To kick things off I'd like to make this point: Some people (including myself at one time) feel that Jessica Alba, although drop-dead gorgeous, is "too sexy" or exotic to play the role of Susan Storm. However, I think the casting choice is dead on, as shown in this picture comparisons I developed. Jessica possesses many of the same features--the full lips, the doe-eyes and the general facial structure--that artists have depicted for Susan in recent years.
http://img13.exs.cx/img13/559/SusanComp.jpg

The same can be said for the characteristics Jessica shares with actor Chris Evans ("Johnny Storm").
http://img86.exs.cx/img86/5121/JessieChris.jpg

Also, Susan's look has evolved many, many times over the years. At first, she was very modest, and simple--in the 60's. But as time has gone on, she's transcended that "damsel-in-distress" personna into one of Marvel's most striking beauties. The following is a gallery showcasing the various transformations Susan Storm Richards has undergone.

So for all those who are whining "But they got it right with the other chick from 1994", as you can see, nothing has been lost with the new millenium's version of The Invisible Woman. Just better.

On topic: Do you guys think it's pivotal that Jessica portrays a "maternal" side in this origin film? Part of me wants to see that, but part of me also feels that that is a quality she could develop more in the sequel, especially if Franklin is coming.

Don't get me wrong--I don't want to see The Jessica "Kick-Ass Girl" for the whole film, but some are caught up in this "She doesn't look 'motherly' enough." And I'm like, "Motherly' for WHO? She's more of a guardian of the group in the beginning than a mother figure. The "motherly" deal comes into play after she becomes Susan Richards--inspired by the roles of being a wife and motherhood.

I don't think it's a critical quality for this film.

Susan's Story

Susan Storm Richards
(known aliases include: Invisible Girl, Malice, Susan Benjamin)
Susan Storm is the eldest of the two children of Dr. Franklin and Mary Storm. She was born in Glenville, New York and was raised like most children, with the exception of one thing: her father was jailed for performing illegal medical procedures. When she was 12, she met Reed Richards (then 23) at her aunt's bording house. She was quite infatuated and tried to keep tabs on Reed for years to come.

As Susan grew older, she became interested in acting and got a few small television roles. Upon learning that Reed was moving to California, she left to pursue both of her dreams: Reed Richards and a career in Hollywood. She quickly captured Reed's heart and to pledge her faith in him, she offered her and her younger brother, Johnny, as human guinea pigs for his experimental rocket ship.

Sue was the first to find her super powers after the rocket crashed just outside of Central City, California. Initially, Sue could only become invisible at will; but over the years she gained the strength to render other objects invisible as well as create invisible force fields. Reed and his father, Nathaniel, have theorized the her powers stem from Hyperspace, giving her virtually a limitless supply of energy.
Shortly after the creation of the Fantastic Four, Susan designed their first uniforms. And not long afterwards she married Reed Richards and bore him a son, Franklin. Her first pregnancy was filled with complications, and she would have died if the remaining members of the FF borrow Annihilus' Cosmic Control Rod to save her life. Although her second pregnancy was not as life-threatening, their second child was believed to be still-born. This child, in reality, was transported into the future where she was born under unusual complications.

After Reed's apparent death, Sue took up leadership of the Fantastic Four. She quickly became more than a power to be reckoned with. After Reed's return however, she had been somewhat reluctant to give up her status of authority. Since her son was captured by Onslaught, and his powers severely depleted by creating and maintaining the Franklinverse, Susan seems to be returning to a more motherly role, hoping to raise her children in a more stable environment.

"Malice"--WHAT IS IT???
by Jeanne Burch
What is this thing? The entity known as Malice has possessed the bodies of Alison Blaire (the Dazzler), Wolverine, Rogue, Ororo (Storm), Lorna Dane (Polaris), Beatrice Conners, Alex Summers (Havok), and Sue Richards (the Invisible Woman). The Sue Richards' version of Malice appears to be a psychological manifestation of Sue's own dark side left over from the Infinity Wars; in any case, it is not the mutant of the same name that dogs the X-Folks.
First appearance: Well, something named Malice showed up in Jungle Action 8.
Died in: The mutant Malice was caught with nowhere to go in X-Factor 105. The alternate personality Malice...well, those alternate personalities never really die, do they?

Team affiliation: When in league with Mister Sinister, Malice was partial to Polaris of X-Factor (Uncanny X-Men 221-222) although left on her own she tried to destroy Polaris rather than be permanently tied to her (X-Factor 102-105). Malice was the field leader for Sinister's Marauders during the Mutant Massacre. The Invisible Woman attempted to integrate Malice into her own personality (Fantastic Four 368), which made her very cranky for a considerable period of time.
Powers: Malice is a strongly empathic entity with no known corporeal form. She specializes in disrupting the emotional center of the brain, emphasizing the emotions at the expense of rational thought. (This, incidentally, works for both versions of Malice...)

