"Drop It Like It's Hot":
The Discussion Thread For The Human Torch
*********
Welcome to the first official thread dedicated solely to Johnny Storm--the Human Torch of The Fantastic Four. Here, I would like to invite my awesome fellow Forum Members to discuss all things Flame On!, in relation to Johnny Storm (hint, hint): His roles in film, TV, and in print. Let's talk about the live action actors that have embodied this character over the years, the potential impact Johnny Storm could have on kids of the world when 2005 rolls around and his relationships with Reed, Ben, and his older sister Susan Storm Richards. Also feel free to post your favorite pictures of Mr. SuperNova himself....

History: Jonathan Storm, the second of two children born to a physician and his wife, grew up comfortably on Long Island. Despite the fact his mother died in a car crash when he was nine, Storm developed an interest in automobiles at an early age. Storm passed much of his leisure time in the company of automobile mechanics and enthusiasts, and learned to totally overhaul a car's transmission before he was fifteen years old. For his sixteenth birthday, his father bought him his first "hot rod."
Storm went to California to visit his sister, Susan, who had moved there hoping to become an actress and there become engaged to marry aeronautical engineer Reed Richards. Richards was working on a starship of his own design that would make possible travel to other solar systems through hyperspace. When the United States government threatened to cut off its partial funding for the project, Richards decided to make an immediate test flight. He himself would ride in the starship, with his friend Benjamin Grimm acting as pilot. Susan and Johnny Storm insisted on going along as well. Sneaking onto the launch site and into the starship, the four launched themselves into space. The starship encountered unexpected intense radiation, which proved to be too much for the ship's shielding to block out. (It has been theorized that this was the result of a reduction in the extent of Earth's magnetosphere brought on by a solar flare.) As a result, the four people in the ship were exposed to intense cosmic ray bombardment. Aborting the test flight, the four returned to Earth.
Upon landing, Johnny Storm discovered that the cosmic rays had mutagenically altered his entire body, enabling him to create fiery plasma all about his body without harm to himself. Storm called himself the Human Torch, the same name used by the android hero of the 1940's. Storm agreed to join Richards' proposed team of champions, the Fantastic Four.
For a time Johnny Storm tried to live quietly on Long Island with his sister, trying to finish high school while hoping that no one in the community would realize that he was the Human Torch, a fact that proved impossible to conceal from the townspeople. After graduation, Johnny moved into the Fantastic Four's Baxter Building headquarters in New York City.
After many years, Johnny began dating and then married the blind sculptress Alicia Masters, former girlfriend of teammate the Thing, who was then on a sabbatical from the team. This caused some tension between him and the Thing when he returned to the team, and later Storm suspected the Thing of inviting Crystal to join the Fantastic Four to test his marital fidelity as a way of seeking revenge or splitting his wife. Crystal soon left the team, however, and the Thing began a relationship with their other associate, the second Ms. Marvel.
Later, Alicia Masters was revealed to be a spy from the alien race of shape-changing Skrulls. Lyja, the Skrull, had fallen in love with Storm and married him. The revelation of Lyja led the team to infiltrate the Skrull homeworld to rescue the real Alicia, who was still in love with the Thing, and the Skrulls captured Lyja. Although Lyja managed to escape, her relationship with Storm was damaged, turning Storm from a hotheaded brash adult to a solemn and brooding one. Lyja returned to Earth to attempt a reconciliation and reveal that she was pregnant, a fact which began to turn Storm around, although he never fully recovered his love for what he thought was Alicia. Lyja's "child" ended up being a Skrull bio-weapon, which the Four quickly defeated. Eventually, Storm began to date again, and has since moved on in romantic terms.
Afterwards, Storm was involved alongside the Four and other heroes against the menace known as Onslaught. Although he appeared to sacrifice himself to stop the creature, he was actually shunted to another dimension and later restored to this reality.
More recently, Storm encountered the heroine Namorita, and the two had a brief but well-publicized romance. He has also tried his hand at becoming a movie star.
Strength Level: The Human Torch possesses the normal human strength of a man of his age, height, and build who engages in moderate regular exercise.
