability.http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/prize.gif

And I disagree that audiences go to see films because they have big box office tallies. I think that's the craziest thing I've ever heard on this board. Folks may be curious what all the hubbub's about, but people see films if the plot/topic interests them, if it stars actors they want to see, or if somebody recommends it (WOM). Big numbers at the box office don't make people come back to see a film repeatedly; an ENTERTAINING movie does. Hello?

But to be fair, I did oversimplify the big picture back there, if only to make a point about numbers and perception. Studios don't get back every dime exhibitors take in, and P&A fees add to the overall costs after the film is in the can. Foreign presales can put a film in the black *before* it's even released domestically, and the home video market IS undeniably HUGE.

The average schmo on the street doesn't see these things however. Hell, for the most part, WE don't even see these things. The average schmo hears a film costs X amount of dollars to produce and makes X amount of dollars in theaters. The mentality after that is to just balance what went in to what came out - albeit on a very oversimplified surface level. Everybody thinks this way. It may not be the *right* way to see things, but perception can be a pretty powerful motivator.

That said, Welling's three films made coin, and one of them - the first CBTD - made a HUGE amount. Enough to warrant a sequel. But CBTD and The Fog aren't franchise films. IOW, they're not made with the intention of making sequels, though I'm sure Sony would have fast tracked a sequel to The Fog had the remake grossed over 100 mil. That's a no brainer. The film still made its budget back however, and did so very quickly, which is key. The CBTD films have done very VERY well for Fox. CBTD2, for example, hit store shelves about 10 weeks ago and grossed over $35M in RENTALS alone. That aint chicken feed for a film that cost about $30M to make and had already grossed almost $130M worldwide at the B.O. before it went to the home video market.

Were these films critically acclaimed? Oh jeeze, HELL no! LOL But arguing that they didn't absolutely positively RAKE IT IN is just.... dumb. Profit is what studios - and casting agents - pay attention to the most. That's WHY certain directors and actors are sought, and THAT was the whole point of this conversation.

Man! Deja vu. Haven't we discussed all this before? :p

Then this cast must be still reading all the scripts thrown their way after an ROI percentage of about...oh

Hey, dont pick on me!:) This is the official Tom Welling thread is it not? I was responding to a post that was belittling my main man's achievements. Can't have that now can we?

Anyway, as a response to your "spin" isn't it amazing when a director takes an old fashioned concept and puts an original spin on it? Just saying a little originality can go a long way. Clerks anyone?

Showing numbers of a huge blockbuster, 2 Steve Martin films that the majority of audiences didn't even know TW was in, and the abysmal numbers of the one film TW co-headlined isn't cause for celebration of TW being the next Johnny Depp anytime soon.

UMMMM....i seriously doub there have been any gallup polls regarding the general audience knowledge of whether or not TW was in Cheaper by the dozen so that you can substantiate that "point" you were making.

if its any consolation (which to you it wont because itll prove B8 and i and pat were right) Tom Welling got the third highest billing behind Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. Dont believe me? go check out the official homepage of the movie. I think thats pretty self explanatory.

Hooray Team!

Actually, 3rd highest billing would go to Hillary Duff, if you really wanted to compare 'Star Status'.

Tom is 4th though. Not bad for his 1st movie.

You know what? When I went and saw CBTD2 at the theatre, I was surveyed, as was my son, and I clearly, clearly stated that the reason I was seeing this movie was because Tom Welling was in it.
:)

And my opinion on Tom Welling's star status, if he wants to move into cinema after Smallville is done, he will and if so chooses to, he will make it in a big way. He's already proven that he can do what it takes to fill a theatre.

Its all up to him as to what he chooses to do with life after Smallville.

