Like Cho could be bothered:
He's having too much fun with the She-devil.

But I'm holding to my Guns that THIS CHARACTER is head and shoulders above "X-23"

I'm just so tired of Marvel "creating" new characters w/o trying to develop the ones created before.

Squirrel Gurl shoulda already been at Xaivers, if Ironman were true to type.

Elijya was the one with the Liefeld Rules T-shirt. I just came up with the picture idea.

And my Nick Fury comics were in my attache case, not a backpack. :p

Besides that, if a girl is in costume at a convention, then there's a good chance she would be interested in a comic geek. Though from the description of the costume, she was probably to young for me.

I can't believe there's a 4 page thread on squirrell girl...

Iceman, she basically looks like a squirrell. She has a tail, buck teeth, can climb trees, and can communicate with squirells. As an after thought, and an attempt to make her slightly 'cooler', she has a small knuckle spike on each hand. She was actually created by Steve Ditko (guy who originally drew Spider-Man). She only ever appeared once in a Marvel Summer Special, where she begged Iron Man to let him be her sidekick (guess how that went) and then defeated Dr. Doom

I'm of the opinion that Cho could make Aunt May look good,..

What the writers at Marvel don't realize that characters like this could be so much more,...

For example:
Why hasn't Doom tried to track her down and punish her for getting in his way?

Why has IronMan had no second thought about the girl on his property?

Why has cerebro never picked her up? She would register fairly strong based on her level of mutation?

Are we sure she is modeled after a squirrel? what other animals does she emulate?

When she first appeared she was a teen. In Marvel tradition you don't max out on your mutant abilities until somewhere in your twenties. What can she do now? control more than rodents?

sigh,.. not to mention her weaknesses,..

Anything is better than original design tho… I still don’t think a serious tone could work for this character, squirrels just aren’t threatening creatures. Unlike wolves and wolverines which the other characters are based off of.

Anyways, anyone got any ideas for the character’s history? I was thinking a good name for her would be Chipper J. We can always think of this as Ultimate Squirrel Girl.

I’ll have some more designs coming up, like a cutesey version of the Owl and other lesser known villains. If anyone wants to pitch a redesign for a villian, feel free. A picture and history would help if you do so."

The bottom line in my view regarding "SquirrelGirl"

that - sad to say,.... this "one shot character" with "sucky" powers had in one issue more "depth", more "history that made sense," more motivation, and more originality than the last two years of "new female" heroes in the marvel universe.

those witches with doc strange sucked and needed a butt-whooping
the entire series that intro'd x-23 including x-23 herself sucked,.. geez,.. if you wanted a wolverine female shoulda stuck with "native" who they killed casually.

the only new fem I can appreciate is yet ANOTHER spider woman / girl.

and I'm waiting for them to mess that up.

I thought there were maybe 6 people total in the world that can say that and mean it.

We have about twenty here who agree that if done right they would pick it up.

And a number of Old head comic readers who admit that while sucky in some ways,.. they'd try it too.

If I knew the format that a comic book is set to in the developmental stages, I'd make a 6 issue arc (Snapping Fingers*) like that. I'm full of story ideas for a solitary mutant with a positive attitude and squirrel powers.

There was a "magic" lost that Marvel had in introducing new characters that I feel the lack of.

Nowadays the teens seem to be protrayed as stupid adults,...

Kitty Pride in her first dipiction had "sucky" powers, no strength, very smart, but extremely naieve.

Now thanks to fairly okay writing, she a popular character more for her history than her abilities.

I understand exactly what you mean. Marvel's multi-dimensional characters always kept me coming and I forever remained loyal to Marvel because of that. Now that I'm older though, I'm looking at DC's Vertigo line as what Marvel used to be (just that now Vertigo is much better). For instant, Morrison is starting a new title called Seven Soldiers, where he's taken some of DC's old characters. People like Zatanna (who's always frequented titles like Books of Magic) etc.

There are too many overgeneralizations made in order to successfully avoid the problem you're addressing. It's a shame, but it's true.

