I actually compare them when someone talks about Tom (Welling)'s acting ability. I say that ppl use to say the same thing about Cruise, DiCaprio and Pitt (even when they would discuss their early less than stellar work in movies) and all three of them have grown up as artists, turned out really great actors in spite of being sex-symbols.
I think Welling if given the chance could go the same way and you don't even have to go far, just compare him in season 1 and see how far he's gone. I'm mean the guy is a really hard worker and he's not relying just on his looks to get over, he has genuinely learned from every experienced actor he has worked with and has improved alot.
To me it was even more interesting than to watch an already established/experienced actor because there would be no sense of novelty and growth, and with Tom I was rooting (as an actor myself I know how hard a job acting really is) for him all the way and was cheering every time I'd see a great performance, or a great look, or perfect comedy timing or just something really subtle that only true greats can acomplish.
And the real kick of this tv show is to really be able to see an actor grow in his role (pretty much like Clark is growing up and learning) and become THAT man.
That's something not even Chris as great as he was had a chance, he had to do a backstory on the character on his own mind and create his performance from it. The producers were very smart in this and this really the only way for the public to acept a sucessor of a Superman so strong in the public's eyes as Chris was: to let the public get to know the actor/character, watch it grow and actually grow along with him until they're familiar with him almost like he was a family member.
Tom was a perfect choice in every regard, he has stepped up to the challenge and he proved that he is worthy of the cape. And of becoming a great actor in his own right with performances in really good and interesting movies in the future.

No No no you cant compare him with those three they all showed promise from the start, Brad pitt got it the worst and thats because of his looks.

No No no you cant compare him with those threeYes, we can. They're all actors and have had the same comments made about them early in their careers.

they all showed promise from the startIndeed! ALL of them.

I'm not sure what your definition of "showing promise" is SatEl, but in the "reel" world of Hollywood, it's typically a description predicated on more than just one element. "Talent" for example, is more than just the ability to realistically deliver lines. If it were, actors from John Wayne to Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn't have made it in the biz. Put simply, it's the ability to entertain.

Brad pitt got it the worst and that's because of his looks.Nascent actors described as "showing promise" often have a uniqueness, charisma, and/or special appeal that separates them from the generality of their peers. If appearance is one of those attributes, then so be it. Appearance is VERY important in just about any role, and actors are often cast based on that. Hello? Think about it. I realize the likelihood for success in Hollywood probably has as much to do with luck and connections as it does talent, but there's no denying that genes play a huge role as well.

Damn, that man IS Clark Kent for this era, not just some ripoff of Reeve. For the love of god I hope to see a tv movie or something about his adventures as Superman. I mean, this Clark is truly a different person than the one of the donnerverse, I want to know what happens to him in the future.

Actually it's not complicated. None of this. There is only one person on this board here who always does this s*** (excuse the language). You guys are just looking in the wrong forums on DFN. The person is a Clois/Lois shipper. Name on DFN _Spider-Man_ aka Kal-El 8 here if I'm correct (if not sorry). He did this before with pics that I posted. No credit at all either. Just reposting all over the place and having a big fat smile on his face from all the a$$ kissage he gets from the members. I called him out on it openly in the Clois thread on DFN before. He ignores it. Doesn't care. Whatever. It's your usual internet behavior. One of the many reasons why I'm not to keen on sharing pics openly, much less unprotected in some way (hell tags just get cut off either way).

Here is the thread link.

http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24761&page=8&pp=25

Now don't get me wrong. I do like to share. Even though to some it doesn't seem like it. But if I spend hours on finding just one little pic or a handful of pics the least I deserve is a thank you. Because it really is no fun. It can take up hours of a day. Ask my friends why they think I have insomnia.

Anyway so that we aren't completely off-topic here. Season 1 Clark from the Pilot.

Kal-El8 is this you? http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1015300&postcount=186

If so, would it have been that big a deal to send me a quick PM to ask before you posted that? I would have more than likely said the same thing Scarlett posted to you; it's more appropriate for a Tom/Clark forum or thread as opposed to a Clois forum.

