Devito did a good job with his character. One dispicable actor playing a dispicable villain. Perfect!. Some aspects of Pequin were missing in Devito's performance though.

DeVitos Penguin was a different approach to the character, which totally loved.....his whole distgusting appearecne and stuff was so cool to see. That slime drippin out his mouth, it was awesome.
Penguin: Your just mad because im a genuine freak and you have to wear a mask.
Batman: Maybe
Penguin: You dont think you'll really win do you?
Batman: Things change
I love that whole dialouge scene. Everything DeVito's penguin said was great for me.....great job by Burton doing this one.
So DeVitos penguin all the way!!!!!!! his wont be beat

Penguin: Just think, its a hot night in the mayor's mansion, you come in twicthin your little tail, me on the bed slippers in one hand and dry martini in the other
Catwomen: Please Oswald, i wouldnt touch you to scratch you
Penguin: You lousy minsque, i should have you spaded...you sent out all the signals, and i dont think i like you anymore.
Another Scene
Pengiun: Why should i listen to some catbroad, who's probably some messed up sorority chick who's mad at her dad for not buying her a pony for her sweet 16 birthday
(Driving the batmobile)
Penguin: I know this is a bad time to mention this, but my lisence expired hahaha.
Penguin: My troops are out stealing your children. The one's you left defesenless at home, so you's get dress up like jerks, get drunk and dance BADLY!
(Penguin is dying, all the blood and slime is coming out of his mouth, hes choking)
Penguin: EHHH, the heats getting to me
(Batman turns around to see Penguin still alive)
Penguin: Dont worry, ill killl you momentarily....but i first i need an ic..e c..old drink ehhhh
(Penguin collapses and dies)
All of DeVito's lines in this movie were great. The way he said them, that voice was so cool. He ruled as Penguin and nobody will beat his performance.

Without Danny Devito as the Penguin, would they have had the similar appearance in the Animated Series? Both Devito and Paul Williams were excellent in my opinion. Burgess Meredith had a great look for the Penguin at the current time. Even now, I still remember the *Wheh wheh wheh* laugh of his, which was caused by his cigarettes. Devito also used that classic laugh. Each actor/voice actor mentioned brought a little something to the classic villain.

They all rock.
Burgess was the first and therefore holds a special place in my heart.Love that elegant waddle and his cackling squwaks.
Paul Williams was such a classy Penguin. His voice was perfect for Pengy in the animated series.I missed him in Mystery of the Batwoman.
And Danny DeVito is just awesome. He really showed Penguin's nasty side.Biting noses, chewing raw fish, demolishing the Batmobile,Proposing to Catwoman,Kidnapping Gothams first borns and sending his army of Penguins in to blow up Gotham. What didn't this guy do?

Burgess Meredith was the best Penguin of them all!

From the 60's series he was the closest that it came towards any of the other characters.

Penguin works better with a scarred psyche, and is more imposing as a darker figure. but then again i always thought the idea of Penguin was rather absurd, short little fat man with long pointy nose controls mob and has umbrellas.
i love the mutant freak of the sewer, i don't think i could say that enough
DeVito owned

I think that they all brought something to the mix. Burgess was the original, clad in classic Penguin garb at the time. Also with the *Wheh Wheh* laugh. Nobody can forget that.
Devito gave us an amazing look at the Penguin with Tim Burton. He was still a dirty businessman underneath all the creepyness, and he still had the *Wheh Wheh* laugh.
Williams gave us the businessman in the form of Devito's appearance. He was well-spoken (vocabulary-wise), and he was borderline legit (to a point).
All three had an impact on the character. All of them positive.

They were forced to use the DeVito appearance in TAS. When the series changed to WB, they used the classic comic book appearance.

Like your avatar. Lol.
Seriously, you're right but I think it's because Burton wanted to make it a monster-man instead an average short guy with an umbrella. OR could it be called 'character fusion with dramatic purposes'

Actually, Bruce Timm never wanted to use Danny Devito's Penguin design, but he was forced to so his TV show could tie in to the movie somewhat. Just like he was forced to design Selina Kyle like Michelle Phfeiffer (though I prefered this design over his redesign of her).
Once Timm was able to have more freedom, he redesigned Penguin to look more like his comic counterpart

But I gotta go with Burgess, if only for his disguise as Commodore Schmidlapp in Batman: The Movie.

I love Burgess Meredith because he was always choking on the smoke from his cigarettes, but my favorite is Danny DeVito.
Personally, I grew up with DeVito and Burton's re-interpretation of the character. And unlike the protesting parents and whining children, I fell in love with it.
But now that I'm older and more mature (at least the former anyway :D ) while I still prefer DeVito from him being inprinted onto me when I was younger, I think Burgess Merideth most closely resembles the Penguin from the comic books, and pulled it off with such charm and humor.
Merideth was the Penguin brought to life off of the comic book page!

is this even a question? danny devito all the way, best version of penguin so far. i dont count TAS version cuz it wasnt liveaction, and burgess meredith was alright, but way too silly and not deadly or any kind of threat. devito was a villian, through and through, as bad as they come. and he was brilliant.
Darkest Knight
07-15-2007, 09:19 PM
Burgess was plenty of a threat. He was the man. I take it you never saw the 60's series. He nailed the character as close as one could come to the source.
Joker

Burgess Meredith's Penguin was the most iconic and popular villain on that show. Apparently they always had a script waiting for him should he happen to come into town.
I voted for Meredith him and Frank Gorshin really make that show watchable. One of the most memorable performances in any media, simply iconic like the poster above me mentioned that show was the only time I liked The Penguin character before Batman Returns.
I liked what DeVito did because I always hated this character in the comics and contrary to what some younger posters may think we didn't quite have that gentlemanly but corrupt dude who became really popular with fans during No Man's Land and with the Animated Series. He was still campy as hell back in the early 90's so I don't blame Burton and company for reinventing an otherwise irrelevant character at the time.
Williams has a regal and eloquent voice that is just perfect for the character, better than anything the other 2 ever did vocally. His voice is what I hear in my head whenever a comic features The Penguin. He's as definitive in that end as Conroy but ultimately Burgess Meredith embodied the character and all his mannerisms to a T. DeVito's was influenced by Meredith like someone else mentioned so I don't give it as much credit in that regard.

I think it's THE performance of Devito's career. As the Penguin he just goes beserk. A vile, disgusting character, close to a monster. Almost a caricature of the roles he's been typecast in -- the slimey businessman or conman. Okay, he's slimey as Cobblepot, only literally this time.

All three of them were good at what they did, but I think I like Devito's Penguin the most. They took a corny character and really made him dark, disturbing, and disgusting. But you could still be slightly sympathetic towards him because of what his parents did to him.
