I'm looking foward to it, but I'm a little dissapointed in Ecclestons attire. Not eccentric enough for me. Although the movie was a bit rubbish, McGanns outfit would've been cool to use.

The Englishman
02-01-2005, 06:32 PM
Yeah Ecclestons clothing is a bit "ordinary" fron the preview pictures that i've seen.
1 thing that i would like to see is Paul McGann regenerate into Chris Eccleston.

That's yet to be confirmed. I'm beginning to think that we won't see that....well, not in the first episdode anyway....unless it's the worlds best kept secret.

What's all this then about a new Who ?

Is it the same concept as the old show, with updated same characters...
or is it whole new characters and such?

The Englishman
02-02-2005, 04:37 PM
Theres going to be 13x45 minute eppisodes in march but alot of it is still under wraps.... But The Doctor as a new assistent called Rose Tyler and Christopher Eccleston takes over from Paul McGann who was the Doctor in that dreadful TV Movie from a few years back.......oh and The Daleks are back, but these beasts have Rocket boosters so they can go up stairs now.

Actually, they're pretty much the same except they don't wobble as much.

And for the record, the Daleks have been able to go up stairs ever since Remembrance of the Daleks with Sylvester McCoy.

I'm an American Doctor Who fan, and I'm really excited about the new series. My jaw dropped when I heard it was coming back, cause honestly, I really never thought they'd do it. It sucks that they haven't announced an American viewing start date, but I get BBC America, maybe they'll show it on there. I really hope they bring back the Master as a villian. I always liked their Holmes/Moriarty relationship.

As for his attire, I was kind of put off by it at first, but each Doctor is supposed to heavily contrast the others, and that outfit is certainly different from the past.

While I like all of the Doctors, my favorite was Tom Baker. He was just really funny and eccentric. I also really like Patrick Troughton, and its a damn shame most of his episodes are gone forever.

Grant did play the doctor. Two times. He played him in the Comic Relief episode and then at around Christmas 03 he played him in an animated webcast. But I suppose they don't count. But Eccleston is a really good actor. I've got faith in him.

I just finished watching. I don't think I have the words for what I feel right now, but I'll give it my best. I think it's euphoria. Whichever jackass on AICN that said this wasn't Doctor Who can go suck a urinal puck, as he was dead wrong.

Spoilers may follow...

The Doctor was funny, and an absolute joy to watch. Eccleston really made the character extremely likable. Rose is a babe, plain & simple. :) The story was the best Autons story I've seen, and really moved at an enjoyable pace. I loved the Nestene in this episode. Sure it wasn't a glowing orb that sprouted tentacles, but damn did it look badass. Same can be said of the Auton invasion: badass. The chaos of it all was really great. For once an Auton invasion actually felt like an invasion. I'm not too sure if that was explained in an old episode, but what's the deal with the Doctor not being able to save the Auton's planet? Is this something new?

I'm gonna let it sink in, watch it again tomorrow, and come back with more thoughts. But my initial impressions: 5/5 DALEKS!

ok i settled down to watch this episode after being hyped for most of the week, and BOY was i disappointed! after all the controversy about the current writers not being able to garner some of the more memorable aspects of the old series until media intervention (daleks anyone?) i can see why.

the writer takes everything sacred about the good ol doc and has spun out what is essentially a dumbed down version for the younger generation. i grew up watching the doctor in the early evenings after school, and although they were accessible enough to young viewers then they also had the broader appeal to the adults whod grown up years before me watching the show.

after watching this it just seems to me the beeb are targeting a young audience and not bothering with us oldies (and i use that term loosely :) )who have been long term fans of the show. a lot of this episode made it seem ideal for kids tv in that slot just after newsround and before neighbours.

now i can hear the clamours its only the first episode and that it is just a rough cut according to some sources and i admit i am more than willing to see some good come out of this and i hope i can be proved wrong throughout this series!

i wasnt sure on the choice of actor for the doctor and the initial promos for the show gave a hint of a dark somewhat grittier direction for the good doc which has yet to be realised so far. ATM hes just not the doc in my eyes, i can tell he is trying with his different characteristics (e.g."Tom Baker’s mad grin and sudden command, Jon Pertwee’s physicality, Patrick Troughton’s impish side") but he seems to be spreading himself too thin Rose, im not too sure about yet, she comes across as a bit.... meh... so we'll have to see, although the latest rumours have her asking the writer to pen a musical episode in the vein of a buffy episode.....

in the case that the series continues in quality, id hope this series would be retconned by having the real TARDIS land on this so far "fake-ass" doc :P

I kinda liked the new theme...had the sci-fi elements of the orginal combined with epic nature of later themes...

And it will probly sound better when heard in context, ie. with the visuals.