If you want to know the format I can pm you. Different writers have different styles, it usually depends on hom much freedom you want to allow your artist or how much detail you want to put into your story.

and sorry to say it....but the new Spider-Girl sucks.

i've got a couple ideas;
1. Her name (which was never revealed, right?) IMO sholud be "Dale Ditko", in reference to Steve Ditko (her creator), those cartoon chipmunks Chip and Dale, and it follows Stan Lee's unwritten rule for superhero names being alliterations.
2. Since I'm assuming she's a mutant, I'll play off of the "social outcast" theme, but instead of hatred for mutants, she'd be made fun of for having buck teeth (not a good feature for a girl in her early teens)
3. I'd also base her in a suburban town with a nearby wooded area, just makes sense
4. I think the tone of the stories should be offbeat and slightly (but not gratuituosly) goofy. I'll use Monkey Joe for most of the comic relief.

Discuss.

I was thinking it's been a couple of years since Iron Man and SG met, he's taken her in as sort of a silent partner. He's paid for her training and gear, but keeps their relationship under wraps since he's embarrassed by it. He always sends her to deal with his lame ass villians, while he goes and makes out with women.

I'd have SG as an isolated child who lived in the forest by herself, but has studied normal humans and tried to fit in multiple occassions. When SG starts becoming a household name herself after exceeding Iron Man's expectations, he'd get jealous and send her to a private school to keep her busy from superhero business. He'd say it's a school for superhero sidekicks, but no one is allowed to talk about their secret identities. In reality, it's just a normal school.

And BTW, Iron Man did get Doom's defeat by squirrels on tape, and there'd be a scene of the Avengers gathered around a viewscreen, laughing their asses off at it.

1. I was thinking of her having a real jacked up first name,.. something common two centuries ago. Abigail, Constance, etc,... Dale is a guys name,...

Becuase as an outcast,.. I want her mom to have run off with her becuase like knightcrawler,.. she was born with the tail. Mom names her after some heroine written back in the 1800she's raised in the wilderness by her mom the ultimate teacher at homeschooling who is killed by doom by mistake in his first attempt at capturing Squirrelgirl for study and disposal.

2. On the teeth? Would she be looking toward cosmetic surgery?
Hmmmn,.. real squirels go regenerate teeth real quick.

3.I agree with #3,.. only what small town is near a Stark facility?

4. Maybe we could have a sidebar of her power that the squirrels she works the most closley with get a boost in intelligence and an extended lifespan?

SuperFerret
12-14-2004, 04:03 PM
Ok, we can ditch the name, Varient. And about the town why don't we just make one up, have it be a place where all the employees for the nearby Stark facility live.

I've always seen her as a young adult, somewhere near 19 or 20 working a full-time job to keep up with her rent and other bills. She has another job which she is using to help her save up enough money to advance the image inducer she's been working on since she turned 13 (the only flaw is that the image projected by the image inducer only remains for short amount of time, while she would like it to remain for as long as she desires). The connection she has with other animals (i.e. squirrels) should make her life easier, as far as getting food or other things are involved. For instance, who says she can't scold a squirrel as she wonders whether it actually did find the $100.00 dollars it brought to her on the ground or if it somehow sneaked it away from someone else. This connection should also in some way form her religious views. Her mutation should also be the cause of most of her financial problems, given that she would have a high metabolism and certain urges. She would definitely need to appear in a popular title a couple of times before getting her own title, because not everyone is going to respond to her like we are. My suggestion is that she either appears in a Spider-Man title as a new neighbor (or a substitute teacher in Midtown High or whatever the name of the school is) or she could reappear in Iron Man as an intern working for Stark Enterprises. X-Men would be nice, but the X-Universe seems to be too focused on other things at the moment. Wherever she appears, I think it'd work if something forces her to use her abilities as best as possible. Speaking of which.....

