you gotta have barrowman over tennant...
tennant just went "dig di de dig, dig di de dig...." but barrowman went "woo-ee-oo..." etc...
it's clear who has the power of song there...:oldrazz:
to be honest i thought some of his notes were a little shakey. The baseline was persistant:p:woot:

it makes little sense. We have to assume the doctor knew he was saxon all along. If we find out the doctor was evil before and perhaps ten helps him see the good so he becomes the doctor we know it might be alright.
Well, he could have been Saxon in a similar way to how the Valeyard existed. Saxon could've been a potential evil version or alternate universe version of Hartnell's Doctor.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'm hoping for the Master, myself. The Master really, really, really needs to appear. He's up there with the Daleks for the Doctor's best enemy, yet we haven't heard a peep from him. I was so hoping that the rumors of Anthony Head guest-starring as the Master last season were true, but instead he turned out to be some random loser alien. I need some Master! :cmad:

alternate realities get strange now that the bridge to this world is closed. Then if he came through the void why wasn't he sucked back in- saxon was well entrenched by love and monsters because thats when the first saxon referance appeared. I think there is too much expostition needed
however i sort of don't want it to be the master, i like a surprise

not as villains but seeing them fixing spaceships as they are meant to. Anthony Head did the voice on the cartoon on CBBC today- i had to endure 'totally dr who' for that and it wasn't even that good

I was watching New Earth today the one with all the sick people and the big face said to the Doctor he had to tell him something but he said he'll wait as they will meet a 3rd time, and he will tell him them.
Now that hasn't happened yet?
Also annoys me right on UKTV gold they finished season 2 on Saturday so I though yeah they are going back to the 9th Doctor, they didnt how many times have they shown this season!!

Thats its name the face of Bo, wonder what the message is. I liked that episode ''I'm a chav'' lol.

it was pretty average...
Its not really gonna stick out to me down the road.
I hope the series gets better because after the last series I have really high expectations but this episode just sorta well lowered them, I hope the rest aren't so mediocre.

its not hate, its just she was pretty bad in some scenes. Especially the one on the balcony. Compared to billie i think her acting is a step down but we'll see where she goes. Yet again though we get an uninspiring promo for the DVD that doesn't invest much hope

me too definitely and smith and jones was a great episode i give it 4/5 because even though i didn't think her performance was great i could ignore freema/martha because what was happening around was good. I liked the lighthearted and fun aspect of series 2 because i could see it was intentional. It was the lighthearted attitude that led to the finale and them being separated according to RTD so it worked.

the doctor was extremely out of character. the best example is him saying to rienette 'you don't want to listen to reason' and the entire plot of the satan pit was about the doctor's reliance on reason. I also didn't like how he sent his companions off to fight the monsters while he went dancing. There are killer robots on the loose but i'll dance with a french tart!
Add to that that two main characters were shafted in favour of a day player. Add to that it was the last series with billie and noel moffat should have made use of them.

after the runaway bride and him leaving the racnoss to suffer while he watched i got excited because i thought- darker doctor! But RTD has explicitly stated he doesn't want that and so started smith and jones with the doctor in the bed having a laugh and a giggle

...The Doctor was very much acting like the Doctor, he wasn't dancing he was formulating, trying to figure out why the Clockwork Androids would be there in the first place, notice how he comes back pretending to be drunk then killed the one Android it was part of the plan. The Doctor was telling her not to rely on reason because he didn't want her to give up. And why would you want to make use of Rose and Micky? I mean sure they're part of the story but you don't want them to be doing the whole adventure, that episode was brilliant it felt like old Troughton era type stuff.. IMO.

