Im back! Been away a few days, but I have returned...
On a doctor who related note:
I went out to buy the caves of androzani the other day..and no where sells it! looked in HMV and Virgin. Saw it in MVC, but it was £20, which I wasnt really prepared to give (Forbidden Planet are selling other Dr who DVD's at £9!)
So in the end i gave up looking, and bought Pyramids of Mars for 9, and lived happily ever after.

Hey guys, don't suppose any of you would know where I could find the trailer for The Christmas Invasion and also the teasers for Season 2 in a downloadable .mov file? Thanks in advance. I've seen it at the BBC site but Realplayer is very jumpy for me.

I was hoping we may get The Chrismas Invasion here in Australia for Christmas Eve but it was a no show, big dissappointment as the ABC has been quite up-to date with the new Who (Season 1). I may have to do something dodgy and download it from a bittorrent which I don't want to do but I feel the DVD maybe some time away.

David Tennent looks great as The Doctor ...can't wait to see him in action.

The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards

"Starfall - a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come - for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint - scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer, bandit... Will the TARDIS ever work again? Is Glint's lost treasure waiting to be found? And does the fabled Resurrection Casket - the key to eternal life - really exist? With the help of new friends, and to the horror of new enemies, the Doctor and Rose aim to find out... "

Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole

"When a naval cruiser sinks in mysterious circumstances in the North Sea, all aboard are lost. Rose is saddened to learn that the brother of her friend, Keisha, was among the dead. And yet he appears to them as a ghostly apparition, begging to be saved from the coming feast...the feast of the drowned. As the dead crew haunt loved ones all over London, the Doctor and Rose are drawn into a chilling mystery. What sank the ship, and why? When the cruiser's wreckage was towed up the Thames, what sinister force came with it? The river's dark waters are hiding an even darker secret, as preparations for the feast near their conclusion..."

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5774/untitled7lr.png (http://imageshack.us)

Sorry, I could only find this teensy cover for this book.:(

The Stone Rose by Jacueline Rayner

"Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in a museum - a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realizes that this means the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose soon have more on their minds than sculpture. While the Doctor searches for a missing boy, Rose befriends a girl who claims to know the future. But then, the Doctor stumbles on the hideous truth behind the statue of Rose - and Rose herself learns that you have to be very careful what you wish for..."

I Am A Dalek by Gareth Roberts

Equipped with space suits, golf clubs and a flag, the Doctor and Rose are planning to live it up, Apollo mission-style, on the Moon. But the TARDIS has other plans, landing them instead in a village on the south coast of England; a picture-postcard sort of place where nothing much happens. Until now... An archaeological dig has turned up a Roman mosaic, circa AD 70, depicting mythical scenes, grapes - and a Dalek. A few days later a young woman, rushing for work, is knocked over and killed by a bus, then comes back to life. It's not long before all hell breaks loose, and the Doctor and Rose must use all their courage and cunning against an alien enemy - and a not-quite-alien accomplice - who are intent on destroying humanity.

That sounds like so much fun!!:D Except the spacesuits...:(

Gotta say i'm not liking Tennant with the shorter hair, in the Feast of the Drowned cover.:( Still a stunner though.

Her show annoys me so much. It's like an exhibition of messed up people with ridiculous problems. Although if anyone can comment from life experience it's Trisha. I read that her first husband left her after a few months, she later found out he was gay after he died from Aids. Her sister who had schizophrenia covered herself in petrol and killed herself, her baby daughter then developed a life-threatening disease. If that wasnt enough her husband was carrying on an affair at the same time! She suffered a nervous breakdown and ended up in a psychiatric hospital for a month!

... wow!

damn this alt. universe stuff.....

"The Daleks do appear at the end of Doomsday though neither fighting with or against the Cybermen. (In fact, that story is basically finished by the time they turn up.) These Daleks are from the alt-universe where it turns out the Time War isn't over yet. It turns out the Doctor in that universe is dead so the Daleks have come to get ours in order to use him to get through Gallifrey's Transduction Barrier. The cliffhanger ending involves a fleet of War TARDISs bearing down on the Dalek mothership which has the Doctor, Rose and Mickey onboard it. To be concluded in the 2006 Christmas Special...It's quite possible that I've made this all up."

time i can deal with...but alt universes....