Now I'm wondering if you reposted my Lois Lane picture without asking too.

Here's the problem - I don't honestly care about the credit.. <insert Pat's Welcome to the Internet sign>. But you posted completely erroneous information with it, "THIS IS REAL NOT A MANIP." Wtf?? Did you honestly think that? If you had ASKED, you would have known.

Also, anyone who posts any kind of art enjoys reading their own feedback. You, my friend, took that away from me.

I realize that you are very young, and more than a little excitable, so I'm not going to flip out at you. But I hope you know to simply ask first next time.

Nope, not that one... Too dark.

I used images from a magazine photo shoot, a season 4 promo, Aqua, Hidden, Spell and the Fog I believe....

Wanted to use ones from Transference and Hypnotic, but they were also too dark with not enough contrast... didn't look good compared to the others.

That's probably a total fabrication. I can't see a reason why Tom and Jensen would want to sit with two total strangers. And if it's true, yes, I'm sorry for Tom. Fans can be really annoying and of course they are ready and willing to find fault with anyone who doesn't totally get out of their way for them, as if they had a right to be entertained and adored by the celebs. You know that sounds like a poster at Ksite, who at the moment is spewing garb about having coffee with Tom and Michael at some coffee shop on Robson Street. That poster was unable to put two words together to make a sentence as well.

Why on earth would two celebrities allow two strangers to sit down and eat with them, and why would Jensen say yes without asking Tom if it was okay with him.

A couple of things from DTTW.

http://www.devotedfansnetwork.com/index.php?page=tomwelling

Flavie Montières, 19 years old, has a head full of dreams, but is still down to earth. In September 2005, she attended the famous Special Effects School of Paris. This year, our ‘Amienoise’ (people from the French town Amiens) is in her sophomore year, and the school is so renowned that the Hollywood Studios came to recruit the holder-of-a-diploma-to-be from the junior year.

In August, the school students traveled to Vancouver, British of Columbia, Canada, where a lot of American series, and in particular science fiction series shoot, to learn the actors’ work before the special effects technicians’ work.

“The more interesting experience for my job-to-be was the visit on the set of Smallville”, said Flavie. Smallville is a series about the young Clark Kent before he becomes Superman, Saturday on station M6.

It was a day devoted to stunts and special effects and the main actor (Tom Welling) was there. He had to do all the gestures making it possible to integrate the special effects next. Run from point A to point B then from point B to point C. He had to run a certain way and if it wasn’t what the stunt crew wanted, he started again and again. Then, in front of a green screen, he had to fight with a make-believe enemy

His sister went to visit him with her two daughters. Between takes, he played with his nieces like a child. Then he (Tom) came back to work with an unbelievable professionalism. He was exhausted but remained smiling, polite, nice, patient, and professional. This guy is a blessing for the special effects technicians but I know all the actors aren’t like him (laughs).

Tom Welling Character: Clark Kent
Show: Smallville (http://www.buddytv.com/tvshow/Smallville.aspx)
There have been a few actors given the honor of portraying Clark Kent, aka Superman, and some would argue that Tom Welling has been the best. It takes a special combination of talent and physicality to play a superhero, and Welling has proved to be the perfect actor for Superman.

Hi,

I really enjoy all your pics you guys and have been meaning to join in when I noticed your posts about the guy who keeps posting "questionable encounters" with Tom and friends.
Thanks Serene.

I know very well how annoying people can be to actors sometimes.

I understand and respect why Tom values his privacy so much.

So I have my suspicions. :whatever:

So you guys picked up on it too that the odds are its the same guy. I was on the fence at the K-site for a sec because I'm a Vancouver girl and he yanked my loyality chain but that's over. He mentions in posts on the K-Site and HNR being in Richmond which is a suburb of Vancouver so I think he's busted.

I'd love to just ignore people like that because they have to have some weird complex to think of these stories and love the attention it brings them. The post on HNR with his photos of the girl did me in and I couldn't believe that the mod. was encouraging the guy. I've posted my suspicions on both sites and maybe....just maybe he'll get the message that SV fans (especially TW fans) are not so easily taken in. Sorry this **** is unhappily from my neck of the woods.

