Guys........prepare yourself for some homo-erotic sub-text....and very immature laughs.........you've been warned.....
Back in 1951, "pulling a boner" meant to "make a foolish mistake." And I believe I'm correct in saying "boner" still has this exact same connotion. The plot of JOKER'S BONER in the issue #66.
The Joker tries to force the Batman "into a boner" (!!!!!), to make him the "butt"
of Gotham City's jokes. The boner backfires and the Joker is hauled off to Arkham where more boner's surely await.
This issue of BATMAN has never been reprinted..........wonder why?
Here..........see for yourself http://jokerboner.ytmnd.com/

The rumor going around was that Saul was dead, but when Batman and Robin investigated, they found at that really all of them were dead EXCEPT Saul so he got imposters to continue the legacy and started the "Saul is dead" rumor to throw off suspicion that everyone else was dead.
or something along those lines...

I can't believe how long it took DC to fire Kelly Jones...
NO ONE FIRED KELLEY JONES. After 9 YEARS of Batman (92 to 00) Kelley Jones left to do creator owned books at Dark Horse. Kelley Jones did covers for Batman and Detective from 1992 to 1994, then full books of Batman from 1995 to 1998. Kelley Jones did the Batman Vampire Trilogy: Red Rain 1992, Bloodstorm 1994 and Crimson Mist 99. Kelley Jones did Batman Dark Joker the Wild 1993, and Batman Haunted Gotham 00. So after 9 years of Batman (92 to 00) Kelley Jones left to do creator owned books like Kelley Jones the Hammer at Dark Horse, Zombie World Eat Your Heart Out at Dark Horse, and the Last Train To Deadsville at Dark Horse. After Batman, Kelley Jones also did The Crusaders for DC/Vertigo.

that's a great picture, is that Bill Sienkiewicz?
Assuming you aren't being sarcastic, I agree. Bill Sienkiewicz is a great artist. I can definitely understand why people wouldn't like that drawing though. His artwork is definitely NOT for everyone, especially in a medium like comic books where everyone is so used to seeing traditional art, with realistic proportions.
And while I don't really care for his artwork in the drawings you posted, Sam Kieth can do some really nice artwork. His Maxx stuff was excellent.

Kelley Jones macabre horror art is wrong for Batman? People say the same thing about Tim Burton. That his atmospheric Gothic style in Batman (1989) and Batman Returns was to weird and wrong for Batman. They are wrong. And Kelley Jones Gothic horror art is perfect for Batman. Atmospheric Gothic horror is what Batman is all about. Batman is not really a superhero. He has no superpowers. He is a creature of the night. Striking terror. Batman was heavily influenced by the atmosphere of Gothic horror films.
The Bat (1926) inspired Batman's costume.

Kelley Jones clearly can draw. I have read Arkham Asylum many times since 1989. I own it. Arkham Asylum is a great one shot Batman book. Painted by Dave McKean, who is one of my favourite artists.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/rudeboy-/Arkha111.jpg (http://photobucket.com/albums/y227/rudeboy-/?)
However Dave McKean was never the regular artist for a monthly Batman series for three years. Kelley Jones was. Painting full books of a monthly series would take to long. Kelley Jones brought a Gothic atmosphere back to the Batman monthly series. Batman depends on atmosphere. Atmospheric scenes. Kelley Jones style while also a Gothic atmosphere, is different then Dave McKean's, which is Bill Sienkiewicz-influenced. Kelley Jones style is Bernie Wrightson-influenced, with exaggerated shapes. Lots of bloodshed and violence. A artist should develope a style.

Kelley Jones learned from Berni Wrightson, clearly, and he has taken the Gothic horror to the next level on Batman.
http://image.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/fullsize/07206180254.496.GIF
Then he wasn't paying attention.
I'm sorry, but his artwork is too goofy-looking to be anything remotely horrorfying.
To me, there needs to be at least a small connection with reality in order for it to be scary. Even Tim Burton, who had mutant freaks and reanimated corpses, got that and had regular people (such as Max Shreck, and even Bruce Wayne) among the chaos.
Jones just doesn't do that at all. Just look at the ears on Batman! If I saw that guy in an alley, I'd be too busy laughing my ass off and asking if the ears are compensating for something to be afraid.
Like I said, the only people who've done horror Batman right is Berni Wrightson and Dave McKean.

