here's what should have happened. :p

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I watched it. I thought to myself, surely if the planet moved at such a speed the people on the ground felt it, then won't there be tidal waves and earthquakes and mass destruction like nothing before!?

Ms. Sladen is pretty damn spry for her age. You don't expect to see a 60 year old woman leap to her feet and run across the room, but she did exactly that in "Stolen Earth."

I want to see the return of The Professor. If there is any Gallifreyan who would have managed to get through the Time Way unnoticed, then it's him.
I want to see more alien planets- not just as a backdrop for the plot to unfold before, but to be explored with a sense of wonder and adventure. I want to see an alien jungle, and for The Doctor and companion(s) to become prey to the local wildlife, before meeting the natives and solving all their troubles.
A continuous background narrative would be great, as well. Either the hunt for surviving Time Lords, or the need to repair rifts- caused by Caan's interference- on different worlds, would work well.
Finally, a companion who isn't a newbie to adventure, and who has an already developed (though possibly skewed) moral compass. The Unicorn would obviously be my choice, but you could have a Victorian street urchin or one of Robin Hood's Merry Men, if desired.

You know...it's true...we need to move away from Earth...MORE.
More Alien planets, much more fun and randomness....I guess we'll see what Moffat plans (reasonably) soon....I doubt he would have taken it on without a good sense of where he wants to go with it :)

Yeah. They pretty much will. Moffat has written the best reviewed episodes of the series and if he keeps a similar feel with his own personal touches, the show will continue to do as well. He can't just come in and completely rehash the feel of the show to the point it's disjointed.

Do critics really matter that much in the UK? 'Cause over here, they pretty much always praise the shows that wind up getting canceled after one or two seasons and often disparage the ones that find mass public appeal.
regwec
07-10-2008, 06:45 PM
Yes and no. Critics probably don't effect the viewing figures for programmes that much, but they do effect the public acceptability of liking them. Doctor Who is currently managing an awkward balance of being slightly geeky but slightly cool. The wheels can't be allowed to fall off that.
TheCorpulent1
07-10-2008, 06:50 PM
But presumably if the ratings are still high, the BBC will continue to fund it, right? It's viewership that makes them money, not critical praise?

Britain likes to do that, more than just the critics, the British resounding easily led, despite what we think....the more successful something gets...eventually there will be an anti-movement.
But presumably if the ratings are still high, the BBC will continue to fund it, right? It's viewership that makes them money, not critical praise?
And that's what worries me with Dr Who. Yes, the BBC will fund it...but to a deathly end with no originality and bled dry of fun.
Hopefully this big gap will only endevour to get it a fresh breathe of air...and even the possiblity of a new audience/time to work on stronger scripts and so on.
It's a beautiful thing, it should do well & I hope it does.

Howdy all,
I for one am looking forward to Moffat's stint on Doctor Who, I liked the episodes that he wrote much more than the ones that RTD wrote. Don't get me wrong I still liked the epiisodes that RTD did for the most part, but I can't wait to see Moffat put his signature on this show. I give credit where credit is due, RTD was able to breath life back into DW and get it going and make it enjoyable again.

I have a feeling Moffat's season finales will have less explosions and not so overblown without a giant CGI army.

Although saying that, as much as I hate RTD's finales, he does have to write 5-6 episodes a season, as well as run the whole show from a producer and showrunner standpoint. Moffat usually only writes 1-2 episodes, so he has plenty of time to polish and properly think out the whole script. It will be interesting to see how his writing is affected by the pressures of running the whole ship.

Well, he doesn't have to write many shows, to be honest. I'm sure he could divvy up his episodes among the other writers and they'd do fine with them. RTD probably just likes to write premiere and finale episodes because he's a big Doctor Who fan and it allows him to personally control the direction of each series a bit more.

As "Dark" as Moffat's episodes were I think he will take the whole series that direction. Which if he does that may give it a closer feel to the original and get it away from the Doctor trying to shag his assistants. That was nice that there was none of that this season, at least not with Donna. Of course then they just had to bring Rose back didn't they.

The finale villains should be the Time Lords. On the advent of their reformation, their high council should proclaim a Time-Crusade to prevent anything like the Time War ever happening again. The Doctor should have to stall their purges, firstly through sabotage but finally through rhetoric.

It was never mentioned as far as I'm aware.
At the moment, I don't really mind the lack of Gallifrey. I think it works well for The Doctor, being as he has pretty nothing left, yet keeps fighting.
Although, having said that, it is annoying that we can't run into Romana and stuff now, and the Doctor constantly saying "I'M THE ONLY ONE LEFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
yeh...but at that point torchwood was just the code for transporting dr who masters...
i'm sure that when people say things like "oh russel takes these things that happend ages ago and masterfully crafts them into something thats needed and important in this series" they're really thinking that he just sticks pins in random epsiodes and picsk crap from them to bring forward...cause thats what i think anyhow...

The kiss is the part that really needs to go, though. The scene would've been so much better if they'd just let the hybrid Doctor stay with Rose and left what they'd do to the viewer's imagination instead of beating us over the head with the fact that they're gonna be boning like rabbits.

When the tardis was burning and Donna reached out to the spare hand I noticed her ring and the moment she began to affect and the new body formed it I thought she was passing the Master's energy onto it. I expected him to become the Doctor's saviour and then it'd give John Simm another chance to return in the future etc.
Obviously the ring turned out to be a different one from the one with the Master's essence/energy, but for a brief second I expected that story to wrap up as well.

Clearly a different ring, but I expected it to have some significance. It's a pretty damn big ring, and they kept showing Tate's hand. Even after the Doctor wiped her memory and she was asleep in bed, you can see that big ass ring on her hand.

Well some of them they could recast like they did with William Hartnell in the Five Doctors or do like in Time Warp with Peter Davison and say they look old because of time stuffy. lol. Hey is Colin Baker still around? (don't want him there just curious :D)
mcgann's performance is indeed awesome...as is his tardis...so freaking cool...

Kind of funny with The Doctor that in his first incarnation he's like a grandfather and lived for a long time yet, with his others he doesn't really last long except Tom Baker who had a long run. lol

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I think when it gets to the 13th Doctor, they will say the 13 regenerations was a limit which was imposed by the Timelords themselves and with them gone no more limit and it could also be used as an explanation of how they allowed the Master to have a new cycle.

well, we know that time lords only last to thirteen and from the master we also know that you can stop your self from regenerating so maybe its a matter of wanting to regenerate that counts. Maybe, the Doctor could regenerate past 13 because he wants to.

if a race of beings has the ability to regenerate then it would stand to reason that there would be no natural limit to how often they can do that...
thus logically the 13 was imposed by the timelords and can thusly be forgotten about...i think...

I'd love to see Tom Baker back as much as the next guy, but as LITG have been wrong plenty of times before, I'll take the rumor of his participation with a grain of salt until I actually see set pictures or a BBC press release or, you know, the series he's said to appear in is less than two whole years away.
Meanwhile, I'll be watching the old fourth Doctor serials on Netflix. I could kiss whoever invented the Watch Instantly feature. :D

He looks different enough from how he did as the Doctor that he could easily just play some random other role. Or I could be down with him playing the Master. Maybe the Master got a regeneration cycle like Romana's, where he could choose his new form, and decided to make himself look like one of the Doctor's incarnations, only that was a long time ago and now the body is looking rather worse for wear.
