The DC characters REDESIGN thread

Ok so I figured I'd start a new thread for all the non Batman or Superman related characters that I wanted to take a crack at redesigning. Crimson Dynamo inspired me to try my hand at retooling The Flash ever since he posted his redesign. I didn't want to clutter his thread with my artwork so I thought I'd kick off this thread with my Flash redesign.

This is a loose pen sketch with some notes I just did. The pose is still way off and his hands aren't quite right but again, it gives you an idea for my concept. I hope you guys can read the notes I wrote...it'll better explain my ideas for the costume.

Here was an idea I had for how he would lok when the face shield was flipped upward. The idea for the face shield is that he would be able to flip it down when in motion so it would protect his face against the extreme G forces he would generate moving at such high speeds. Once stopped, the shield could be flipped upward to reveal his face (no mask underneath the shield). The shield would be a one way reflective tint material (similar to Spider-Man's eye lenses only darker). I'm not sure if the shield would be dark red or black in color.

Thanks, I'll fix him and color him when I get some time. I have a cool idea for the color scheme on his suit....and YES those are short sleeves on his suit. The suit is meant to resemble something an actual runner would wear...tight, colorful (so people can see him coming...sort of) and of course extra emphasis on his footwear.

I also gave the "wings" on the side of his head a purpose. I made them wide ranged radio receivers that are capable of catching radio signals while under g forces, or even from extreme distances....basically they're "super" antennas that keep him in constant contact with the JL or whoever is on the other end, and since he can be half way around the world in the blink of an eye they need to be able to pick up signals ANYWHERE in the world.

Cool Flash. You've taken a very real-world approach with him. The ear-piece radio is a very good idea.
I'm sure a Flash fan would take issue with a lot of your design considerations (isn't he protected by some kind of speed-field when he runs, which helps protect his face and body from damage?), but I prefer my superheroes to be firmly grounded in reality.

Looks good, but it definitely needs the bat on the chest, it just looks off without it. The mask still looks a bit too Wolverine like for me.

Umm, Ryan Reynolds is pretty big.

And even if he wasn't, i really don't think The Flash needs to be so big and muscular; more along the lines of very lean, and slimmer than most other superheroes, since he's a runner.

Flash is a runner therefore his real muscle definition should come from his legs. I always draw Flash with a lean (but muscular) upper body, and large muscular things/calves....it just makes sense.

Same goes with Spider-Man....his legs should be bigger than his arms since he's always jumping around...etc.

I do too to some extent, but I think "reality" is a tricky thing to convey when you're dealing with extraordinary characters. I prefer to use the word "flawed". Superman may be the most powerful character in the DCU, but what are the drawbacks to being Superman? My Flash didn't get his powers by being struck by lightning in some lab, that was always an absurd origin of power for him....why would being struck by lightning give you superspeed? especially around chemicals? the lightning would have probably set the room on fire and killed him....follow what I'm saying?

My Flash may be able to run faster than light, but that doesn't mean his powers don't have there drawbacks. I imagine him to be constantly eating in an attempt to gain back the food he burns off. The reason for the face shield was to explain how he'd be able to move that face and not blow his eyes out of his head.

I REALLY like the "Ultimate" books because they seem to give their character's powers limitations and "realistic" explanations.

Y'know, i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Reynolds is currently bigger than Bale.. In terms of muscle mass and definition, of course... Reynolds is already taller than Bale, i believe.

Reynolds = 6'3
Bale = 6'2

This one isn't that bad. The only thing I would change is the colors. I'd have the stuff in light green (most of the body) in black, and have the chest/torso and mask red. I'd also put either a cape or (for the designs I do for Robin) even a trenchcoat colored red.

Nightwing was sorta a toungue and cheek response to a submission to the nightwing contest and my inability to get the hair right. why "punk" him up? why the hell not? every freakin character in comics is so straight. especially DC. sure its a little bit of cheese... Robin, I thought could do with sum pads and a slightly more fatigued look thus the green. the green really wasnt the right tint, i just wanted it to pop the pads out. even the red, i think should be deeper.

Yeah I know, but like I said...I like my character's powers to have their downsides too. Yeah he got super speed, but that doesn't mean his body won't be affected by it in a negative way. The idea for the costume was for him to 'adapt' to his new powers by covering his face and strengthening his feet.