i'm sure dancing around with a woman whose breasts were half out was formulating a plan :cwink:
He knew why the androids were there he saw it in her mind before he went off dancing- he asks how old are you?
Him going off leaving rose and mickey to be captured was not part of the plan. If it was wouldn't he have been spying on them not 'dancing'.For all the doctor's talents he's not clairvoyant. The reason thing was mentioned after he hadn't seen her since she was ten just before she almost ate his face. She knew little of the droids except a nightmare so why should she want to give up? I would make use of rose and mickey for several reasons
a)its their last series and the last chance to write for those characters
b) its mickey's only proper tardis trip before he stays on parallel earth
c) rose is jealous about sarah jane but not rienette who he is snogging- continuity please!
d) they set up the doctor/rose relationship for two series at least play with how rose reacts the doctor's wandering eye- she does nothing and comes across as weak for it.
e) pompadour was only for one episode.it was valuble screen time to flesh out the leads like mickey who needed developing
don't get me wrong i love the design of the episode and the costumes and the idea of both being in the past and the future but the characterisation and priorities were wrong.
Oh and i missed the big one- the doctor left rose and mickey on a spaceship with no guarantee he could get back:cmad:

Runaway Bride is on DVD, I might have to get it, was a great episode would have been funny if Donna stayed on. But I loved it when the Doctor asked where she was when all the Alien events happened, she said drunk at a party or on holiday, was funny really.
But I keep wanting to buy the first season box set, but why is it still loads of money to buy lol, downloading them looks so much nicer.
And I thought season two had a better opening then this one, but you can't say this episode was better then a whole season yet as we havent seen all of this season yet.

well its split in sections so you can stay in the new series section if you want to. If you do not conform to their opinion you may be flayed alive. Over there everything is wonderful apparantly. Today someone posted a thread about similarities between the series like the new earth 'trilogy' of the end of the world, new earth, and gridlock(episode 3) or the historical episodes with mythical creatures like ghosts, a werewolf and witches on saturday. He got flamed for it- it was senseless. He had great ideas as well but all he got were responses like- 'have you noticed the doctor is in all three series as well'. well its split in sections so you can stay in the new series section if you want to. Awful- here is a lot friendlier even if we do ***** more than usual:woot:
See, I don't think I could deal with that. I rather like the New Who, so I like being in a place where the general consensus is similar to mine, but I like a forum where someone can bring up a disappointment or complaint without getting pounced on.
I should never have left ToonZone Forums.

got round to watching the first ep of the new series the other day. And it has to be said, what this show REALLY needs is to employ ACTORS as extra's.
The level of acting from the extra's and minor roles is quite appaling, and it really brings down the overall quality dramatically.

i gave the shakespeare code 3/5
It it was an average episode. It was heavily derivitive of 'the unquiet dead'. I thought this did it better but i think it had the scale and the money to do it better. So in that respect I don't know whether its a plus or a negative. I thought the witches where like pantomime villains- have old crones fine but counter that by realistic acting. Personally i thought freema was a little better- the scene in the tardis at the start and the one in the asylum were not good and a few lines here and there could have been better. There wasn't really any chemistry with shakespeare but like last week she blended in enough so i could focus on the story and the doctor. On second viewing i really appreciated the visuals more and the complexity of the writing.

Anyway, I liked this episode. A lot better than "Smith & Jones." I noticed a lot of parallels with "The Unquiet Dead." Doctor takes his assistant to the past, they meet a literary legend, and stop Britain from being invaded by seemingly supernatural aliens who supposedly disappeared long ago. Still works, though.
Also, Shakespeare digs the sistas. ;)

I'm waiting for the episode where a small, scared child will interact with alien tech, and become all-powerful.
By the by, I just had the wackiest thought. I don't think Rose knew the Doctor could read minds. I'm sure she knew he was telepathic on some level, as the TARDIS is psychic, and he's linked to the TARDIS on some weird level. But I don't think she ever saw him read someone's mind.

I didn't mind this weeks episode.
Tennant was great as always. Martha is starting to feel like she kinda belongs there. Nice to see the Doctor at the end discussing his past a little, it did a lot for Martha, if that makes sense.
And yes, I think it was pretty obvious that Tha Face Of Bow meant. The Master will be returning and if the rumours are true, that John Simm will be playing him, the count me as pumped.
Daleks In New York next week, should be interesting.

