UPDATE: Pic's of new tat from 6/25 are on Page 3 of this thread.
Hi Folks,
Yesterday I finally realized a goal I've been working towards for nearly three years. I finally found the right artist to do a custom tattoo of my jaguar, and he put it onto my skin yesterday. It's on my left shoulder, across the shoulder blade. It turned out better than I'd imagined. As you can very well guess, this tattoo means a great deal to me for many reasons. This was taken immediately after he'd finished working on me, so the skin is a little red, but not too bad. There's a little bit of glare, but you can see most of it. We did it all in a single sitting of 3 1/2 hours with a 5-10 minute break. This was my first tattoo, and I'm looking at getting a matching one of this guy on my right shoulder blade, only doing him as a black jaguar. I'm happy with it, and thought I'd share.

Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments. I'm definitely happy with it. It's a custom design from a collaboration between myself and the tattoo artist.
Klxnt: The avatar you did is pretty cool, man! Thanks! When I get a little time I'll put it into my profile!
DBella: It took 3 1/2 hours to put it on me. We took a 5-10 minute break at about the halfway mark because the artist was having a nicotine fit. Heh! :D Did it hurt? Sure it did. I have a very high pain tolerance, though, so it wasn't all that bad for me. The part that hurt the most was the tail, as it's down on part of my lateral's & ribcage more than the rest of the tattoo.
Garian: If I believed in God, maybe I'd be worried about offending him. Besides, that quote sounds more like the personal beliefs of someone who had a hand in writing part of the bible. ;)

3 1/2 hours - Wow! But if you're happy with the result, I guess it must be worth all those pain. Isn't it a practice to use anesthetic for such a long and painful procedure?
As for offending God with tattoos, I don't buy that. What does artwork on your skin have anything to do with your faith in God?

Anasthetic? Not in most tattoo places I've ever heard of. The pain is supposed to be a part of the ritual. I had a little bit of endorphins kick in, but nothing too bad. Some people get major endorphin rushes while getting tattoos and fly off into La-La Land, though, which is one of the things that some people get addicted to tattooing for.

I hate it when someone reveals something horrible, traumatic, and completely irrelevant about their life in the middle of a conversation. Like the other day, in one of the Superman threads, we were talking about who would win in a fight to the finish: Lex Luthor or Brainiac? I present a very good arguement as to why Luthor would win, then the other guy says: "My uncle and I once played "hide the salami" in the basement when I was eight". I was like, WTF? What kind of arguement is that? So your uncle popped your cherry, that doesn't change that fact that Lex Luthor is a superior villain than Brainiac.

Isn't he an amazing, insightful person, folks? Lets all give him a big hand! Wow! That was the boobiest comment I've seen in MONTHS. What are you, 12?
Jag: As an artist myself, I really like it! I'm glad that (outside of the bloody slashes...but those are forgivible, aye?;) ) within the classic format, you decided to make it an art piece stylized origionally and closer to the actual animal than as opposed to the cliche, caricature look-how-mean-my-shoulder-is-now-I-don't-feel-so-badly-about-my-genital-deformity thing that so many of the soulless, unimaginative, lets-get-drunk-and-get-a-random-thing-that-means-nothing engraved-permanently-on-our-flesh jaggovs who end up being tr0lls online do.

shinlyle: Thanks, man! You've got the artistic skills, so I'm sure some day you'll design something that you'll like enough to get it inked on you.
G2K: Thanks! :)
blueyedgypsy: Thank you very much. This is something I've been trying to find the right artist to do for almost three years, now. The tattoo I wanted was never about getting something because I thought it was cool or to make up for a high-swingin' peter. The jaguar is my spirit animal, and as such commands a very healthy amount of respect from me including in how I would want to depict a jag on my body. It's a very, very spiritual and meaningful piece of artwork to me, and I wanted it to be as true to the animal as possible. The tattoo artist and I spent a lot of time looking at the markings, the build and the musculature of jaguars to make certain we could really capture the likeness of one as closely as we could (as opposed to someone's idea of what one should look like). As a matter of fact, I very much like the fact that the jag's face, particularly in th eye, has a certain serenity and peacefulness to it. It makes me think he's where he wants to be and he's centered and at peace with it all which is a perfect compliment to so much power. The slash marks and the shadowing came about from a conversation he and I had about "What if this thing really had jumped on your back? What would that look like?" We kept the claw marks within reason and tasteful, I feel, and they fit the animal and the scene portrayed there so they aren't out of place or done strictly because they'll look cool or something. All in all, it turned out better than I'd ever imagined and I'm very happy with it.
Cheers!

