View Full Version : Old School Fox Kids (1990-1998)
This is my thread dedicated to the discussion of when Fox Kids reigned supreme. It started out in 1990 with great shows, like it's original top show...
Bobby's World. Then had stuff also good like...
Attack of The Killer Tomatoes
Defenders of Dinotron City
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Beetlejuice
Taz-Mania
Then in the early 90's shows were added like...
X-Men
Batman: The Animated Series
Dog City
The Tick
Spider-Man
Power Rangers (even though i despised this show)
Eak The Cat
Animaniacs
Then we got things like Goosebumps. Wasn't realy scary but it helped that Fox Kids originaly had it on Friday afternoons before it got dark rather than sat mornings.
Then mid to late 90's...
Life With Louie (great show)
Ned's Newt
Sam and Max: Freelance Police
Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation ( I know, we dont talk about it)
Silver Surfer
Transformers: beast Machines
Then it started getting bad.
Spider-Man Unlimited
Avengers
Power Rangers : Million different series later befroe disney bought them and took over
Digimon
Godzilla
loads of other stuff
Now the only thing they have is TMNT.
BTW, does anyone know since Fox owns X-Men rights why they didtn produce X-Men: Evolution?
Fox needs to do a comeback, get a new kick ass Spider-Man cartoon. Mayve an animated (good) adaptation of The Avengers, with Justice League quality. Make Fox rule again!
Sorry thats my rant. Remember lots of these great shows/

I slightly remember the Bill and Ted cartoon. I think I even had a tape of it somewhere. I remember enjoying Beetlejuice. The first season or so was great but the show had gone downhill by the time his Jeckyl/Hyde car was introduced. I absolutely loved Sam and Max, I wish that show had continued. And I thought the Silver Surfer looked great, it had tons of potential. It's a shame it was never exploited.

Wow...This thread depressed me pretty quickly.:(
They should have like a FoxKids cartoon series of DVDs. Like every month a new show would be released on DVD or something. You know, back when shows were good.
P.S-Can't believe someone else remembers Dog City! I was beginning to think I was insane and just imagined it or something!

I think that 4Kids and Marvel need to get together and relaunch the Fox Box with some brand new Marvel shows. The anime needs to go (with the exception of TMNT and Winx Club. I like those shows).
I'm currently doing Marvel Spotlight in the Marvel Films forum. And, I think it could be a great launching pad for solo series on the new Marvel Fox Box!

The only channels that show non-anime on saturday mornings are Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and ABC. That Fox Box and ABC Family....Jesus. I remember looking forward to getting up on Saturday to see what new cartoons ABC, CBS, and NBC were preimering for September. Now it's all outsourced.:p

I know. It's all about some crazy anime that all looks alike. What in the world is the difference between Pokeman, Digimon, and Monster Rancher? they look all the same!
Oh.........TMNT are anime. They just happen to have anime shows all around them so they are type cast as one. You would think that some of these channels would realize with the success of superhero movies, that they would relaunch superhero cartoons and get rid of these stupid anime ones. I mean, they are on basically every channel on Saturday morning! I don't even wake up to watch cartoons no more.

Well...........I did like Monster Ranch a little, especially the story of how the bad guy came to be. I just wish they would have beat him some kind of way. Still......all the shows seem to be about calling up things to fight for you.

What you people have got to realise is that these shows are aimed at KIDS (yeah who would have thunk it:rolleyes: ) and KIDS LOVE these shows. Networks don't give a crap about old teens and 20 somethings pining over 80's and 90's cartoons.

Thats because those shows are aimed at specific age groups. Those age groups LIKE the show. So the show is doing what its supposed to do. I dont see why people can't understand that concept. Its like complaining that the telly tubbies hasn't got enough adult jokes:confused:
When I was wathcing stuff like He-man back in the day (which was horribly cheesey btw). I wouldn't want some "older person" whining about how much better cartoons were in his day because I really wouldn't give two craps:up:
Besides there is more to cartoon shows then just super heroes.

As soon as I got home from school, I'd drop my bookbag, run to the chair, click on the TV and the intro was halfwya over when I turned the TV on. I miss those days. Eek was *****in great. Bobbys world rocked, as well as Louie. X-Men was beautiful. Spider-Man was ok sometimes. I liked it and watched it cuz well, I;m a comic dork but I say that with love. Anyway, Fox Kids rocked hard. Hey you forgotten about Carmen Sandiago and Red Planet (even though both shows didn't last long). Anyway, your right about that Fox needs improvement with the shows. Too much anime is taking over and I can't stand it!

