No, it's about an immortal dude who stumbled upon the fountain of youth and must deal with life, love, loss, and death. It's supposed to be pretty powerful stuff.

lol, when you put it like that... Aronofsky getting screwed out of his dream project is not such a bad thing. :D

So it IS about time travel...to a certain extent ;)

Its good to see Jackman finally getting some quality work outside of the X-Men movies...especially with someone as progressive as Aronofsky.

Um, that was Wolfgang Peterson, not Darren Aronofsky. He was originally gonna do Batman Year One, though.

No, I know that. But Brad Pitt opted to do Troy while he was about to go into production of Troy. Had Pitt not jumped on to Troy, Peterson might've gone on to do Batman vs. Superman. Try to keep up. ;)

Aronofsky is doing some really crazy visuals with this film. Its done with chemical reactions and filming them. Not quite sure how he is going to incorporate them into the footage but this is our first look at it.

THE FOUNTAIN
1:1 with Darren Aronofsky

"I just want to tell stories and this is the story I've wanted to tell for the past six years."

I met Darren Aronofsky in a conference room big enough to hold at least 200 people. There the two of us sat, together at a table in the middle of this cavernous room. Odd considering this was perhaps one of the most intimate interviews I've ever had. Darren is an intensely personable guy and I eventually had to cut some parts out below because while Darren was interested in my thoughts on the film and the footage, I already covered most of that in my Con write-up. We spent at least 5-10 minutes bull****ting before I even got started asking relevant questions. He was such a great guy to talk to and was legitimately bummed to know that JoBlo, who he had met on the set visit, wasn't going to be around. Here's our talks on THE FOUNTAIN...

How serendipitous is it that the movie happened the way it did? It must've been devastating at the time but looking back on it, it must be one of the best things that's happened to you.

In some ways it is. I was ready to go and it was going to be a good movie. But that was sort of a different film. That was October of 2002. And now it's...what is it?

July.

Right. July 2005. So it's kind of a film that I made but no one else saw. This is a completely different movie. They're clearly related but... The only thing about this film is that we had all that research and pre- stuff that we had done. All the homework had already been done. So it is nice to now be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

You say these are two "completely different" movies. What changed along the way? Obviously the core is still the same...

Yeah, that's exactly right. It went from a $90 million film to a $35 million film. Nothing was really lost. That was the amazing thing. It's ultimately the same film as what it was. It's just a different...there is a different energy to it. It's interesting because the film is about rebirth. A big theme of the film is rebirth. It kinda had to die to be reborn. It's weird that what it's about also happened. It was a real adventure and a long trip. You hear all these stories about all these filmmakers that fight with Hollywood and have these long, terrible journeys and I thought I was gonna have an easy ride (laughs) but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's what I wanted to make. For me it's not a race of how many films you can do. I just want to tell stories and this is the story I've wanted to tell for the past six years. Finally we've gotten to tell it and that's pretty cool.

Were you able to use any of the sets from the original production?

They actually sold them. They auctioned them off about three months before we started work on this version (laughs).

Who would buy that? What use could someone have for some of that stuff??

(Laughs) I know. Well I have a friend in Melbourne and she went to a theme restaurant down there, like a Jekyll & Hyde, and they had all our mines and skulls that you say in the battle scenes. The first time we made them they took all those and a theme restaurant stuck him up and put them in there.

After it was shut down, was Warner Bros. still interested in making the film in some fashion?

I think they would've been happy if I had just disappeared. The persistence of my filmmaking partners of just pushing and pushing and pushing is the only reason it got made. No one really wanted to make it. Pretty much everyone in Hollywood said "no" to this movie at least once.

After it got shut down?

No before it got shut down...

After it got shut down did you try and shop it around to other studios besides Warners?

Yeah we tried to set it up everywhere several times. At lot of people just kept saying, no, no, no, no. So it was very, very hard to do. A long time ago, when we were trying to make REQUIEM, my producer said, "The more people say 'no' to you, the more you know you're doing something right." And I think that's true. I think there's enough people out there making things that Hollywood thinks people want to see. And I think people do want to see that sometimes. I love big movies but I think every once in a while I have an appetite for something a little different. THE FOUNTAIN hopefully will fill that.