Hey Sunflower welcome to the Hype!

That guy is just totally weird, and I think he's also someone that used to post at Sweet, who was always spewing the same sort of nonsense. The fact that he is so up himself, makes me disblieve him even more.

I was in Vancouver this last July, and I so love it up there. Easily a city I could migrate to and feel right at home. I actually stayed in Burbank, and whilst the hotel I stayed at has accomodated Smallville guest stars in the past, I didnt see any on my visit. :csad:

I went through a pretty swanky part of town, we actually got lost, but do you think that's where all the stars live. I cant remember the name of it. It had me curious, I must say.

Have you yourself ever encountered any stars roaming about town?

Hey you visited my hometown! I like you already. You got lost? Sorry to hear that but if you got lost at least you got lost in the nice part of town and not skid row. Describe it a little to me and I'll help you out? Tall buildings by the ocean and sea walls? Lots of big mansions? Most importantly - which way were the mountains when you were lost? So you stayed in Burbank(sorry -sp?) which I think you mean is Burnaby which is a suburb of east of Vancouver where the Smallville Studios are.

Yeah there is always alot of shows filming in Vancouver all the time and you do get used to seeing all the trucks and them setting up. They take a long time so usually you would have to have really good timing to see anything or anyone. I remember seeing 21 Jump Street and X-files shooting when I was going to school which was neat. Usually you see alot of actors that you know you've seen them in different TV shows in supporting roles but you have no idea who they are but they are on TV alot.

You're right, I do mean Burnaby. I've been speaking with my hubbie this last week about Burbank, and I guess I had that on my mind. :cwink:

We were coming out of the city back towards Burnaby, and I think we were meant to be on Route, gosh I'm guessing here, 79 but we ended up on 79A. However, we did find ourselves in this really lovely suburb with beautiful big houses, lots of high fences, and big over hanging trees.

You are so funny but of course we couldnt help ourselves if we were walking down the street and saw him shooting a scene. Sigh. I kick myself because I hear from friends and collegues that they shoot alot at UBC (University of British Columbia) and I used to study and work there. Grrr. When they were doing the Metropolis U stuff it was totally UBC. The UBC library stands in for their dorm.

Anywho...what you are studying sounds like fun and you'll really enjoy Vancouver, mountains and islands for that as well. Hope you like seals, dolphins and orcas because you see lots of them. Summers are not usually that rainy in Vancouver so you should be okay. Now November is another matter and I don't know if you have heard of the really bad rain and wind storms that that have been plagueing Vancouver the past 2 weeks with even a boil water warning in effect. This is more evidence that Tom is indeed 6'4".... There was an interview with Justin Hartley (http://nwitimes.com/articles/2006/11/24/entertainment/entertainment/85f9fbc2090116368625722d00777e91.txt) over on the Northwest Indiana News website where he talked about Tom and his height and weight:

The 6-foot-3-inch actor cheerfully volunteers that co-star Tom Welling, who portrays future Superman Clark Kent, physically outguns him on every level.

"Tom's got me by about an inch (and) outweighs me by about 35 pounds. The way they shoot it, they try not to make me look too small next to him, which is good," he laughs.

aw avid, why the lack of interest?I'm not Avid, but I understand where she's coming from. The show is about Clark, and to a secondary extent, Lex. But if you read the synops, it's really about "young Superman." Now, I *TOTALLY* understand the need for tertiary characters, but I get a little possessive *cough*jealous*cough* when another character starts steeling Clark's thunder. It may not be an accurate view given actual screen time, but it's been my perception nonetheless.

I guess Static really drove it home. If the ep was Clark-centric, I don't think folks would be pissing and moaning so much. But Static REALLY did a number on us Clark fans. :(

and i guess i have to see that justin interview to believe it,since i saw an interview of tom saying that he is almost 6 foot 3,heheheheHe must be used to downplaying his height. Apparently, 6'4" (or thereabouts) is a little too tall for male models (they have a difficult time fitting into average sized suits, which are designed for averaged sized men), so models are told to fib in order to get the gig. James has the skinny on that angle.

