In an interview with the official LOTR fan magazine, Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens confirmed that their next project after "King Kong" is "The Lovely Bones" according to AICN.

This much smaller character driven story based on the Alice Sebold book, is narrated by the spirit of a young girl who was raped and murdered as she watches her family and friends deal with her death. She also watches her murderer and follows the events in his life.

About still working with Jackson post-LOTR, Boyens said "We feel comfortable with each other. I am sure there will be other projects we do separately, but at the moment, as long as it works, we'll keep doing it".

It looks like Jackson is following his earlier roots with the film after King Kong.

I'm guessing it'd be more like his serious films rather than Like Bad Taste, and Braindead (Dead Alive)

Definately sounds like they are going back down the Heavenly Creatures route. I loved that movie, not his typical fair but definately a great movie. The Lovely Bones is a great book, its a very interesting read and will be quite difficult to adapt but then who could ever have imagined adapting LOTR. The only problem I have with this is
WHERES "THE HOBBIT" DAMMIT!!!!!!!!

The Amazing Lee

It will happen in due time. He spent nearly a decade on Lord of the rings. (I think)

Pre-production, production, post-production, screenings etc.

I think it's safe to say he wants to do some other productions as well.

King Kong is pretty big in itself and I don't doubt Peter Jackson for a second but he has a lot of hype to live up to for King Kong as well.

He did with LOTR though so I have faith

It'll be different seeing him do a very small scale movie without lots of special effects after seein him do Lord of the Rings and King Kong. I sure hope that he still gets around to doing The Hobbit before Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee croak. I have a gut feeling that it will end up getting farmed out to one of Jackson's second unit directors, but I really hope he does it himself. He was the one who made us see Middle Earth in a way that was never before possible, and I'd love to see him come back for one more round of Tolkien. I'm sure it'll be great even if he only produces it, but I really hope that he directs it.

The White Council? That's really sad.

In fact, given the way Radagast was trimmed from LOTR I'd say you'd be very much out of luck. Plus there's the small matter of the White Council barely even getting mentioned in the book in the first place.

Peter Jackson and partner Fran Walsh have put up their own money to option film rights to the Alice Sebold novel The Lovely Bones in an unusual development plan that will exclude studio financing until the script is finished, says Variety.

Rights were acquired from FilmFour, the movie arm of British broadcaster Channel 4, which will still serve as Jackson and Walsh's partner in developing the project. The project will be next for Jackson after he completes Universal's King Kong.

Jackson, Walsh and Philippa Boyens will begin next January adapting the book as a spec script for a movie that likely won't be ready for release until fall 2007.

The trade adds that Jackson's manager Ken Kamins and FilmFour won't entertain distribution or financing possibilities until the script is done and the movie is budgeted, a process that should be complete around May 2006.

Here's how the book's publisher describes the story:

When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen.

In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death, and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. (It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swingset.)

With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief--her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor--and begin the difficult process of healing.

Heaven "is cleverly not described that well in the book, because Alice wanted your imagination to do the work and decide what Susie's heaven looks and feels like," Jackson said. "We will have to show something on film. It has to be somehow ethereal and emotional, but it can't be hokey."

"Lovely Bones" Don't Come Cheap
By Garth Franklin
Thursday May 3rd 2007 12:39am
Director Peter Jackson's planned adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel"The Lovely Bones" is being shopped around to studios this week, with at least four studios vying to snap it up.

It seems a slam dunk in some ways - the script is done, an October 29th start of shooting date guaranteed, a locked picture for late 2008 release, and the involvement of much of the same behind-the-scenes crew involved in "The Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong."

Yet there's several catches. The subject matter is almost arthouse fare in nature; the budget sits at around a hefty $65 million and could reach up to $90 million for the total deal; and whatever deal in place comes with hefty promotional commitments and supervision by Jackson on how the studio should market it.

With a potential guild strike being talked about, studios are more than ever in demand of choice scripts requiring few, if any re-writes. Thus DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Sony and Universal are all said to be in contention for the project at present.

DreamWorks Acquires Peter Jackson's Lovely Bones
Source: DreamWorks Studios May 4, 2007

DreamWorks Studios in association with Film 4 has acquired The Lovely Bones, Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Alice Sebold best-selling novel, it was announced today by Stacey Snider, CEO and Co-Chairman of the Studio.

