not having an open container on the subway? People drink soda and snapple or gatorade all the damn time.. but now if they get caught the get fined or arrested.

How about now in the winter... the cops gonna bust people now who wanna keep warm with coffee or cocoa in rush hour? It's stupidity.

The changing subway cars? The cops must love being next to a smelly ass homeless person and endure the ride home.

These rules are stupid... and any cop out to bust someone for these things is a real @ass bag.

i live in queens but i go to school upstate so..

WTF?????

WTFF HAPPENED/??? WHY?

Pardon the pun, but a few rotten apples ruin it for everyone else. I cannot count how many times i've seen people eating chinese food on the trains throwing chicken bones under the seat, or McDonalds and then when they're done boom the bag the BigMac container everything goes right under the seats. How many times have you walked on a train and have your sneaker almost come off because someone spilled coffee or soda and it steaked down the entire train? People are pigs! It pisses me off when I take all my cups or container or whatever I have(I don't particularly eat on the train) and throw them out in the proper places, then I see a bunch of kids spitting sunflower seed shells right on the floor without any disregard. We don't know how to act in society, so rules must be put in place. This is why we can never get rid of the rats, people are pigs. As far as switching cars, I agree with you there, damn bums smelling like 8 year old piss, air conditioning not working, big mouth teens disrespecting everyone, including themselves, cursing and talking real loud. Come to think of it, I hate the trains. This should have been on some kind of rant and rave board.

Equint77
12-08-2005, 08:19 AM
honestly... for the most part at least from my experience... people have been good with their trash on the F train. Sure there's always that one pig but in general... it's a clean train.

Yes rules are good but this is excessive.... as a matter of fact some woman was told by another passenger the other day she could get fined for drinking a soda can. It's insane.

WOLVERINE25TH
12-08-2005, 08:30 AM
I worked fer supermarkets fer 7 years...we all used crates fer our own purposes anyways.

Th' R train's pretty clean usually too. Th' odd piece of trash here or there, only a couple of bums over a few month period. I actually prefer th' subway over buses. There just always seems ta be more room an' ya got options whereas a bus is one area an' yer stuck. Plus, they're actually on time! Perish th' thought. I hate buses.

Don't get me wrong, I was born and raised here in New York, i've been riding the trains for 17 years and I don't think i'd trade it for anything, it's just that, well like I said, a few rotten apples. Yesterday on the L train in the 35 minutes it took for me to get home, in a time span of about 15 minutes, 3 count'em 3 bums walked through begging for money. On a crowded 14th st. platform I saw 2 teenage chicks smoking a cigarette and like I said someone had spilled coffee and it spread nearly the whole length of the car. It's a shame for the rest of us good people that these rules need to be placed, but unfortunately they do need to be.

You are 1000% correct on the bus issue Wolverine! I have to transfer to the 55 bus at Wycoff and Myrtle, the last and first stop on the bus route. You would think there would always be a bus waiting there, but no. It seems like when it's raining the hardest or the coldest day, they take even longer letting the bus line extend nearly a block long. Then the driver gets pissed when people don't step behind the white line, well you dumbass, if you had more busses on time, people wouldn't be trying to squeeze on knowing the next bus won't be coming for another 15 minutes. It really enrages me, which is why I think New Yorkers have a bad reputation to the rest of the country. We're just really annoyed, then we have to deal with a tourist stopping short right in the middle of the sidewalk to take a picture, i'm getting off track, but you get the picture.

Equint77
12-08-2005, 09:08 AM
lol.. I dont' know how you guys do it, especially in winter time.... taking the bus is the last resort.... mainly cause I spend 90% of my time in Manhattan but if I can't take a train I just hop on a cab.

I've never been a bus guy. I hate it. :(

WOLVERINE25TH

Th' B1 was my bus of...choice. When I went to McKinley Jr. High that bus goes there, but me an' my friend found out th' time it takes us to wait fer th' damn thing we could be halfway there walkin'. When I worked up on New Utrecht, same thing. I used to leave work after 12 on Saturdays, an' I'd be lucky if th' damn bus showed up before I made it to 13th Avenue walkin'. (Fer you non-Brooklyn types, you can mapquest th' distance from New Utrecht & 86th to 13th). Hell, there were times I made it to 69th & 13th! Oh, an' let's not forget th' kicker...that I was all th' way home an' NO BUS CAME AT ALL. Stupid crap.