Batman's long cape billowing out behind him, swirling about him, endowing him with an air of mystery was inspired by Dracula with Bela Lugosi.
The Joker was inspired by the Man Who Laughs (1928)
Two-Face was inspired by Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
Clayface was inspired by Boris Karloff (Basil Karlo is an allusion to Boris Karloff) and Lon Chaney in the Phantom of the Opera.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/rudeboy-/phantom1.bmp
Yeah, that's a nice approach for Batman also. I don't think there's something like the "definitive" and only one version of Batman's mythology. It's also enjoyable for some this macabre horror approach AND other kinds of depictions may be enjoyable too, for instance a realistic one, like Nolan and others. I like both. (read on my sig...)
And I agree that Kelley Jones' art is very well suitable for this kind of macabre horror like approach. If it's ugly or grotesque, well, it's not supposed to be beautiful, if it's a horror-macabre depiction after all. http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/redface1.gif
Others may like it or not, and that's just a matter of personal preferences, anyway... http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/icon14.gif

I do not like Jim Lee's overrated art on Batman, so why would I like Rob Liefeld? It's the same Image superhero style. Jim Lee's art is overly-muscled, disproportionate, to shinny and bright which doesnt fit well with the shadowy gothic Batman. His faces have very little variation, and are really rather dull. Some comic book fans (the younger ones, really) need to broaden their tastes.

You don't like Jim Aparo.
Jim Aparo definitely was one of the best in the early 70's. Jim Aparo's art was very detailed and dark looking in a Neal Adams style and he helped the creature of the night Batman return.

Jim Aparo at his best in the early 1970's:

However, sadly by the late 70's, 80's and 90's his art had become simplistic, bland and dull.

He repeated the exact same expressions on many faces again and again, and his characters had little fluidity to movements. Very stiff looking.

I was laughing at the Batman, actually. Not the woman. That's another fault of Kelley Jones, his art doesn't show you anything. If I hadn't of inspected the art, I would've never noticed the dead woman. And considering this is a cover, the dead woman would've been an important part of the story (either that, or corpses/death) so if I miss the story from the cover, then Kelley has failed as an artist.

I'm not the biggest fan of Tim Sale. His art seems to be kind of rough and impressionist, but since it's inked with straight, clean lines it doesn't seem quite right to me. But anyone who can say that Kelly Jones draws better than him with a straight face needs a new perscription for their glasses.
Jim Lee is currently my favorite Batman artist. He manages to have style without completely throwing out all realism. It's a very fine line to tread on, but I think he does it quite well.

(gorgeous) style. Also, Kelley Jones, macarbre and atmospheric? You're thinking of Mike Mignola. Kelley Jones just draws ugly pictures that do nothing for the characters. Tim Sale uses moody lighting and expressive figures. You called Kelley Jones extremely exaggerate and fantasticly ugly art "great" and you say Tim Sale cant draw. That is hypocritical....
See? I can be unoriginal too. That post of yours can go both ways, buttercup.
No, it can not go both ways, sugerpie. I never said Tim Sale can't draw. I said he's art is sketchy and simplistic. And Mike Mignola is as macabre as Walt Disney compared to Kelley Jones.

The point is:
Sale's art grows on you.
Kelly art gets worse over time.
I think Jones sucks. I USED to think Sale's art wasn't special. But it grew on me. Sale's pages are beautifully layed out, while Jones' are cluttered and ugly.
Kelley Jones art is not supposed to look beautiful. It is meant to look ugly, ghoulish and macabre.