Peter Jackson will direct the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. Carolynne Cunningham, Jackson, Walsh, and Aimee Peyronnet will serve as producers. Executive producing will be Film 4's Tessa Ross, Ken Kamins and Jim Wilson.

The Lovely Bones has been one of the most sought-after properties in recent years. It tells the story of Susie Salmon, who is murdered, but continues to observe her family on Earth after her death. Although she is detached from the world she once knew, Susie witnesses the impact of her loss on her loved ones, whilst her killer skillfully covers his tracks and prepares to murder again. In a tone that is both emotionally truthful, and darkly humorous, Susie tries to balance her desire for vengeance against the love she feels for her family and her need to see them heal; and ultimately comes to understand that the concept of family can encompass both the living and the dead.

The picture is scheduled to begin filming in October in Pennsylvania and New Zealand, and will be distributed worldwide by Paramount.

The Lovely Bones was published in 2002 and was Alice Sebold's second novel. The book has sold over ten million copies worldwide and remained on the New York Times hardback bestseller list for over a year. In 2003, Sebold won the Book of the Year Award for Adult Fiction from the American Booksellers Association.

"We are thrilled that DreamWorks Studios has been able to acquire the film rights to this story that has captivated so many people," said Stacey Snider. "In the hands of Peter Jackson, we have a master of cinematic storytelling to bring it to the screen."

"When you read an emotionally magical story that cries out to be turned into a major motion picture, you hope its winding path can find its way to the door of your own company," said Steven Spielberg. "Peter Jackson has made this possible and I am so grateful to him, Fran and Film 4 for giving 'The Lovely Bones' a home at DreamWorks."

"Alice Sebold's story affects readers in deeply personal ways and the most important consideration for me was finding a studio partner who felt an equally strong connection with the book. Not just in sharing our emotional reaction to the story, but our desire to see it told in an original, adventurous way on screen," said Peter Jackson. "I eagerly look forward to the days and months ahead with Stacey, Steven, Adam Goodman and the team at Dreamworks."

"Film 4 have been nurturing this project for over five years," said Tessa Ross of Film 4. And now, to end up with Peter, Fran, Philippa and Dreamworks all together, is really as good as it gets. All of us at Film 4 are over the moon."

"All of us at DreamWorks join in welcoming Peter into our family of creative filmmakers," said Adam Goodman, DreamWorks' President of Production. "We look forward to working with him and giving him all the support that he and his team need and deserve."

Peter Jackson is one of the most successful filmmakers working today having directed, written, and produced the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy which combined have grossed almost $3 billion at the box office, been nominated for 30 Academy Awards, and won 17 Oscars including Best Picture for the third film, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Jackson personally took home Oscars for his direction and writing in "The Return of the King," as well as for Best Picture. In 2005, he directed, wrote and produced King Kong, for Universal. The film grossed over $500 million and won three Oscars.

Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh are frequent co-writers and producers with Peter Jackson. They have previously collaborated on the scripts for all three "Lord of the Rings" films and King Kong, as well as serving as producers on each of those films. Boyens and Walsh, like Jackson, were also honored with Oscars for their writing on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, with Walsh also winning for song writing and producing.

Wahlberg Replaces Gosling in The Lovely Bones
Source: Variety October 22, 2007

Mark Wahlberg has replaced Ryan Gosling in the Peter Jackson-directed The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel for DreamWorks.

Wahlberg has taken the role of Jack Salmon, the grieving father of a young girl. That role was vacated Friday by Lars and the Real Girl star Ryan Gosling, who stepped out one day before shooting began after gaining 20 pounds and growing a beard for the job. Variety says the exit is due to creative differences.

After reading the script, Wahlberg quickly committed Sunday. He joins Rachel Weisz as a couple whose world is shattered after their daughter is murdered. The girl watches over her family and her killer from heaven.

Jackson wrote the script with his "The Lord of the Rings" partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

The film begins shooting today in Pennsylvania, where Wahlberg most recently wrapped the lead in the M. Night Shyamalan-directed The Happening for Fox.

Wahlberg also recently committed to star with Brad Pitt in the Darren Aronofsky-directed The Fighter at Paramount. That picture is expected to begin production next fall.

The Lovely Lawsuit?
Fallout from Gosling's break with Bones.
by Stax (http://uk.movies.ign.com/email.html)

US, October 23, 2007 - The industry is buzzing about Ryan Gosling's abrupt departure (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/829/829183p1.html) Friday from director Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lovely Bones and his subsequent replacement Sunday by Mark Wahlberg. Reports have emerged suggesting what prompted Gosling to quit the film and what might happen to him as a result.