Promising start for this new series...you can see that they rushed to get eveything set in motion (the new Doctor, what a TARDIS is, new companion...etc). Now everything is set, the stories should really kick off...

Stephen Fry
Jeremy Northam
Hugh Laurie (if House gets cancelled)
David Suchet (He can overcome the height)

I was warming to Eccleston as well, i thought he had the potential to be 1 of the best Doctors. David Tennant would be a good choice but i think the most interesting one i've heard is Sean Pertwee, that would be good. Another actor who i think would make a good Doctor is Anthony Stewart Head (Giles from Buffy) if you did'nt know who he was.

I'm glad Eccleston has quit. He was almost playing a pantomime version of the Doctor. Although he is a great actor, he plays the character as a working class, matey bloke who would rather be down the pub than exploring some alien world. And it's not really due to the writing; the Doctor has always been written the same, from the 60's to the present, it's the actor's take on it that differentiates them.

the doctor has always had a different type of personality from one change to the next, look at colin bakers doctor...nasty almost...
as for eccleston,i really like his doctor,he is cheerful and happy...almost eccentric with it too,but as seen in the end of the world he has a serious streak when he killed cassandra at the end she blew up in a sticky mess
its a shame he isnt coming back.

Plenty of ways.

Just tell past stories from Doctor no 8.

Create a temporal paradox so that the Paul McGann version of the Doctor can continue the further adventures.

Create a storyline that has the Doctor come up against a technology that reverts him back to his previous regeneration.

So Eccles is the last Time Lord then, huh? Am I right in assuming that Gallifrey operates outside the normal realms of time, otherwise what's to stop the 9th Doc going and rescuing fellow Lords? It would go a long way to explaining why none of the other Doctors never noticed that his planet had gone bye bye when he visited the far flung future...

McGann coming back is easy. Eccleston sacrificies himself in a sort of cosmic rewind that restores Gallifrey and reverts back him back to McGann.

Galifrey didn't explode in another Doctor's era as far as we know. It was something they wrote into the current script with Eccelston, to create an ongoing storyline that will be slowly unveiled as the series progresses.

Why not Britney? Some of us listen to classical music, and some of that is over a century old. Perhaps there were other musical artifacts stored away, but we happened to drop in on a scene where Britney was the listening choice of the day.

Perhaps the new show is trying to be hip, but it's not the first time this has happened. Dr Who shows have always been a product of their time drawing upon contemporary themes, and popular culture. K9 was created to be the Doctors equivalent of R2D2, during the hey day of the Star Wars phenomena. Jon Pertwee's Doctor knew Venusian Karate, which just so happened to be a time when Bruce Lee, and martial arts films were the next big thing. James Bond was also hip, so Pertwee got all manner of gadgets to use in his shows.

I guess some of you missed the joke, or what had happen previously in the episode.

When the Lady Cassandra, the last human on earth, was introducing the ostrich egg she mentioned that, "legend has it that it had a wingspan of 50 feet and blew fire from its nostrils." And the jukebox, according to the archives, was an, "Ipod, storing classics from humanity's greatest composers."

*cue Tainted Love.*

Thus there's irony and humor in lifeforms from different glaxies gathering for a ceremony to witness a great celestial artistic event while listening to what is believed to be a classic tune, when it's actually ***** on a stick.

I thought it was fairly obvious that the future inaccuracy of human history recording was being played for a larf.

I'm sure the Master will surface again. He is to the Doctor, what Moriaty is to Holmes. His equal, and opposing force who shares a history with the good Doctor.

The last time we saw the Master was in the Paul McGann TV movie, he was sucked into the "Eye of infinity " inside the Cloister Room of the Tardis.

Good point, perhaps a bad comparision, maybe he's the equivalent of the Joker to Batman or perhaps Luthor to Supes.

This is true, we may see some kind of story that completely side steps the events in the McGann movie, and introduces us to a previous incarnation of the Master, maybe a version of the Master that is yet to be assuming the Master can still steal lives like he did in the Movie. I'm pretty sure they will bring back the Master one way of another.

I think the BBC should give Tom his own half an hour show were someone asks him a bunch of ordinary questions and he just gives out his usual types of answers. It'd be rediculously entertaining. For example, this is from an interview a couple of months ago:

Im 33, UK based and always watched it. however my childhood preferences were Star Wars & superheroes. I watched Dr Who every week but it was way down my priorities.

I enjoyed it up until Peter Davison left.................then found Colin Baker irritiating.

The final nail in the coffin though was Sylvester McCoy. We Brit kids knew him as a rather lame, unfunny kids TV character in a poor show called "Jigsaw". He was crap in that and when he took on the Dr, you knew the BBC were barrel scraping.

Make no mistakes, yes the BBc scrapped it BUT the producers killed it really with poor stories, sets and a massively bad choice of Dr's in C.Baker & McCoy.