My relations will be a litmus test for me to see if typical Americans will "get" this show. They aren't familiar with Doctor Who so it will be interesting to see what they think of it.

I know my sister and brother in law don't have a clue as to what ' beans on toast" are and they will most certainly not get Rose's reference to " chips " in ' End Of The World " They'll be thinking crisps instead of fries.

I wonder if they'll even be able to understand Chris Eccelston's accent? They have trouble understanding mine and I have subtle Liverpudlian accent.

I think it may be a bad move by Sci-Fi channel to air Who in the same time slot that Battlestar Galactica used since the shows are so different. Fans expecting serious tense drama may be put off by the more whimsical Who. Again I hope not because I really want Americans to embrace this show.

I didn't like the first series but with David Tennant as the new Doc, I'm gonna give the new series a chance.

Now I'll admit I was never a fan of the original shows, I only saw odd episodes when my dad had it on but to me, the new series felt like a poor imitation. I think it could have been really good if it had been done as more of a serious sci-fi show, what with todays budget and everything.. They did deal with some interesting sci-fi based ideas but the execution was just off imo, too campy/cheesy (the bin burping? :o).. it was like a comedy with sci-fi elements rather than a sci-fi show... I didn't really like Christopher Ecclestone as the Doctor (he wasn't really bad or anything, just I didn't like his portrayal) and I don't think the Daleks were done as good as what they could have been either..

They did do some alright stuff though, that time travel loop thing with her dad and going to the end of the universe...

I like what has been done with the Doctor's character. I'm old enough to remeber the old show pretty well. I can say that the way the Doctor is written now is no different than he was then. Every actor plays the Doctor character different. And the Doctor character is written to suit the man playing him. But the new series has given him a darker under current. As he is the last survivor of his race. Before the dark thread the Doctor had was that he was a fugitive, then just a rebellious time lord.

Yeah I know that it's aimed for people of varying ages but I just think it could have tunred out much better if it had been done as more of a serious sci-fi show ala Stargate, which even manages to add humour now and again without it been campy and cheesy humour. I mean the original was more aimed at the older audience, even though I suspect quite a lot of children watched it...

Like I say, it's alright and I'll give the second series a chance but IMO they wasted a chance to make a great sci-fi show

Well, it's all a matter of taste and personally I watch Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis and I find them boring, repetative, and formulaic. I stick around hoping the shows will get better, but so far nothing innovative has come out of either show.I really struggle to find something interesting to say about them. I love science fiction in all it's forms, but these two just seem so dull and result in nothing more than a convenient time filler for me. The technobabble that litters both series takes higher priority over character development. What little comedy made available by characters Colonel Jonathan Jack O'Neill and now Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell is forced in order to give some light relief to the proceedings. The characters come off as a little wooden because their lines are so stilted. As far as comedy goes I haven't laughed out loud once to anything said in Stargate and it's sister show. As for Doctor Who's humour I think it has heart and soul and at least it isn't trying to be pretentious for the psuedo intellectuals who like their science fiction deadly text book serious. I've read some pretty negative stuff about Doctor Who by Americans on the Sci-Fi forums and Ain't It Cool Chat Back and it was quite obvious this was going to happen. The cultural divide between Brits and Yanks is getting wider ever since September 11th. Americans are showing increasing signs of disinterest in the rest of the world and wanting to withdraw into themselves and shut out and distain other cultures. For the minority of Americans who really " get " the show I take my hat off to you.

I think the problem is that in America, most Sci-Fi shows are based on characters that work within an known group or organisation (Army, F.B.I, Starfleet). In the UK, it's normally a group of individuals by themselves or working against an establishment (Dr.Who, Blakes 7, The Prisoner).

Believe me, that's a very good thing indeed.:) Joking aside...

Doctor Who certainly has a cult following in America ever since the PBS stations picked up and ran the original show back in the 80's. Doctor Who conventions across America have grown in numbers each year and it's these fans that usually give the show a lot of positive praise.

If general audiences not familiar with "Who" like the new show then that's absolutely fantastic, but I do realise it's not going to be to everyones taste and that's all fair and good; but a lot of the citicisms thrown at the old and new Who are a little unfair and it's these rediculous statements I take issue with when I read them on various forums.

