Now that I'm surfing a bit more.. I never realized how much Tom/SV art there is on deviantart. Some good.. some abysmal. ;)
This girl has a few gorgeous drawings based on Tom photos that we've all seen, including one of my all-time favorite pics.

Excerpt from the S5 DVD commentary on Splinter (link posted in the DVD thread).
JMs = James Marshall
JM = James Marsters
SdK - Steven DeKnight
JMs: Tom had a lot of ideas, he did a lot of script analysis and came very well prepared for what he wanted to do with this particular role and I thought that he, that it, was very, very good it was very nuanced he, it was a nice, proper, slow build to it, and when you shoot out of sequence sometimes that’s difficult, you know sometimes you’re shooting scene twenty eight before you’ve thought about scene four and he did a lot of homework and tracked it very well.
SdK: And it really shows, I think it’s some of Tom’s best work.
JM: I was watching that scene where he had Lana up against the wall and he was choking her out and I just thought that that was such good acting man, so specific moment to moment and just letting you in on what his problem , his brain process is and how the paranoid brain process was working and it was so clear. Tom's GOOD! And you know he’s playing and you know he admits this, he’s playing a character who is not intellectually based, he says “ I am based in the heart”, well not *I* am, not Tom but Clark and it would be so easy to bland that out and erm not… but he approaches it, a character that’s not intellectual, in an intellectual way.

Tom has slowly become so good, I have been so mystified why people online so often miss that and mistake Clark's scripted reaction shots as Tom not being a good actor...
I get the impression that a lot of people believe I'm too much of a fan about Tom in my reviews. (I know I get grief about it no end over the k-site forums.) However, I will never apologize for that because I honestly am a fan of his acting, not just his looks.
So it's very gratifying to see that's not just my fannish girl gushing at work here and that an actor of James Marsters stature and technical expertise (he's a classically trained Shakespearean actor) recognizes Tom's skill and enjoys watching him work...
Good onya, Tom!
He did a marvelous job in Splinter and it is truly some of his best work.

I got a kick out of this article (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/4155259.html), which rated SV lowest among Thursday night skeins in its appeal to general female audiences...
• Smallville: 7 p.m. Thursdays, debuts Sept. 28, the CW
The allure: A young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) comes of age just as he's starting to realize his superhero powers.
The eye-candy quotient: Welling is, well, gorgeous.
Pink-meter rating: 5. With the exception of tough-talking Lana (Kristin Kreuk) and romantic tension, this is a pretty masculine series. But, women do love a hero.
"Tough-talking Lana?" HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I think they missed the boat on that one, but I'll cut the author a break.

Maybe the author meant Lois...? All of the fans of Smallville that I've met in person over the last four years have been girls (college age mostly, since I'm in college). I've only know two...two! male fans of SV. And come to think about it, the cast is predominantly female. Hell, I don't even think Clark has a male friend left. But she's rating in pink, so I'd rather not belabor the point. :p

I just read this over at Rutger Hauer's site. It was so adorable I had to share it with you.
http://www.rutgerhauer.org/newsletters/nl030718_19.php
Anyway, I'll tell you a little about 'SMALLVILLE'. I have seen about 9 different episodes before getting to work myself. It has many good qualities going for it and it's been done in smart ways. On my first day I had to dive in rapidly for a rather big scene. I felt it was quite a bit overwritten which tends to kill the strength if nothing else. In TV series/works the written words as scripted tend to be kept to rather strict. For good reasons. Altering can run into more cans of beans to handle. Plus the fact that it is a different craft in itself. After meeting the star of the series, Tom Welling, I felt a bit better. He felt the same way and was very polite in addressing this because this can be painful for some actors as it is the only thing they have. I was introduced to the director and understood very quickly how things were done here. They were done on the side and very, very quickly. I had not quite learned my lines as I hate to have to re-learn them if changed at the last minute which we had just done. It gets really tricky. Hardly any rehearsal. Do it.Do it. Ofcourse,we did. But what a different approach. We trimmed the three pages back to about two. Which seemed appropriate. But changes had to be phoned in and approved. Basically, all of this comes down to little time to be creative and truthful. Tough. The director is a great man. Quick and together. Good sense of humour. A great guide. Since I had to wait for hrs again I was quite anxious and nervous before getting into it. And then working so rapidly. Ouch. Learning the steps of this trade and just having to admit it is not the best for my skills although not bad to know that it indeed isn't. Each to his own. Always good to re-establish where you don't belong. I'll have to work hard to make this work. And will of course. I also realize part of the difficulties on 'SALEM'S LOT'. It being the same animal. Format etc.
Monday I'll have another scene with Tom and the same director. Then a new director will show up for the next episode. It's an eyecandy factory. They work nine months a year. One of the best things about the profession is that you get to work with some really great colleagues. So here I am. Doing my scene with Tom, who I have just met and who is something twenty and was basically discovered two years ago. No previous training. And as we go I find one of the most generous and gentle guys to work with. Relaxed, together, upbeat, intelligent and on the cellphone one moment and focused for a 100% the next. Having a good time with it and me. Liking it that he can be a bit silly as the character. Just lovely. God bless him. Truly an actor you'd wish for to work with if you could. A very special treat. And at least as nice as you would think when you watch him going through some of the insanity of the series. He hopes to get into films after being released from the series. Pffft. Three more years to go. I reassured him he had it all going for him. No doubt about it. So Tom. I hold you in the highest regards. You are a haloblizzard, or I'll be damned.