Perhaps if you spent some of your time learning how to properly employ punctuation, grammar and spelling as well as making attempts to provide sincere and constructive feedback, I would regard your commentary as something more than the childish attempts of an unsophisticated illiterate, starved for any kind of attention and trying to get someone to notice them by hurling empty, meaningless insults completely devoid of any sort of intellectual or logical thought process behind them and only constructed, however crude and rudimentary, for the sole purpose of deriving some sort of rise out of their intended target. But, as it stands, this is not the case and I only respond to you to advise you that you may be perhaps one of the more inane and lesser trolls I've ever come across in the entire history of the internet. At least the standards you set for yourself are easily obtainable.

Hi Gang,
It's finally time to resurrect this thread. I spent four hours in the chair yesterday, getting the black jaguar inked onto my other shoulder. It's meant to be a companion piece/matched set to my previous jaguar tattoo. The first one, the yellow jag, is my spirit animal. The second, the black jag, is my wife's spirit animal. I'm very happy with how the whole thing turned out. My wife took A LOT of pic's of both of these events, but I'll spare you the intermediary pictures and just post the final results:
My first jag, that I got back in December (which I posted when this thread first started, but it's good to have it here for a refresher):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/jaguarr/Jag%20Tats/Jag-Tat1.jpg
The black jag that I had done yesterday:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/jaguarr/Jag%20Tats/Black-Jag-New.jpg
And, finally, both jag's together for the full effect:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/jaguarr/Jag%20Tats/Double-Jag-Back.jpg
I'm extremely happy with how they both turned out. I can't even decide which one I like better, actually! My artist is a freakin' genius! :D So, klxnt made me the killer avatar I've been using for the last six months. Since then, I've been enabled to use a 75x75 avatar at 30kb or less since I cleared 5,000 posts, and I'd like to be able to incorporate all three of the pictures above into an avatar somehow. Anyone want to take a shot at doing a new one for me?
Cheers!

I was aware of such practices in pre-European America, but I didn't know that was common in South America, too (as it must be, because jaguars only live there). A good book that fictionously deals with this belief is 'The Clan of the Cave Bear'.

Most cultures have spirit or totem animals in their lore at some point or another. It's pretty interesting stuff when you start digging into it.

When I see statements like the one you commented on, Draw4u, I have to wonder what sort of limited life experience would lead someone to such a narrow-minded viewpoint. Tattooing and even piercing have been part of countless cultures throughout history, some very modern and some very primitive for their times. They fell out of favor with many religious groups, particularly the Christians and the Puritans, because those groups do not believe in modification of the body, which is why modern American society has some negative perceptions of tattoos and body piercing to this day. When I hear someone say that they hate tattoos, I also hear them telling me that they hate art in general. Whether a person projects their own personal value sets on someone who has tattoos with a negative or positive perception or not, one has to admire the artistry that goes into many of them (especially in this day and age). Just like all art, there are some amazing pieces of artwork out there, and there are some absolutely terrible ones. Just because a person cannot fathom the idea of having something permanently embedded in their skin does not make the decision of another to do so any less valid. Many people who have such artwork on their bodies have made very careful, focused and often very spiritual decisions to do so. I've met very few people with tattoos that don't have some very special meaning for each of the pieces of art they wear proudly. Frivolity isn't a word I use very often in association with the people who have tats, and the vast majority of them that I have encountered are very grounded, centered, down to earth folks who have taken the time to get to know themselves very well. If anything, one has to admire the time they've spent enduring sometimes many hours of pain to bring their art to life. It's interesting to see how our culture has become more accepting of body art these days, for the most part. The boundary pushers in our culture over the last fifty years have opened up a lot of doors for personal freedom and expression, and I'm glad that I live in a country where we still have the ability to make choices and decisions about what we want to do with our own bodies.

Thanks, Hulk. If you can get past the thought of the needles and just look at it as a little bit of pain (which it quickly becomes once the endorphins start kicking in and your skin goes a bit numb) it's really not that bad. Gotta love the cats, big and small!

I'm still deciding between two things. I'll let you know when I get it. And no, I'll probably get that done at the same time, though it did heal up a lot nicer. The black and gray faded like I thought it would and its really not bad now. There's just one petal that still bothers me.