Squirrells are known for their intelligence as well, so I'm thinking her mutation may also have a great affect on her mental capacity. They are also known as solitary animals (despite what we may see) so I see her as being more of a loner type, gentler than Wolverine, but still for the most part she often does things on her own (thus her keeping her own apartment). She should have enhanced senses or some form of extra sensory perception (because squirrels are allowed a wider field of vision before they must turn their head to see). Oh yeah, throw in enhanced agility as well.

And somewhere along the line, have it be revealed that she used to be Squirrel-Girl, of course she refuses to admit it even when Tony Stark finally notices her and almost goes to the point of harassing her about it every day at work. In a way she should be treated with a bit less respect than Spider-Man is by other super heroes, because as often happens in real life, people fail to notice that she is actually good at this, despite how out of this world her abilities are.

About her name, it should be changed to something cooler than Squirrel-Girl. Maybe still Squirrel Girl just in another language. Just something that sounds a bit more dignifying.

That in drawing Squirrel girl the way she has been it is a short step for the artist to do the same san's clothing?

Just a thought.

In my version there are alot of panty shots and implied nudity of Squirrel Girl and various other marvel female characters.

Also, she has hundreds of squirrels employed at her base. Sort of a squirrel NASA, where they provide her with information and support. I think I'll have them in white collar shirts and ties. Monkey Joe will be a genetically altered squirrel, or a cosmic being in disguise, don't know yet, but he pilots SG around in her heli-jet, a throw away invention from Stark Enterprises.

I prefer ThorneFox's take on the character. I believe that to avoid a one demensional character you have to build and environment for them to interact with that goes well beyond her obscure history. Taking into consideration aspects like her real life will shape a stronger character than focusing or forcing a connection to that history. The marvel universe as it stands now may be more of a hinderence. Placing her in the Ultimate universe may give more freedom. Also, the proximity of a forest isnt necessarily a must but a park or natural area could suffice. In fact, squirrels exist quite well in urban locales.

Her past could be fleshed out a bit. I am not sure if a nightcrawler correlation could be made in modern comic universe. It greatly depends where in the country she was born. Although, the idea of a tramatic youth would add to her isolationist tendency, strenghtening her inbred instincts and feeding into the human/beastial conflict (not in a Logan sense).

Actually, initially I saw SG as accidently getting involved in a superhero conflict. Somehow she (as was the case with Doom) a significant part of the victory. This would lead the villian to hold a grudge, which SG would not realize for a while. The villian would then hire mercs (non-super or superpowered) to knock off this little tarnish to their image. The villian would do this with a third party to avoid reprisal from the hero he fought. The first arc would involve this "Hunting Squirrels" (sounds sorta redneck). What can still be done with this as a paralell story is; what the hell is like to be SG. Rent, job and social life.

If this were placed into the Ultimate U, where everything sorta revolves around super-soldier engineering, SG could be linked to programs at Osborn labs (or that guy that was invloved w/Doc Ock). A part of her life could be coming to terms with this. she could have a Sheild case worker that keeps tabs on her. She could also meet others who were part of the program. This could be an area to let out some cheese by introducing every lame animal based villian/hero rejects (maybe even face-lifting some of them out of disgrace).

I think I've written more than enough of my own tangent opinion. I have done more drawings for squirrel girl but theyre in pencil. It take a while to colour them (partly cause I dont know how to do it faster), so if no one minds i'll post them. I would love for some eager colourist to have at them.............anyone?

Anyways Varient, again greay job keeping this rolling.

I'm taking this seriously. I need an outlet for my creativity, especially now with school out til Feb. This Squirrel Girl thing is perfect, the off-the-wall feel is right up my alley, and since the character hasn't been used in years it gives me a chance to help flesh out a character from the ground up. Plus, unlike some writers coughbendiscough, I enjoy the challenge of writing for new and different characters.

BTW no offense Fox, but I like squirrel boy's ideas better than yours, not that yours aren't good, I just see squirrel girl as a younger "Teen Titans" type of character.