Actually I tend to think that it's more like this:
MCK + Superman = Kal El
Supes is his alien side full on display, but a disguise none the less
MCK is his interpretation of how he should act in society also a disguise.

Kal-EL is the real preson, Jor-EL & Lara gave him the name Kal-EL on the day of his birth on Krypton . The Identity Clark Kent was given to him by The Kent so that know one would know the truth of his origins also The Jonathan & Martha Kent didn't know his name was Kal-EL when they found him . The name SUPERMAN was given to Kal-EL by Lois Lane after he resuced her, Lois created the name for the public to know Kal-EL when he was in the Super suit. [but even then he is still Kal-EL : son of Jor-EL & Lara of Krypton] [Clark kent is just a disguise to keep Kal-EL's Identity a secret from the world, when trying to live his life with mortal on earth .]

SUPERMAN is the real deal[no matter how many times some people try to change it, it end up being Kal-El is the real deal [after all he's an alien, even as clark Kent he's still an alien, and he always will be.], Because Kal-EL doesn't have to hide his Kryptonian Heritage, or his powers as Clark Kent [he has to hide his secret].
NHawk19
09-11-2006, 03:03 PM
See I'm not sure if you're supporting my arguement or trying to clarify here's why:
Kal-EL is the real preson, Jor-EL & Lara gave him the name Kal-EL on the day of his birth on Krypton . The Identity Clark Kent was given to him by The Kent so that know one would know the truth of his origins also The Jonathan & Martha Kent didn't know his name was Kal-EL when they found him .
I'm familiar with this part, but he was still Kal-El at this point. The Kent's had to call him something as they didnt know his name anyway. Plus they wanted to raise him as he was abandoned. Granted there was a spaceship and all but they raised him, and gave him his values. This is the part where I think the Kal-El Clark name is synonymous. And I would say it remains as such until the suit is revealed to the world.
The name SUPERMAN was given to Kal-EL by Lois Lane after he resuced her, Lois created the name for the public to know Kal-EL when he was in the Super suit. [but even then he is still Kal-EL : son of Jor-EL & Lara of Krypton]
But the suit is also a disguise to protect Kal or SCK his family and friends. The true Clark who can acknowledge his feelings for Lois, his family, friends, and small town issues is never seen. Yes he can acknowledge himself as Kal-El but not Clark.
[Clark kent is just a disguise to keep Kal-EL's Identity a secret from the world, when trying to live his life with mortal on earth .]
Again I get that. MCK is also a disguise. It adds more protection to family and friends by blending in.
However it's not until Kal is with a trusted group of people that he can actually speak frankly and act as an everyday person. Either on the farm or with Lois. This is best exemplified when neither the guise of reporter or the guise of Superman has been adopted.
As both Superman and MCK he has to hide, so only as Kal or the Farmboy do we get to see the sum of the other parts. It's also the only time when he can completely be and act of both human and alien simultaneously.

Absolutely agree with this. And this is why Smallville has the farm all glowy and warm, because this is the only time that Clark can really be himself.

Agree with NHawk as well, although, the way I see it, is that there's no Kal-El. You can call him Kal-El if you want to, it's his real name so you have to, but for him to be really Kal-El, he'd have to be living on his own home planet among other Kryptonians from the day he was born. He stopped being Kal-El the moment he was put inside that ship and sent to earth. There wouldn't be any SmallvilleCK/MetropolisCK or Superman if he stayed on Krypton, and he'd be a completely different.. alien.

