If you had to describe Dr. Who to someone who'd never seen it before in a single sentence, what would you say?

Timetraveling man who takes people along with him through time having many adventures, and whenever he dies, he returns to life looking like a different man.

IronLion

that sort of describes it to a tee, but i would add fighting evil and saving the day.

Nope. I'm fairly certain Hartnell didn't run, nor did he have to, what with the sets back then being tiny.

there we go...... I figured as much.... so liking to run can not sum up the WHOLE show as not every doctor liked to run ;)
Thanks Corpulent ;)

so I stand with my last sentence:

James Lance damnit!

Edit - He's not black just awesome.
James Lance.. Now im liking this suggestion. Loved him in Teachers and Moving Wallpaper and he's also the best thing in that steaming pile of **** known as No Heroics on ITV2. He would be a kind off laid back, chilled Doctor.

Interview with David Morrissey.

You’re in the Doctor Who Christmas special. What can we expect?
Well, it was Kylie last year and me this year! I play a character called The Doctor – a man who believes himself to be a Time Lord. It was great to be on board, because I’m a huge fan of the programme and of David Tennant (http://www.whatsonstage.com/index.php?pg=209&name=David%20Tennant). As for any talk of me taking over as the next Doctor, well, if or when they do choose someone, they would have to totally different to David, which I am

Judging from Moffat's commentary from the series 4 DVD's, we will at some point see River Song again. He did kind of give some hints about who she is, but he seems to know exactly who she is and it seems to imply to me we will see her again in an important role in Doctor Who.

I hope we get lots more SPOILERS.

Going by that, shouldn't the Doctor have known that Master would be returning, he wasn't the last, and he was not alone in the first place?

If you remember Utopia, when Martha was telling the Doctor that Professor Yana had a pocket watch exactly like his, the Doctor wasn't exactly happy to think of the possibility of there being another Time Lord. He knew he was going to run into the Master in his current incarnation, and with all the Time Lords dead, he knew there was a high possibility the Professor was really the Master. That's why he became agitated, and told Martha it "depends who it is." Given that the Doctor and Master haven't been able to sense one another's identities before coming face-to-face in the past, all the Doctor could sense was that there was a Time Lord, but likely not who it was. And yet, as soon as the Master hijacked the Doctor's TARDIS and told the Doctor to "use [his] name," the Doctor knew exactly who it was: The Master.

TheVileOne
11-08-2008, 02:10 AM
OK yeah, but I mean, it would be pretty obvious considering the guy locked them out and he knew he was hijacking him at that point. Plus he was already acting like the Master, the Doctor's long time arch-nemesis.

-How did people respond to Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and his departure after only one series?

-Why does Catherine Tate have such great cans??

It was like I said when Billie left the show: Doctor Who was Rose's story. The first episode began with Rose's life, with the Doctor being this mysterious man she followed. Everything about the first series was Rose's journey. It felt like it was her show. Even the final two episodes of the second series were narrated by her. Basically, I think it became hard for fans to imagine the show without her.

Most people became split on Martha/Freema before her first episode even aired. There were promos before the season aired where some people were like "Who does she think she is?" That's not to say there weren't reasons for some of them to hate her throughout the series, but a lot of people weren't going to like her, no matter what.

Donna was awesome.

Are you talking about the premiere of "Voyage of the Damned" tonight on the BBC America? Starting tonight, BBC-A is finally airing Series 4 in the US. Of course, this is months after it already aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, which was only 2 weeks behind the UK's airings.

*sigh*

The worst part is that the DVD is about to come out, meaning BBC America gets its Doctor Who episodes only slightly faster than Public Television.

Only Martha got a lukewarm reception. Fans who supported her last year are now coming out and saying what the rest of us got accused of trolling for. Billie won multiple awards for her time on the show. Catherine would have won the NTA if it was separated into 2 catagories like last year for male and female. As it was she was the only woman on the shortlist for dramatic performance. John Barrowman gets fan girls excited because he is openly gay and flirty. He has the gay community pretty much on his side. Heterosexual men who are open minded think he's a bad ass. Those that are closed minded think hes a pansy and don't care.

In case anyone's interested, here's my review of the series 4 DVD box set which BBC was nice enough to send me early:

http://www.411mania.com/movies/dvd_reviews/89382

I think the reason Jack didn't smex up Donna was because there wasn't really an opportunity to do so. In Torchwood, he and Ianto don't start naked hide and seek until after things settle down when Jack returns.

He should shack up with Sarah Jane Smith sooner or later.

Also my other issue. Where is this unseen beau of Martha Jones? We never see this guy. Even during the Dalek invasion he's nowhere to be found. When Martha wishes to be one place more than anywhere else it is with her mother. OK, I get it. But what about the man she has pledged to spending the rest of her life with? I mean how are we even supposed to assume that Martha's guy survived the invasion?

Manic
11-10-2008, 03:07 AM
Well, we did see Martha's fiance during Series 3. He was Dr. Milligan, the man who helped Martha back into England at the beginning of "Last of the Time Lords" and died when the Master finally captured Martha. At the end of the episode, when Martha was getting ready to tell the Doctor she was leaving the TARDIS, she briefly called a hospital to see if Dr. Peter Milligan worked there. It was implied that Martha was going to make a move on him. Sure enough, when we next see Martha, she's engaged to him.