Judging by the audience response to the footage, it just might.

How'd it look?!

I was supposed to come up here for this but I saw the trailer and knew I had to stick around for the rest.

So you saw the 10-minute piece?

Yeah.

How'd it look?!

It looked great. Really wowed me.

Did it let you down in any way?

Absolutely not. Quite the opposite actually. I've actually been trying to keep myself spoiler free on this one so a lot of what I saw was very new and surprising, which is rare when you write about movies for a living.

What did it seem like to you?

Some of the scenes were just so beautiful. Not just in the clip but in the trailer as well. A lot of emotion there. Like the scene when Hugh and Rachel are on the rooftop looking at the stars.

Wait, what did you see?

That part was in the trailer.

Oh yeah... They had the rooftop in the trailer?

Yeah.

Did you read the script?

No and I don't want to until I see the movie.

How'd you know it was a rooftop?

One of our guys was on-set in Montreal. Plus there was the promotional still.

Ohh, that's right. There was the photograph of that scene.

And the action sequences looked fantastic. Especially considering this is the scaled back version budget-wise.

Yeahyeahyeah. Cool. What'd that space stuff look like to you?

It was really fascinating. It was kinda like a slow reveal. [Hugh] is just sitting there meditating, but then you see he's floating. And then you see he's floating in a bubble. In space. Going millions of miles an hour. A real great tease cause now I'm dying to know how this all fits together.

Good, cool.

How are things going on LONE WOLF & CUB?

We're writing. Another draft is happening. It's been very challenging to make it work. Coming along...

Have you even decided definitively what your next project will be yet?

I haven't gotten to a place where I'm strong enough in my footing where I can branch out yet. But we're thinking.

How involved are you in the graphic novel adaptation of THE FOUNTAIN?

I wrote it. It's based on the screenplay and then I placed all the words and edited it. It's coming out in November.

Same time as the movie?

No before the movie. It's gonna be a hardcover, sort of, "Collector's Edition."

When is the movie coming out? Will it be this year?

There isn't a date but it WILL be this year.

Thanks a lot Darren, can't wait to finally see this.

Review of the graphic novel...

http://comics.ign.com/articles/667/667907p1.html
The Fountain GN Review
Darren Aronofsky's upcoming film gets top-billing in a new graphic novel from Vertigo.
by Hilary Goldstein

November 17, 2005 - For Pi director Darren Aronofsky, realizing his latest vision, The Fountain, has been an incredible challenge. Over the next year, however, his story of love and immortality will enjoy two lives. Originally written as a big-budget feature film, the movie was canned in 2002. Aronofsky, however, was so determined to bring his idea to an audience that he converted his film script into a graphic novel. As artist Kent Williams began sending in pages for the book, Aronofsky found renewed inspiration for bringing The Fountain to the Silver Screen. He re-wrote the script, slimming it down and making it affordable. While audiences must wait until 2006 to see the finished film, they can take a deep drink from The Fountain in the newly-released oversized hardcover graphic novel from DC's Vertigo imprint.

The graphic novel version of The Fountain should not be considered an adaptation of the movie. As Aronofsky explained at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con, the book and film are two different interpretations of the same story. Those who read the book will get a more complete view of the director's original movie, while those who see the motion picture in 2006 can enjoy the same themes in a slightly different package.
The Fountain spans a thousand years, from the 16th century to 2005 and 400 years beyond. Central to each time period is Tomas and his love Izzi, a woman fated to die. Though the book and film star the same characters, you won't see a graphical representation of Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. Williams began his incredible artwork for the graphic novel long before the film was re-cast. It's still difficult not to place those two actors in the title roles for the first few dozen pages of the graphic novel, but Aronofsky's writing is so strong, Williams' art so vital, that those images fade in time. For those who read The Fountain, it will be impossible not to see the images from the comic when watching Jackman and Weisz on the big screen.

The story begins in the 16th century, with Tomas as a strong-headed conquistador determined to defeat the Mayan army and uncover its greatest treasure. "The Fountain" refers to the mythical pool of immortality sought by Ponce de Leon, but there is no water sanctuary to be found in this story. Instead, this fountain is the Tree of Life, whose sap prolongs existence for any daring enough to cut through its bark. Izzi, in this era, is Tom's Queen and secret love.

