Box office news for the Memorial Day Weekend:

Daily Variety

Wolverine packs a wallop
$120 mil for explosive 'X-Men'
By BEN FRITZ

"X-Men: The Last Stand" used Wolverine's claws this weekend to slice through plenty of domestic box office records.

Fox's superhero sequel grossed an astounding $120.1 million over four days. "X-Men" beat the previous Memorial Day weekend record -- $96 million for the official second weekend of "Shrek 2" in 2004 -- in just three days.

Pic's Friday-Sunday gross of $103.1 million is the fourth-highest opening weekend of all time, behind only those of "Spider-Man," "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" and "Shrek 2."

Opening-day gross of $45.5 million is the best Friday in Hollywood history and the second best single day, behind only "Sith's" $50 million opening Wednesday.

"X-Men" bow was the biggest of 2006, beating the $77.1 million "Da Vinci Code" opening by Saturday.

Foreign estimates for Monday weren't available, but through Sunday, "X-Men" had a worldwide take of $179.2 million -- very strong, but well behind "Da Vinci's" $231.8 million worldwide debut the previous weekend...

"Over the Hedge" held on very well for its second frame, but "The Da Vinci Code" was caught in the mutant steamroller and dropped a sizable 56%.

While "X-Men: the Last Stand" was tracking strongly and industryites had high expectations, few expected it to be this big, easily surpassing "X2's" opening gross of $85.6 million in early May 2003.

Pic averaged $27,947 over three days at 3,690 playdates.

Fox distribution prexy Bruce Snyder boasted that an average that high is usually the province of a hit arthouse pic playing 10 theaters. "For us to do $120 million while 'Da Vinci' and 'Over the Hedge' are both working, all I can say is wow," he said.

Only negative news may be the actioner's sizable Friday-Saturday drop of 29%. Most pics grow from Friday to Saturday, or fall only slightly, given the advantage of matinees. Though it's explained in part by $5.9 million from midnight screenings Thursday night, such a big slump usually indicates poor word of mouth. Also, Sunday's $25.5 million gross was about $4 million less than the studio was estimating that morning.

A big second frame decline is thus likely. But with nearly $200 million in domestic grosses by next weekend a virtual lock, Fox execs won't be shedding too many tears.

More likely, they'll be talking to their partners at Marvel about the next step for the franchise, since "Last Stand" was supposed to be the final film in a trilogy.

"The first reaction, which we should discard, is here comes 'X-Men 4,' " said Marvel studios topper Avi Arad. "We're working on 'Wolverine,' which is definitely a continuation, and we have a very interesting script about a young Magneto."

As for "Code," after a four-day gross of $43 million, adaptation has a very healthy cume of $145.5 million domestically.

Over three days, pic had a per-play average of $9,057 at 3,754 theaters.

Tom Hanks starrer grossed $124.9 million worldwide this frame, bringing global cume to a massive $465 million.

"We're on the way to half a billion dollars (worldwide) next weekend," noted Sony distribution prexy Rory Bruer. "You can't be anything but happy about that."

The only pics that didn't seem to feel the heat from "X-Men" were those aimed at tots. "Over the Hedge" had a very healthy hold, dropping only 30% from its $38.5 million bow. DreamWorks Animation toon grossed $35.3 million over four days, bringing total take to $84.4 million. Strong legs puts "Over the Hedge" on a pace similar to that of 2004's "Shark Tale," which cumed $160.8 million.

It will likely see a big drop in two weeks, however, when Disney/Pixar toon "Cars" opens...

Overall, the frame was up 4% from last year's Memorial Day, according to Nielsen EDI. Year-to-date, 2006 box office is leading 2005 by 3%.