That's all fine SuperFerret. We all have our preferences and our different visions for the character. I understand that my take on the character is a bit darker, but then again I also want to be a horror/hard fantasy writer so it's expected.

I guess the only reason why we differ is because, though I think the current Teen Titans show is cool (haven't read the comic) it only seems to work because it's DC.

BOTTOM LINE FOR ME:

EVERY IDEA PUT FORTH FOR SQUIRREL GURL IS A GREAT ONE AND I WOULD READ ANY OF THE IDEAS PLACED IN COMIC BOOK FORM.

Now -

As you guys continue to flesh her out and make her real,... exactly who would we have to email to see if we can get in line to pitch her to a Marvel Editor for a short Arc or one shot?

U can't tell me that Marvel COMPLETLY ignores the messageboards. The amount of obvious talent being CASUALLY tossed onto this is staggering. AND THE ART AND IDEAS ARE AWESOME!!!!!

Hey, no prob. I do like your vision, it just clashes with my idea of the character, not to say either is better, they're just different. I like darker storylines as well, just not for every character. IMO that's why McFarlane's Spider-Man wasn't too good, too dark for the character (I still love Torment tho). To each their own.

Going over the entire thread,.. you are the only one who seems to want to twist the idea of a semi serious character completely into the absurd.

a "NASA" of squirrels?
call her "Chipper Dale?"
Monkey Joe "In a tie?"

Sigh.

Your suggestions would work with animaniacs,.. but would further twist a possibly good character farther from the light of publication.

I've read five different views of her including both mine and your own,.. and yours is the only one that dispenses with dignity for the character.

continuing to get a grasp of her...
Bobby hesitated as he was about to take a picture of the Massive Redwood.

He'd Laid down on his back to get a perspective shot that took in the large branches when he noticed a creature scuttling out on one branch before leaping to another.

By the bushy tail almost as long as it's body, he assumed it was a squirrel.

A moment later, he realized that perspective and respective size of the branch the squirrel was moving along would make it as large as he was,...

He snapped a string of photos in fast succession, the flash of his camera strobing a black and white simulated lightning in the great forest.

The "Squirrel" appeared to pause,.. before quickly vanishing with a flick of its tail.

Bobby rubbed his eyes and figured it was time for a dinner with a beer,... At the last moment when the squirrel looked down,.. Bobby could swear that the face peering at him was that of a woman.

Later at the local greasy spoon catering to the tourist crowd with authentic imitation rustic food fresh out of a can,.. Bobby sat down to a large plate of steak and Potatoes.

He was pondering the thought of giant squirrels to go with giant trees when his attention was drawn to the jingleing of bells signifying the entrance of another person in search of rustic substance.

She was pretty, for a gurl geek with glasses, with mouse brown hair done up in lighterbrown highlights, and except for a small potbelly that was completly covered by an overlarge sweatshirt that probably originally belonged to her father or boyfriend, had the sort of shape she could appreciate.

The place was crowded, so it was no real surprise when she walked up, smiled, and said a little too fast:

"Hello - would you mind if I shared your table for dinner? I'll Pay for my own and only need a place to sit."

Bobby nodded with his mouth full considering himself lucky,.. close up this girl was a total babe with the glasses doing nothing to hide her beauty. Her skin was perfect like a living mask and her teeth were so white and even,...

He didn't nind the fact that even with those teeth she spoke with a slight lisp.

He was so excited that he did most of the talking, Explaining that he was on vacation from New York and normally worked for the Daily Bugle, but needed a break from the superhero overload that he and other photographers had to deal with.

It wasn't that he didn't like catching the Avengers in action or snapping Spiderman swinging by he quickly added when he saw her elfin features scrunch up in displeasure.

It was just that he wanted to take pictures of things more on the ordinary.
This made her smile and she nodded at the camera.

"Take my picture?"

"Sure,..."
he almost knocked the camera off the table in his eagerness to get a shot at the young fox picking at her nutbread and sipping tea.

He decided right then that he wanted a whole roll for just her,... and her phone number.