Unfortunately Equint, I have no choice BUT to take the damn bus. I live in what used to be known as a 2 fair zone(GOD bless the metrocard). It would cost me 7 bucks a day to take a cab from my stop to my house. Living in New York, I really can't afford an extra $35 a week. It sucks, but I grin and bear it.

No I hear ya. I don't know... I think I'm just spoiled cause the subway station is down the block from my apartment and the subway station is next to my job in Manhattan. I don't have to walk much either way. And when I'm in the city... either I take the subway or hop a cab to get around.

If I never had to take mass transit again in life, it wouldn't bother me one bit. Hey Wolverine, I hear you on the latenight usses, and what about the weekend busses, holy crap, you'd die of hypothermia waiting for a bus on the weekend in the wintertime.

I worked fer supermarkets fer 7 years...we all used crates fer our own purposes anyways.
As did we (I still remember the tower of Bok Choy), but there was also around 200 unused crates to give back to trucks after milk deliveries.

I could care less about the newly implemented rules, except for 1. The no "legs spreading" rule. That affects me because I have to sit with my legs spread because of my size. They might as well just fine me for being fat and get it over with, because I can't physically sit with my legs closed for longer than 30 seconds.

At least they removed the "no cameras in the subway system" rule. I was able to take some interesting shots before that rule was implimented. I look forward to do so again.

Some unions are a joke, some are great. Just think of it this way; if you were ever in a union situation you'd want them protectin' yer interests too now wouldn't ya? After all, they gotta earn that money garnished from yer pay every check.

Fortunately, I don't need th' subway till next month. Anyplace I need to be I bike to.

Equint77

No I totally understand being taken care of by Unions.. but it just seems every year the Transit workers wanna strike... I'm just sick of reading about it in the papers... sick of hearing "contingency plans".

Just come to an agreement and let me finish out my week in peace. I wish I could ride a bike to work.... but that's a fantasy.. even if it was in Spring.

An' not fer nuttin', keep in mind all th' news reports is th' bad **** 'cause nobody cares about th' good.

Just keep yer eyes open, stay out of dark alleys at night, an' look both ways before crossin'...especially in Manhattan. That's it. All ya need to survive NYC.

As fer this strike, this is basically th' same **** they do every year. They sayd midnight deadline, they go on over th' time, some small strikes here an' there, then by Monday it's all resolved. I'd be impressed if they stray from th' script this year.

Around 60 Thousand dollars... A teacher would need 10-15 years to have that starting salary.

A fairer break of the profits to destroy the city.

How much money will I be compensated for with this strike...absolutely nothing.

Getting a six percent raise instead of a 8 percent raise is truly a horror.

Plus, what of those in the Union...that are content with their jobs & forced to strike or essentialy be scabs. I've been part of that type of union & it doesn't help me.

I'm staying at the Milford Hotel on 8th and 45th, its a decent location, we're surrounded by plays and ****.

I'm in an internat cafe right now trying to get directions to Canal St, going to walk there today, try to visit the Lower East Side, but Max, if your there, whats that place you recommended I check out there? Cant remember.

Saw the tree last night, surrounded by tourists. Feet were frozen, but it wasnt as bad as I thought it was, we saw some dirty snow in Central Park, the taxi van cost $30 from laguardia to the hotel, didn't help that various streets were blocked, preventing us from getting there faster. If anyone has some cool places they can recommend that is relatively close to me, go for it. I forgot where the Virgin store is Max, gonna look that up. Later.

edit: Oh, Union Square is the place, with forbidden planen the the virgin megastore

hey- hmmn
For food, there's Chat-n-Chew (like 16th or 17th, just a block off the square)
For comics, theres Forbidden Planet, which is a block below the Virgin Megastore. THe Virgin isnt awful for music- just corporate.
EDIT: OH- and a block below Forbidden Planet is The Strand- a Reall cool old landmark of a NYC bookstore.

8 or ten blocks below the Virgin, and a block or two eat of there, is Other Music. Good nerdy music store where everyone is a bit of an indie-snob-prick but that's part of the charm.
Its on Lafayette and forth, across the street from a big Tower Records.

two blocks east of Other Music, and 2 blaocks north is St. Mark's Place.
Kim's Underground is cool for music, movies, and some comics.
St. Marks comics is cool for comics.

edit- yeah. but check ot the other places i named too:)

yeah - but equint- are theyreally to blame?
Look at it this way- is it more sensible to hold thousands of people responsible for asking for what they feel is a fair share of their orgnaizations revenues, or to hold a very FEW people responsible (those at the top of the MTA food chain) responsible for not listening to its workers demands? THey CAN afford it, yknow.