Triplet, that is NOT how cyclops died. in fact, it was the opposite. Cyclops killed Jean Grey. in the original story, after the phoenix goes mad and kills hundred of worlds, jean grey is briefly able to reassert herself and pleads with cyclops to kill her or she'll never be stopped. cyclops, is then faced with the dillemma, at which point he kills jean grey. it is beautiful, tragic, andd the greatest x-men story ever told, imo. Needless to say, the movie ruined it.

let's face facts, the Dark Phoenix Saga would never have translated well into a live action movie. The plot was much too far fetched to be set in the X movie universe. I dont know why people are acting so surprised that they got a watered down version of it? Thats something you shouldve known going in.

That being said, Singer made Wolverine the "star" of the X-Men, so Ratner wasnt breaking any new ground here with having Wolverine taking his place killing Jean, plus his hand was forced by not having James MArsden available for most of filming. Had Marsden been available I think he wouldve had a much more prominent role in X3. As it is, his scenes were filmed at the very end of shooting when he got back from OZ shooting Superman.

The fact is that unless you are an X-Men loyalist, you probably wouldn't even know that the story was watered down. Knowing that now, I can see where her story (as portrayed in the movie) would disappoint those familiar with the actual comic canon. Looking at it as someone who was completely unaware though... I didn't have a problem with the multiple story elements (Phoenix, the Cure) in the movie. One thing that does stand out is how open-ended all the storylines are - which can be frustrating - but knowing full-well that this is a saga that will continue as long as the money keeps pouring in, that's not really a surprise either.

That being said, Singer made Wolverine the "star" of the X-Men,
Looking at the box office figures, it seems like that was a pretty smart business decision. Fanboys alone would not have carried this movie to those kinds of numbers.

watered down phoenix saga is not the problem, and i can deal with that. my disagreement really is that every character takes a back seat to wolverine.

having wolverine kill jean is akin to making a movie about the death of superman, but having batman kill superman instead of doomsday, because batman is the "coolest character ever"

And for the record, I dont hate the new Superman movie, I hate the arrogant fans of the new movie, but thats another debate. The movie itself I'm mostly apathetic about and just dont want to see the character set back decades, after all the good will that's been built up recently. However, I wont shy away from being critical of it where I feel it's weak, which most of it's "fans" seem incapable of doing, and just seem fit to take anything that Singer and Co are gonna throw at them.Thats how most people feel about SR and SV. But anyways Hulk still think the Pistons will win?

Really IMO X3 was trash they rushed that movie to get back at Singer for doing SR. Singer told them he would be happy to do X3 after he is done with Superman Returns but they didn't like that. So they went a head and rushed the movie and then killed off one of the main players at the start of the movie because they were still upset about him doing Superman Returns as well. Really I see this movie as a big F U to Singer because they were mad that he left them to do another movie. The only bright spot of this movie for me was a Trailer of another Superhero who I will not say.

Hiya Tony v2.0. :)This was my name in the first place. Well really it was Ultimate Superman when DC said they were going to have an Ultimate line then they changed it to All-Star so my name changed to All-Star Superman and then I told the mods I might want my name to be Tony because people kept using the term ASS which was fun but I grew tired of it after a while so they changed it before I could give the okay and they wouldn't change it back. So as Tony I was mad and angery that they changed my name and wouldn't give me back my old name (hint why my posting changed over that years period of time) but all is good now and Superman has Returned just like another Superman will on 6-28-06. :D But most of you don't remember me as All-Star only the long time posters like Pat, Hulk, Triplet, Muscles, etc do.

Question I see many people review X-Men 3 and DC in here I am wondering are we going to be doing the same thing for Superman Returns or not? Because IMO I think that we shouldn't and should review it in its right forum and if you dont like the one at the hype do it over at Blue Tights. I just feel this would cut down on the fights here and makes the mods job alittle more simple. Because if I am not mistaken people kept running to the mods to keep anything having to do with SR out of here so I think we should follow that rule and not review the movie here or post clips of how well it is doing.

