View Full Version : The "New" Doctor Who

Never say never. RTD Dr. Who really has not been very successful, hence the BBC dropping it as a series and just going to specials.
Actually they are doing one year of specials then will have a full series in 2010 , the specials thing is only to facilitate David Tennants responsibilities.

It's viewing figures have been declining with each series.
Wrong actually.

no...a writer who knows what he's doing along with a head writer to plan the progression of the series is whats needed...
really if VOTD didn;t kill fandom i don;t know what will...

and primeval and torchwoods viewing figures have been genraly the same...hmm...
Torchwoods figures declined throughout the first series. They have risen slightly with the second series again. Primeval is far better than either RTD Who or Torchwood.

we were all looking forward to a nice period christmas, then a nice space age christmas but no...trd has to go and think "hmm...if the people of EARTH aren't in danger then people at home won't care about them..." which is in fact wrong since earth will never be destroyed we've lost caring so the destrution of an alien planet would actually make us care more cause it could be destroyed, the dr could loose...he won't but he could...
Torchwoods figures declined throughout the first series. They have risen slightly with the second series again. Primeval is far better than either RTD Who or Torchwood.
but not far better...just that tiny bit better than makes you think "itv did something right for once...and it doesn;t have chris tarrent..."

I like the current Doctor...he really shines when they put him in much more serious roles. I really wish they would focus more on that than trying to make him funny all the time. He can do intensity much better.

Google it, the series finale, whilst being the most watched that night was down on the previous series, which was down on the previous series!
Simple really. It also despite selling reasonably abroad, is not bought by major networks or shown at prime times.

Since everyone seems to consider McGann as the eighth doctor (including myself to some degree), I have a question.
RTD's new series of Doctor Who seems to avoid all the controversial aspects of the DW movie. And since it was an attempt for an American continuation of DW, do you think that he could actually be the official eighth doctor? The new series just doesn't seem to refer back to the movie at all...

Which part? The part where I said including myself to some degree? I say to some degree because I'm sometimes not fully convinced that McGann is the official eighth doctor because of how the stories in the new series are written (it's a bit hard for me to explain what I mean by this).

unit has been mentioned in the last few eps of the last series and currently being mentioned in torchwood, do you think they will play a mjor part in the new series? one of the reasons i think it wil be because when martha explains how she got the job at unit, in tw, she mentions she was highly recommeded, hinting that the dr has been in touch with them which suggests that there is interaction between them, but as of yet they have noot been seen, as far as im aware.

It's amazing how much Torchwood has improved this series, i've only seen 2 this season, but, both were better than all of last seasons. Don't get me wrong, I still feel it's highly flawed, however, it's better than it was. The spin off the BBC should really do is based on the time agents themselves. No homosexuality, in fact let's not have much sex, it really isn't needed, but we could have an adult Dr. Who. With the time agents trying to fill the gap left by the Timelords destruction. It could be great!
The BBC have actually (I never thought i'd say this) produced some good adult Sci Fi recently, in Jekyll and Life on Mars. Sadly with the latter, it's popularity has turned it into a cash cow and it has spawned an allegedly poor spin off. I don't actually know first hand as both episodes of Ashes to Ashes are, thus far, unwatched and on my hard drive!

I just don't understand why he feels the need to apply Jack's "revolving door" style of sexuality to everybody. He created Jack and described him as "pansexual," so that's fine for him. But how does it apply to the normal, 20th-century people with absolutely no comment? Are bisexuals literally the only people he knows in real life?

I think the groups, odd sexuality, is supposed to represent the characters detachment from reality and how Torchwood takes over their life to the extent they can't have a normal human relationship.

I think the groups, odd sexuality, is supposed to represent the characters detachment from reality and how Torchwood takes over their life to the extent they can't have a normal human relationship.

It looked like those could simply be someone's own personal costume they made on their own time. Unless they had cast members from DW hanging around the costume, it's a little too unrealistic to believe (though I wouldn't doubt the possibility of Davros coming back; he's not my favourite either).