This topic comes up every few months (sorta like the why-isn't-Batman-on-SV question LOL), and each time, I lean more towards believing Welling is closer to 6'4" than 6'3".

This is an old picture, but it serves its purpose. At a documented 6'4", Jonathan Schneider is a very big dude, but Welling still makes him look small...

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/extinction.jpg

Now, I'm ALL for showing off how "Supermanly" Welling actually is, but the SV directors have to be wicked careful how they block him in shots. His height and size can be VERY noticeable, often to the point of distraction...

nobody knows for sure how taller he is,that is why i`m gonna trust his words on that. That was kind of my point. He's been downplaying his height for a while; it started back in his modeling days. That said, there was a very recent interview where the interviewer referenced his height (6'4") in print. I can't remember which one it was though. Figures. Anybody? Avid? Trip? 'Rene? James? Kaboom,i saw the new adv of lois and clark and Jonathan had a heart problem but he was still a life.

In SV continuity, Jonathan's dead. Gone. If he's "brought back," it will only be for a flash back or dream sequence. SV has gone off the deep end with a lot of story arcs *cough*witches*cough*, but Jonathan is six feet under; he's not coming back to life.

since i never read the comics,i don't know if he died or he is still alive!Depends which continuity. There is no such thing as one definitive Superman canon, despite the fanboywanking to the contrary. LOL ;)

I dont know why they try to play that down. SUPERMAN should be bigger. He's a BIGGER than life character.

I think the GA is the new AG/MM's "golden" boy. They are trying to pimp him in every possible way.

With my lack of interest in all things Justin Hartley...

Lack of interest shared here.

Thanks for the pics, AgentPat. Yes, I'm convinced Tom is used to downplay his height. As for that interview, there were two recent ones actually where the 6'4'' were mentioned. I'll check my files. :yay:

I really like Ollie/JH.
But I'll really like him more in his own show when he's not taking screentime away from Clark/Tom. :D

I just read an interesting spec posted about that too... I have to run to work now, but I'll dig it up and share it later.

I was referring to mass, not height in that shot.

In SV continuity, Jonathan's dead. Gone. If he's "brought back," it will only be for a flash back or dream sequence. SV has gone off the deep end with a lot of story arcs *cough*witches*cough*, but Jonathan is six feet under; he's not coming back to life.

Depends which continuity. There is no such thing as one definitive Superman canon, despite the fanboywanking to the contrary. LOL ;)

this is smallville where any thing can happen LOL
this is smallville the show about the younger years of superman before he meet lois at the daily planet ( that was told to us before season 4,hehehehe )

before he putted the costume.

my guess is : at the final episode,a lot of characters are gonna be mindwarp LOL and some people will be raised from the dead.

since I DON`T REMEMBER is smallville`s motto.

or clark will found out somewhere in this season that there is some other dimension where he can go and save his father :oldrazz:

or he will wake up as superman in his bed and realised the he was just dreaming about smallville....nothing was real.

great idea of smallville 2,the real childhood of superman.

ehm,never mind,i`m just confusing meself.

He must be used to downplaying his height. Apparently, 6'4" (or thereabouts) is a little too tall for male models (they have a difficult time fitting into average sized suits, which are designed for averaged sized men), so models are told to fib in order to get the gig. James has the skinny on that angle.....Now, I'm ALL for showing off how "Supermanly" Welling actually is, but the SV directors have to be wicked careful how they block him in shots. His height and size can be VERY noticeable, often to the point of distraction...

For example KK is alot shorter then TW and I read that she used to have to stand on boxes when they did kissing scenes. I agree that they would have to set up the shots properly as well. Tom also resorts to not wearing regular shoes and instead wear flip flips so that its easier when they are filming shots of him with the other actors and the doesn't have to do anything physical.

After what Justin says....imagine when they TW directed himself in "Hydro" when Clark wears GA's costume and if he is bigger then Justin....I can't wait to see TW in green leather.

