Please pity my foolishness, for I just learned the error of my ways. Upon further research, this is no mere bum, but the most important part of any police force: The Police Folk Singer. That is how people found out about crime back in the old days. You see, the folk singer would be pearched on steps of the local police department. He could sitting on the railing, or sitting on the steps, or leaning on the wall, it didn't matter as long as he was there. He would sit there all day, with his sack lunch and guitar, watching the steps for anything that came by. If something came by, he would stop what he was doing, raise his guitar and go into song. Say, if someone came to check the lost & found, he would immediatly start strumming his guitar and sing, attracting a crowd around him, eager to hear the news. There were two folk singers per department: one that worked the day shift and one that work night shift. The one on the night really didn't need to sing, he just needed to be there to tell the one on the day shift everything that happened that night so the day one could sing a recap in the morning.
So it was, until Al Gore invented the internet and put them out of business. To this day, some of the elderly generation still remember the noble songs of the police station folk singer...

Typically weddings are seated by bride's side and groom's side. Here it plays out as villains and heroes. Hence, Harvey Dent is on Bruce's side and Two Face is on Selina's. Pretty cool, actually.

But since when has Catwoman ever identified herself with The Joker and those psychos? I mean, she's a criminal, but she's not a mass murderering sadist like The Joker.

Dr. Fredric Wertham thought those two were gay
Honestly, there wasn't that much (or in the very least, not as blantent) sexual innuendos with the two until AFTER Wertham did his thing and the Comics Code was created.
So, in reality, if they were gay before, Wertham pretty much made them Super-Gay, like, "Queer-Eye" gay.

There was never really anything gay about their relationship. Its basis is supposed to reflect a knight and his squire.

I also hate Klaus Jansen's artwork, but why does EVERYONE except me hate that Batman/Spawn story? I thought it was interesting and well written, and a hell of a lot better than the Miller/McFarlane turdbomb Spawn/Batman that came out at the same time.
I can understand that people might not have liked Batman/Spawn because it wasn't what they expected or hoped for from such a story but hell... I've read MUCH worse inter-company crossover books. Did anyone ever read Daredevil/Batman (the one where Two-Face and Hyde are the villains)? Man, did that suck. Or how about Silver Surfer/Superman? Another one that was terrible. Deathmate (the Image/Valiant crossover) also was pretty weak. All in all, there haven't been all that many good inter-company crossovers simply because the writers usually try to jampack a whole bunch of stuff into a book that 9 times out of 10 isn't long enough for any of it to be satisfying. One of the few exceptions (in my opinion) was Green Lantern/Silver Surfer... I really enjoyed that story because they balanced out the characters well and anytime Thanos is the big bad, you've got a good chance at the story being good.

Really what is the story behind this issue?
Robin broke his arm, and Bruce was afraid that the public would realize that since both Dick Grayson and Robin have broken arms, they're one in the same. So he came up with a solution: Wearing increasingly ridiculously-colored costumes, so that nobody paid any attention to Robin whenever they arrived on the scene. It all culminated in him showing up in a RAINBOW-striped costume. Of course, the ruse worked. All that anybody noticed or talked about in the press was how Batman was going insane and wearing ape**** costumes, and Dick's secret was safe.
Seriously.

All that you "proved" to me is that you can't think originally. I was proven wrong no where. Also, you keep using the same picture, I think that's the only Sale picture you've ever seen. Kelly Jone's are is ugly and goofy looking, Sale's is atmospheric and stylish. For someone who humps Kelly Jones' leg so much, I thought you would appreciate the exxageration of features to enhance character. Guess not, hypocrite.
Important distinction. Kelly Jones Batman art is really bad (with the exception of Mr. Freeze and some ocaisional pannels where he pulls off what he was going for). Kelly Jones is a very good artist, and one need only look at Sandman for proof.

I'm not saying Jones was the best Batman artist, far from it. Just that some of the stuff he was trying to do was cool IMO, and I would have liked to have seen it work out a bit better. Jones run was ruined by a rushed feeling to the work (in contrast to his work on books like Sandman and Deadman) more than the overall style he was trying to acheive. At least, that's how I feel about it.

Sandman really hit its stride when Kelley Jones was drawing it and Kelley Jones looks a lot like Wrightson.

By the way, Calliope is in Dream Country. Wrightson is the guy who did The Cult.
http://image.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/fullsize/07206180254.493.GIF
In the Batman picture by Kelley Jones above, he's puting his hands up in active movement, inspecting
her corpse. He is a detective. The ears do look sinister. That's the point. "Criminals are cowardly. A superstitious cowardly lot. My disguise must strike terror into there hearts. I must be a creature. A creature of the night. Black. Terrible." The supernatural/paranormal, the occult, has been a part of Batman comics since Detective #31 (1939) when the vampires, the Monk and Dala, first appeared. Batman becomes a vampire in the Gerry Conway/Gene Colan run (1982). There's Nocturna, Batman's vampire girlfriend (from 1983-1985), etc.
Kelley Jones originally took his cues more from Berni Wrightson, his original primary artistic influence on the Sandman books etc. When he became the artist on the Batman title Jones became influenced by the classic Bob Kane Batman and classic EC horror books, becoming more stylized and his art on Batman reflects that. Kelley Jones wicked art does not belong on a worst Batman pics thread.
50's and 60's Batman and Bat-Mite does. Art by Sheldon Moldoff.

The Death of Marat
Jean-Paul Marat was sitting in the bathtub when his last hour struck on July 13, 1793. A teacher of languages, a journalist and a physician, Marat had turned out to be one of the most radical demagogues the 1789 Revolution produced. He spent much time in the tub to find relief from a chronic, itchy rash. He wore compresses on his forehead to relieve headaches from which he also suffered. While he was bathing on that fateful day, he was reading a letter from Charlotte Corday, the great-granddaughter of the playwright Pierre Corneille. The young noblewoman had tried in vain to gain admittance to Marat. Now she had sent him a letter in which she slyly suggested a tete-a-tete. He let her in and she stabbed him. Marat died instantly.
Some contemporaries must have been pleased at the deed. Marat had been a tough customer. He had had 860 gallows erected to deal with his political enemies and had sent over 200,000 of them to the guillotine. His opponents may have considered his death a just revenge. His adherents, however, celebtated him as the martyr of a just cause. Appointed master of ceremonies at the hero's funeral, painter Jacques-Louis David was a fervent revolutionary and a personal friend of Marat. He obliged by putting Marat's corpse on canvas just as he had had it put on display: with his bare chest and wounds visible. On October 15, 1793 David presented the picture to the National Assembly. It became the symbol of the French Revolution. Copies of it were placed on church altars, smothered under billowing clouds of incense. Even in public offices copies of the painting were supposed to replace Crucifixes and royal portraits. However, before it could get out of hand, the personality cult was stopped by Robespierre's fall and the arrest of Jacques-Louis David. On February 10 the painting was removed from the chamber of the National Assembly.
I believe in Marat, the almighty, the Creator of freedom and equality, our hope, who strikes terror into the aristocracy, who has gone forth from the heart of the nation and is revealed in the Revolution, who was murdered by the enemies of the Republic, who poured forth upon us the breath of freedom, who has descended into the Elysian Fields, whence he will one day return to judge and condemn the aristocracy.

No, it screams out "PEDOPHILIA" or "CHILD MOLESTATION".
That is if you are paying attention to the fact that Bats is dry humping Robin...I was just talking about in general the whole scene screaming out gay. =P

Does anyone know the year when the comic with that panel came out? If it's what I think it is, it supports my hyposthesis:
Fredric Wertham, with his attempts to destroy the comics world, succeeded in either making Batman and Robin gay, or made it more transparent.

I believe the story of that issue is that Robin broke his arm, so Bats has to wear different colored costumes to distract people so they don't see that Robin has a cast on and they make a connection with Dick Grayson, who also has a cast. Ofcourse, he can't just leave the young boy with the broken arm home while he heals...:o

I don't see Robin with a cast on in that cover. Also from reading the cover...what you just said makes no sense.

Bob Kane didn't have anything to do with that! Bob Kane didn't draw any of that! Bob Kane stoped drawing Batman comics in 1943 when the Batman newspaper strip started and Jerry Robinson, who had been inking Bob Kane, took over the art in the Batman comics in the 40's. Bob Kane died November 3rd 1998. The Rainbow Batman was drawn by Sheldon Moldoff and written by Edmond Hamilton in 1957.

I saw Bob Kane show off the way that he drew Batman when he was on Oprah (yes, Oprah) back in 1995. So obviously he did draw Batman at some point.

He drew the very first Batman...was in Detective Comics...don't remember the issue though. But it was like Detective Comics "The Bat-Man" or something like that.

Yes, Bob Kane drew the Batman, mysterious creature of the night (not the Rainbow Batman), from Detective #27 1939 to 1943 when the Batman newspaper strip started and Jerry Robinson, who had been inking Bob Kane's art, took over the art in the Batman comics in the 40's.

Growing up never seeing that version of Batman til a few years ago felt so odd. Cause you are so used to a much different cowl and gloves. I think it is odd that we are talking about the gloves though, lol. When people talk about artists it is normally about the cowls or how they put the bat symbol on; circle around the bat or not kinda thing.

I love the original long bat ears, angular black cowl and even the weird gloves. He was sinister looking and demonic looking. He looked like a villain. He even had a gun and actually killed people. He punched cops.

This isn't really a horrible picture of Batman per se, but when I saw it... well, it certainly calls to mind an interesting DC/Marvel crossover.

For a real lousy Batman, though, how about this Batman painting by Francis Tsai?