Godzilla was hilarous. I can remeber that insane quote"BACK AWAY!" how could he command godzilla?
Sure 3dman27, Red Planet was a four or five part mini-series that fox would re-air every so often for a bit. I actually have a commercial on one old X-Men tape I had from the first season. I cant remember a lot of it, but it wa ssoemthing like this family established a science lab type station on Mars for the govt. and their kids a boy and girl basically found a little alien sidekick creature who didnt talk but was like a cute alien furby type thing. Then someone wanted something from the family and the kids ended up saving everything and everyone. Thats all I remember from it.

History
The Fox Kids Network began in the Fall of 1990 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990), originally headed up by division president Margaret Loesch (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Margaret_Loesch&action=edit) and airing programming originally for 30 minutes per day Monday-Friday and three hours on Saturday morning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_morning_cartoons). In 1991 it expanded to 90 minutes on weekdays and four hours on Saturday Mornings. In 1992 the network eventually expanded to 2 and a half hours per day during the week. In 1993 Fox Kids was up to 3 hours per day of children's programming -- some affiliates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affiliates) airing all three hours in succession (generally those with morning newscasts) from 2-5 PM, and some others (those without news operations) showing the first hour in the morning and the latter two in the afternoon. Half a dozen of the Fox stations with evening Newscasts that opted to take Fox Kids ran it earlier in the afternoon 1-4 PM. (examples KTVI 2 St Louis, 10 WALA Mobile, 2 KHON Hawaii)
In 1996 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996), it merged with Haim Saban's Saban Entertainment, Inc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saban). In 1999 the Fox Kids programming weekday block was trimmed to 2 hours along with an additional 30 minute educational show called "The Magic School Bus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Magic_School_Bus)". In 2000 affiliates were all given options to push the block up to 2-4 PM instead of 3-5 PM. In the 6 or so markets with 5 PM Newscasts that carried Fox Kids (such as St Louis and New Orleans for example) they already were running the block an hour early back in 1996. In October 2001, Saban and News Corp sold the group to The Walt Disney Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walt_Disney_Company), at which time Fox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Broadcasting_Company) discontinued the daytime children's programming, giving the time back to their affiliates. It maintained a Saturday morning schedule until 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002), when it gave the time to 4Kids Entertainment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4Kids_Entertainment), producers of Pokémon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_%28anime%29).
The Walt Disney Company dissolved the U.S. Fox Kids brand in 2001, and it was not until 2004 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004) when they started their own brand, known as Jetix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetix). However, the worldwide Fox Kids, are slowly now being converted to Jetix, but in Latin America and Europe the rebranding has already taken place.

I miss those days sooooo much. The early 90's line up was my favorite I could watch those shows all the way through, still would watch them all except for Power Rangers. I was thinking last Saturday about how I used love watching Saturday morning cartoons and now the only show I watch is Batman, but I'm getting sick of that already.

what was your favorite episode mine was "fists of furry"[yes thats the correct title it was a takeoff on themovie title fists of fury] the story guest starred cynthia rothrock whom eek recruited to help his friend sharkey the sharkdog learn martial arts without ending up in the hospital
That one with "Shark Doggy Dog". HILARIOUS!
Now that this thread has been resurrected, I must ask if anybody has a link to some old Fox kids commercials? You know the ones, "Fox kids is cool" or "every body knowwwws, it's on fox", or any of those? I LOVE those. I'm looking for them in Windows media viewer if possible.

Oh, and(one more post then i'll leave this thread alone for awhile lol), I just wanted to say that I think Fox kids was the best block of children's programming ever created. I mean, it was very diverse, and usually very smartly written and(with some exception) alot of it could be enjoyed by people of all ages(not just children).
I remember some of my favorites on the network being:
X-men
Batman
Tiny Toon Adventures(one of the best "funny" cartoons EVER)
Animaniacs(ditto)
Eekstravaganza
Bobby's World(i have TWO bobby dvds)
Life with Louie
The Tick
C-bear and Jamal
Beetleborgs(big bad AND metallix)
Power Rangers
I never count Beetlejuice because originally it was an ABC cartoon. They just showed reruns on Fox kids.
But yeah, cartoons nowadays aren't as huge a deal. Getting up on Saturday morning used to be an EVENT that you'd look forward to all week but now, it's just like,"yay, I can sleep in" and I don't think it's just cause many of us are now much older. It's cause there is simply nothing there anymore to wake up too.
I remember getting up every Saturday morning to watch REal Ghostbusters and new adventures of Winnie the Pooh on ABC or Ninja Turtles and Garfield on CBS. There's simply NOTHING of that quality on anymore.
Agreed. Fox Kids was just a pivital point in the history of Saturday morning. It's a shame kids these days will never know it.
I too would love to see any old Fox Kids commercials if nayone has some. I have every episode of X-Men on taoe form their original airdates and they are jam packed with commercials, the sweepstakes, fox kids radio and magazine ads, tv shows, then regular commercials that are jsut awsome because they are form through out the course of the 90's.
I just don't have the stuff to be able to transfer, nor would i know how to anyway.