He quickly swapped out rolls of film, placing the almost completly used roll on the table between them.

She picked it up.

"Were you taking pictures today?"

Bobby tried to keep one eye on her while messing with the camera.
"yes I was, got some good redwood pictures too."

She fumbled and dropped the roll of film under the table.
"Whoops,.. I'll get it" she smiled her apology and ducked under the table.

For Bobby,.. things happened a little too fast from that point on.

He heard a *Pop* like something being punctured with a thumb tac followed by a chittering under the table.

Bobby looked up in surprise as a Squirrel scuttled from under the table with something in his mouth.

At that moment the pretty girl cracked her head up under the table while obviously trying to catch the squirrel.

"Owwwww!!!"
She looked so cute and vulnerable on her behind rubbing her head that he stopped his immediate urge to go after thye squirrel,.. and instead reached down and helped her up.

She was heavier than she looked,.. and using both hands he got close enough to smell a mild musky scent from her that he found mildly erotic for some reason.

She apologized for letting the squirrel get away with his roll of film. He was so fogged by her close proximity that he didn't care.

He paid for her meal, got her phone number, took a boatload of pictures of her - and with a word from her saying she may be available for hiking tomorrow went back to his lil cabin with thoughts of maybe a proper date after spending the day hiking with her.

He didn't see her for the rest of the trip, when he called her number,.. he got a branch of Stark Enterprises in New Jeresy that knew her but said she was out ufn.

While his feelings were hurt, he couldn't blame her for dumping him,.. he wasn't that great looking a guy,.....

On a refurbished Avengers Quinjet Squirrelgirl reclined relaxed with Monkey Joe in her lap Chrring in pleasure as she scratched his belly.
The relaxed pose was disrupted by the quick snaps and jerks of the tip of her tail which exposed her real mood.

Her prostetics and makeup removed, including the tail brace that made her look fat when she was walking among normals - Squirrel girl was a grey skinned beauty with flat black pupils and a large bushy tail.

"Still wishing you were back with the boy huh?" This from Tony Stark as he stepped from the cockpit of the adjusted Quinjet.

"Yeah,.. I really wish I coulda got to know him better,.. he was nice she sighed wistfully.

Stark Stopped by her couch and scratched her behind one ear in a proprietary manner.
"Tired of the old man hmmmmn?"

Squirrel Girl Arced her back in obvious pleasure while chtting at him in her throat.
"If we had anything,.... You could say that,.. but it's been you telling me over and over how you don't play with little girls - so don't tease me Tony."

Changing the subject, Tony removed his hand when the girl tried to move to get him to start on her shoulders.
"You were right,.. he had a good 6 pictures of you running around in naked - you really need to keep your clothes on when you're outside."

"yeah, yeah, you didn't complain when you watched Jocasta have me strip for my prostetics,.. don't be a hypocrite."

Tony shook his head before tossing a phile filled with naked Squirrelgirl on her chest before moving toward the cockpit.
"Be ready in about 35 minutes,.. I'll drop you off in Jersey before I get back to the mansion,.. you've had your break so don't let me hear about you skipping school."

This was met by an amused chittering from both joe and the girl.

Tony sat down in the pilots seat continuing to shake his head.
"How did I pick up this stray?"

End.

SquirrelGirl Was bored.

"But then what do you expect for a stakeout?" she told herself again for the 6th time in 2 hours.

Monkey Joe had returned to Central Park, SquirrelGirl's temporary base of operations, so the Girl had nothing to do to keep her out of trouble.
So she sat on top of the Mitchell Building across from Hawaiian Paradise the next business that Iron Man's intelligence said would be hit by that wannabe super criminal The Spot.

"Well I don't think he really wants to be a criminal" She corrected herself, "Everytime I run into him he acts like he doesn't know what he wants."

The las time they'd Met, The Spot was surprised by Squirrel Girl at Dole Produce.
Tony had given her strict instructions to just stay hidden and determine what the guy was after, and if possible, put a tracer on him for later pickup,.. but she was determined to prove herself,.. so she tried for a capture.