The way I see it is this and this applies to any TV show... give it a chance, watch more than a few episodes so you can get a feel for the material. Don't compare the pros and cons of it to any other show, judge it on it's own merits. If the language or cultural references are a problem stick with it because with time one starts to become familiar with their meanings. ( Brits have been watching American TV shows for over 50 years and we don't have a problem understanding what yanks say ) It's that simple.

Anyway my soap box outburst has come to an end and I take my hat off to you, Eklypze for embracing the new Doctor Who.:)

That's a very interesting angle you brought up there and one I didn't realise till you pointed it out. I know with comedy shows in general ( there are exceptions to the rule ) Americans tend to enjoy them more if their characters are relatively handsome or pretty and successful. Whereas Brits prefer their comical characters to be underdogs, losers, working class heroes and somewhat ugly. If you extend this trend and apply it to science fiction shows then it kind of makes sense that Americans would prefer a more structured working arrangement as opposed to something that is a little more anarchic.

Not true, Chris only wanted to do one series and didn't want the public to know until the regeneration. The BBC after showing the 1st epidose messed up and said Chris was leaving. Chris was mad at the BBC for announcing to the media about him leaving, and he didn't do any appearances or promotions for the show after the announment

if timelords can only regenerate 12 times, will the entire Doctor Who series end after the 12 death, or will they change it because he's half human (or has that been retconned?)

I really wouldn't rely on anything from the old show carrying over. Russel Davies might use the old bit about a time lords regeneration limit and he might not.

Well, there's been nothing to suggest that the show is in any way a reboot of the franchise. In fact, in the entire "first" series there's been no blatant contradiction of anything in the old show. Well, not that I've seen.

Having said that, it's not like the original show didn't play fast and loose with continuity.

lars573
03-26-2006, 09:58 AM
Yeah, granted I was only a little kid when it was on. But I do know that Russel already revamped the Daleks (turning at the waist and floating was all his idea). And from what I've understood of the 12 regen limit is that it was imposed as a rule by the time lords as a body. So no time lords, no regen limit.

I really wouldn't rely on anything from the old show carrying over. Russel Davies might use the old bit about a time lords regeneration limit and he might not.

From what I've seen of the show so far and what I know will happen in the second series... I think Russell will more likely stick with the shows established continuity and when a problem presents itself he'll work around it without messing up what has already been established.

It's certainly not a reboot or a reimagining.

The Autons and the Nestene Consciousness / Daleks / Cybermen are all old enemies of the Doctor.

During the Eccelston series there were nods to previous encounters from his past like UNIT.

K9 and an earlier assistant Sarah meet up with the 10th Doctor this April so again continuity is being followed.

Whovians have all gone on record acknowledging the fact that Russell T Davies has managed so far not to contradict earlier shows, audio adventures or books.

Couple this with the fact that Russell prefers to throw in sound effects from the early Doctor Who shows and films and you start to piece a picture of a person who embraces everything that "Who" was and can still be.

Why did Christopher Eccleston leave the show?

What this guy said....

mr eccelston was only given a one year contract ther was also apparently a breach of contract regading a news release of his dparture

His departure was meant to be a surprise, but the BBC messed up and released the information after the first episode was aired. This irked Eccelston who then later refused to do any publicity for the show and washed his hands of the whole matter.

Some newpaper reports stated that the actor was unhappy with the work scheduel and was exhausted, some said he didn't want to be typecast in the role, but others have said that there was a disagreement over money and artistic imput. Whatever the real reason for Chris leaving we'll never know for sure.

As for the big plan we can only speculate...perhaps Chris agreed only to do the first series and bow out gracefully or the producers forced him out since they couldn't come to an agreement in negotiations. One thing is for certain... Doctor Who had been away from our screens for many years and there was a generation of kids who were not familiar with everything Doctor Who so a regeneration in the first year would be a good way to introduce them to what happens in the world of " Who " when a timelord gets fatally injured. I'm sure this tactic will also help Americans grasp the concept without having to ask dumb questions like..." Is this the same Doctor? "

i've become totally obsessed with this show on sci fi. christopher eccleston cracks.me.up. he's so quirky and punchy... his smile when he was looking up at the "gaseous souls" in the last episode was HILARIOUS. i think he's done a great job of modernizing the doctor... but also keeping the character true to its roots.

I like this idea

"Extra adventure for mobiles and broadband.