Louise Jameson Interview - 'Dr Who'
Sunday, February 17 2008, 08:00 GMT
By Ben Rawson-Jones (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/a89443/louise-jameson-interview-dr-who.html#), Cult Editor
http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/08/07/160x120_Leela-Doctor-Who.jpg
In 1977 Louise Jameson donned a distinctly eye-opening leather outfit to star alongside Tom Baker's fourth incarnation of The Doctor, playing the savage warrior Leela. Over two seasons she flung her knife and poisoned thorns at an impressive array of monsters, such as the dreaded 'Robots of Death', giant rats, killer toy Mr Sin and the potato-headed Sontarans. She's now back reprising her role as Leela in a range of audio plays from Big Finish, so Cult Spy spoke exclusively to the legendary companion at the launch of the new online download service.
How hard did you find it stepping back into Leela's leather boots?
"I found it really, really easy and I think it's absolutely to do with her speech because she never condenses any words. She's never colloquial. Since I hit that rhythm, I was back in the saddle really."
Has Leela changed much since she last appeared on Doctor Who?
"I think the writers have acknowledged that I'm that bit older and have given her more wisdom. Also, because it's on audio she's been able to take control of the situation. She's more separated from The Doctor and much more of a driving force."
Do the audio dramas pick up where Leela was left in the television series, on the planet Gallifrey?
"They're in between stories... I've teamed up with Lalla Ward (Romana) to become her bodyguard. We get on extremely well."
Do you swap anecdotes about Tom Baker?
"When asked, Lalla always says 'he's the sweetest man I've been divorced from', which is just brilliant!"
http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/08/07/160x120_leela_faceevil.jpg
Do you hope he might be persuaded to perform in any Big Finish audio dramas one day?
"I think it would be marvellous. He was in [Doctor Who] longer than anybody. He has a very distinctive and beautiful voice, so sure. He has a huge fanbase."
What challenges do recording the audio dramas have, as opposed to the television series?
"To be able to get very concentrated, very quickly is the main thing. Especially for a long passage, a monologue. With the risk of sounding like my teachers, it's all about the preparation. If you put the homework in you can go anywhere. Knowing your motivation, your objectives."
Do you think the skimpy leather leotard you wore in the show was at all exploitative?
"In retrospect I suppose it was, but I wasn't expecting it. Now it might be very different. I was going into a big show and it was a shock - all this male attention afterwards. Like it or loathe it, it really gave my career a boost."
There's a family drama on ITV called Primeval in which the female lead stripped off to her underwear every time she was in her flat because her pet lizard needs a hot climate. Shades of Leela in terms of keeping the dads happy?
"Haha! Brilliant! At least Leela had more of an excuse to wear that costume!"
[B]Do you find it strange that K-9 is now associated with Sarah Jane Smith instead of his original owner Leela?
"I have to confess to being a little bit jealous that Liz Sladen is back, but being furious that she ended up with K-9. It's my dog! But I can see why they've done it, as [Sarah Jane] always comes up number one in all the polls - with Leela a close second!"
Did you think when K-9 first trundled on set that he would still be around decades later?
"I had no idea I would still be involved. It's been 30 years. I absolutely had no idea and I wished I'd stayed on a bit more."
http://images.digitalspy.co.uk/08/07/160x120_doctor_who_leela_catalyst.jpg
Did you have the chance to stay on longer?
"I had the chance to go back into it to do the takeover, Peter's takeover."
The Tom Baker to Peter Davison regeneration scene?
"Yes, but they wanted me back for a whole series. Me, in my arrogance, only wanted to come back for the one story."
Do you regret that?
"Yeah, I do... maybe I wouldn't have been able to do Tenko then."
[B]Did they want you back to ease the transition?
"Yes, because it's such a loyal fandom that they wanted to keep them satisfied. I just said that I didn't want to do a whole series. Shame on me."
Well, it helped you avoid being typecast as a savage warrior...
"Haha. For the rest of my career. Now there's a thought!"
Do you follow the new series much?
"I liked the recent Children In Need one [Time Crash]... I caught it almost by accident. I just loved the line 'You were my Doctor'. It's something the fans say all the time - 'You were my companion.' It's very touching."
You could say to K-9 - you were my dog!
"Yeah, you were my dog and then you buggered off!"
In the current incarnation of Doctor Who, many elements from the classic series have been brought back. Would you be keen on a return for Leela?
"I'd go back, yeah. I wish they would ask. I really would love to go back... but I'm glad that I had a hand in the foundations, as it were."
Louise Jameson is currently reprising her role as Leela in a range of spin-off Doctor Who audio dramas from Big Finish, which can be downloaded from www.bigfinish.com

