Hey, is Haunted Knight really worth picking up? I've read Long Halloween and Dark Victory and loved them both, but I hear Haunted Knight has several unrelated stories in it. Is it still worth a look?
It's nowhere near as good as TLH and DV (neither did it pretend to be), but it's definitely a fun read. And if you're a fan of Tim Sale's artwork, it's practically a must. I always kind of disliked the "Ghosts" story, but "Madness" and especially "Fears" are very good.

Carmine Falcone

There is one panel in Madness that I just love with a passion.
It is the Mad Hatter stepping forward out of the shadows with his hat and his gun in his hands. He says something like ''You can always have more tea, can't you Alice?''

I love it.

I really like Sale's Joker in Haunted Knight, as his jaw isn't WAAAAAAY too big like it gets in his later works. (Don't get me wrong, Sale's my favorite comic artist, I just really don't like his Joker)

I just finally read The Long Halloween and am up to Dark Victory, TLH is not that bad but it doesn't have that epic scope like Dark Knight Returns and like Frank Miller's art, it takes time to get accustomed to Tim Sale's art but it's still a good mystery story to read.

WHAT!? The Long Halloween definitely has that epic scale to it. It feels like "The Godfather", meets "Se7en", spliced with "Batman." And "Dark Victory" is just as good. Two of the best comics i've ever read.

But DKR had Batman more involved as he takes out Two-Face, then he fights with the mutant leader in a boxing ring type, then he eludes the police as he's trying to reach Joker after he's killed those people at the David Endochrine show and then Bats fights Joker in the carnival and finally his take down of Superman.

TLH was just "meh".

Carmine Falcone
08-24-2005, 06:26 AM
TLH is not meh.

I love DKR, DV and TLH. Some of my favorite comics. All amazing.

JLBats
08-24-2005, 10:09 AM
Long Halloween was not epic. It was incredible, but not epic. DKR was written in full fledged operatic mode. THAT was epic.

Infinity9999x
08-24-2005, 12:53 PM
DKR was great, it was the first Batman GN that I read, but I thought TLH, HK, and DV were better Batman stories. They were more in depth and covered the Detective aspect of Batman much better. (well TLH and DV did) I thought DKR, TLH, and DV were all epic. DKR was just a diffrent kind of story, it really wasn't the version of Batman I liked the most. I still love it, but it's not my favorite.

I agree that Sales art takes some time to get used to, I was kinda iffy on it when I first picked up TLH last year. Now though I really enjoy his art, he's very different from everyone else and that's what I like.

Although I doubt I ever really care for his Joker....I just don't like the way he draws him.

He's good, but some of his stuff bother's me.

His Batman, muscle-wise, makes Jim Lee's Batman look wirey. I didn't know that human beings had THAT many muscles on their sides.

Plus, his Catwoman is MEGA-BUTCH. His Selina is awesome--reminds me of Michelle a bit--but Catwoman makes Alex Ross' Wonder Woman look feminine.

The long lower teeth of Joker's just pull me away. GODDAMN.

Still like most of Sale's stuff, but that stuff bothers me a bit.

Why is this good? It's not that great. His Superman has a big fat head with a few dots and a line for the face, he looks like he's retarded, and Batman has a triangle for a nose. I know this is an appreciation thread, but still... Maybe I'm just dumb, but I really can't understand what all the fuss is about with Tim Sale. And that'd probably make everyone I know IRL dumb too, because none of them seem to like his art either. My one brother compared his rendition of Selina Kyle to Michael Jackson. I feel like he's kind of overrated.

^ All art is subjective, even comics art. The people who post in this thread like Sale's art. There are probably people who don't like it... probably there are people who don't like Jim Lee's stuff... or Neal Adams... take your pick of artists.

Anyways... lets get back to Sale's work.

I meant those 3 were the highest during most of the round...when Lee got eliminated and Mignola was still standing was bull**** because right after the people voting for Mignola and against Lee eliminated Mignola themselves and voted for Adams. Was sweet to get payback and have Sale win.

He isn't one of my favourite artists, but i respect that he draws different to the normal artists and uses his own style.

WHAT!? The Long Halloween definitely has that epic scale to it. It feels like "The Godfather", meets "Se7en", spliced with "Batman." And "Dark Victory" is just as good. Two of the best comics i've ever read.It feels like "The Godfather" because TLH has scenes taken directly from "The Godfather".

One of my favorite images from the whole series. Tim Sale is the man.

I LOVE TIM SALE's ART... he draws Spiderman like no one has ever seen! AMAZING....

however, when he draws Daredevil, it looks a lot like his version of Bruce Wayne WITH A MASK ON (in my opinion) AND HIS BATMAN IS THE DEFINITIVE MODERN BATMAN TO ME!

it beats the hell outta Jim Lee.... i hate his rendition ALTHOUGH some of the other artwork in the HUSH SAGA was killer....

his version of the man of steel looks like Pee Wee Herman on crack!

I dunno it looks INTERESTING (NOT BAD)... but no one draws BATMAN or Spidey better

Tim Sale is easily my favourite artist, and this comes from a guy who thinks most of the praised artists are overrated. I just love his "drawn" style, exaggerated characters, noir atmosphere. He's also a brilliant storyteller. Unlike someone like Jim Lee, each panel is part of the bigger picture and gives reason. Not bashing Jim Lee at all, I just think he's a tad overrated.

He also draws the definitive Two-Face in my opinion, and I love his joker which some people don't like. I'd certainly agree that some panels don't work with him, but in most he looks great.

Hehe, I was trying to avoid kicking up a whole bunch of Jim Lee fans but I might as well say it: I find his stuff tremendously overrated, Tim Sale for the win etc. :oldrazz:

I like Jim Lee for certain things. I think he's a good artist to come into comics with because he's mostly very standard. Tim Sale FTW though. Even though I've started to hate Loeb, I'll still by anything with Tim Sale's name on it.

Yes, Jim Lee is overrated. I just don't like his style. With is overly muscular characters where their shoulders are the size of their heads. They just all look too perfect. Am I the only one who sees this?

Tim Sale >>>>>> Jim Lee