She leaped at him from a tall stack of pallets.

The poor slob actually said "Sorry" as he placed one of his Teleporting spots in her path and she suddenly found herself flying headfirst into the Hudson river. The entire tone of the encounter was one of he was being forced to be bad,.. Something IronMan Chuckled into her face and told her to understand that villians who steal food were not bright enough even see that as bad.

He then gave her another assignment tracking down the Kangaroo and slapping a tracer on him.

Now here she was a week later waiting for the spots Teleporting effect to register on the Stark Tech she had built into her Hooded Jumpsuit.

Plenty of time to re-evaluate her situation with Tony Stark.

The Jumpsuit was a vast improvement on her own attempts at a costume,.. and much more comfortable. Like Stark Liked to tell her many times while putting it together,
"Form Follows Function."

Normally Black and Brown with Fur trim around the hood, Wrists and Boot tops, It had the latest version of Starks tescalated Armor tech woven into it, giving her limited stealth ability and making her bulletproof up to Armor piercing. After the embarrassment of trying to fly using first boot jets, then glider wings, then a backpack,.. Stark stopped trying and simply augmented her natural abilities so she can continue to travel by leaping and climbing.

With the proportional abilities of a squirrel, She could with effort bench roughly two tons and "scamper" in excess of 75 MPH in a straight line. with the jumpsuit her strength was increased using the same smart material that allowed stark to pick up an egg in Ironman armor.

All this she thought becuase Stark was feeling like he should help the girl that helped him against Doom.

After she refused to Go with him to Upstate NewYork to some School of Higher learning called Xaivers,.. he'd made it his business to raise her standard of living, building her a proper place to live and giving her training in the use of equipment that he said she must have if she's going to be a Superhero.
He Opined that she should make friends among the superhero community and had pointed her in the direction of real dweebs like the human Rocket and Handball,... goofball,.. some guy who bounced around like a ball.

Then to top it off, even though he was keeping his promise to let her get into crimefighting as his secret weapon,.. she was definetly feeling that he was fosting off the villians below a certain level on her to help him keep track of these losers.

She thought back to when the Avengers seemed to self destruct around the scarlet witch.
IronMan had the forthought to send some guy in green Armor to her fortress and virtually sit on her when the stuff hit the fan. The rude guy in Green told her to call him "Happy" and said that Tony Knew she'd come running as soon as the Mansion was attacked.

The fact that he didn't want her at his back while she watched Ultron, then Those Aliens attacking New York hurt her feelings,.. until she'd heard that seasoned heroes like Ant Man and Hawkeye - HAWKEYE!!! had been killed.

Suddenly she couldn't reach Tony, and all sorts of strange characters started showing up and teaching stuff against her will.
first:
Some woman called Natasha beat her into bad health w/o any obvious superpowers but taught her a passing knowledge of hand to hand.
Then some canadian french woman ran her ragged by working at her hand eye coordination at her fastest speed.
Some guy calling himself the prowler was no help at all since she made it obvios that she could climb much better than he could.
The creepiest was some rat dude that she found she could control sorta like she did Monkey Joe, yet he was always trying to get her to "do things". But before he was taken away in glowing restraints he gave her tips on tracking and using her senses of smell and hearing.

Her musing on her neverending training was interrupted by the silient vibration from the suit that indicated the arrival of the Spot.

"This time she'd stop him," she thought as she jumped the intervening space between buildings.

Once inside she creeped until she was positioned in the darkness above the door he would come through.

She heard him talking as he approached.

"No sign of her yet sir,.. I don't think she's here, do you still want me to go thru with this?"
There was a pause as he listened to a long winded reply.
"Okay,.. but I don't see her anywhere,... Spot out."

"Now what was that about?" she thought to herself - the strangness of the convo enough to keep her from leaping on him as he came thru the door.

She silently watched the spot enter the room, use his powers to reach into asealed wall vault, and pull out a deli sandwich.

