Well, Kong made 14,000,000 yesterday according to Box office mojo. Looks like a weekend take of around 45-48 million and a total of 60-64 million over the 5 days. I was expecting more out of all the hype they gave Kong. I guess a big monster movie doesn't appeal to the general audience during the holidays. This would have done much better in the summer.

Kong won't be number 2 both domestically and worldwide.
Potter will be number 2 domestically and maybe 1 or 2 worldwide.
Domestically I would say Narnia, WOTW and Kong will fight for the number 3 slot.
i doubt Narnia will get to #3, maybe if Kong has great word of mouth, it could catch up to Narnia

Narnia has a chance at getting the number 3 slot. Now that the holidays will kick in many families will go out to see both Narnia and Kong and both should have good legs. But I think both Narnia and Kong are going to be very close to each other in their total domestic grosses.
One thing is for certain...internationally Narnia will beat Kong. Kong opened in more than 50+ territories and earned 80 million. While that is a good number it's not enough to get over 400 million internationally. Especially with such a low opening in one of the bigger market places such as Japan which it opened at a disappointing 2.9 million. The low opening is partly due to releasing it at the wrong time with Potter still very active in Japan. With that said it will make probably around 300 million internationally and that is quite a good number but not enough to propel it to amazing heights.
Narnia on the other hand has grossed more than 60 million in only 13 territories with it's last opening taking place in Japan. Considering other fantasy titles that have opened in Japan, Narnia should have a good to great run in Japan especially since Potter will be out of the theaters by the time Narnia opens. So I expect Narnia to get very close to or surpass 400 million in the international gross and a total of 600-650 million worldwide.
Kong will probably be in the 500-600 million range worldwide.

Comingsoon's predictions:
Cheaper by the Dozen 2: $28 to 30 million in its first five days with about $21 to 23 million over the Christmas weekend on its way to around $100 million total.
Fun with Dick and Jane: $20 to 22 million in its first five days with about $15 to 17 million over the weekend and less than $50 million total.
Memoirs of a Geisha: $7 to 9 million over Christmas weekend on its way to under $35 million total.
Munich: $6 to 7 million over Christmas weekend on its way to a total of $50 million or more.
The Producers: Between $1 and 2 million on Christmas Day on its way to roughly $25 million overall, more if it's able to get into the Oscar race.
The Ringer: While this may be able to make $3 to 4 million over the Christmas weekend, it will be lucky if it comes anywhere close to $8 million total.
Rumor Has It...: $5 to 6 million on Christmas Day on its way to around $50 million total.
Wolf Creek: $2 to 3 million on Christmas Day on its way to around $18 million total.

King Kong has opened in 54 territories already, so it doesnīt look like it will be huge overseas. Narnia actually has a better shot, since itīs actually in a lot less countries. But neither of these movies will reach the 700 m-plus worldwide numbers the studios were hoping for. Expectations for Kong were huge, that it would even rival Harry Potter, now itīs doubtful. Itīs indeed a really weird year at the BO. Still, like Batman Begins, if it wasnīt a good movie, it would have being a huge flop. Itīd have been another Stealth or xXx2.

It should've been the best Superhero movie ever made.

Key-word: FANTASTIC four.
They shouldn't've made it if they couldn't procure a WAY bigger budget and handing over Jack Kirby's baby to A GUY WHO HADN'T EVEN REMOTELY PROVEN HIMSELF as a director of kinetic, hyper-visual, action/fx-oriented movies was just plain offensively stupid.
Yes, the characterization is SO important, but not ALL-important.
What does it matter that Chiklis was perfectly cast as the Thing and gave a phenomenal performance if he was playing a guy made out of rock-skin that looks like a gummi-bear?
It's like saying that Star Wars would've been just as good if every ship was a paper plate tied to a string and they scratched the film to make the lasers and lightsabers.
Ridiculous.