I think thats the guy from that movie "My Little Eye". It's a really good movie for those that havent seen it. A nice twist in it too.

I think the idea of a face guard is more realistic than anything, because it protects his eyes from the sheer wind. To say he has 'mutated super eye-balls" is a bit much. Put some goggle lenses on that beeyotch, the face guard thing makes sense.

i really have no clue bout his powers. i looked at "Virtue and Vice" trade to get the gist of his powers. I figure the idea of it sorta consuming/eminating-from him would be visually interesting. i thought to take a look that i saw with that Orion (kirby??) character where tech is all squared and chunky and them try for a galactic protector vibe. i wish the background was better. space with a decent planet, maybe being attacked?? i thought going sleek would kinda be what i saw in a google search i ran, i preferred the suit look

What you don't seem to realise is that your constant bickering affects us all. I'm not even involved in this, but I have to wade through post after post of mindless and immature arguing.
Just when I think a thread is going places it's interrupted by someone making snide remarks about something that happened a while back.
The rest of us really aren't interested. We just want to see/do good art.
Now, Stew, it's really good of you to post art on Darth's behalf, and I'm a big fan of Darth's work, but it kind of ruins it if his fantastic concepts are accompanied with nasty remarks.
SOB's just trying to get on with this stuff now, and as he's one of Fan Art's most prolific artists, it'd be a shame to see him throw in the towel - regardless of whatever disagreements you had in the past.
So please, please give it a rest will you?

You're absolutely right.

This thing has been over for awhile now, and I'm really not interested in bringing it back up again. Stewie can post Darth's work all he wants, as I've said before I actually enjoy his work, it was always the person I didn't much care for. You have to keep in mind that if you post artwork (whether it's yours or someone else's) you leave yourself out in the open for all sorts of comments and critiques....from EVERYONE.

When someone posts a critique on the work you don't need to blast them because they don't agree with you....that's what the boards here are for.

Stewie, continue to post Darth's artwork but don't slam everyone who doesn't absolutely worship him or his artwork....who cares?

MidKnight, I love your art but I'm really over the whole "he's banned due to certain people" seriously man let it go, I didn't ban him....EXCELSIOR did, and believe it or not it wasn't all my fault. EXCELSIOR has clearly said that when he issues a warning and the person in question ignores him it's apparent that he has nothing to say in his defense. If you are that against DC being banned go take it up with EXCELSIOR and leave it off these boards.

Honestly Stewie I have no beef with you, I don't even remember what you've said about me before, and frankly I couldn't care less. I just think it's REALLY getting old when people have to add in there little insults. If you want to think that I am solely responsible for DC being gone then go right ahead...I'd advise you to take it up with EXCELSIOR though, I'm sure he'd tell you I was one of many who had complaints against him.

As far as Incredible Bob goes...how did I force him to leave? all I did was call him on his own BS. It's hard to force someone to leave that doesn't already want to go to begin with. I'm not going to "pack up" and leave simply because a couple of people bash me...when you put your work out for public display you have to have thick skin or you're going to get eaten alive. I know DC doesn't like me, and frankly the feeling is mutual but I'm not going to stoop to attacking his work....a critique is one thing, but a flat out attack is another.

As far as the "competition" thing goes, last I checked this wasn't a competition at all. It's a bunch of people sharing their ideas with a community of fans...we're not doing this for money, or prizes...it's because we like to share our ideas. You've got people Like Crimson Dynamo, Artist71, Midknight..etc who are all great artists...you think I'm going to get them banned because I'm threatened? I sit there and praise all of their work because I think they are each terrific in their own styles. Hell, I even liked your entry for the Superman contest....simple, yet effective.

I never claimed to be an art god here. I don't even compare to about 60% of the people on these boards...I'm just posting my ideas for people to see. If you like them great, if you don't oh well...simple as that.

MidKnight, I love your art but I'm really over the whole "he's banned due to certain people" seriously man let it go, I didn't ban him....EXCELSIOR did, and believe it or not it wasn't all my fault. EXCELSIOR has clearly said that when he issues a warning and the person in question ignores him it's apparent that he has nothing to say in his defense. If you are that against DC being banned go take it up with EXCELSIOR and leave it off these boards.