According to The Los Angeles Times, "Jackson was said to be quite surprised that Gosling had showed up to start work on The Lovely Bones looking like he'd donned a fat suit. According to sources, the 26-year-old Gosling had apparently told the director he was going to gain weight to age himself up to play the part of a grieving father, but Jackson was still expecting some movie star allure -- not paunch and a beard."

"By Friday, Gosling had left the high-profile production over those pesky 'creative differences,' and, by Sunday, he'd been replaced by 36-year-old Mark Wahlberg, who actually could be old enough to father a teenager," the paper reports.

Now Slate.com claims that "apparently, the break with Gosling may lead to litigation" against the actor. The Lovely Bones is a DreamWorks movie, which means that would be Steven Spielberg's outfit suing him. Yikes.

Gosling out at 'Bones'

By Michael Klein
Inquirer Columnist

Actor Ryan Gosling packed up and left the Main Line over the weekend.

This ended a whirlwind of talks with filmmaker Peter Jackson and execs over his role in The Lovely Bones, the drama that started shooting yesterday in Malvern.

My source says filmmakers were irked at Gosling's plans for the role of Jack Salmon, the lead character's father. Gosling grew a beard, shaved a bald spot into his scalp and put on lots of weight - much more than the "20 pounds" that the trades posited yesterday. "Creative differences" was the stated reason for his departure Saturday.

Mark Wahlberg was overnighted the script and just like that, he was on board opposite Rachel Weisz.

Wahlberg, who has shot The Happening, Invincible, The Italian Job and The Shooter in the area, will arrive tomorrow. His scenes are to begin later this week, so the six-week shoot will be unaffected.
:csad:

On a different note good to see Wahlberg back in Philly again!

US, October 29, 2007 - After it was announced that Ryan Gosling quit (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/829/829183p1.html) director Peter Jackson's upcoming adaptation of The Lovely Bones and was replaced by Mark Wahlberg, there was a flurry of industry reports and speculation about what caused the departure. Now Gosling himself has gone on the record about what happened and castigated the media for rumor-mongering.

"I think, people are making it a far more interesting story than it actually is," Gosling informed Parade.com/culturepop. "The age of the character versus my real age was always a concern of mine. Peter and I tried to make it work and ultimately it just didn't. I think the film is much better off with Mark Walhberg in that role. Peter Jackson is an incredible filmmaker and I'm here to tell you that he has things up his sleeve that are going to blow peoples' minds. I'm going to be the first person in line to buy tickets."

Flicks.Co.Nz reports that Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" has ceased filming due to a rift between Jackson and his art director over the best way to depict Heaven.

A large portion of film takes place in that mythological/spiritual realm where the main character Susie Salmon looks down on her family after her murder.

The Wellington crew are said to be having a break while the creative differences are sorted. The project has undergone some visible arguments before, notably Ryan Gosling being replaced by Mark Wahlberg several days before filming began at Jackson's behest.

In related news, Susan Sarandon talked about her experience playing the comical alcoholic grandmother in the film with Empire this week. Whilst she praised Jackson, she seems more reluctant about her performance - "I'm really curious to see what it's like because he kept pushing me to be more and more extreme and sometimes that's when you make your big mistakes so I'm not sure how it will come off - it will be interesting to see it from the point of view of the audience"

The Lovely Bones Set for Fall of 2009
Source: ComingSoon.net May 3, 2008

On Thursday, New Zealand site Flicks.co.nz reported a rumor that director Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones had ceased production "due to a rift between the big man and his art director over the best way to depict Heaven. Given that a large portion of film takes place in that very location, with main character Susie Salmon looking down on her family after her murder, this seems a crucial point of difference." The site has since updated the story to make it seem like this happened a while back.

On top of that, DreamWorks/Paramount told us on Friday that the drama will hit theaters in the fall of 2009 and not on March 13, 2009 as it was reported by sites last year. We asked the studio if this had anything to with the supposed "rift" between Jackson and his art director, but that's not the case at all.

Turns out, the movie was never scheduled for March 13 at all, there has not been a delay or "rift," and a fall 2009 launch was always the plan. DreamWorks chief Stacey Snider cleared up the issue by telling ComingSoon.net, "It was a very smooth shoot with no dissent, and all heaven sequences requiring sets or Art Dept involvement were completed on schedule in March. The only shooting remaining involves blue-screen VFX elements, which will be shot in June."

