I guess I should clarify Spectre's post, since everyone here might not be familiar with Lying in the Gutters. LITG is a rumor column. Just because they say something, doesn't mean it's written in stone. I'd love to see Tom Baker back as much as the next guy, but as LITG have been wrong plenty of times before, I'll take the rumor of his participation with a grain of salt until I actually see set pictures or a BBC press release or, you know, the series he's said to appear in is less than two whole years away.
Meanwhile, I'll be watching the old fourth Doctor serials on Netflix. I could kiss whoever invented the Watch Instantly feature. :D
Yes, and the columnist classifies it as such, but that's why he uses the light feature. If he thought it was anything but a sure thing, it would have had a yellow or red light, and like you said, probably turned out wrong. However, I've been reading the article for quite some time, and almost all of his green lights that I've followed have turned out right, and he really seems to have been on a role in Dr. Who news as of late, so I'm perfectly inclined to say that this is happening.

If a race of beings has the ability to regenerate then it would stand to reason that there would be no natural limit to how often they can do that, thus logically the 13 was imposed by the timelords and can thusly be forgotten about...i think...
The bit in bold was basically what I was saying, except I was saying it will probably be used to give The Doctor more than 13 Regenerations by saying that without the Timelords that limit is no longer imposed, so he could go on forever if he wanted to,

Whether he's playing the Doctor as everyone wants, the Master as he himself suggested, or something else... we'll have to wait and see.

I'm pretty sick of the Daleks. Every time they show up they're so pathetic that I'm left wondering how the Time Lords had any problem against them in the Time War. The only really good episodes with them, as far as I'm concerned, were the series one ep where they first reappeared and the crossover with the Cybermen in the series two finale.

07-17-2008, 11:13 AM
Well the end of that was even as boring as the rest....... through all of Evolution of the Daleks I kept wondering how much longer.

I agree. I know everyone considers them the ultimate Doctor Who bad guys, but come on, give 'em a rest for a series. There are so many other villains that could use a redesign and a reintroduction. The Ice Warriors would be nice, for one. Those assassin things from "The Five Doctors" would be cool, too. So many others.

The Dalek 2-parter was the episode that finally made me hate the Daleks, and "42" was the only episode where I really really didn't like Martha. The scene where she was in the escape pod and about to fly into the sun made me say "for god's sake, just DIE!"
And I'm one of this thread's few Martha fans, I think.

She was good in the premier. She was pretty good in the Shakespeare episode, and the writers did a good job with her in the Lazarus episode. She was also pretty good in the finale. It's kinda strange that between Martha, Rose, and Donna, Martha was the only one who wasn't a deus ex machina. Rose became the Bad Wolf, Donna was the DoctorDonna, and Martha... helped turn the Doctor back to normal so the Doctor could save the day.

Well, Martha became a bit of a legend herself, and she kicked off the deus ex machina that restored the Doctor. So she was kind on the edge of becoming one. I'm glad she didn't, though.

Il iked Voyage on the Damned it a bit but it wasn't up there with Christmas Invasion was still good though and I liked the romance between Kylie and the Doctor they seemed more suited, both were travellers and had no families.

Well for one, I actually quite liked the Sontarans portrayal. Atleast they were a threat, unlike the wimpy Cult of Skaro. Again, I liked the way UNIT were presented (aside from those two idiot guards who discoverd the tank) and any episode with Bernard Cribbins raises it up several notches. I'll admit though, that Martha was not introduced well, and that Rattigan kid should be found and beaten. Overall, I liked the episodes, but I can see why you might have a few problems with it.