However my somewhat small "love" was rekindled when Paul McGann did a great job in 96. He really should be brought back for a 2nd chance.

Thanks for the insight into your background. I quite agree with your assessment of the show. The quality of the stories, and the acting went downhill in subsequent seasons from the Colin Baker era ending in Sylvestor McCoy. It was good that they called it quits at that time. The wait was well worth it in the end. A new generation of good writers came onboard, and now large scale special effects are possible on a tv budget. I hope the Star Trek producers take note of this, because that franchise really needs a rest till somebody can breath new life into it.

Don't forget Sylvestor McCoy also got his first break on TV on the show "Vision On" which was a precursor to "Take Hart" and "Hartbeat". He was the resident clown. He chased a furry snake like creature around the studio floor, and up and down the furniture. Judging by those performances I always knew he would go on to become the greatest Doctor of all time. ( sarcasm )

I too would like Paul McGann to reprise his role, but somehow I think he may turn down down any offer they give him now after being snubbed, and side stepped by the Beeb who prefered to go with a new actor in the role instead.

( sarcasm )

From that knowledge I take it that you are in the UK then, mate ?

I liked McCoy once he got settled in. He's said since in interviews that he wasn't sure what to do with the part at first, but when then realised he wanted a darker Doctor. I think this is proven by his performance, which improved greatly once he acquired Ace and lost Mel. Compare him in the dire Time and the Rani with the wonderful Curse of Fenric. Or better yet compare his performance in Death Comes To Time or the Big Finish productions with any of his earlier TV stuff. Huge improvement.

Huge improvement, but he still lacked something the previous Doctors had, and that was screen presence. He never owned the role like Pertwee or Tom Baker did. They were totally believable because they were strong personalities, confident in their choices, even when it came to script ammendments.

Pertwee, and Baker had a slippery start, but even those embrionic perfomances outshone anything McCoy did. The writing had turned campy, and one dimensional. Even McCoy's best intentions couldn't have overcome those obstacles, no matter how much he became one with the character he portrayed.

David Tennant Is... Doctor Who!

http://images.gallifreyone.com/newsgraphics/davidtennant2.jpg

David Tennant, a rumored candidate for the role for the past several weeks in the wake of Christopher Eccleston's highly-publicized departure, will play the tenth incarnation of the Doctor for the second season of Doctor Who, as revealed by the BBC Press Office on Saturday morning in an official press release.

David Tennant confirmed as the tenth Doctor Who

David Tennant is confirmed as the tenth Doctor Who, it was announced today by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning, following the recommissioning of the second series.

Tennant, whose recent credits include BBC THREE's critically-acclaimed drama series Casanova, BBC ONE's Blackpool and He Knew He Was Right, will star alongside Billie Piper who returns as Rose Tyler.

Julie Gardner, BBC Head of Drama, Wales says: "Christopher Eccleston has given an exceptional performance as the ninth Doctor.

"David Tennant is a great actor who will build on the excellent work already done by Christopher in establishing Doctor Who for a new generation."

David Tennant says: "I am delighted, excited and honoured to be the tenth Doctor!

"I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own TARDIS.

"Russell T Davies is one of the best writers television has ever had, and I'm chuffed to bits to get the opportunity to work with him again.

"I'm also really looking forward to working with Billie Piper who is so great as Rose.

"Taking over from Chris is a daunting prospect; he has done a fantastic job of reinventing the Doctor for a new generation and is a very tough act to follow."

Executive producer/writer Russell T Davies adds: "Christopher Eccelston's wonderful Doctor has reinvented the role, so that it now appeals to the best actors in the land.

"I'm already writing David's first new adventure on board the TARDIS!

"Regeneration is a huge part of the programme's mythology, and I'm delighted that new, young viewers can now have the complete Doctor Who experience, as they witness their hero change his face!"

A new 13-part adventure and Christmas special begins filming in Cardiff in the summer for transmission on BBC ONE.

Thing is though, his primary audience , The UK, knew him as a failed comedian /actor and were prejudiced from the start. He could never win.

The Tardis doesn't always work properly, so it's better for the good Doctor to solve the problems right there, and then while encountering them.

Impossible. Did you notice the Doctor's mad dash to get to Rose before she came into contact with her mum? This was because once she was seen by someone here she had impinged on this timeline and any attempt to go back to the right time would cause a paradox.

last saturday's episode probably was the most flawed. fart jokes. rose calling the doctor gay. no explanation of why they didn't just go back a year. and i thought the aliens could have been better, too. the big ben thing was good though, and the pig. that guy was so cute!

The Darlek absorbed roses DNA pattern to survive/re-engerise it self, so of course it gained her emotions over time, hence why it understood "the blackness" at the end. my guess is if darleks suffered such amount of damage and survived they would use there own dna for the purpouses of re-engergising