Take a look:

My absolute favorite smiley.Hulk has a better one. It kinda looks like this http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/what.gif but the dude shakes his head in a "WTF?!" motion. I wish I had saved it when I first saw it. LOL

What Pat said.Yeah, we're on the same page when it comes to Clarky. Like I once said, separated at birth, and all that jazz. *giggle*

Yes, I'm convinced Tom is used to downplay his height. As for that interview, there were two recent ones actually where the 6'4'' were mentioned. I'll check my files.Any luck, Whiteflag?

I really like Ollie/JH.
But I'll really like him more in his own show when he's not taking screen time away from Clark/Tom.It does tend to seem that way, even if it's not true. Clark has actually been IN many of the scenes with Oliver, so I guess it's just a perception thing. As a means of comparison, I don't remember there being that much off show hubbub about Marsters, and he actually deserved to be pimped. He's a great actor!

this is smallville where any thing can happen LOLNo argument there. But I'm telling ya, they're NOT gonna raise Jonathan from the dead. It would ruin the whole POINT of his death in the first place. Besides having to keep in step with the film franchise (don't get me started on that LOL), Clark had to learn that he can't change fate. He's not a god, and despite all his great powers, he can't save everybody. That's the ONLY thing Superman will beat himself up over (metaphorically speaking) later in life........

*Kang* *kang* *kang*!!!

http://www.patcostello.com/smileys/dinnerbell.jpg

Oh fiddlesticks. Now look what you've gone and done. :p

(I'm just messin' with ya.) :D

For example KK is alot shorter then TW and I read that she used to have to stand on boxes when they did kissing scenes...Not just kissing scenes, but any half shot. Even when they're walking together. Ever see that TV Guide outtake from Covenant, where Welling trips over the boards Kreuk walked along next to the SUV? Hysterical stuff. (It's on YouTube.)

This shot says it all:

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/hidden7.jpg

I agree that they would have to set up the shots properly as well. Tom also resorts to not wearing regular shoes and instead wear flip flips so that its easier when they are filming shots of him with the other actors and the doesn't have to do anything physical.Yup, I'm aware of that. I think he was wearing sandals opposite Marsters in the scenes outside MetU during Aqua, to no avail of course...

http://www.patcostello.com/temp/aqua6.jpg

(Marsters is 5'11)

After what Justin says....imagine when they TW directed himself in "Hydro" when Clark wears GA's costume and if he is bigger then Justin....I can't wait to see TW in green leather.Oh, trust me, I can't WAIT to see that scene.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I always saw that hallway scene from Hidden as Clark being larger than life. It has the subtlety of a sledgehammer; there must have been some visual metaphor going on there beyond Lana just being surprised to see Clark again. Earlier in the ep, Clark scoots down to kiss Lana in the bedroom scene. Clark was human and on equal levels with Lana (so to speak). He even stubbed his toe. At the end however, he scoops her off the ground and brings her up to "his level." Again, if only metaphorically.

Hidden was just all kinds of wonderful. I'm in awe of how great an ep it was.

And this episode was probably one of the best, if not THE best, of the series. In season 1, we had the Pilot, in season 2 we had Rosetta, in season 3 we had Exile and Memoria, in season 4 we had Transference and Spell (oops, I slipped while typing)... I mean Commencement, in season 5 we had Hidden and Reckoning. I eagerly await the "Hidden" of season 6. We've waited long enough methinks.

Good points and great insight! When Clark had no powers and stubbed his toe in his bedroom...well the whole scene was soooo cute. They were just kids in love and sooo happy that you knew that trouble was in the air.

The end was so damn powerful! The look on Clark's face alone when he walks into the hall and turns and looks at Lana. Wow!

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/6668/hiddenhr562mb2.jpg

And when he lifts her into his arms, to me he is the reluctant superman now. Look at the lost expression on his face even though he has his Lana in his arms.

Your right...Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent is THE BEST!

I remember reading this article that appeared the Seattle Times July 19 2006, written by a high school student from Oregon on Smallville vs the Superman movie.