well he picked up adric first just before romana II left during 'Warriors Gate'
He then went on to pick up Nyssa during The keeper of Traken (one of his very last stories)
Then Tegan came aboard (although i can't remember how)
They were all set up for the fifth doctor rather than the fourth. So by the time he regenerated he had these three at his side. It is generally considered that there were too many at one time. So to add Leela as well seems a bit mad especially for the long term.

the door is left ajar but she is off. So martha will not be the 'specials' companion. We know donna won't be so we are left with jack, sarah jane and rose or someone new of course

i know that but i can't remember which episode she was stolen in. I can't think when the doctor was at heathrow between Traken and Logopolis
He never was at Heathrow. Her car broke down on the Barnet bypass and she wandered into the TARDIS thinking it was a phone box in Logopolis part 1.

Speaking of wandering into the Tardis - did anyone see the Graham Norton show where they had set up a Tardis and then rang the phone? The unsuspecting guy got in it and was kept on the phone while a forklift truck picked it up and made the Tardis sound lol.
Very funny.

Someone new I hope. And someone useful. I wish the Doctor would hook up with an SAS person or a cop or a full-fledged doctor or something. Someone who can actually handle themselves in situations without it being totally unbelievable.

He would do what he did with Leela and negate the skills of any warrior. :( Pascifists are annoying.

Yeah, seriously. Is there any real reason why we need to see the Doctor and whichever companion is with him constantly running from everything until the Doctor suddenly has a bright idea?

Because he is a pascifist, who, has killed numerous aliens.......

Tennant's Doctor certainly didn't seem pacifistic in the Christmas special from a couple years ago with the Raknos.

Yeah, I miss Eccleston's Doctor a lot lately. It doesn't help that his companions usually suck, too.

I believe the Doctor said it best himself in "The Christmas Invasion":
"No second chances. I'm that sort of a man."

And yet, he constantly gives people second chances. Including the Master and the Daleks.

The Master I can understand since they were the last two Timelords. I don't remember the Doctor giving the Daleks another chance, unless you're talking about when they were in Manhattan and the new species of humans/Daleks/Timelords was involved.

It's in Manhattan after the hybrid is dead. He offers a second chance to the remaining Dalek.

Well it is the last Dalek. The Doctor may be heartless at times but he's not going to wipe out an entire species like he did during the Time War.

Well it is the last Dalek. The Doctor may be heartless at times but he's not going to wipe out an entire species like he did during the Time War.He attempted to wipe out the whole Dalek species the last time they appeared in the original series, and also wiped out at least one other entire species in the mid 80s (the Vervoids). There is something a little skewed about the latest Doctor's personality. He seems to talk a lot about how powerful he is, then back off from doing anything much.

If there's one thing I do not like about the new Doctor's it's this "talking tough" the writers sometimes have them do, going off into a 'don't mess with me cos' I'm so bad@ss' routine.
Talk about idle threats, when most of the time all the Doctor has on him is a glorified screwdriver.

A glorified screwdriver, and words. Don't forget those. After all, he did bring down all Harriet Jones with only 6 words.