not many people over 8 like those shows and most kids all like superheros, take the movies, like spider-man 2 you went into the theater and there were people from 4 to like 85 all enjoying the movie whereas if you went into a pokemon movie there would be like 4-10 year olds and their parents who really dont want to be there :p so with superhero TV shows they might be able to get the little kids and us teens and adults :)
Yeah but its not as if they can get superhero tv shows right all the time. Do I need to bring up spider-man unlimited? Besides, as is always the case a change will be made and then viewwers will sprint to their pcs ready to ***** to the whole world about it.

I didn't realize 1998 is old school?
It is pretty much old school interms of TV almost. It also means that Fox Kids changd after the 1998 season. The best shows ran during hat period.
I grew up on those shows since I was born in 1992. I was inot these shows before the comics. Much pf what I knew came from the TV shows.
Well Fox Kids pretty much revolutionized Saturday mornings with their programs. It grew from 1990 on. Adding more shows, animated and live-action. Creating a magazine, sweepstakes, clever commercials and such. A Fox Kids radio show which lasted for about seven years, that's pretty good. It also made weekday afternoon and een mronigns for cartoons the norm. Before and after school and all Saturday morning, you could find some of the best entertainment on Fox Kids.
I'm sorry to keep bringing this thread up, I just keep finding some stuff on it and I have been going through old tapes labling them etc. And it just brings up so many great childhood memories.

Badass.
Animaniacs was on Kids Wb and Beetlejuice was on Nickelodeon.
Animaniacs premiered on Fox Kids in Sept 1993 and mvoed to Kids WB in 1995 when Wb made its own sat morning line up.
Beetlejuice was originally on ABC, then went to Fox Kids in it's second season while it also aired on ABC making it one of the first animated shows ever to run on two networks at once.
Reruns would air few years later on Nickelodeon.

I remember Defenders of Dynatron City.It was that toon that featured this team of superheroes that got their powers in strange accidents.I loved that cartoon. It didn't last long though.
The 90's X-Men has always been my favorite.
Here are my other favorites:
Batman:The Animated Series:up:  If anyone here has Boomerang, you can see BTAS at 12:00 midnight.Followed by STAS at 12:30.
Tiny Toon Adventures. This toon is STILL funny to this day.An instant classic.
Spider-Man,imo was good but the writer of the series(John Semper)took too many liberties with certain storylines. The Secret Wars thing was mediocre and barely even scratched at the surface of the characters that appeared in the comic series.

Actually it ended in Aug 2002 before it turned into FOx Box. I just added more like Galidor, Riping Friends, Transformers: Robots In Disguise, Power Rangers: Time Force.
So technically, i should change the threat title to. 1990-2002

It'll never happen. Fox Box is too busy importing anime from Japan. Seriously.
And losing it as well - Now as Jetix they no longer have the contracts to Digimon... or Sailor Moon, but as we all know Toei pulled that in 2004... Not even showing S or SuperS... they obviously havent heard of this:
"DON'T START SOMETHING UNLESS YOU PLAN ON FINISHING IT!"
That applies to Toei Animation and Fox Kids. Toei were the ones to pull the rights from Sailor Moon, then saying haha u suck u ain't got Sailor Moon's 5th series and we ain't giving it to you although we gave it to every other ******* country in the world, ur not getting it hahaha!

Remember lots of these great shows/
I remember those shows... some I loved, others I ignored.

I remember those shows... some I loved, others I ignored.
The one I ignored most is Spider-Man Unlimited coz it changed everything from the TAS - especially the creation of Venom and Carnage. Venom also allied himslef with Carnage, and Carnage called Venom a brother.

Now that ain't right.
They forgot to list Tiny Toons among the early 1990s shows.
I despise Beast Machines. An insult to everything I loved about Beast Wars.

yep for a while they had x men on at 2pm when the kids where in school- i assume for the nostalgic student crowd then it went to 6pm but clashed with x men evolution on toonami now its on at 9.30pm when most of the young kids are asleep. i 'd rather watch that than some prime time. the show needs to return where it was in 2003- 8pm just before the little kids go to bed and when all us are sitting in front of the box.