Itīs not that itīs lighthearted, itīs not that itīs "unpretentious"... Itīs stupid. Itīs the kind of movie that assumes "fun" means you gotta wink at your audience all the time, that assumes itīs okay to underestimate your audienceīs intelligence at every corner, as long as itīs in the name of "fun". When you look at the history of the FF in comics, the richness of their storytelling potential, itīs practically criminal. In some ways itīs more perverse than Batman & Robin, because at least that movie never tried to pretend that it was true to the spirit of Bill Finger or Frank Millerīs work, while this dares to say itīs the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby FF.

I thought Fantastic Four was a pretty fun flick. It's amazing how so many people can praise the X-Men films, which singer did a horrible hack job on, and bash the hell out of FF.
The X-Men films shove everyone else to the background just for the sake of putting Wolverine front and center when they should be ensamble films, and even with all the time they spend (waste) on him, they can't even get him right. He's little more than a generic bad-ass that can't back up his b.s. because he gets his ass royally handed to him everytime he fights a mutant.
Reed is over analytical and thinks too much while not acting enough, Johnny is overly impulsive and acts too quickly without thinking, Ben is an outcast trying desperately to come to terms with has happened to him, and Sue is the maternal figure that's trying to keep to maintain a peaceful co-existence between the conflicting personalities around her; the way these conflicting personalities(personalities, something the bulk of the X-Men characters don't have)interact and come together was far more interesting than watching Singer's flat as a board excuses for characterizations pointlessly swallow up screen time.
Wolverine is a generic bad-ass. Storm has no personality. Jean has no personality. Cyclops has no personality, Rogue and Iceman were butchered and have done nothing of any significance through 2 entire films other than petty crap that anyone could've done like clumsily landing the X-jet and engaging in a pointless puppy love story that doesn't do a damned thing besides waste time(not to mention they're both horribly mis-cast. Rogue should be vuloptuous, Paquin hardly fits; and it'd be tough for Ashmore's acting couldn't be more wooden if he were a cigar store Indian), Sabretooth, Deathstrike, and even Mystique are used as little more than mindless, cool looking goons...
Singer defined most of the characters solely by the powers without giving them distinct characteristics as people that made them worth caring about. All the guy did was point and shoot, his direction was non-existent. They're bad films (to be generous) and worse adaptions.

Here are my predictions:
War of the Worlds is going to be VERY AVERAGE, do AVERAGE BOX OFFICE and start all sorts of, "Is Spielberg on the downward spiral? and, "When was the last good Spielberg film?" accusations.
King Kong will be awesome, outdo War of the Worlds in every way, and have the critics saying, "With Lord of the Rings and now the majestic King Kong, Peter Jackson has taken the crown from Steven Spielberg and George Lucas."
Star Wars Episode III will be the best prequel, but only by default. Writing, acting and directing will be as bland as Episodes I and II, but the sheer ammount of lightsaber battles, ties to the original trilogy and the appearence of Darth Vader will make it the most entertaining of the prequels.
Batman Begins will be very much a product of it's time; beginning as a sword-swinging epic with stunning widescreen landscapes, before becoming a darker and much subtler version of Spider-Man. Does very well but not one of the year's top three hits, and doesn't rake in Spider-Man size box office. Critics suggest the superhero craze MAY BE on the wane, finally.
Fantastic Four is the anti-superhero movie snowball picking up speed. Audiences just see it as a yet another comicbook extravaganza, and the critics state the animated The Incredibles had more heart and brains and more convincing characters (you just know the critics will say this WHATEVER FF is like). The relatively small budget compared to Spidey 2, X2 et al means it's somehwat underwhelming as a spectacle. Very average box office.

The top 15 films of 2005 performed as well at the box office as the top 15 films of 2004; however, every film below the top 15 performed worse, Daily Variety reported today (Friday) in a year-end analysis of the top 100 films at the box office. The trade publication pegged the total for the year at around $8.75 billion, down 5 percent from $9.2 billion a year ago, while admissions dropped 11 percent to 1.32 billion from 1.48 billion. (It marked the third consecutive year of declining attendance.) Variety observed that only two studios, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, posted higher box-office earnings this year than last. It pointed out that Fox had received a big boost from Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, which earned $380 million, making it the year's top grosser. It failed to point out, however, that Lucasfilm, which fully funds its productions, also takes all of the profits, paying the studio only a flat distribution fee.