Known Superhuman Powers: The Human Torch possesses the mental ability to control ambient heat energy and the physical ability to envelop his entire body or portionsof his body with fiery plasma without harm to himself. (Plasma is a super-heated stated of matter such as exists in the atmosphere of stars.)
Ordinarily, when aflame, the Human Torch is enveloped by a low intensity flame of low level plasma (reddish, approximately 780 Fahrenheit), which ranges from 1 to 5 inches from his body. He can, however, generate much higher levels and flames about himself. The Torch refers to his highest, hottest levels of plasma that he can create as his "nova flame." The exact temperatures that his "nova flame" can attain are not known.
At an average rate of expenditure of energy, the Torch can stay aflame for about 16.8 hours. In his younger days, he could only maintain his flame for much briefer periods, and sometimes exhausted it while in combat. He cannot maintain his "nova flame" for as long a time as he can maintain his ordinary flame. The Torch can release all of his body's stored energy in one intense, omni-directional "nova-burst," which can reach about 1,000,000 F, and which is similar to the heat-pulse of a nuclear warhead detonation, with an are of total devastation of about 900 feet in diameter. (The Torch has claimed that he can destroy a small moon with his nova-burst.) This violent discharge uses his entire reserve of energy (except for the necessary to keep him alive) at once, entirely exhausting his flame power. He generally requires at least 12 hours to recover entirely from such a feat.
The Human Torch can generate shapes composed of fire from any point on his body. (He usually employs his hands to "sculpt" the flames.) He can form fire into long streams, spheres, or even more complex shapes like letters in skywriting. These flames-objects will only remain their shapes as long as he concentrates upon them. The objects will only burn about 3 minutes before expiring unless the Torch continues to infuse them with energy. The temperature of these fiery projections is generally around 2,800 F (near the melting point of iron).
The Human Torch's plasma has a high hydrogen content, and is surrounded by an exuded cloud of mono-atomic hydrogen atoms. This hot cloud provides sufficient positive buoyancy for him to float. With mental stimulation of his flame, he can provide enough lift to carry 180 pounds. By forming a jet from his feet, directed behind him, he can achieve speeds up to at least 140 miles per hour.
The Human Torch has the ability to mentally control the ambient heat energy within his immediate environment, even when he himself is not aflame. He can reduce objects' temperatures (if they are in a normal range for existing on Earth's surface) to about 30 F, raise them to several hundred degrees, or extinguish open flames. His radius of influence is about 80 feet. The heat energy he takes from the environment is absorbed into his own body. If he takes in a critical amount while he is not aflame, he will become aflame. There are unknown limits to the amount of flame he can absorb into his own body harmlessly while he is himself aflame.
The Human Torch's flame is supported by the presence of oxygen, and thus is extinguished in low air pressure or a vacuum. The Torch's flame can be extinguished by smothering materials, such as water, sand, fire-fighting foam, and heat-resistant blankets, unless his flame is at such an intensity that it immediately vaporizes such materials on contact. If hit with small amounts of water, up to about five gallons, the Torch can turn it to steam with relatively little effort. More water than that could extinguish his flame at its normal level, and he would have to wait until he could evaporate the residual moisture before re-ignition.
The Torch's light output is mostly in the infrared and infrared region of the spectrum, and is invisible to the unaided eye. Less that 10% of his total power output is in the visible portion of the spectrum. Thus, the Torch, when aflame, is dimmer than one would expect of so powerful an energy source.
The Human Torch is unaffected by heat and flames, including his own, even when part of him is aflame and the rest of him is not. His flesh cannot be scalded or burned by any heat source whose level is below that of his maximum output.
Abilities: Johnny Storm is a brilliant racing car driver. He is also a superb mechanic and designer of automobiles. He himself is responsible for major redesigns of the Fantastic Four's flying Fantasti-Car, based on Reed Richards' designs for the original version.
Paraphernalia: Johnny Storm's Fantastic Four uniforms and ordinary clothing are created using unstable molecules, enabling him to flame on while wearing them without harming them in any way.