Well, yeah but they've been absent from the marketing for awhile, so that shouldn't be a surprise.
You know, I hate their group cast shots that weren't really shot as a group.
I mean, great images BUT the shadows are all different... those images were photoshopped to look like they were taken at the same time.

Aren't you being a little harsh on the DTTW mods, Pat? :wow:Calling them "posting Nazis?" Yeah, perhaps a bit harsh. :O But their preoccupation with amount of images allowed per post, image size, and back-to-back posting gives me a headache. :( I think folks should be allowed to use their own judgment on image size, and if the amount of images per post is a problem, it's easily solved using the board's own software - like it is here (only seven images are allowed at a time.) Back-to-back posting is what it is: usually a brain fart - "oopz - I forgot to add blank to my last post." Unless it's a clear case of intentional spamming, I'd say just let it go. Nobody really cares, and if bandwidth is *that* big of a deal, they shouldn't be running a message board. JMHO.
And from what I've seen, here your knuckles can be easily cracked, and your posts deleted, about *other* things. :cwink:Honestly, SHH is probably one of the most laid back boards I know when it comes to mod interference. It's very VERY rare to see posts deleted here. Sure, it happens, but not like I've seen on other boards. Same goes for banning. You have to be pretty baaaaad to be banned here. Even redundancy is overlooked - this forum especially. How many threads about Batman appearing on SV have there been? LOL
If folks catch any heat around these parts, it's usually for idiocy (ex: redundant threads), and it usually comes from fellow posters, not the mods. Also, of all the mods at the Hype, there's maybe like two who actually give two hoots about Smallville to even visit here: Morg and C.Lee. If the proverbial poop hits the fan, PM one of them. Otherwise, a bloodbath could continue for days in this forum LOL. Nobody pays any attention to us red-headed step children of comic fandom. ;)
Kai, that was too damn funny. Y'think the "tights" issue hits a nerve? LMAO!!!

Pat, I hope you are not confused between DTTW and DTS, they are really different sites, (though both are incorporated to DFN)
There have to be rules for image size since there you can use banners and avies, in fact you just need just 50 posts to have an avie, and it would be impossible to do that without any control. And I certainly love to see those gorgeous banners and avies of Tom and don't want to lose them, as happened to so many sites, K-site included.
I know some people have had unhappy experiences with DTS and even with DTTW, for which I'm really sorry. I just can talk about DTTW and I can tell you that my fellow co-mods there, from what I know of course, are friendly, polite, helpful and dedicated people, and true Tom fans. Neither Tom bashing or rude posts of any kind are allowed there.
I respect every opinion and I don't want to start an argument here. I don't usually discuss other sites on different boards. I know DTTW is not very popular here, but I think it's fair for me to say this, more so since you expressly mentioned the DTTW mods and I happen to be one of them.
But first and foremost, I am a Tom / Clark lover. Anywhere. And that’s what really matters to me.

Whiteflag, I realise you didn't want to start an argument, but I can't sit idly by while you defend DFN's (many people use DTS, DTTW, and DFN interchangeably) staff as "friendly" and "polite", and claim that they don't allow rude/bashing posts ...
The staff over there that I've dealt with have been almost invariably rude, unreasonable, and completely unwilling to help with anything. Worse, I'm far from being the only person to have been treated that way. I can think of half a dozen that I know personally, some of whom post here, and that's from a very small sampling of DFN's entire audience. To think that there aren't most likely dozens, or even hundreds of others who have been treated the same way, is at best naive and at worst a conscious decision to accept or ignore it. Poor treatment by DFN is, in my estimation, the norm rather than the exception.
As far as not allowing rudeness or bashing, you're right that they don't allow bashing of the actors, crew, and their families. Unfortunately that courtesy doesn't extend to the "normal" people. There are, or were, many thinly-veiled attacks on myself and others around DFN's boards, both by members and by the "friendly, polite" staff. I never spoke to you in your capacity as a mod over there, so I'm not going to generalise that every staff member is the same. Nonetheless, when you get treated so poorly, for so long, by the people you have dealt with, you're not likely to have much willingness to give any of the others a chance.
It's great that you think you can be a Tom/Clark lover anywhere. I used to think the same thing. Unfortunately I paid a high price for that philosophy, and I've come to the realisation that for myself, where DFN is concerned, it no longer works that way.
Don't worry, this is probably my final word on the subject.