I liked Gridlock, The Dr was pretty pissed off the whole episode :D Brilliant, and OOOooooo another timelord (kind of) wonder what they will be about, didnt The Dr mention he had a son awhile back? im sure he said something like "I used to have a son once" or did i dream that?
regwec
04-16-2007, 08:34 AM
Gridlock was generally well written, and the characterisation of The Doctor was good. The problem was its central conceit: nobody would bother to take a 20 year car journey to travel a few miles. It just doesn't make any sense. It would be believable if the travellers thought they were migrating to another planet, when in fact they were in a loop, but it was absurd to imagine that anybody would bother to sit in a tin box or half their life. However bad the underbelly of New New York was, it had to be better than that.

I think it is, this is kind of like a fail safe, because we are on like the 11th? Doctor as it is once we reach 13 its game over, unless someone else can carry it on, thats why they are speculating over this i think. Doubt he would be like a Child or anything just someone who looks in their 20s maybe or something.

Another great episode .... The last ten minutes were Who gold and most of the acting was solid.
I think the general idea was that the people in the cars simply didn't know any better so they were happy to spend years travelling very short distances .... but this was not really made clear. Perhaps the ONLY way to get out of the city was on these sealed roads?? ......

as for gridlock- it was good but i'm really pissed off at the amount of scenes being replicated- like the shot from series 2 on the moniter, martha pointing the gun and saying take me back like rose did in the satan pit, the entire doctor/companion relationship was the same as 'the end of the world' with chunks of dialogue just reused.
on the other hand brannigan! the kittens saying mama:O tennant's acting when describing gallifrey awesome.
my opinions on martha remain unchanged- her behaviour considering she's known him two days is completely irrational. this person puts it best

I did and this part.
We never saw the Doctor sit down and explain things to Rose...because Rose didn't need an explanation. The Doctor and Rose shared things on a deep intuitive level. Rose seeing Bo hurt would have gone to comfort Bo and the Doctor...and she would have instinctively known that the Doctor was confused and pained by the idea of "You Are Not Alone"...she would have hugged him...he would have buried his face in her hair and WE, the audience, would never get to HEAR him talk about Gallifrey. He would certainly HAVE talked about Gallifrey with Rose. But it would have had to be off screen with him cuddled in her arms late at night. It would be a scene there was no way to show on Doctor Who without setting off all the shippy sensors. Also, Rose would have been reluctant to see him in pain and would have soothed him and told him it was okay...he didn't need to talk about it.
There both different characters, of course there going to act different, one may care about people more, the other might not. We didn't want a carboard cut out of Rose did we? No we want some else and that who and is what Maratha is, I bet you, you will grow to like her I have, I still have issues now and then with her, but I don't find her that annoying now, shes ok, not 'i like her' straight away like I did with Rose, but she's ok.
And I like her as she is kind of Stubbon.

I'm going to step away from the herd, and say that I like Martha. More or less.
What I think rubs most people about Martha the wrong way (aside from maybe Freema's acting, which I think is alright) is that she is immediately (and overtly) showing her crush on the Doctor, while the Doctor clearly doesn't feel the same way. We, the viewers, are emotionally invested in the Doctor, and the good ol' Doc isn't emotionally invested in Martha. Sure, he cares about her wellbeing. He took her on this trip, and he's responsible for her. Plus the Doctor just hates to see any decent creature suffer.
But he didn't instantly attach himself to Martha the way he did to Rose. Remember when the Doctor told Rose he was all alone? She said "there's me," and they shared a brief moment. When Martha said "You've got me," the Doctor immediately dismissed her. With Rose, he didn't lie to her. He just changed the subject or didn't answer. With Martha, he didn't have any problem lying about his people.
And the Doctor telling his companions that he's the last Time Lord? He eventually opened up to Rose. Martha? She had the force it out of him.
And it's that lack of emotional attachment on the part of the Doctor that's carrying over to the fans. The Doctor, despite finding them a bit annoying, loved his people. Then they all died. Then he emotionally cut himself off. Then he met Rose, and loved her. Then he lost her. So he cut himself off, again. He's not making himself available to Martha, and following suit, neither are we.
Now, let me rattle of Martha's positive points. She's level-headed. She was one of the few people in that hospital that didn't lose their heads. She was even smart enough not to accept the government's stupid cover-ups for all the weird stuff that happens to London all the time (the whole world sees ghosts for 2 months, watches them turn into Cybermen, claims it was all terrorists and chemicals, and everyone believes it.... right). She's curious, and that seems to be one of her driving forces. And as stated before, she serves her purpose as a companion by getting the Doctor to explain things, and giving us an outsider's view of the universe.
Enough to love her as much as Rose? No, of course not. I only sort of like her. But she hardly warrants the contempt she seems to be getting. I just think Martha needs to find her relationship with the Doctor. She could be on her way to restoring the platonic Doctor-Companion relationships of days long passed.