Q. How will they do Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movie?
From Fred Topel,
Your Guide to Action-Adventure Movies.
A.
One of the problems with CGI fire is that it can look really fake, like it’s not attached to anything actually burning. So how do you create a whole flaming man and make it look real? Fantastic Four’s visual effects supervisor and producer Kurt Williams explains.
“There’s not a lot of ‘man on fire’ reference out there that’s very impressive right now and that’s part of the reason we’re very nervous about the Torch,” Williams said. “But at the same time we’re creating him in such a way that we’ve got layers. We’re using real fire elements, and that’s important. Once again, we have to create this effect with him we’re he’s photo real, he’s got to generate fire from within his body, so you’re going to see the skin on his body change as he’s generating that fire.
And that’s going to create an organic feel that will make the audience believe that he’s really on fire. The other thing that we’re very cognizant of, and we’re going to be dealing with on this movie, is that a lot of time, a great deal takes place in exterior. And doing day exterior fire is really hard because you don’t see fire during the day. And a lot of times, the mistake that people make is that they don’t stay true to the actual environment. They’ll make the fire a little more saturated than it really would be, if you were shooting real flames. We’re going to great lengths to stay true to what actual fire would look like in those scenarios. For instance, if you look at the shot of him falling off the mountain there, it’s about integrating- you’re going to have to blow out the fire a little more than you would, in a lot of cases, because that’s the way it would be during the day.”
The Human Torch will be a completely CGI effect when on fire. There will be no stuntmen in flame retardant suits. “A lot of times when you go with a hybrid approach, where you’ve got partially real men on fire and then you try and match that to CG or simulated fire which is what we’re using. We’re using sims for him. Then oftentimes that crossover calls attention to itself. It was important to us that we stay with one philosophy on all the characters. That’s why we left Doom primarily to prosthetics with the exception of his electrical bolts. That’s why we left Thing predominantly with the suit and we did that on purpose because integrating these effects oftentimes it will feel different, it will look different. One of the things that we learned from looking at a lot of man on fire stuff for instance is that the crossover from life fire to CG fire doesn’t always work all that well. So we’re going to take one approach and we’re going to make you believe it. and we’re creating enough layers of this heat signature, muscle striation. There will be several sublayers of flame that when mixed together, they’re all based on real flame elements for one thing. And once you mix that together, then you will get a very realistic feel. The other thing that we’re going to great lengths to do is to have the interactive lighting on the set actually reflect what really needs to happen if you have a real flaming guy there for instance. So we’re working really hard at that. A lot of times, people don’t take the time to do that. So part of compositing Torch into a shot for instance is making sure that there’s interactive lighting on the walls and ceiling and other actors to sell it. And what interactive lighting we don’t do on the set, we’ll have to create in post.”
The element of actor Chris Evans will remain in all stages of the Torch. “For instance, with Johnny, every time he starts to torch up, or if he’s partially torched, we’ll be bringing Chris Evans’ performance back through the effects, so we always have the real actor in the shot, and the real movement. And there’s lots of reasons for that. One is because it will have a more organic feel. It’ll feel more of this world, as opposed to some of the images you find in the comic books. The second thing is, and this is the practical part of the effects business; we have a very short post schedule, and we have a lot of work to do before next May. So as much of that original performance as we can capture, the better off we are. And I think we’ll be able to provide more shots, and a higher level of shots.”
Chris Evans
Biography
Chris Evans grew up in Boston, son of a dentist and a dancer. In high school, he decided he wanted to pursue acting, and went to New York the summer after his junior year where he interned at a casting office and took a summer acting program. An agent he met that summer later helped him get his start after he finished high school. He had bit parts on various TV dramas like "Boston Public" before scoring major feature film roles.
Born:13 June 1981, USA (age 23) Height:5'11"
A handsome young actor whose breakout role as a popular jock in Not Another Teen Movie (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1807455542) found him in high demand, Chris Evans followed with a role in the moderately successful comedy The Perfect Score (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808417352) before truly coming into his own before the cameras. Born in Sudbury, MA, Evans spent the majority of his childhood in Boston before his love of acting brought him to New York City the summer after his junior year of high school. It was during this time that the aspiring actor alternated between an internship at a casting office and summer acting classes. With a little help from a contact he made that summer, Evans began auditioning shortly after graduating from high school. A supporting role in the short-lived television series Opposite Sex (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1800143879) gave the up-and-comer his first break on the small screen, and a supporting role in the feature The Newcomers (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1804555009) preceded an appearance in the popular prime-time drama Boston Public. At this point it appeared as if everything was going smoothly for Evans, but his career would soon shift gears and kick into overdrive thanks to a featured role in the teen comedy parody Not Another Teen Movie (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1807455542). Cast as the popular jock who transforms an ugly duckling into a popular princess, Evans ran with the role and proved a more than capable comic talent. If audiences had wondered where Evans had disappeared to in the following few years, their curiosities were answered when the young actor took a leading role in the moderately successful comedy The Perfect Score (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808417352). Though to many it may have seemed that Evans career had stalled somewhat, a role as an unsuspecting young man who receives a desperate phone call from a kidnapping victim in the 2004 thriller Cellular (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808403398) offered some relief from the seeming drought of choice roles. A subsequent role in the same year's The Orphan King served as a strong follow-up before hearty roles in such 2005 releases as Fierce People (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808583856) and The Fantastic Four (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=info&id=1808403968) found him leaning ever closer to becoming a true marquee draw.