I didn't like the way that the Sontaran's were done. A race that essentially lives for war shouldn't be sneaking around, being very quiet about everything. Surely, they would have gone to Earth, blown everything up and then set up the gas thingies. And how the hell didn't people see the giant spaceship?!
Granted, UNIT were done well in the episode, however I don't see what all the fuss is about with a certain member of UNIT in that episode....(If you visit to the OG, you may understand)
Bernie Cribbins, I agree. He was amazing in the episode, as he was with the rest of the series.
Rattigan annoyed the hell out of me, so much so that I actually went "YAY!!!!!!!!!:woot:" when he blew himself up.
And, the resolution. Burning the entire Earth's atmosphere. Yes, I know, it's Doctor Who, very little of it makes sense...But, the Fanastic Four taught us that was bad. Yet, miraculously, the skyline of New York is perfectly intact, despite the fact that most of the buildings would have been torched...

Too much thought into an episode. I don't put any thought into anything Doctor Who. I just sit back and let it be a fun 30 minute/1 hour ride. Otherwise you could pick apart and find a flaw in anything ever done on this show in it's long history.

You're upset that a race who live for war decided to use covert tactics, which are, in fact, an element of all modern war tactics? Granted, I don't know what the Sontarans were like before, but if all they did was engage in open warfare and bumble around shooting things, I would think it'd be good to see them up their game a bit.
The bit about the sky burning was pretty stupid, though. But then again, the deus ex machina is a cornerstone of Doctor Who and all sci fi television in general, so you've gotta expect that sort of thing.

No, sorry, a science fiction show is a niche genre. It's not everyone's cup of tea, where as a show like Friends sadly has more of a market to everyone.
And 1.5 for the series is still a steep price point. That's 1.5 million they could put towards specials effects. I mean Tennant's a popular Doctor and all, but isn't the point of this series that it can continue with a new fresh face in the role? Why pay so much money to keep someone when you can get a new fresh face and still keep the show on the air?
TheCorpulent1

I don't really know what actors get paid in England, but $1.5 million for 13 episodes is about $116,000 per episode, which is a pretty good paycheck for a major US TV star but not outlandishly huge or anything.

Doctor Who is huge over here, hence the Saturday night 6/7pm time slot that it has. If it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, it'd be put on Monday night at 8pm.
Tennant was voted the most popular Doctor recently, so it would make sense that the Beeb wants to keep him for as long as possible. Yes, the show does mean that the actors can change, but since The Doctor only has a few regenerations left. Granted, they'll do some magical hocus pocus to stop that from happening, but they won't want to constant change the actor every series to get there straight away.

Yes, Sci-Fi is, but Doctor Who breaks those boundries. When the series is on TV, it's in all the newspapers, the TV guides, occasionally even in the news. Merchandise is all over the place as well. To be fair, it's family show.

it's not just sci fi...one week it can be a historical drama another it can be whizzing about running from some reanimated coprse...

I'd still classify it as science fiction no matter what they are running from/trying to defeat this week. I think the reason being is because the primary character is an alien being.

Generally, yes. But remember, Lost and Heroes are also technically sci fi shows and look at the sort of ratings those monsters pulled in. Viewership has fluctuated, but both of those shows transcend the usual genre limitations and garner tons more viewers than most other sci fi shows. There are some exceptions to the niche sci fi rule, and Doctor Who appears to be one of them (I can't say for certain, since I don't live in the UK).

And the advert is annoying. It's too long, and you can't help but laugh at Westwood when he's pretty much going "I'm amazing!!! I rock!!! WORSHIP ME!!!!!!!!". I mean, come on, how old is the man? 40? 50? He just screams mid-life crisis...

I don't really know what actors get paid in England, but $1.5 million for 13 episodes is about $116,000 per episode, which is a pretty good paycheck for a major US TV star but not outlandishly huge or anything.
No it's £1.5 million (Pound) not $1.5 million a series, so that would mean he would be getting around $3 million a series....