Whether he survived the Dalek invasion is anyone's guess. He survived the Tocalfane invasion during the "year that never was" for a full year, so he might've made it through the Daleks. He was in Africa at the time, and it looked like the humans the Daleks were harvesting to test the Reality Bomb were coming from England.

Personally, i think we need a stranger looking doctor next. I can see the need for a relatively attractive male lead (to get the attention of young ladies etc) but i'd prefer a Doctor that companions didn't keep falling in love with straight away...
i mean, looks wise William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Colin Baker and Sylvertser McCOy were unique because of their appearance (arguably Hartnell was just old but.... you get the idea)
so whoever's next can't be good looking...personally, i liked the big ears of Eccleston, and the slight "parroty" nose of Tennant... i spose logically the next starge feature would be the eyes, but it kind of hard to find people with strange eyes... maybe giant eyebrows? or no eyebrows? or massive cheekbones? that last one's weird but you get the idea. Basically no ordinary attractive people... unless they're awesome...

i was going to suggest Jimmy Carr, but perhaps he's too weird looking... and a little rude.

Whoever he is, I hope he's not a future incarnation of the Doctor. Neither of those sound particularly appealing to me.

There's apparently an audio play where a future con-man/trickster pretends to be the Doctor.
From the ham-fisted way this imposter was presenting himself this might be a take on that idea.

TheCorpulent1

I'm going to guess that because of these alternate cybermen who escaped from the medusa cascade that Morrisey somehow got a jolt of the doctors memories some way

I'm sure it will be a big technobabble explanation leaving our Doctor imposter saddened that he has to give up all these "memories"

Basically what i'm saying is that a delusional man stumbles upon these memories and thinks he's the doctor and grabs himself a companion.

I wonder what his "tardis" is. Probably a carriage. Although how do you make the "its bigger on the inside" joke

--ADDITIONAL EDIT--
You know what I'll be glad to see go with RTD? The All-Purpose Magical Screwdriver. The average writer uses the sonic screwdriver to open doors and disrupt electronic devices. RTD used it for all kinds of wacky stuff like cutting ropes, searching computer databases, remote controlling the TARDIS, recalling teleports, and reprogramming stuff. As far as RTD was concerned, the screwdriver could do whatever was necessary for whichever corner he'd written himself into.

"Let's see... the Doctor are Martha are being chased by a leather alien through the hospital. How do I get them out of this? Oh, I know! The Doctor can point his screwdriver at an x-ray machine so that it can deliver a dose of radiation higher than an x-ray machine is capable of! But how do I get the Doctor out of this mess, considering radiation poisoning is his most common form of death? Eh, I'll just say that x-radiation is the one type he can just comically shrug off." :facepalm

TheCorpulent1

Yeah, a lot of the plot points are pretty silly when RTD's writing. I'd like the sonic screwdriver to be limited to just interacting with computers, opening doors, and some sonic wonkiness, as its name implies.

dr who has to have a monster every week for say 10 out of the 13 episodes, and say 6 out of those 10 there has to be multiples of those monsters. now then you have to have a setting thats somewhere in earth past or future, or an alien past or future. given the fact that you then have to add in "guest stars"(such as peter kay and chris from skins) then we've to assume that there will be a fair bit of money being stretched between every department...

ttotheusher

Why?

Because, by English television standards, Doctor Who is epic. I'm talking LOTR epic. The magnitude of this production may seem miniscule in comparison to say, something like BSG, but there's nothing like this over here, so we're kinda in-equiped to make it. Plus, you have to think that, nearly every episode has a completely different setting, new cast, new monsters...it all adds up. Especially with today's economy, I imagine the budget is gonna be slashed big time.

TheCorpulent1

They should get Sci Fi to pony up some of their now-free Stargate budget and help out, since they get some decent ratings off the Doctor Who airings over here.

BBC America could co-fund a series of Doctor Who. They co-funded the second series of Torchwood AND Robin Hood.

Also, BBC would probably have a lot more money to spend on Doctor Who if they stopped letting the Top Gear crew wreck every ₤100,000+ car they got for spits and giggles.
"In this episode, the Doctor meets Gandhi--"
"Sorry, can't do it. Jeremy Clarkson drove an Aston Martin into a lake to see if it'd float."

Filming Doctor Who would probably feel like a vacation for him. I saw an interview where he compared the filming of American shows vs. filming British shows. If I went from "4-8 hours a day, 6-13 episodes a year" to "8-12 hours a day, 20-23 episodes a year," I'd flip right the hell out.

I've also found a clip of him playing Marquis de Carabas in Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHpYWy89yVU
Having read Neverwhere's graphic novel before seeing the TV production (which is backwards, I know), I thought Joseph did a good job at de Carabas' creepy arrogance, but I was taken aback at de Carabas being a black man with white hair in one version, and a shadow with white hair in the other.

Not John and Joan's unlived life, the Doctor's fury where he imprisons the family, the Doctor's final conversation with Joan, or Timothy's fate. Isn't that what spoiler tags are for? :cmad: I had to go to another website to find out...

I sugested the new TARDIS to my girlfriend when 10 DT said he was going and she made a good point, wouldn't that be too much for little kids to take? New Doctor, new companion and new TARDIS? Next it'll be all new opening (not just name changes) and new mix of the music. It may as well be a new show.