An adaptation of the Alice Sebold best-selling novel, The Lovely Bones tells the story of Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), who is murdered, but continues to observe her family on Earth after her death.

Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, Michael Imperioli, Rose McIver and Carolyn Dando star in the film, co-written by Jackson and his King Kong and "Lord of the Rings" partners Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh

Good to know that there wasn't any friction between anyone.

I don't think we can start expecting a trailer, or even pictures, until early September.

From what I have seen I think this movie looks great. I have full faith in Peter Jackson, and the book is brilliantly suited to him, considering some of his earlier films, such as Heavenly Creatures.

zanos

From what you've seen? A handful of publicity photos that barely show anything and the lead actor dropping out of the film because he thinks they're trying to make it "too interesting?" Peter Jackson is probably turning this into some kind of murder mystery type film, because he knows it's probably going to gross about as much as Heavenly Creatures at the BO ($3,000), if he's actually faithful to the book.

danoyse
06-01-2009, 09:57 PM
Heavenly Creatures was a good film, though.

I think it has a strong cast (Mark Wahlberg wouldn't have been my first choice for the dad, but we'll see), and the book was really good, so I'm looking forward to it.

Someone on this dutch message board (http://forum.fok.nl/topic/732172/3/25) who attended the Cinema Expo yesterday says that the teaser trailer for Lovely Bones was shown there and in IMAX nonetheless.

It's been described as a beautiful trailer and it's even gotten him/her to buy the book!Apparently the trailer is supposed to make it's debut in two weeks time.

Edit - I made a slightly inaccurate translation. The message board member read it on someone else's Twitter page.:o

Susie Salmon IS a kid when she dies, which is why theres a childlike quality to the visuals in Heaven.

I'm iffy on the tone, though. I agree that there's something off about it per the trailer. This should not be an action movie, or a thriller, really, and it's a drama, not a melodrama. I'm feeling a melodramatic overtone to all this, and elements of it are borderline cheesy. I was hoping he'd reign himself in just a bit more. We'll see. It may be how the trailer is cut.

We know it because Saoirse Ronan's character knows it. I havent actually read it, but this is what everybody says.

Interesting trailer... but I have to ask it. I never read the novel this was based on, but it seems obvious to me the boyfriend is the murderer going by the trailer. I mean they practically give it away. Hope I am wrong though.
You're very wrong I'm afraid.

Putting this in spoilers, just in case. Stanley Tucci's character rapes and kills her, and from the afterlife, she tries to help her family realize who the killer is. I think that's how it works, anyway. It's been a few years since I read the book. PJ looks like he's going to do a great job translating it to film.

I finally saw the trailer and it looks really good. Probably going to be one of the year's best. As for "figuring it out," the trailer pretty clearly states who the killer is because she knows who killed her. It's not a secret.

Yep, you're wrong. The murder happens at the beginning of the book and you know who it is then.

and it's not the boyfriend, it was the creepy neighbor

It's not a mystery story at all, and there's nothing to give away. It's about Susie's time in the 'in-between' after she's murdered and how she watches over her family and her killer in the years that pass.

Usually in the cliche murder movie trailers the guy who looks like the pedophile/psychopath is actually just some innocent introverted geek who just happens to be a little eccentric, so that when they reveal it's the good looking boyfriend who was supposedly in love with her, everyone is shocked. If you take out the monologue and just showed the serial killer aspects from that footage, I would have guessed the boyfriend. Guessing the novel didn't even bother with the distraction of "who did it".

The novel didn't have to. It was entirely told from Susie's point of view, and she was killed by Mr. Harvey (Tucci's character) in the first chapter.

"Who did it" is actually a big part of the book, but not in the way you're thinking of it. While Susie knows who killed her and where her body was dumped, no one else does. They suspect Mr. Harvey and get into all kinds of trouble trying to prove it was him. Susie spends the years watching her family and friends struggle with trying to find closure with it. And she's looking for her own closure with it so she can go on to heaven and be at peace herself.

In the book, the boyfriend is an early suspect, but he had a solid alibi and he was quickly dismissed. But we already know it's not him because we already saw Susie's murder. The boyfriend becomes friends with a girl who Susie's ghost 'passed through' when she left this world (that is in the trailer), and in the years that pass that leads to an important moment between them.

In the trailer, Susie narrates about her own murder, so it's obvious that we're going to know everything that really happened from her point of view in the film.