Ultimately the best thing for me would be if the fares were a tad lower, the bosses weren't getting quite so rich, and the workers were making maybe a little bit more. But that will never happen, SO siding with the workers, for me, is the best way to change the power distribution.
Siding with management, in this case, is not going to do anything but further their position of power.

Everyone is saying "hey! there are some people who don't even get what the MTA workers are asking for, and you don't here THEM complaining. They're so selfish".
To that i say---"whaa?"
They SHOULD be complaining. we all should. For the most part, we all deserve more than we're given. I can't believe how ready people are to roll over and play dead. Why is everyone so complacent? Why do we view it as 'selfishness' to make demands? Why take the "shut up if you know what's good for you" route? we shouldn't have to.

Seriously, who's selfish? who? a person asking for an 6% raise or a guy at the top who's probably getting millions in tax-sheltered bonuses and other perks?

You've made great points Max... but nothing and I mean NOTHING should warrent work stoppage... especially when it comes to something that makes the city run. Putting their needs ahead of the 7,000,000 people riding public service crosses that line from negotiations to greed. They're not the only ones who are getting the short end of the stick... they're not the only ones being underpaid.. and yeah.. more people should stand up and speak up.. but the reality is you do what you have to do to get through things. The TWU say they understand it's an inconvience, but they don't... they don't see how they're screwing mom and pop shops around the city... they don't see how difficult they make it for free lance employees who work on work day salary... or the people who work at the markets. Much less the larger picture, the city's economy and tourism. In the end WE ALL SUFFER. Where do you think the city is gonna make up this money? The Government? The Moon? Your pockets.. my pockets... the TWU employee's pockets... in the end we're ALL SCREWED.

They could easily negotiate like they did a few years back and still avoid work stoppage... they wanted more leverage so this is just a tact they used to get what they want.. and in the end have compromised the city and it's people during the worst time of the year.

And I'm not siding with the Union or the MTA.... I think they're both jerk offs... I just think holding the city by the balls like this is unneccessary and the TWU knows it.

its true.

But I mean, the strike is really the only potent tool the unions have.

The underlying problem, which i pointed out earlier today, is the bizzare, "not-quite-a-municipal-orgainization-but-sort-of-gets-all-the-benefits-of-one" status currently held by the MTA.
Until something is done there, until they start gettign held accountable, nothing will change.

I work in NYC I know the cost. Manhattan is ridiculous but in Brooklyn & the Bronx 45,000 is pretty good chunk of change.

The MTA has one of the better pension plans, and benefits with a retirment age of 55.

The Union actually wanted their salaries raised they got it.

The largest urban oil spill in North America—in Greenpoint, Brooklyn—is millions of gallons bigger than the Exxon Valdez. Chief Investigator Basil Seggos tells us about the civil suit residents are bringing against three of the world’s major oil companies: ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, and BP Amoco. He's joined by City Council member David Yassky.

turns out it might be up to 17 million gallons spilled over a long period of time, possible starting as early as the 1920's!

I saw that Denio commercial on TV, an' then when I went to go see Hitch it was on just before th' movie started. Why's that important? 'Cause th' commercial features th' Ghostbusters firehouse, an' Hitch started there. Like a double-shot. Not to mention I went to th' school where they hold th' Film Festival. Saw th' Olsen Twins two years ago.

Anyone go to th' motorcycle show? Not a lotta bikes this year, was mostly accessories.

I know I'd listen. Better than the **** they have on it already.

What was the real problem was that NYC Public Schools were not closed today, or even delayed. I had to go to my student teaching only to find out my cooperative teacher absent (along with 59 other teachers) and only 7 of my students showing up in both of my classes. Was not worth waking up this morning.

Definitely looking forward to that, as well as some genuine NY pizza. Which way to Sbarro's?

Kidding, of course.

NY has actually always been my dream city since I was young, but I just never got around to it, mostly because of price. Then I got into France and all that, and NY just sort of got put out of my mind for a while. But now I've got a free place to crash in NY, the french stuff is on the backburner, and I'm rediscovering my excitement over NY. I'm absolutely psyched. The bar prices are probably going to sap out some of that excitement though.