According to IMDB, BB was the tenth top selling DVD of 2005, with 6,15 million copies. Among the movies released at theaters in 2005, it lost only to SW and Madagascar. Among PG-13 movies (animation and PG movies dominate the DVD market), including the older releases, it lost only to SW. It outsold movies that beat it theatrically, including WOTW, CATCF (a family PG-rated movie, no less) and Mr and Mrs Smith (beat it worldwide on the BO). FF sold 2,4 m in the first day, but probably dropped high after that, in three weeks it wasnīt even in the top eight selling DVDs anymore and it didnīt make it to the top ten. itīs not uncommon, some DVDs make 70% or more of its sales in the first day.

WOTW had some awesome effects, but it also had ridiculously redundant action scenes that wore thin after the first time, one laughably convenient escape after another for the main characters, and worst of all, horrid main characters that were so freaking irritating that I was rooting for aliens...plus the lame, anti-climactic as hell ending.
It's a terrible film, easily one of the worst of the year.

I like a lot of Smith movies. I enjoyed I Robot. I didn't necessarily dislike WOTW but I just enjoy it as much as the others. Although I'm not a Cruise fan at all.
On one hand though, if you don't respect the actor it's kinda hard to get into their movies for some people.

Which means next week it'll make 5-6 million, then 2-3 million, etc so I don't think it will either.
shame... looks like KK will end up in 550 or close to that and Narnia will get to 650

That was surprising. I had a feeling Narnia would do very well but I thought Kong would do as good if not better. Not taking away Kong success but last Holiday season belonged to Narnia.
yeah... Kong had alot going for it but people were just... not seeing it as much as Narnia, i just the running time didnt really help that too

It did and it was a stunning piece of cinema but, I don't plan on buying it on dvd. I think maybe the reason is because I'm not a fan of the character and I think I might have not been alone. Add that to the runtime, maybe it was all just a big turnoff for others to go see it and for it to have a lot of repeat business.
if it was stunning why arent you going to bye the dvd?

I think Gone With the Wind is a great movie, and I can see why it got a lot of Oscars yadda yadda. I just don't need to own it.
Same thing with Kong. I can see that it's good but I almost only need to see it once.

What I notice about the 2005 BO is it seems to be going further and further towards the PG-rated movies, at least for the really big bucks. Except for SW, which is something of its own, the only movies to break the 600m-plus barrier worldwide will be PG-rated fantasies. Both WOTW and King Kong, which were expected to be phenomena, have fallen a little bit short of these expectations. Sure, WC is R-rated, but it didnīt make a peep overseas.

Well, movies aimed for kids rarely needs to be spectacular to be successful. And especially CGI-movies have been hot for some years now. But I think from now on they need to do something special, even with CGI-movies, because more and more seems to be released every year, and with this flood there comes the usual decrease in quality.

KK looks to be about as profitable as Batman Begins, around two and a half times its production budget. It will be a pretty profitable movie, especially once it gets on DVD, whatīs really sad about it is it had all this hype and expectation and itīs really a great movie, I guess people simply felt Narnia was more acessible to children and was more of a holidays movie or whatever.
i was sure KK would atleast beat WOTW... i still havent seen it though, Miunch seems to be doing bad too

Harry Potter made over $250,000 last weekend and Narnia made over $2,000,000. If this keeps up than Narnia will just edge out Potter.
Which is funny since Potter worldwide is the highest grossing movie but domestically it will come in 3rd.

The Harry Potter movies have always made much more money internationally than in North America. Just look at Prisoner of Azkaban. Only number six in North America, beaten by movies like Meet the Fockers, but worldwide it was number two

Why do you think so? Narnia is still in BO list and it will be in BO list 10 weeks more.
So it have much time to make more than$300m.
i doubt that, its droping by %30 every weekend, and they are also droping cinema's too. It'll be lucky to get to 295 IMO

It's interesting analyzing the Domestic (American) vs Foreign box office.
1. Star Wars made the most domestically, while Harry Potter made the most worldwide.
2. Kong only made 10 million more than Batman Begins domestically but 150 million woldwide.
3. Narnia is looking to overtake Potter domestically but it won't worldwide.