Here's a quote:

"Smallville," unlike the big-screen "Superman," manages to touch the viewer intimately, and makes you want to reach out to Clark and make his life OK — because he deserves it more than anybody else."

who cares if he visits sick kids? Is he running for President or something?

Any account I've ever read of people meeting the guy, they've only said good things and he's more than willingly particpated in stuff for the Christopher Reeve Foundation and John Glover's Alzheimers Walk if thats what you mean?yes it is and when you say particpate I assume you mean he does more then signs things. That is what I am looking to see if he does those things. Does he go and meet people himself other then just sign things.

When Tom does something for charity, you most likely will only find a short clip in the newspaper from the benefactor thanking him for his donation and help.

He's not one to try and gain publicity from his generosity as he is a very quiet and private person and respects the privacy of others.

you mean like does he go to hospitals with a camera crew right around the time one of his DVD's are going to be released? I'd say no.

What type of work does Welling do outside of SV? I mean does he go and visit sick people in the hospital and stuff because I've never read about these things here.LOL! Where do you come up with this stuff? Talk about out of the blue.

We don't really hear about Welling's extracurricular activities - especially those of a charitable nature - but I know he does them. Unfortunately for us fans though, the cameras are rarely there to capture the moment; we just hear about it after the fact.

There was a blurb in the Boston Globe last summer about Welling funding some graduate's trip to Africa to teach AIDS awareness. I think Northeastern Univ contacted the paper with the info or something along those lines 'cause it really came out of left field. I don't think anybody would have heard about it otherwise, which makes you wonder what else he does that's hasn't been made public.

James probably has a better handle on this stuff as he keeps his eyes peeled for such news, but it is hard knowing about something if it's not reported. We do hear about the charity golf game and occasional horse riding competitions he attends, Glover's Alzheimer's drives, and the Reeve's Foundation involvement, simply because other celebs often attend those functions. But for the most part, Welling is a very private dude, so I would imagine that mentality extends to his personal charitable efforts as well. It's kind of nice that way though because it's like he's living the character in spirit. :)

Amazingly... shortly after... a feral cat decided to move her two kittens into my garage (I live in a rural setting)... they were SO adorable... so I invited them inside. They are so uncomplicated (no pills, SubQ fluids, worry) and immensely entertaining!

I know we were talking about this recently, but I cant remember in what thread it was, and since this one had slipped to almost the bottom of the second page, I'll revive it by posting it here. Its a tally of the actor/character screen time.

BTW I snagged it from TWOP. :woot:

Clark: 143m, 6s (9 eps)
Lex: 100m, 3s (9 eps)
Lana: 83m, 38s (9 eps)
Chloe: 75m, 54s (9 eps)
Lois: 51m, 13s (6 eps)
Oliver: 65m, 37s (5 eps)

She also noted, including credits, that Subterranean only ran for 39.38 minutes. Quite a shorty.

those stats should shut the greenarrowville guys up. the plots have revolved around him in a couple of eps but clark has definitely been at the forefront of the investigation

Well, most episodes are about 42 minutes long so over 5 eps he's been in all of about one and a half total.

Oliver: 65m, 37s (5 eps)Interesting. Good to see Clark way out in front, but damned if it seemed that way based on the eps. Maybe we're just used to him being in almost every scene, and now with all of the extra characters, not to mention the shift in 'ships (Lana being with Lex vs. Clark changes the relative screen times for each character quite a bit), we're feeling deprived? Well... I've been feeling deprived LOL. Subterranean made up for it, though I wish it was a little better of an episode. Hopefully the next batch will up the stats to their more typical percentages. :D

I think it's the angle and lighting of the pic, more than anything else. There are some weird shadows there.

By the look of it, that picture couldn't be older than a couple of years. Probably it was taken around the same time as this one:

Certainly a possibility, though I don't remember his neck looking that bony even in early photos. I agree about his appearance being fluid - a slight change to his haircut, how much light is on his eyes, etc., makes a huge difference even within a scene.