QFT- the problem is that calmness and acceptance of the extra ordinary is just generic companion stuff- nothing to mark martha out. Surely if she was curious as you said she would have heard the noises and at least found some way to look out at what was down there- she just stood there. And that speech 'i have the doctor' her reliance on him rescuing her like a damsel in distress isn't required. Even if she can't get out she needs to be looking like she's trying.

Funny. I don't remember Rose doing much of anything until the episode "Dalek."
episode 1- she swings in and saves the doctor's life using the tools around her. Even he acknowledges it at the end
episode 2- not much but when trapped she did try to escape only for the doctor to tell her to stay put
episode 3- provided a moral debate with the doctor when the gelth wanted to use the dead bodies. Made an attempt to rescue the old woman while the doctor was talking to dickens.
episode 4- took harriet jones under her wing searched downing steet for alien tech, found the dead prime minister.
episode 5 - helped avoid the slitheen and came up with the idea of the small cupboard so they could ride out the bomb probably saving their lives. Had the final answer of 'bad breath' that helped the doctor narrow the species down.
episode 6- dalek!
the point is she didn't always succeed but she tried. She thought well and didn't stand around when she could be doing something.
there is a new promo out today-

If we're going to count "rattling off suggestions and observations," then Martha's done quite a bit, too. Also, in episode 2, Rose's whole attempt at escape was hitting the door several times. That equals about as much Martha grabbing the gun or fighting her kidnappers in the alleyway.
My point was that you can't complain that Martha's not doing as much as Rose would've done, because Rose just stood there and played "damsel in distress" in her first couple of episodes about as much as Martha has. "Series 2" Rose would've found her own way out of the fast lane. "First Few Episodes" Rose would've sat there worried for dear life about as much as Martha. The only difference I can think of is that Rose wouldn't have sung along to that hymn.

martha did a bit in smith and jones but her grand total of the shakespeare code was knowing harry potter and that they were going the wrong way- add that to the very little in gridlock- again only did what she learned in a movie but relied on the doctor in that speech 'i have the doctor'. By episode 4 rose was telling the doctor she'd be fine on her own- for him to go with the experts. she helped harriet jones and went looking for alien tech. We'll have to see what happens next week.
I guess we had all this advertisement that martha was less in awe of the doctor and she was more of an equal and it came to nothing. It seems that after the companion last series it seems like a step backwards when surely we want to go forwards.

Now mind you, it probably won't happen, but a person can dream, right? :yay:
I was really in awe with Gridlock. So little yet so much went on there, and my little brain has been playing around with various implications ever since I saw it.

i think the special FX carried that episode a bit sort of like they did 'the end of the world' as with both the last 10 minutes were the best. Probably because other than the death of boe the last 10 minutes were the same.

...They sound like New York accents..
You live in California, right? Your probably used to that generic Hollywood accent, in the Northwest we sorta have a very weird twang type, sorta like a bastard British accent with heavy American overtone.
See Milwaukee accents.
You mean New Yorkers really do sound like that horrid little blonde? No wonder our rappers were always trying to kill each other. :oldrazz:

You know, I never got around to bringing up the preview of next week's episode...
Dear god, those American accents suck. I'm gonna have a hard time swallowing that it takes place in New York. Do our fake English accents sound that bad?
They can do ...especially with attempts at London/Cockney accents (Dick Van-Dyke and Don Cheadle have produced two of the worst efforts ever seen on film).

lol, wow. I can't believe Baker's bug-eyed stare is real, and not just something he did while playing the Doctor.
Speaking of, I just bought the Key To Time collection on DVD yesterday. Lovin' Baker. This brings my list of Doctors up to 3. :D