The best place to discuss X-Men is in the X-Men forums, just like the best place to discuss SR is in the SR forums. That said, folks here really don't care one way or another about X-Men. It's just another summer popcorn movie. Discussion has been limited to things like box office tallies and whether people enjoyed the film. Arguments with SV fans are unlikely to ensue simply because there's no preexisting conflict between characters, actors, or story. Basically, the properties are completely unrelated. Furthermore, there's no preset moratorium about discussion of X-Men here, just like nobody has complained about the amount of comic book discussion that has taken place, or chatter about James Bond, Spider-Man, Hulk, Batman and various other television series - all of which have separate forums on the Hype.

There's no great mystery for why SV and SR discussion should be kept as far away from each other as physically possible. Mods here would rather mix bleach and ammonia; at least the chlorine gas would take out both sides and there'd be peace in the aftermath. :p

the article was mainly concerned with X-men, Batman, and that movie. But it was more a commentary on the role of super powers, secret identities, and hiding what one can do. its true for any minority, especially those that may feel persecuted.

the flaw in the argument, is that Superman is celebrated for being different, whereas mutants are persecuted for their powers.

But all super-heroes, by definition are different, and to classify all of them as closet-gays just isnt logical or supported by evidence. one cannot cast with such a broad stroke.

however, throw in an openly gay director (singer), an openly gay actor (ian mckellan), and one who may or may not be in closet (spacey) and obviously the topic comes up, is open to debate, and can be molded for use to champion whatever cause the proponent is seeking to advocate.

my view: a person either enjoys or dislikes the characters, relates or is indifferent for their own personal reasons, and there is nothing inherently wrong/ or inherently right for one's motivating factors in making those selections.

if a teenage boy in glasses and pimples who has no friends finds solace in cyclops, thats great. if a closet-gay enjoys superman because of the empowering role superman has in his fictional universe, that is equally fine.
The point is, these stroies are written mainly to appeal to masses, so obviously the artists are trying to capture generic themes that the target audience can relate to. And to be frank, who in this world has never felt isolated/disempowered/persecuted at some point?

JackMercy

Though its not just Superman they are saying all Super-heroes are gay.

No, the article isn't saying anything of the sort.

The article is discussing how a certain intepretation of the film by a certain audience -- depending on the content of the actual film -- could affect the film's box office and critical performance.

Geeze... it's amazing what's out there. Check THIS one out (put a pot of coffee on first.)
http://www.ejumpcut.org/currentissue/SmallvilleFans/text.html

It's one helluva read!

For those easily scared away by LOTS of text, here's a few excerpts:

Regarding identity and the disguise:

It is important to note that instead of creating a show about Superman, the writers of Smallville created a show about Clark Kent. Popular culture critic Gary Engle writes that in the basic Superman myth, adopting the disguise of Clark Kent "is first and foremost a moral act," since the false identity "adds to Superman’s powers the moral guidance of a Smallville upbringing" (85). Kent is "the consummate figure of total cultural assimilation," essentially a transplanted immigrant (alien) who must blend into his surroundings in order to protect the world and the people closest to him (85). Though Engle is writing about pre-Smallville Superman, the very fact that his discussion works so tidily for The WB’s interpretation of the character indicates the extent to which the producers anticipated the character's applicability to The WB’s formula of youth-targeted, moralistic shows. Clark’s overwhelming morality is traditionally attributed to his small town, nuclear family upbringing, and Smallville takes this idea as a narrative backbone in the tradition of family-oriented WB programming. DC Comics President Jenette Kahn insists that in her notes to the show she emphasizes

"it is because he was found by Ma and Pa Kent, and because they are raising him in the way they are and giving him these true values in the American grain and this sense of unconditional love, that he grows to be an exemplary figure" (Quoted in Hinson, 10).

Regarding "filler" episodes:

It should come as no great surprise that this balance among character development, mytharc,[6] and monsters of the week has enabled the show to pick up quite a few fans of The X-Files (1993-2002). As Reeves, Rodgers, and Epstein write in respect to The X-Files,

"By shifting gears between the serial and the episodic, The X-Files self-consciously rewards avid fans by drawing on the continuity of previous episodes, hence validating their diligent viewing, while at the same time welcoming new audience members since most of the plotlines don’t rely on previous knowledge of the series" (33).