James, I respect your opinion and, as you very well know, I have always being respectful to you whenever I've had the chance to exchange any communication with you. It always saddens me that true Tom fans can have irreconcilable differences and I always refuse to allows things I have not control over to interfere with my healthy and friendly exchange of love for all things Tom on the net. As I said, I don't usually discuss these things publicly on boards. This time I felt I had to say something on behalf not only of myself, but also of people who have always been kind and respectful to me. I'm talking about my own experience, as you refer to yours, and I'm talking about DTTW that is the site I know.
Yes, I maybe naive, but I still believe we tend to complicated things that could be much simpler. And I maybe naive, but I'm terribly sorry all Tom sites cannot get along. I personally try to get along with every Tom fan I meet, wherever I meet them. I never bash any person or site on any board and I plan never to, if I can help it.
I'll take the rest of my thoughts to pm, as I don't want to cause any ill feelings here or to embitter the online experience of anyone.

I'm still bitter of how I was treated over there by other DTTW mods, but I still don't care that you're a mod over there, Carol.
You're friends with friends of mine so as long as you can play nice here, you're okay with me, but don't mistake my feelings on the matter and don't expect me to hide my strong feelings about it when the subject comes up.

Nice comments, Whiteflag. I also find it very disheartening to see so many of the fans splintered in what are sometimes very aggresive and extreme groups.
I think we all agree about Tom/Clark, and that should reason enough for be able to at least get along.. The other alternative is moving on to someplace with more like-minded peope.
I skim through DTTW on a regular basis, but I can't say that it will ever be a regular haunt for me. I too find the modding over there heavy-handed.. and not well-balanced. Certain posters carry a lot more weight around there, and they don't hesitate to use that power to intimidate others, who might otherwise disagree with the party-line.
I really am thrilled to have lots of options in Tom sites. It's just that not all forum have the same group dynamics
Just recently, I PMd a person on DTTW that I had PMs with along time ago. She's very much a regular though.. so I know she knows about PMs. I was writing to compliment her work and to ask a question about PS. So far, she's totally ignored me. Guess I'm just not worthy enough since I rarely post there. It's not a biggie, and at this point I have no interest in talking to her again.
The incidents with James and Triplet getting kicked out are definitely part of not having any desire to be a regular there.
Recently, again on DTTW.. I saw a post from someone b*itching about James puting watermarks on the pictures he's posted. Good freakin' grief.. they ALL do that, just as they all want to posts scoops first. I wish all the sites could get along, but fans are a very diverse group, and we all have our individual needs.
I'm glad you are posting here, Whiteflag. I know you are a huge supporter of Tom/Clark. I'm glad we cleared up our first little run-in. :) I'm still debating starting up that LJ comm.for Only Tom.
But there is some very badblood between DTTW and James site.
And knowing more of stories from James and Cindy.. and seeing myself how that place is run.. I prefer it here. I still se things posted over there that b*tch about James...Do you know that James used to have DTTW banner on his site?? Times change..
This is what sucks the most for any of the 'ship fans.. DTS/DTTW now have the reputation of beng a Clois. K-site has the rep of being a Chlark site.
Sweet, makes no bones about it.. All Clana - then KK, then TW. And there are extremist die-hards on all the sites,
I don't really care if people have different favorites.. Until they get into bashing just to bash, as opposed to having civil discussions before agreeing to disagree.
Anyway... long rambling post, I know.. but keep in mind that I'm on some very heavy Happy Pills, right now. :D

There really was only a little bit of Tom, but what there was, was cute, of course. :) It was basically a preview of the longer interview that will be coming up on ET(?). That really pretty MTV VJ flew up to Vancouver and interviewed Tom on the set.
I made a few caps that James will be posting sometime. There really wasn't very much, like I said, and stooopid MTV has to have such funky visuals that the quality isn't very good on the caps.
Here's one though:

Actually, there are no spoilers on that part of that episode...
I think it's Kal might have thought that only because of Lex's long standing hero-worship of someone who tried to rule the world before he was 30.
I think it's up in the air, personally.
Looks more like Roman armor to me and if Lana's dressed like Cleopatra, which might make sense only from the make-up she's wearing in that one trailer, then it would appear that Lex might be dressed up as Marc Anthony, and not Alexander the Great....