I dunno. I like both, but I think it'd be interesting if St.John could outmanipulate Johnny's own flames in a fight. Sort of take possession of him. Sure Torch is more powerful, but it'd be hella cool if Pyro could weild his use him as a generator for his own means.

First off lightnin you are the man when it comes to thread titles:up:
Now as far as evans goes i knew nothing of him until he was cast(I'd seen that teen movie he did but hadn't took much notice of him)And from the start i thought he looked good as johnny and the short haircut they have given him suits the modern interpretation IMO.
I agree with something surfergilr said a while ago about him having the potential to be the next Tom Cruise as he's shown charisma in the clips and the scene of him riding his bike getting some sugar from the babe in the car reminded mr of young tom in top gun.

Tom Cruise, watch out! lol

Chris -- I agree, this is his break-out-role...
Michael -- This will just widen his already big fan base from TV, but remember he will be a "Big Orange Rock" through most of the movie...so hopefully people will remember what he looks like by the end of the movie...LOL
Ioan -- I think this role will really endear him to the American audience.
Jessica -- Summer 2005 is the Summer of Alba...LOL

just been wondering about how it will look when johnny flames on.What i mean is that they are gonna have to be careful to make sure it looks great but also not like a man is being set on fire,as that might cause a problem with the ratings board.this just came to mind as everytime you see somebody engulfed in flames in a movie it's usually horrific, and while we know that johnny's flame is in a completely different context i think they still have to make sure visually that it doesnt look like he's being set on fire and that in his case it is a good thing.just a thought anyway;)
surfergirl
12-06-2004, 07:30 AM
i'm sure they will show how when Johnny 'flames on' it doesn't burn his skin etc, then Reed can even explain how his suit is flame resitant and he isn't burned when he 'flames on' due to molecules and blah blah in a scientific rant. the ratings board should see it in a different light because the FF is a comic book movie with someone referred to as "the Human Torch," in which bursting into flames is his super power. he isn't someone being lit on fire to burn to death. plus Johnny shows he can control his power by fully 'flaming on' or just his hands, making fireballs, etc.