We are quickly sent from the Mayan culture far into the future, to view Tomas in the 25th century, bald and covered in tattoos -- each ring wrapped around his body representing a year of life. Though he mysteriously has access to the Tree of Life, it is dying, having been almost completely drained. And if the Tree dies, so will Izzi. Amidst the stars, Tomas makes a daring gamble. It is at this point, with the introduction of such a heavily surreal environment, that I lost a little focus on the story. All sense of reality gives way and the story could easily have gone spiraling into nonsense. Wisely, Aronofsky soon grounds us, finally, in the modern day.

The narrative core of The Fountain is set in 2005, with Tomas as a cancer researcher married to Izzi, a woman with a terminal brain tumor. Williams leaves the richer colors of the previous scenes for softer hues that almost play like a watery memory. The effect is calming and adds dual layers of sadness and romance to the scenes.

The story hops back and forth between times from there, but it is the modern-day tale that lays the true groundwork for the emotional payoff of the final scene. Without the modern tale, there would be no context for the far less literal worlds of the 16th and 25th centuries. Ultimately it leads to a quiet, beautiful and sweet finale that proves more powerful than expected.

Aronofsky's sardonic wit, seen in Pi and Requiem for a Dream is absent here. Instead, he provides a science-fantasy tale that is more sweet than cynical. When I first finished The Fountain, I thought it was a good, but not quite brilliant piece of fiction. However, writing this review, I found the memory of the story resurfacing emotions, so much that I had to sit down and read The Fountain a second time. Though I still think Aronofsky needed to provide us the stable environment of the modern-day tale sooner, the story has an even great resonance upon a second read.

Rating: Must Have

I have no idea how the story of The Fountain might change for the feature film, but if it carries the soul of the graphic novel, it may just be one of the best movies of 2006. Even if the movie ends up falling short of expectations, Aronofsky has succeeded, at least in one medium, of providing an incredible journey of love and loss across the centuries.

SOUTHLAND TALES is in. THE FOUNTAIN is out. And JoBlo and the Arrow? The verdict is still out but that's about the only thing that's not 100% about this year's Cannes Film Festival. The official lineup was announced today and as was rumored earlier this week, Darren Aronofsky's ambitious sci-fi, adventure flick THE FOUNTAIN didn't make the cut. It's unclear whether the decision was that of Aronofsky and WB or that of the Cannes selection committee. SOUTHLAND TALES seemed to be the film that grabbed THE FOUNTAIN's spot with many of the other film's expected to make the cut, did. In addition to SOUTHLAND other films "In Competition" include MARIE ANTOINETTE, BABEL, PAN'S LABYRINTH and FAST FOOD NATION. Other films set to premiere out of competition include THE DA VINCI CODE, which will open the Festival, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, UNITED 93, OVER THE HEDGE and A SCANNER DARKLY. As for the aforementioned appearance by our own celebrities JoBlo and the Arrow, the boys are definitely shooting to be there for another go in France and we hope to have official word on that soon

Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN has a release date at last!!!

Hey folks, Harry here... finally for the first time in well... forever, we have a secured nailed down theatrical wide release date for Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN. Warners, being extremely nurturing with Aronofsky, took the release date demons away and allowed him and his editors the freedom to explore and find the rhythm of this rather complex and beautiful story. October 13th, 2006 is the date when we'll get to see what I believe we all feel in our hearts is going to be one of the best films period this year!

Nah, it isn't good date for movie like The Fountain.

I hoped it would be one of the favorite candidates for next Oscar Awards :(

And I also hope there will not be big competition between it and The prestige :down

Anyway, I think we will get first full trailer this summer.

Dont think this film will get high numbers in box office, but it should get some awards and enough positivity from critics ;)

Jackman looks great in his role

I hoped it would be released in December to be near to Oscar Awards. As we know Oscar usually includes most part of movies as the main candidates for Best Movie and etc., which were released in December.

King-Kong was released in December. Aviator was released in December. ROTK was released in December and etc.