Now completly confused she decided to just tag him and go.
Easy enough, her "squirrel tracer dart that she could trigger by a twitch of her wrist embedded itself into the guys boot w/o a sound.

The spot looked down to see what he'd bummped with his boot then went back to his sandwich.

As she started to creep out of the room across the ceiling, The Spot finished his sandwich and pulled out a familar looking communicator.

Something made by Stark.

" Spot to Dispatch - I've been here thru the window of operational activity, I'd say it's a bust for tonights training, permission to call it a night."

The voice on the other end was Tinny but recognizable to the Squirrel.

"Ok buddy,.. call it quits, I'll send the Widow out to find her,.. she's probably asleep in a tree somewhere."

The voice was Tony Stark.

End.

Squirrel Girl was gathering acorns in Central Park when she heard what seemed to be a child's scream.

"Ahhhhh. Help! Mommy! Daddy!" shrieked a small blonde boy with a blue sweater on. Squirrel Girl leaped from the comforting branches of her favorite elm tree and landed with squirrel precision right next to the child.

"What's wrong little camper? There's no need to fear now. Squirrel Girl is on the scene." The little boy looked up with his tear streaked blue eyes and whimpered, "My mommy and daddy got taken away. They just went 'whoosh' and disappeared with the Bad Man." Squirrel Girl noticed the symbol on the child's sweater for the first time. It appeared to be a numeral four and a half symbol right next to it.

"Uhh. Just who are your parents, little guy?" she asked. "Everyone know them. Their the Tastic Four." he replied.

"I know I'm gonna regret this, but just exactly who is the Bad Man?" The little boy looked at Squirrel Girl with the cutest face she'd ever seen.

"He's the Bad Man. He's Doc'or Doom. Will you help me find them Squirrel Girl? I miss them alot and I'm worried 'bout them. I bet you're even more powerful than Spidey-Man! Please say you'll help."

Under "Why Squirrel Girl would work":
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
Original Medium: Comic books
Published by: Marvel Comics
First Appeared: 1962
Creators: Stan Lee (writer/editor) and Steve Ditko (artist)
In 1962, with the superhero revival in full swing, Marvel Comics began to convert its left-over sci-fi/monster comics to the new/old genre. One of those titles didn't quite fit the mold, and it spawned a hero that didn't fit the mold either. Amazing Adult Fantasy ("adult" denoting maturity of taste, not necessarily of legal status), which showcased the unconventional art of Steve Ditko (as directed by writer/editor Stan Lee), was the birthplace of Spider-Man. The adjective which, to this day, is titularly associated with the hero is a reference to that place of origin.

Spidey didn't seem engineered for success. For one thing, the motif was questionable ("spiders — ewww!"). For another, the comic he debuted in, never a high seller, was about to be cancelled. Re-titled Amazing Fantasy in a last-ditch effort to expand readership by not appearing restrictive, it ended with #15 (August, 1962) — the very same issue that contained Spidey's debut. The character would have sunk straight into oblivion, had the fans not emphatically — and unexpectedly — demanded more. Apparently, a lot of people found something to identify with in Peter Parker (Spidey's secret identity). He went into regular publication with the March, 1963 releases.

Peter started out as an embittered wimp, the kid everybody in school picked on. When he became super-powerful (by being bitten by a radioactive spider), it never entered his head to become a superhero. Instead, he used his power to cash in. He became a superhero only after his not bothering to stop a crime led directly to the murder of his beloved Uncle Ben. The last line of the first Spider-Man story, "With great power comes great responsibility", has echoed down through his career, as he continued for years to try to atone for that one refusal to act.

The other kids continued to pick on Peter, although they adored Spider-Man. With newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson, it was the other way around — Jameson loved buying pictures from Peter Parker, but hated Spidey, and used his position to crusade against the wall-crawler. Driven by guilt and harassed from all sides, Spider-Man would have been better off if that radioactive spider had bitten someone else.

Ditko left the character in 1966, but Lee stayed on. He no longer writes comic books, but since its inception in 1977, has scripted the Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip.