Biography
Born in Pomona, CA on April 28, 1981, Jessica and her family moved to Biloxi, Mississippi when she was an infant. Three years later, her Air Force father brought the family back to CA, then to Del Rio, Texas, before finally settling in Southern California when Jessica was nine. In love with the idea of becoming an actress from the age of five, Jessica was 12 before she took her first acting class. Nine months later, she was signed by an agent. A gifted young actress, Jessica has already played a variety of roles ranging from light comedy to gritty drama since beginning her career. She made her feature film debut in 1993 in Hollywood Pictures comedy Camp Nowhere. Originally hired for two weeks, she got her break when an actress in a principal role suddenly dropped out. Jessica cheerfully admits it wasn't her prodigious talent or charm that inspired the director to tap her to take over the part. It was her hair, which matched the original performer's. The two week job stretched to two months, and Jessica ended the film with an impressive first credit.

Real Life Quotes

"I'm good at being sarcastic with guys. They don't want the quiet, prissy little things."
"I like Spongebob Squarepants. He's goofy, like me."
Best advice mother has given to her: "Speak your mind. That's a good one. Unfortunately, I speak my mind a little too often."
"I don't like to schmooze, and I don't like to talk to people I don't know. I'm not going to go up and talk to them just because they're someone who makes films. If they want me to be in their movie, they're going to call my agents and ask for a meeting. They're not going to care if they saw me at a party and offered me their number. That's bullsh**."
Us Weekly quotes Jessica Alba talking about her character in 'Sin City': "It was originally drawn naked. But I couldn't really imagine my father seeing me butt-naked."
Asked what's on her Tivo by Us Weekly, Jessica Alba responded, "The Food Network. I think I'm a chef, but I'm not!"

The girl just tans well that's all. ;) She does have a strong European background, so I'm sure those genes impact her complexion. However, the other ethnicity running in her blood obviously allows her to tan well too. So she's got the best of both worlds, no big deal. The point is, she has been able to tone her body up and be groomed in a way to portray this role effectively. And that's an "actress" for ya.

From what I've been told no. The trend these days in Hollywood is to use bronzers...I have a feeling alot of the tan we saw on Jessica early on was from Bronzers...she is very aware of sun damage...so probably there was very little lightener used if any...also in Dark Angel (which was filmed in Vancouver)...by the 3rd episode she had lost much of the tan she started out with...there just isn't alot of sunlight in Vancouver...and from friends that live there...they have had a particularly rainy fall this year.

You know what? Hollywood isn't the only that uses those things---they've become more mainstream. My boss uses them. She's white as a sheet of Xerox paper without it. But when she comes out--she's practically as dark as I am--albeit looks rather otherworldly on her. But...whatever. I never understood why white people want to tan their skin darker, especially with all the risks out there from skin cancer and sun damage. I mean, some tan naturally well, but some try sooooo hard, to the point of wrinkling their skin. Then 20-something year olds start looking like 50.

But my father is white, and he jokingly claims he does it to keep up with my mom. LOL

And in France, Jean Claude Van Damme is a famous humorist, but don't tell he doesn't know this

"oxygen, it's important, if you remove the oxygen, all the birds will fall from the sky"

"you know, all these stuffes with Adam, Eve and th apple.... I don't believe in it.... you know, Apple is good for you, it is full of pectine"

I really flipped when I saw this pic in a comic book. It resembles Jessica so closely it's downright scary. I think this deserves to be developed into a thread blaster of some kind--ya know, something for the haters. Anyone got any ideas? :D

So, did Alba use makeup to lighten her face for this role, or what? Why do you ask, Sardaukar?:p I don't think she did....at least nothing beyond Rachel Mc Adam's standard way of powdering HER face...., Hey Alba fan, can you please post some pictures of Jessi, ones that are too old to show any sign of her doing this role PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE ?....because from what I've seen, she does in fact have lots of photos with light hair looking just like she does now, minus the blue eyes. Lets see the proof.

Aaaaaaaand...how does any of this relate in any form or fashion to Susan Storm Richards AKA The Invisible Woman? We've already got an "Official Off-topic" thread in existence. So can we please stay on topic in this one--it's too early for this young thread to be derailed already. Damn.

A french director has made a movie in USA (a big crap), this movie is "Just visiting" with Jean Reno.... The name of the director is Jean marie Poiré... but the studio execs decided Poiré was too difficult to say for American people, so they changed it into Jean Marie Gaubert........ Who is not fair???
I've seen the French version that Jean Reno did first, but haven't seen the American one yet. Did the same director do both?