Found this through google...........I think it's fair to say that the Joker can be drawn in a variety of ways. Personally, I prefer him to look more bizarre.....with a pointy nose and pointy-like chin..........and not like some guy in clown drag.
I found this through google, it's a review on the Joker figure based on Jim Lee's HUSH.
I remember the moment that I first saw Jim Lee's Joker, as it left a huge impression on me. There I was, flipping through one of the earlier issues of Hush, in my dorm room, while Brian was reading comics on his bed, occasionally laughing or emitting inquisitive and indigestive grunts, and there he was. Joker. And I gasped. It's unknown why human beings gasp, for the same reason it's not entirely known why we laugh or yawn or perpetuate reality TV shows which degenerate the human species and its already waning dignity, but I gasped. It's been admitted by Lee that his Joker was based loosely on the undeniably best Joker ever, painted by Dave McKean in the Arkham Asylum : A Serious House on Serious Earth graphic novel written by Grant Morrison. McKean's Joker stole the show from any Joker which might come after him, but this Joker is a very close second.
Sure, it's a controversial interpretation, but I think that if you're gonna do a Joker, you might as well go crap wild with him. Make him look like a deranged marionette, give him razor teeth and razor eyes and all of that. Despite all of this leeway with the Joker, there's still no excuse for Mattel's upcoming 'Construction Worker Joker', which is honestly not something that I just made up. This Joker, my friends, is crap wild. He's lanky, has a mess of hair that curls into two horns at the top of his head, pointy shoes, has an opening mouth and a crazy enormous gun.
With 15 points of articulation, (including waist, wrists, jaw and a ball jointed neck), he's far more articulated than Batman, and all of it is smooth and tight. The ball joint for the neck has a very wide turning area, but it pops out pretty easily, as does the fun jaw joint. Fortunately, it all goes back together pretty well too. The mouth doesn't open very wide, but it's enough. Again, the usefulness of the articulation below the waist is questionable, has he needs both feet to stand properly, and the foot pegs aren't deep enough to support him on just one leg.
The paint apps are pretty interesting. Wheras most previous Joker figures have some kind of striping on their suits, this Joker is a solid purple. Everything is pretty clean, with some interesting coloration on the face. While the face is the traditional white color, it has details of pink running along it, giving him a slightly alive or aggravated look, to counteract his inhuman dead-face look. His gums are purple and his teeth are off-white, and the tiny details in the creasing of his face are really very neat.
While he has no accessories but his base (which is the same as Batman's, as it is throughout the series), the gun that he comes with is affixed to his hand. The attached flag, which reads 'BANG', is not paper but printed fabric. Someone sneezed on mine during production, giving me not only a splattery flag, but a rare, flesh-eating disease that seems to attack only the groin. Thanks, Taiwan. Like I need anything ELSE attacking my groin.
Another figure that throws some diversity into the display of beautiful Jokers, and again very faithful to the designs of Jim Lee. High score for the guy with the green hair! Maybe we'll never see this Joker again, but for me, much of the fun of the Joker is seeing him interpreted and recreated with each new artist. I wouldn't mind a new Joker for every artist who's ever drawn him. As it stands, this Joker sets a standard.

That was a pretty dumb statement. This is generally a thread for funny Batman pictures, and if a few (really) bad Superman picture make their way in, you shouldn't get all pissy. It's not like someone said anything insulting towards you or anything and nobody in this thread has given any evidence to being insecure about how stupid Batman comics were in the golden/silver age. Well, you really can't see the nipples there. Plus I dig how they did the symbol there, a good compromise of the usual black bat and the oval.

They smeared out the nipples in photoshop, but they didn't do a very good job.

Thats a great picture. Shows how well Batman and Robin could have been in the hands of a director that understood the material.

What's wrong with that picture? Is it just Clooney that you don't like?
There are no nipples, and the suit is black.

Yeah, after seeing him in From Dusk 'Till Dawn, I KNOW he would have done a great Batman.
So sad. :(

Go to GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH under NAKED BATMAN...too kinky to describe. Bats is surrounded by a "Joker Serpent" wearing nothing but his cowl. I have NO CLUE what this is about.
DO a GOOGLE IMAGE SEARCH under NUDE BATMAN...a drawing of Bruce in the buff. He's not too big, if you get my drift....

STOP CITIZEN!
That's no crazy-ass fanart, that's in fact A GENUINE COMIC COVER!!! There was some sort of mini-series with the Christian story of creation where Batman was Adam and the Joker was the Snake.
Weird...