Thanks for clearing that up Bob. I'm glad that YOU had enough balls to come in here and clear the air with all the BS that's been going around. I NEVER once had any problem with Bob, the only reason I posted in his thread was because I THOUGHT he was essentially turning his back on everyone that liked his art....to me that's just not cool....but clearly I was wrong as that was not the case at all.

As far as Coolius goes, as I've said before I was NOT solely responsible for his banning. Sure I complained about him but that was only after I received the 7PM's and countless IM's from him stating how great he was and how "phony" I am....it just got old. EXCELSIOR has stated that DC has pissed off numerous people around here, and as a result racked up complaints from various people. DC is a GREAT artist, but his mass ego often overshadows his work. The one thing I can say is that I've never stooped so low as to insult his OR ANYONE'S artwork. I've offered critiques, but I've never flat out said "dude this sucks" or anything like that. DC deserves the ban he got, apparently I'm not the only one he annoyed....I alone don't have the power to ban anyone....follow what I'm saying? maybe people just got tired of comments like "want to see some porn I made with the Incredibles characters?"....seriously that's just sad.

I've never really understood why the people that "hate" me always seem to find their way into my threads....why is that? I have no problem with Stewie or Midknight, but apparently they both "hate" me and my artwork...so why come into my thread at all? I'm actually a fan of Midknight's artwork and Stewie's logo making abilities, but for some reason both of them just can't get over their dislike for me....oh well.

Bob was a tremendous asset to the art forum, and when he decided to leave I guess I tried to pick up his slack....that's why I started my "The Batman artwork" thread. The thing that cracks me up is the same people that went in there saying "oh man these design are so great" are the same ones that said "you're nothing but a tracer" or "you're such a hack" once any sort of problems came about....that's such a 3rd grade tactic, you're going to attack something you just praised? come on guys...at least attack ME. I like to think that I've helped inspire other people to post their redesigns or artwork in general. I've received a fair amount of e-mails or PM's from different members saying "hey man you've really inspired me to pick up my pencil and hammer out some ideas"....that's more of a compliment than any "cool stuff" I've got.

I hope you guys will drop the "bob killer" name from now on as you can see that I was less at fault than a lot of other people for Bob leaving. Now that it's been cleared I would like to invite Bob back to the forums....we seriously need some of his work to give this place a well needed boost.

Re: The Flash designs. I've often wondered what The Flash would look like in solid dark red, with less gold than usual. For instance, give him a red jumpsuit similar to his comic costume (with some eye protection), the gold lightning bolt emblem on his chest, and the earpieces, and leave it at that, making him a crimson streak with flashes of gold in it, a la Kingdom Come.

I alwasy thought he should have a hood and cape/cloak. I lost the backpack and gave him a messenger bag type thing(like Green Goblin) and ditched the hat. I also changed his facial hair. The primary clors would be Green and Black. If I figure out PS, I'll color it.

try throwing a layer on top - multiply it. then play with opacity
use tone higher then the original colour
this'll help shape the figure

now people here's my GL.I did john Stewart but except few differences it'd be the same with Kyle or Hal.he's a mix between actual Kyle design and a kind of Ironmanesque design because of the hole in his body, opened on the very deep heart of Oa.If U look at the "energy pit" of the battery , U'll see exactly the same as if U had looked in GL's armor hole.I always considered the GL like deeply heart-linked with the source of their power.

Ok I had a chance to tweek my Superboy design and change some stuff, I gave him a sleeker red and black costume, the outfit may look like rubber but I was using my comp to put the color in, I also made him look more like the Justice League cartoon style, anyway here he is.

thanks buddy.In fact I used a JL superman modelsheet at the basis and then reworked it with my pencil.same with GL.since I tried 5or6 design 4 each it's easier and faster that way.If it was MY personnal design at work, I would do everything myself but here it was just more practical.then colored it in photoshop.

CLARKY I have to say that your style is really good. I like the thick outlines (something I'm big on myself) and the colors are great.

ATC27 your Superbody concept is good, but your Flash just doesn't scream "Flash" to me. He looks like the word "Nova" should appear somewhere in his name.

I think the boots should be dark red - not yellow.