Steven Moffat to Steven Spielberg: Do Not Want
http://i36.tinypic.com/ejhrtk.jpg (http://es.tinypic.com/)
The new man in charge of Doctor Who turned down a £500,000 movie deal with Steven Spielberg so he could take the job.
Bafta-winning scriptwriter Steven Moffat has quit a two-picture deal with the director and Lord Of The Rings film-maker Peter Jackson to fulfil a 'childhood dream' of working on the BBC sci-fi drama.
Moffat, who created hit BBC comedy series Coupling, had signed a £1million contract to write the first two scripts for Tintin, a £150million Spielberg trilogy based on the comic-strip hero.
But instead the Scottish writer will take over as the creative force of Doctor Who after Welsh writer Russell T. Davies, who revived the series in 2005, decided to step down.
While some Hollywood movie executives are baffled by Moffat's decision, he was given a sympathetic hearing by Spielberg, who is a fan of the long-running drama currently starring David Tennant.
Moffat said: 'I know a lot of people won't understand it but I've been dreaming about writing for Doctor Who since I was seven.
'There are no bad feelings between Spielberg and me, but Doctor Who has to come before Hollywood.
'The show has enjoyed a renaissance. I am working on scripts to be filmed next year. Russell T. Davies is doing four specials next and then my shows will begin. The show is all-consuming.'
One Hollywood insider said: 'No one walks away from Spielberg and all that money for a show no one has heard of. I mean, what is this doctor show about? It sounds a little silly.'
In fact, the programme has an estimated global audience of 250million thanks to overseas sales.
Among the best-received episodes this year was a two-parter written by Moffat and featuring Alex Kingston in a guest star role.
Moffat told The Mail on Sunday: 'I was under contract to do the first two of the three Tintin films. I completed the first one and then the Hollywood writers' strike happened and I couldn't work.
'I was offered the Doctor Who job and accepted immediately. I hope you won't make what happened sound too dramatic.
'I talked to Steven and he understood completely.
'I could not work on the second Tintin film and work on Doctor Who. So I chose Doctor Who.
'Steven is a fan and he understood my passion for the series completely.'
Asked to confirm that he had walked away from £500,000, he said: 'I honestly couldn't tell you the financial implications. That is all handled by my agent. I know I've made a good decision.'
Some experts estimate his pay packet for Doctor Who could be 'not more than £150,000' a year.
Tintin, about a boy reporter, his faithful dog Snowy and their friend Captain Haddock, is Spielberg's pet project. He is due to start filming in September, sharing directing duties with Peter Jackson.
You go Moffat

It's a shame Moffat couldn't do Tintin, but I'm glad he's got such enthusiasm for Doctor Who.
That quote from a "Hollywood insider" reeks of douchebagginess, though. Seriously, a show no one's heard of? Despite the fact that it's practically a British institution and it's been popularized for many, many people here in America by PBS for decades? Bleh.

Ha, yeah, I could see that. I've only had a lot of exposure to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, and 10th, but I can see what you mean as it pertains to those. Troughton's totally the weird but lovable uncle, Pertwee's the super-cool uncle who shows up to every family gathering with a new woman who's half his age, and Hartnell is the crotchety old grandfather who just wants those damn kids off his lawn.
Lord Valumart
07-21-2008, 01:55 PM
yeh, thats the sort of thing
hartnell's the grandfather who'll force you to gotothe bank with him to get his money uot even though he hates you
troughtan's the uncle who's going a bit mental but is tonnes of fun
pertwee's the uncle who'll say no in public but when everyone's backis turned will pass you his can of beer
t. baker is the uncle that isn;t really an uncle and leaves knifes out when he knows the kids are coming round
davison is the older brother who trys to help you out all the time but only ever makes things worse
c. baker is the annoying younger brother who demands stuff then forgets why he demanded the stuff in thefirst place and makes some back joke
mccoy is the strange twin who's always ploting to annoy the other twin but never really goes through with it
i guess mcgann would be the unfomfortably older brother, by like 10 years difference who's a hit with all the women for a reason no one understands...

How about the current series' Doctors? The 9th and 10th both strike me as brothers. Eccleston is like the older brother who's goofy most of the time but will still kick his little brother when his back is turned. Tennant is like the super-ADD, hyperactive kid brother who's fascinated by everything.