When it was first announced that Alba would play Sue, I along with many others was apprehensive.....but as pics were released and I saw how they had her looking, I am pleased with the casting now.

Nice thread lightnin,
To me Jess seem's to enbody a nice mix of sexiness, strength and protectiveness in the little bits weve seen so far.
To me rather than mothering i see her simply as the glue that holds the group together,She's the only one that really understands reed and can give him support but at the same time she can rationalise things if his scientific mind is getting out of hand,She also keeps johnny and ben in check when their fighting gets out of hand.I think when sheuse her shiled to protect the FF from physical attack it is kind of symbolic of how she protects her family period.

And here I was thinking Bweurk was referring to PITOF (Catwoman)! Well, that was crap too!

Anyway, Hunter Rider, I haven't seen Jessica act before, and I'm trying to avoid seeing her in action until next summer. I don't want any preconcieved notions in my head. But Kel (Albafan) says she will be able to portray the essence of Susan Storm perfectly, and I trust Kel's judgement on such matters regarding Jessica. So...we'll see.

And that's the power of the retrospective: I didn't know THEN what I know NOW. :D It's apparent that the casting directors knew what options they were working with a bit more than some of us fans did.

Aye, Hunter Rider--ESPECIALLY that Kaydee chick. I saw her in "Anacondas: The Hunt For the Blood-Red Orchid" and while her acting was decent, she just looked terrible to me. I remember sitting in the theatre thinking "And they were considering THIS for Susan Storm?" Even though she was obviously young, she came across OLD. And she isn't that attractive--she had very strong and hard facial features, and a rather gumpy body. And while I love Julia Stiles, her face is simply too big for the role. It's just round...like the sun.

We have to keep in mind that the on-screen chemistry between the actress and Ioan Gruffudd has to be hot and believable. Looking at those choices, I can't see ANY of those actresses making a good-looking couple with Ioan. Period. Rachel was my choice for a while, but after Ioan was cast, I was thinking, "she's gonna look pubescent next to him."

Well here are some pics of Jessica pretty much what her natural skin tone is...I really didn't want to get into a debate on skin color...but was asked to find some pics...

All are with her normal hair color...and of course the last few are the most recent pics with blond hair...

This pic was last July right before she colored her hair again for the part of Sue...in fact there is a picture with her and Hutch Parker from Fox talking, probably hammering out last minute details for the part of Sue...
http://img19.exs.cx/img19/2385/irobot011.jpg

Oh I totally am with you on that Flight! The Invisible Woman is probably my favorite Marvel heroine, second only to the Weather Goddess Storm. While I love Halle Berry and think she coooould be the consummate Ororo Munroe, I can't stand the way the Fox movie writers and Bryan Singer have portrayed her in X1 and X2. Both films leave a lot to be desired. So that's why I can really relate to that angst that fills my fellow comrades in this forum regarding Dr. Doom.

When the news suddenly hit that Jessica Alba was up for this role, I was furious--ask Kel--I was like a tornado out of control. Like I said, the IW is like my 2nd fave Marvel female character of ALL TIME. So after jacking up Storm and then I was seeing all of these darkly-tanned Alba pics swirling on the net, I was like "What the f*** is Fox's problem in casting female heroes in their movies? Why can't they get it right?"

;) I'm calm now. Because at least aesthetically, for Susan Storm, they've got it right--and I'm sure I'll have no complaints after seeing the finished product in live action.

True. But I don't think she has to be necessarily "Aged" like that in THIS movie however. In the sequels to come yeah, but being Johnny's guardian doesn't require the "nurturing" aspect does it? She's keeping his, Ben's and Reed's azzes in line. But she doesn't "nurture" them though--if anything, she only "nurtures" Franklin and Valeria--her children.

I just don't want her to be all "even though I'm a girl, I can still kick ass" the whole movie, just like I don't want her being a damsel in distress or anything. I want her to seem like an ordinary woman thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Sure, she can fight if she needs to and be a mother to the rest, but that's not what she's usually like. Usually she's just an everyday, normal person because, if anybody on the team is normal, it's her.

I'm not lobbying for Rachel or anything; I don't think she looks the part all that much. I'm just saying that, going by Ioan's age, Sue should look pretty darn young.

Yeah but when you get into all of the current controversies surrounding pedophiles like R.Kelly with underage fledglings, it makes me wonder if they (Fox) steered clear of the 16 year age gap between Reed and Sue ON PURPOSE, and instead adopted the "Ultimate Fantastic Four" timeline.