They go on to suggest that The X-Files successfully improved upon the formulas of Star Trek in its various TV incarnations and of Twin Peaks (1990) by striking this balance between serial and stand-alone episodes (33). Smallville’s producers built upon these existing formulas in order intentionally to weave the probability for a "cult" fanbase into the primary text of a television show. This concept of contemporary television production is vital here, surmising that the longevity and commercial success of a show depend on a balance between cult and mainstream fandom.

Regarding costume and colors:

Although the institution of the superhero costume is maintained in Spider-Man, Smallville’s creators decided to downplay the costume and further suggest that any one of us could be a superhero. The absence of the iconic Superman costume brings the character closer to the audience; as Gough insists,

"In Clark’s case, we look at him as a person. We took away the costume" (Quoted in McFarland, E1).

Yet even without the signature tights, plenty of references to traditional Superman elements allow more culturally informed viewers to glean an extra level of pleasure from the show. Clark is almost always dressed in blue and/or red; the Smallville High logo is a crow wearing a red cape with an S on its chest, and the pilot episode of the series shows Clark bare-chested with a red S spray-painted on his chest, the victim of a high school prank. As Peter MacFarland discusses the superhero, "color plays an important role in the iconicity of the superhero costume," and even a simplification of a hero’s costume into blocks of color is "abstract and iconic, a more direct statement of the identity of the character" (371). Indeed, the show’s creators intentionally fill the mise-en-scene with red, yellow, and blue, hinting at the mythos behind their version of Clark Kent while still allowing a younger audience to identify with the character.

Regarding the I-Net, and how we fish bowls influence the big picture:

Naturally, as the latest mutation of a cultural myth with a strong established fanbase, Smallville has had to cater to the fannishly voracious (and mostly male) comic book crowd, at least to a certain extent. At the same time, the increase in viewers who use the Internet to augment their consumption of television texts has fostered changes in cultural perceptions about fan communities. Henry Jenkins addresses these changes in how fan cultures are perceived in a recent article noting,

"contemporary popular culture has absorbed many aspects of ‘fan culture’ that would have seemed marginal a decade ago" (2003, 291).

Though certain aspects of fandom, such as fanfic writing and role-playing games, still connote a certain degree of subversion, some previously stigmatized practices have become so commonplace on the Internet that many producers of media texts have adopted them into their overall strategies for marketing a cultural product and developing a loyal audience. Jenkins goes further to note that in many cases

"commercial culture seeks to absorb or mimic the appropriative aesthetic of participatory culture to reach hip, media-savvy consumers" (2003, 292).

There's tons more... Corporate revenue synergy, cross marketing strategy, push/pull mediums, web blogging, fan communities, illusion versus reality and committing to a virtual world, fan fiction (slash - and the studio's willingness to go with the flow!), and media convergence. The conclusion of the paper brings it all home:

Yet in all the discourse surrounding the production, marketing, and consumption of Smallville, one fact remains abundantly clear. The story is about Superman, and Superman represents the ultimate figure for the socially unsure: a clumsy and awkward geek on the outside, a charming, powerful, moral superhero on the inside. As one reviewer of Smallville put it,

"Clark’s an outsider, no matter how beautiful, fast or powerful he is. He is, in that sense, every teenager who wants the prettiest girl in school but for one reason or another can’t have her" (Oxman, 46).

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the character of Superman speaks to most Americans in this way, at least those of us who aren’t (or weren’t) football stars or homecoming queens in high school. I discussed how Smallville was marketed in a way to prevent teenagers from finding Clark Kent "uncool," and I think this speaks to Superman’s fundamental flexibility — Superman can always be altered to seem cool to a younger generation, but only if he speaks to each new generation in a language they understand.

Quite a read, eh?

Nice dodge attempt...

And your reason for posting it here was...?

The comic is a direct tie-in for the film. Thus it's inherently tied to the film and its "marketing." Now, I'm all for supporting things you love, but you seem to be ignoring some useful hints about ways to avoid more confrontations in this forum... and your ever-growing "signature" is approaching aggressive enthusiasm...