This reminds me of the whole controversy on Dark Angel when Max (Jessica's character) rides her motorcycle with no helmet...they had to explain within the dialogue how she could get away with it...then the Fox execs. let it pass..."She's a genetically enhanced killing machine" so she doesn't need a helmet...they can take care of this as far as Johnny is concerned...I see no problems with it whatsoever....again this isn't Jackass, The Movie...those guys are nuts...

thanks kmack,i have seen the footage i was just pondering if there might be a rating problem over the difference between being set on fire and flaming on,i know there shouldn't be but these days everything is scrutinised and there always seems to be some group or other complaing about something.Still you guy's are right It's a comic book movie so the rating's board should realise the context.not trying to start a bash just curious to see if anyone else thought it might be an issue.:)

Selma Blair's character in "Hellboy" was totaly engulfed in flames (albeit it was blue fire) and it looked good....and I don't know of any problems that that FX had with the ratings board.

yeah right.look at the way she looks at him.they have a definate connection and it's more than respect and friendshipnope its friendship unless Chris wants Jessica Biel to kiss his butt. some people are just naturally flirty. plus they do get along really well and have good chemistry but that doesn't mean anything is going on romantically. even if they find each other attractive which can easily happen with any "co-workers," peers, etc...it doesn't mean anything is happening between them.

Evans may be a loyal boyfriend, but it's pretty obvious his co-star has the hots for him. And even if he's madly in love with Biel, that has to be major hormonal torture!! I mean, c'mon, four months in skin-tight outfits with Jessica Alba and he can't touch? Agony!!

Try to relax. We're just fantasizing about a couple of actors who almost certainly aren't involved (if they were, the tabloids who have gotten a hold of it by now), but it's fun to pretend because they're both so ridiculously hot. Way to hot to be playing brother and sister, if you ask me.
surfergirl
12-18-2004, 07:17 PM
their hottness will make them good-looking siblings in the movie, so looks "run in the family" if you will  but rogerwilko is right, if there was something going on between Chris and Jess it would be in the tabloids. what goes on in their private lives really isn't our business. even though the press loves gossip and rumors.

to answer your question Fantastic Boy, in the Frost script Johnny burns off his clothes the first couple of times he fully flames on, but then their uniforms are designed to accomodate their powers and the FF uniform doesn't burn. there are two scenes in the Frost script when Johnny is first realizing his powers where he burns of his clothes
Just bumping to the front....
Q. How will they do Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movie?
And what interactive lighting we don’t do on the set, we’ll have to create in post.” The element of actor Chris Evans will remain in all stages of the Torch.

So, these character-driven threads are being ressurrected and reborn back where they began :D

I don't see why you guys are complaining about the human torch for. Someone mentioned that he just looks like a big fire ball. Well, if you slow down the teaser you can plainly see the guy inside the fire (or the outline of him):

I think it looks pretty cool. And this movie is still 7 months away, give them time to polish it up.

That looks so Cool! :)
I just saw the preview trailer... It was very very cool...
The simple words didn't quite hit to me, I think they should've used a different font... and the lines almost sounded corny, but the music and the word 'fantastic' made up for it for me...
But the reason I came by was to say that I wished they had used a younger actor for Johnny... looking at the trailer he has very little visual difference from either Doom or Reed, especially in fast paced stuff with dark lighting... he doesn't seem to bring the energy that I like to see Johnny bringing... but of course, this isn't the comic book now is it...
And btw, the site says Johnny's the test pilot... put that in your pipe and chew on it...

For the 10,000th time, Chris Evans is 23-years old!! He looks 23 years old. Why do you think he looks older? Wrinkles? A receding hair line? I'm frankly relieved they didn't cast a blond Paul Walker-type for this role. Johnny should be cocky and fun-loving, not an airhead. I'm also totally mystified by your comment that Evans lacks energy in the trailer. Huh?

One thing that i love very much is the relationship between Ben and Johnny.
I hope Ben calls Johnny Hotshot or/and match stick in the movie:
