In Kane's first Batman drawing? Nah I'm pretty sure blue.

In Kane's first Batman drawing? Nah I'm pretty sure blue.

He wore small purple gloves in Detective #27 and 28 (1939), then blue gloves starting in Detective #29 to 35 (1939-1940), then the modern style gloves with the bat wing points on the sides starting in Detective #36 (1940).

That is wicked. Love it or hate it, I love Kelley Jones style. I love how Kelley Jones draws Batman. Very shadowy. Very dark and sinister. And Joker looks very insane. I even love the hair.

Just looking at Batman's hands, and the placement of his eyes and teeth... jesus, he's a god damn mutant. And the Joker looks like Martin Short on a bad day.

It's exaggerated. So is the art by Sales, Jim Lee, Miller, Bisley, Sienkiewicz etc. They each exaggerate in different ways.

That's a real comic panel. From Batman #107 (1957). No photo edit.
Robin actually was thinking about a girl, Vera Lovely.
Out of context it looks very gay. Even in context it looks totally redicules and hilarious.

But what gets me is, where the hell did the costumes COME from? In the movie, they have to rush to rescue the city, because Freeze is in danger of... freezing it over. Yet somehow, despite rushing from Ivy's hideout to the giant observatory, they have time to change clothes to stylishly absurd new costumes? They even get special new ICE VEHICLES, because I guess they know that by the time they get there, the city will be frozen over due to how slow they are. Maybe that wouldnt' have happened if they didn't STOP TO CHANGE OUTFITS.

When did and how did Alfred die?
Sometime in the 50's when the comics industry was in an uproar over Wertham's Seduction Of The Innocent book and DC comics felt that 3 men living in the Wayne Mansion was risque and so Alfred died while trying to save Batman and Robin from having a boulder fall on them, brave Alfred stepped in and got crunched.

Years later when producers of the 60's Batman TV show told DC to bring back Alfred, the comic book writers conjured up a villian who was unmasked as Alfred who was under hypnosis.

Somthing like that, yeah.

That bit of text (ordered by the editor) is the only time Batman felt any sorrow over killing and contradicts Batman's original characterization by the creators: "A fiting end for his kind."It being in there for the editor or not, has nothing to do with it. It is a contradiction.

theMan-Bat
05-17-2006, 02:51 AM
It has everything to do with it. The original Bill Finger and Bob Kane Batman was a stone cold killer, then he was censored by the editor.

Batman killed a score of criminals from Detective #27 (1939) to Detective #47 (1941). Batman made the Punisher look like a wuss.
http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/soapbox/100601621162395,print.htm
Then Batman was censored by editor Whit Ellsworth in 1940 and DC's Editorial Boards in 1941. Bob Kane said in his book Batman And Me:

We had our first brush with censorship over Batman's use of a gun in Batman #1. In one story in that issue he had a machine gun mounted on his plane and used it. We didn't think anything was wrong with Batman carrying a gun because the Shadow used guns. Bill Finger was called on the carpet by Whit Ellsworth. He said, "Never let us have Batman carry a gun again!" The editors thought that making Batman a "murderer" would taint his character, and mothers would object. The new editorial policy was to get away from Batman's vigilanteism and to bring him over to the side of the law. So he was made an honorary member of the police. The whole moral climate changed in the 1940-1941 period. You couldn't kill or shoot villains anymore. DC prepared it's own comics code which every artist and writer had to follow. He wasn't the Dark Knight anymore with all the censorship.

Rynan
05-17-2006, 09:59 AM
Yeah, the Mad Hatter was involved. He wanted to steal Batman's cowl, so he irradiated it to make him take it off, which explains the pink color. But don't worry about Batman's idenity being comprimised, Batman had a another cowl underneath his normal cowl.

No, he has never made the Punisher looks like a "wuss", in terms of killing. Batman, even when potrayed as a killer has NEVER killed as many people as the Punisher does or has. But how does killing less people make you a "wuss"? It takes more balls to stand up to corruption, defeat it, and have the self will power to not kill in order to do so. Killing is the easy way out. It also adds for more character depth. His parents were murdered, so he refuses to be someone killing another.

I know that but doesn't Year One take place in like the 70s?

EDIT: Nevermind I just found out Earth-2 Batman was around during WWII

According to DC logic, all characters are designed to have appeared "10 years ago." Always 10 years ago, eternally 10 years ago. So that means that right now, Year 1 took place around '96.

Yea I think your right thinking about time in a comic book universe is way too hard.

You serious? That seems kinda retarded.

Doesn't look too bad compared to some things I've seen.

Batman on skis is still way better than Batman clicking his heels and ice skates popping out :down

'tis true. People may laugh at how DC handles its continuity and is constantly correcting it, but you know, at least it HAS continuity. Marvel doesn't even try to connect the old continuity up with the new much anymore.

What about in the episode of "The Batman", "The Big Chill", when he was in the winter suit with the skis that popped out? I thought those were a smart idea.