LOL! thanks alot, in an effort to save my rear end, let me just say that polls are conducted by all sorts of organizations so the one you took might not have been a gallop poll. ALSO, with regard to the "general audience" knwoing tw was in the movie or not, im not sure the value of poll coming from an audience of that specific movie could be properly extrapolated to audience at large.

but my orignal point, is still valid, you cant make an assertion that a alarge segment of the a particular populatin either knows or doesnt know something without quantative data to support the position

I wasnt trying to refute your argument by saying I took a poll, I just thought it was funny that you mentioned polling the movie and I actually was polled. :)

Okay, but.... I already had the movie's attention, the "Whoevers" just wanted to know why I was seeing the film. Considering there were 4 names in the movie, they were probably guaging everyone's opinions on who their pick was. Most of the questions were geared around this.

but my orignal point, is still valid, you cant make an assertion that a alarge segment of the a particular populatin either knows or doesnt know something without quantative data to support the position

Point is, you can spin this type of conversation in any direction you'd like.Geeze. Why stop with BWP, Pickle? If you wanted to provide an example of ROI, just site Deep Throat.

C'mon! BWP was a student film with one helluva marketing angle. They got lucky. Re-heeeeely lucky. They were in the right place at the right time and all the planets aligned. Read up on it, 'cause using that film as an ROI comparison to any other film produced by a Hollywood Major is simply ridiculous.

Perhaps you and others missed the point though. The success of the CBTD films and even The Fog isn't something that needs to be "spun." They aren't anomalies. They were bankable films due to their genres and casts. Two were family friendly films with a comedic story and the third was a light horror. All three had casts with a devout fanship and cult popularity. Tom Welling is one of them. Not sure why some people feel this even needs to be argued.

I thought he didn't look as bearded as in Fenwik (believe me, I study every pic of Tom very carefully), but the pic was a little bit unfocused, and it was hard to see the beard with all the bottles. And the t-shirt is definitely the same colour.

I didn't watch the show, but I thought Rufus was one of the nominees along with Depp? So I have a question, if a director gets 10 mil for a movie plus 7% of profits what do they do if there is no profits? Do they deduct from his/her original sum?The director gets his upfront salary, whatever that is, and then he/she will get "bonus" pay on top of that - if there is any. That would all have been pre-negotiated ahead of time however, because while it's a known fact that EVERY film will show a profit eventually, I'm pretty sure Singer doesn't want to have to wait fifty years to get his little bonus. :p

The blog "Singer's Superman Sucks" has an interesting post about the TCAs.
http://singerssupermansucks.blogspot.com/2006/08/ok-ok-well-talk-about-tcas.html

This is the best bit:
Compounding the humorous factor to this was the fact that about three minutes later, the "other Superman," Tom Welling, comes out to present an award looking built like a brick ****house, and well groomed in a stylish sport coat, and they actually let him up on stage to give it. The crowd seemingly goes nuts, with the typical "We love you Tom's" echoing all around.

*cough*bullsheet*cough*

Tom Cruise's part would have NEVER been offered to Tom Welling. Ever.

The main reason is that the project apparently was started because of Cruise, according to Greg over on Yahoo Movies (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/preview/1808406485):

5/12/02 - Variety reported this week that Tom Cruise is working with Paramount, in his side career as a producer, to get a big-budget adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel in production by sometime next year, 2003, which means it could easily beat this independent film to the punch. Will Pendragon just scrap this altogether, or will they be able to pull together their resources to try to get this going before Paramount's? If they do... will they be able to compete with a big studio on a high-tech project like this? Expect a preview page for the Cruise/Paramount project sometime this summer, 2002. (5/17/02) Michael Fleming of Variety reports that Steven Spielberg is rumored to be interested in directing that film. Boy, these two projects couldn't be on much farther ends of the film industry's collective food chain.

The indy film by Pendragon (http://www.pendragonpictures.com/WOTWKEY.html) looks to have been turned into a direct to DVD release. (An awful one at that, if the trailer (http://www.buywowdvd.com/wowtrailer.html) is any indication. That looks so bad, it has to be a joke of some kind... Yikes. )

Perhaps, giving the poster the some credit, it was the OTHER proposed production of WoTW that Tom Welling was offered a part in.

That sounds much more reasonable.