Agreed. Technically speaking Sue Richards really didn't become a "kick-ass chick" until after Reed's "Death" when she assumed leadership of the team. This is a graphic from those years...when she was dangerous...

http://www.gifmaniacos.com/4_fantasticos/invisiblegirl01.gif

She was equally dangerous as Malice, but we can't really count that one because she temporarily lost her sanity during that era. I remember reading the Malice issues and thinking, "Damn, Sue is on some different **** in these stories!"

Well, to me, Jessica doesn't look any older than about 23 (her actual age, coincidentally) so, if they were aiming to avoid that issue, they didn't do too well. Ioan and her still look about 10 years apart. It'll be pretty hard to buy her as a 29-year-old doctor of genetic research.

I think her age being so young gives her a mark that she's exceptional. It's her emotional side that needs the natural normalities Marvel exploits with their characters.....but they don't send simpletons into space (except Justin Timberlake, they even changed their mind about him)!:p

I'd be perfectly fine if she was aspiring to be the Director of Genetic Research. In fact, she could be a graduate student or at least a lower-level experimental scientist. Instead, she's already climbed to the top of the ladder before she's hit 30. This isn't really something I have a big problem with; it just doesn't seem logical and a lot of people may kinda' do a double take when they hear it.

I'm so tired of that argument. Just because they have superpowers doesn't mean nothing has to make sense. Why not just give them all flying unicorns to ride?

The key to good sci-fi is to make it believable. The best way to go about this is by sticking to the "leap of faith" theory, which I believe was thought up by TheSlag. See, because it is sci-fi, there has to be some bending of the truth and the audience has to go along with this; a "leap of faith", if you will. But this doesn't mean that other laws don't apply and that anything goes. The best sci-fi requires only one leap of faith and sticks to the truth in all other aspects. In the case of the Fantastic Four, that leap is that these characters are granted with these amazing abilities. Everything else should make perfect sense and be quite logical. Otherwise, the story no longer becomes believable and the audience just won't care. Asking them to believe that Sue could advance so far in the scientific field at such a young age would be another leap and could very easily take them out of the movie. Logic like this is extremely important in a movie like this because, without out it, the movie just won't make sense and the people will be unable to become involved while watching it.

great thread idea Lightnin'! i for one didn't have any doubts when i heard Jessica got the role of Sue. i was optimistic and wanted to give her a chance, and from the pictures and press so far i am very pleased! Jessica looks very classy, sophisticated and mature in all of the on set pictures we have seen so far. she has the nuturing personality, but its subtle! she will be the one that holds the group together when things get chaotic and Ben and Johnny are having one of their disputes. like others have said, her and Ioan make a great on screen couple :) Jess and Chris also share a lot of similar facial characteristics like Lightnin pointed out as well. i'm very happy with Jessica as Sue Storm

No Snaz, I don't think so. We have to keep in mind that these audiences that support comic movies have likely already seen Spider-Man--wherein Mary Jane Watson is already an aspiring actress. She will still be on folks minds. People will think, "So all of the female leads in these movies are 'aspiring actresses'?" So this will be a twist that we haven't seen...at least since Jennifer Connelly's character played a scientist in "Hulk".

Read my later post where I said she should be a graduate student or at least lower-level research scientist. I wasn't actually trying to suggest she should be an actress, just that she isn't really supposed to be on the same level as Reed, intelligence-wise. Holding such a position in a company like that at that age would require her to be beyond a genius.

Yes I saw your latter points and agree with the direction you're coming from. However, in today's business world, young people are getting these six-figure salaries like there is no tommorrow. My job has several highly-paid women who have reached the level of director in only a few years. It boils down to whatever connections they've played, and little with the amount of smarts they have.

The same may not hold true for Susan Storm however. Besides, this movie is supposed to be set somewhat in the future.

"When she was 12, she met Reed Richards (then 23) at her aunt's bording house. She was quite infatuated and tried to keep tabs on Reed for years to come."

Wait, what? If I may quote Dazzler in Ultimate X-Men 53, "He's gotta be, like, twice her age. That is hot."

you're on a roll! the minority of women on this board do deserve "eye candy" just as much as the boys. plus the cast has mostly men in it, you would think it would be the other way around. more pictures of them and only few of Jess because she is the only female FF member. we want more set pictures of Ioan, Chris and Julian ..we have seen a lot of Michael as the thing too.

i don't know if that helped the cause? you had lots of good reasons already though. i am still a Jess supporter as well, i just want to see more of our FF guys :) and Julian :doom:

Wow. So we have an aunt (Aunt Petunia) a mother figure (Albafan) a little sister (Kmack) and a Big Sister (SurferGIRL).