Peter Parker gradually matured and found a niche for himself in the social milieu. Meanwhile, Spidey assembled a typical Rogues' Gallery of regular villains, including Dr. Octopus, The Vulture, and The Green Goblin. He graduated from high school in 1965, and eventually from college as well.

A milestone in Spidey's personal odyssey occurred in 1973 when his girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, was killed during one of his battles with The Green Goblin. The Goblin himself was dead one issue later, but since then, other super villains have used that name.

Gwen was only one of several girlfriends Spidey had over the years. He kept coming back to Mary Jane Watson, whom he'd met in 1966, and married her in 1987.

Along with several other Marvel characters, including Captain America and Iron Man, Spider-Man became an animated cartoon character in 1966. These productions used very limited animation, and are not fondly recalled today. The character was again animated in 1995, when Fox Kids Network took him on as a companion to their popular X-Men cartoon. This time, production values are much higher, and the show has a better fan following.

In 1977, Spider-Man was made into a live-action TV movie, as part of an attempt to market several Marvel characters, including The Incredible Hulk and Doctor Strange, to television. But that live-action Spidey was not well received, and is now mostly forgotten. It was another quarter-century before he was successfully done in that medium, but when Spidey's blockbuster hit the screen in 2002, it made up for the lack.

Meanwhile, on T-shirts and lunch boxes, as an action figure and a character in occasional prose novels — and, of course, in cartoons and comic books — he didn't seem held back by the delay in big screen success.

I dont think a blond SG works. its too bright. Then Iron Man looks alright. Spot, while not the traditional blk+white, is somehow tougher looking with those colours. i'd suggest that in the future the boots should be the grey (maybe a little darker than the main outfit).

more importantly though, was it fun to do?

Squirrel Girl could be a HILARIOUS comic!

Right now, there is a whole "pop-punk-girl" thing going on in the mainstream. Look at the sucess of Avril Lavigne. With the right attitude, Squirrel Girl could come across as the "cool little sister" character, who pokes fun at the mainstream characters.

Ex: Upon visiting the X-Mansion, (trying to be an X-Man) she has the following exchange with Gambit.

-Hey, Squirrel Girl...nice tail.
-Dude, I'm fourteen.
-(winces) desole... (walks away)

OR, when visiting Baxter Building, to meet the Fantastic Four...

-Do you have an apppointment?
-No, I..
-The Fantastic Four are very busy - here, take an autograph..
(SG gets handed a picture of Johnny Storm, with "2 hot" written on it)

By night, she could follow Spider-Man or Iron Man around, trying to be a side-kick. (Iron Man is funnier, because he is so straight-faced.)

I LOVE the suit design - the pockets, hood, and especially the fur trim around the collar. I think the tail should be removed, though.

I can see it now: "Squirrel Girl" could be the "teen-girl-friendly" title that Marvel has been trying for, with "Mary Jane" and "Spider-Girl" and other such titles. PLus, it could show all the heroes of the Marvel Universe in a new way. (Make them look a bit like jerks, sometimes.)

Just get the writer and artist of SHE-HULK to do it! Get a series where SG tours the Marvel Universe, trying to join all the various super-teams, and trying to be a sidekick!

THIS IDEA IS AMAZING!

Is the tail part of the suit?

If she is a wierd mutant squirrel creature with a tail, this could get a bit wierd.

Trying to imagine a girlfriend with a nice big bushy tail,....

It points to at least nice thick close cropped fur going down her spine, at most having everything but her "undersides" covered in fur.

Since I am an animal lover, (No Pun or sexual inferrence implied or intended), I can't see myself too stressed at the thought.

I wasn't aware there were tails that weren't prehensial

that means they can move, right?

I wasn't aware there were tails that weren't prehensial

that means they can move, right? it means that they can grab stuff,.. a dogs tail can't do anything but wag, a monkeys tail can grab, and in most cases support the animals weight.

hmm. I'm impartial, but prehensial would be better