There's an extra treat lined up for viewers of Doctor Who this year. In addition to the 13 brand new TV episodes due to hit screens next month, viewers will be able to download 13 60-second mini episodes (or TARDISODES) either to their mobile phones or via broadband.

Created by the team behind the BAFTA Cymru-nominated Attack of the Graske adventure, the TARDISODES will be additions to the main storyline, featuring back-stories about the characters and adventures coming up in the next episode.

Each one will be available to watch on Saturday nights after the previous week's episode goes out - and the BBC's Doctor Who website is the place to come to get your weekly fix.

You'll be able to subscribe to the TARDISODES from the April 1 by texting TARDIS to 81010."

Hope it's on Podcast.

NEW EARTH Episode 1 Review...

From Student Life Website

Press launch: Spoiler-lite review of New Earth

Doctor Who is a hit. Not just a tap on the shoulder, or a friendly punch. You might think even that a left-hook from Mike Tyson was a big hit, but that's peanuts compared to the sheer greatness of the hit that the return of the Doctor to our screens in 2006 proved to be.

One sign of Doctor Who's success was that the launch for series two wasn't just ten journalists and a sausage roll. No, a whole crowd of reporters and journalists turned up, eager to cover the event. There's plenty I could say about the press launch, but I'll cut to the chase: is the second series as good?

Hopefully this review will give you a clue to the answer and whet your appetite, but if you don't want to know anything whatsoever about New Earth then stop reading now!

It's time to head back out into time and space.... The Doctor and Rose set off further than they've ever been before, to New Earth in the distant future. This is a world where the grass smells of apples, and where humanity's descendants have made their home. But who has called the Doctor to this place, and who is it that's watching the Doctor and Rose? Faces familiar and strange await them in 5 billion and 25...

Russell T Davies once again captures the sheer joy of the Doctor's travels. From the opening moments, it's clear that the Doctor and Rose love travelling the universe and also each other. Just platonically? Well, the more squeamish fans can keep telling themselves that, but decide for yourself!

There is plenty of humour, even outright comedy. While some of the humour in the last series was at times a bit forced - farting aliens and the like - here the laughs emerge from the characters of the Doctor and Rose. The season opener leaves us assured that these are the Doctor and companion we know and love from last year.

But a dark secret lies at the heart of events, one that raises complex moral questions, and some of the themes echo last season's The End of the World. But the story doesn't bog itself down in philosophising - once the dastardly goings-on are revealed, we move into a good solid base-under-seige plot. The tale has some genuinely disturbing monsters that will hopefully end up being much imitated in the playground come Monday lunchtime.

There are also some not-too-subtle hints to the future. One particular subplot ends with a scene that is basically a great big raspberry to the audience saying "Hah hah! You'll have to keep on watching - and you can start speculating now!"

David Tennant's Tenth Doctor also shows himself to be something more of an action man than his predecessor, and when he gets angry at the things he discovers, he boils with righteous indignation.

The episode isn't without its flaws - various plot points go unexplained or underdeveloped, and we only see a very limited corner of New Earth, though this leaves plenty of scope for return visits. Most of the effects are worthy of the big screen, but a few don't quite live up to the same standard

In turns hilarious, creepy and strangely moving, a solidly entertaining start to the Doctor's

I was watching the last episode of series one on UKgold at the weekend. When rose absorbs the heart of the tardis she says that she can see everything every time and place and every possibility. Then the doctor says that that is what he sees all the time.

Does that mean that Time Lords have Cosmic Awareness like Captain Marvel. Would explain how he always seems to know whats going on.

lars573

She used her time vortex granted god powers to scatter the words "Bad Wolf" through time and space to everywhere she and the Doctor went as a message to herself. That's why you see bad wolf everywhere in the other episodes. It's like she became the big bad wolf to huff and puff and blow the Daleks house down.

It was not like she could control them. The energy from the Tardis took over her really. Much like Phoenix and Jean. :)

Rose has vortex granted god powers?
Had, she looks into the Tardis's time stream and absorbs it. Her will and the will of the Tardis became one. She un-makes the Daleks and saves the Doctor. The reason he regenerates is because he absorbs the Time vortex and sends it home. He managed to get it out of Rose before her head exploded, but not quick enough to not hurt him.

That's cool. What made you think of that?