SIgnature is irrelevant, Marlon Brando is Jor-el. SR or Not; he is 'Jor-El' thanks to the history of those films and I thought It'd be neat to see the comic version of him

Honestly I just wanted to see the 'Crystal Krypton' from the first film drawn nicely and I thought it'd be cool to see.

SR tie-in or not., its right out of the first Superman movie; But notice I didnt even mention SR.....for all anyone knew it could have been an STM comic.

I purposely didnt specify. Thats well within the rules.

I started a thread about SR here? http://www.smileys.ws/smls/confused/00000013.gif Link me, I dont recall that unless it was like 6 months ago.

And really, within all logic and reason; unless you did research about the SR comic series and learned it was tied to SR, you honestly wouldnt know from my post....

All I showed was a drawing of the Crystal Kryptonian city and Jor-El from STM.

If you did go to all the trouble of looking up the relevance of the comic and its ties, it proves you have a vested interest in the film.

I never said he shouldn't be able to have that idiotic sig, I just posted an opinion about it. I've actually taken him off Ignore 3 times, because I would rather NOT have people on Ignore, it's annoying to me to not see some of the posts in a conversation until they are quoted. But everytime I do, I can't BELIEVE how passive/aggressive this guy is. Schmoozing one minute.. then verbally stabbing people the next. lol it isnt insecurity about the film's success  If it was, logically I'd go to a forum where I could actually get a large majority to go see it... here, what like 6 people. Not even worth it.

Youre being way too emotional and sensitive about this when there wasnt really an proof of intent in that comicbook post.

Like I already said for the billionth time, I dont care if the Wellingnites and company dislike it, (in my view, alot of them would blindy dislike it regardless how great it is......and that isnt my problem).

But fine, if I dont mention the movie in this forum again (or elude to it)...or post anything Superman-related (that could be tied to it); no one else can either; thats only fair.

Regardless of the film coming out very soon and the hype at full blast, it can't be mentioned here. It usually is by other people and then you guys blame me for it. So this time, it ends here and I'll do my part not to mention (or elude) to it here as well.

Yep, nice way to insult this forum's membership. The people on this board merely want to discuss Smallville, whether or not they like SR is irrelevent. But you see, like many fanatics, you've adjusted your self-image, vicariously, to incorporate the identity of this film. Your ego's utterly dependent on how this film will be perceived and how well it does. Furthermore, you take pleasure in inciting piss-fights between Smallville fans and SR fans, as evidenced by your track record of posting in this forum in addition to your inflammatory sig. It's your right to have such a sig, mind you. After all, having poor taste isn't against the rules.

Like I already said for the billionth time, I dont care if the Wellingnites and company dislike it, (in my view, alot of them would blindy dislike it regardless how great it is......and that isnt my problem).

You are purposefully changing the subject. Once again, it's totally irrelevent. I could care less about the motivations of a "Wellingite." You wouldn't go into a Batman Begins forum and start shilling SR, would you? How about the Superman comics forum? Yet, because there's some mild relation between Smallville and Superman Returns, both in subject and past production history, that somehow gives you the right to come in here and incite flame wars. I don't think so.

You don't make the rules. The rules are already in place. You continually violate them then try to rationalize and defend your actions. You are behaving like a weasel, friend.

This seemed like the best place for it -

I was a little let down by the last season of smallville. I enjoy so much of it but I find it easy to get bored at the constant "blah" stories. I like the Superman moments - the displays of powers but the last episode was just a bit flat & rushed.......anyone else feel a bit let down by this show sometimes?

thus, the yellow sun affects superman's physiology.

Superman can run fast, hear and see well, is invincible and can leap tall budings in a single bound (but not fly) as a result of what the yellow sun does to him.

Thus the manifestion of Supe's powers are the effects of the yellow sun on him.

Can someone explain to me what the hell is happening to this board? Seriously! It seems EVERY-time-I-check-it out someone new is getting banned, or put on probation.