It makes sense, though. Probably the only companion he might've been able to have feelings for is Romana, but I don't think anything happened there. And now she's dead and stuff.
Madame de Pompadour was cool, hot and part of a mystery at the time. Plus she could reverse the Vulcan Mind Meld, it's always handy to have someone that can do that with you.

But Madame de Pompadour was a weird mystory, she had robots from the future going after her for no reason. He'd have taken her on one trip and droped her off coz she wasn't all that.

With the track record of prominent Time Lords so far. I'd say ''dead" in quotation marks, Corp. The Master came back, probably will come back again. Jenny was introduced, died, came back. Hints by Davies The Rani might be out there with the Master's Ring.
I wonder if Susan's still out there.
JustABill

Was Susan's parents ever shown? I know from the little I know of her time with the Doctor, it was always very vague if she was even really his ''granddaughter" or a ''Time Lord" for that matter.
TheCorpulent1
07-22-2008, 10:56 AM
Well, she was about as knowledgeable as a Time Lord, since she knew science and history well beyond the standard for Earth in 1963. Granted, that could easily just be due to the Doctor raising her even if she's not physically a Time Lord. I don't think we ever learned much about her parentage, although the Doctor confirmed to Donna in the last series that he'd been a father. So the implication is naturally that Susan was indeed his biological granddaughter.
Then again, weren't all Time Lords supposed to be sterile? I thought that's what the Loom was for--procreation through cloning.

I wouldn't mind Susan not being his true biological grand-daughter. I would prefer her to be just someone the Doctor raised as his own grand-daughter, but then that probably wouldn't make some fans happy.
But what if Jenny turns out by some weird timey-wimey stuff to be Susan's mother? o_O

Yeah, I don't think that's true. Of course, a lot of things seem to be different after the Time War, so maybe the Doctor's magic Time-Lord-sense no longer tingles properly...
On a completely separate note, I just had a random thought: The Doctor's been traveling through time with human companions for over 40 years now, right? Wouldn't it be cool if one of his new companions were actually the child of one of his old companions? Say Ben and Polly wound up getting married after leaving the Doctor and had a kid, and that kid grew up hearing tales of the Doctor their whole life, and then they actually meet the Doctor in the present and become a companion. That could be kind of cool, especially with the Tenth Doctor's love of so much stuff having to do with his past adventures.

I wonder if McGann physically fought anyone in the Time War.
But, really, it'd be cool if the Doctor had to resort to physical violence at some point. Like, he comes up against some alien that's even smarter than he is but physically weak, so he realizes the most effective way of dealing with it is to simply punch it in the face. That'd be funny.

As much as I would love Rose to have a happy ending. The idea of the Doctor splitting in two and one being human sounds utterly retarded as does the idea that Rose would settle for a Doctor clone.
Yep, it was an utterly retarded idea. Growing a new doctor from a hand was stupid. Us sci-fi nerds can even come up with adequate pseudo science to explain it away...
I think that the Donna is The Master theories are ridiculous.
But could it be possible that she's The Rani?
That is exactly what i was hoping, Admitedly you would have expected her to have a few evil sociopathic moments through out the season (even if she was in human form with no memory of being the Rani) BUt the Rani could have saved the day in much the way Donna did (but in a far less annoying way)
I have grown to like Tennant a great deal, and I don't want to lose him at this stage. He was gunned down by a Dalek's energy beam, however, and his regeneration had begun. It would cheapen both those elements of the mythology if they were reversed or betrayed, unless the reasons were absolutely compelling.
You're right, it cheapened it. I mean, remember what the p.davidson to C.Baker regeneration was like. Now it just seems the doctor can regenerate whenever he likes, or heal himself whenever he likes, he needs to be at least alittle vulnerable.

And he'll look the exact same in the year 3,000,000,000 (When the Doctor and Rose first meet Boe).
So... he rapidly changes into the Face of Boe, then stays that way for billions of years on end?