In the last week, I’ve seen long time posters all but walk out because of improper policing, I’ve seen long time posters put on probation, I’ve heard of inappropriate pictures of fellow members being posted.

How is any of this even possible? It’s the freakin’ summer hiatus on this show. There’s nothing to actually talk about. My very obvious guess is that people are coming in here dropping SR, *****ing about SV, and provoking long time members. If I’m wrong someone please correct me.

you just need too try harder..:)

in my experience, being banned gets you as close as it gets to the feeling of being inside PZ..
so it can actually help in understanding how Clark feels at the moment, this extremely dark, lonely, if not horifying moment - which is certainly helplful if you ever intend to, lets see, write a review or something..

LOL!

:D

Too funny...

Well, I did get permenantly banned from that Devoted place (see my sig) so I know how it feels, actually.

;)

I don't miss that place AT. ALL but I would sure miss it here. :(

I've actually found one other person on that board that likes Smallville--but no, for the most part the posters there are general movie fans and are happiest in non-superhero related forums.

Ah well, their loss. You guys are great. :D

"Jeepers Ms. Pat, what happened?" <in best Jack Larsen Jimmy Olsen voice>In a nutshell? I posted a few SV Clark quotes in a thread for general Superman quotes over yonder. My post wasn't the first to do so. I had a brief but pleasant conversation with the locals. n00b showed up after I left and got everybody railed up over the crossing streams rule. When I saw the posts later, I replied in kind, and then *I* got probation for starting the argument.

And the best part? After the post history was deleted leaving no record of the conversation, the thread was then MOVED to the misc. supes' forum where no moratorium on stream-crossing exists. Now folks are posting more SV quotes there.

All this happened less than a week after a thread was allowed to FESTER for days in THIS forum with steam-crossing arguments and finally closed when the mod felt it had "run its course." I'll say.

Whatever. I'm moving on. In the future, I'll avoid socializing over yonder as it clearly leads to trouble. I wear my SV fandom on my sleeve and that just aint gonna change. There's plenty of other red-headed stepchildren to mingle with at the back of THIS bus. I hear we even have our own drinking fountains here. Aint that 'pecial? :)

It's been a long day. Looking forward to starting fresh tomorrow. *sigh*

Yay! Welcome Back, Pat!!

And Pickle, I have a Tabby as huge as the cat in those pictures. If Mel was still posting on this board, she'd tell you that she refers to my cat as her foot stool. She loves to rest her feet on him, and he just thinks that's peachy.

Y'know, there was all this screamin', horn blarin', wavin' flags, and tears of joy all last night all around Brussels' Grand Place (here's a pic of the place)
http://kinkodev.free.fr/register/cp/cp_belgique3.jpg

First I thought the flags were yellow, red, and black and that they were delirously happy about Germany's win over Costa Rica in the World Cup finals. But then I realized in the night air I was mistaking yellow, red, and black for yellow, red, and BLUE!

Obviously thousands of fans were celebrating NOT the German win, but rather the return of our very own Patty! For the record they partied til the wee hours. So you see Pat, they love you here, too! (just like a certain actor we all know) :D

Actually, thats a stock tourism photo of the place when they have one of the festivals. Not an actual photo of last night, but take away the flowers and thats it at night. Really gorgeous and really crowded this time of year. In fact, I'm on my way there right now (its just after 9PM here now).

Great for sitting outside and having a Chimay Blue beer (made by Trappist Monks). Not that I ever did that of course :D

Again? Did you have one before?

Yup. Before they changed the avatar rules to minimum 300 posts I used one similar to that below. The original is on my home computer, but as you know I'm in Brussels. Only difference is the original is a drawing, not an actual photo. Also, I'm not really into sumo, and for that matter, I'm not Asian, but its the only depiction of the action to "squat low" that I could think of. Just my warped sense of reality. Finally, and for the record...thats not my picture. Honest. :D

Is it Sept. yet? I already have the DTs, and I don't think it's even been a month yet. :(
