Just five? Hmm.. It'll be tough.

Big Fish - Wonderful, wonderful movie. It's truly a masterpiece. A beautiful, funny, touching story. Replay value is unchallenged.

Psycho Beach Party - This movie is such a gem. I feel lucky to have seen it. Hilarious. Wonderful. Unique.

Freeway - This movie is old school Reese Witherspoon. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. It's so twisted.

Citizen Ruth - This movie is brilliant. It's fascinating, really. It's almost a character study, a social commentary, and a hilarious comedy.

Election - What can I say about Election? Freakin' funny as hell, man. Reese Witherspoon, in this and Freeway, rules. She should do more movies like this. This movie is fantastically representative of high school.

League of Their Own - Original favorite movie of all time. I've loved this movie since I was little. Can't get tired of it, gets me every time.

Radio Flyer - First movie to ever make me cry. Beautiful, sad story. Really good movie to watch as a kid, then as an adult. It fills you with nostalgia.

Twin Falls Idaho - One of the saddest movies I've ever seen. Lovely movie about the human condition, the human spirit, and love and loss.

My Life Without Me - Probably very near the top of my list. I love this movie so much. So sad. So well acted. Brilliant.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space - What can I say? Don't judge me, this is a classic!

Maria Full of Grace - Gotta have it on this list. It affected me deeply. I was on my period, hungover, sleep deprived, high and I haven't seen it since. I love this movie. Very sad.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - You know it. That scene, in the snow? Gorgeous. A masterpiece.

The Virgin Suicides - Such a depressing movie....but so beautiful in its direction and dialogue.

Lost In Translation - This movie is just....moving. Beautiful in every sense of the word.

Garden State - Fantastic movie. Zach Braff is super talented. Very good writing, even better soundtrack. Heartwrenching music.

Ghost World - Love this movie. So true to life and hilarious. One of my dearest favorites.

Kills Bills - Masterpiece. It was fluid art, on film. Truly beautiful movie. Unmatched in so many ways.

Donnie Darko - Cliche, I know. But the way this movie was directed. The acting. The dialogue. It all comes together to form something so much bigger.

The Safety of Objects - Last but not least, this movie is so sad, so uplifting, so passionate. It's really just a great character study. I highly recommend any movie on this list.

I've been watching movies since I was a kid, and I've come to truly appreciate it. These are just some movies I've come off the top of my head with.

Not in order. Never in order. Order is not order.

1. Underworld- The film that made me want to be a thirteen year old goth.

2. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride- I cried for some reason

3. Cursed- Actually pretty funny

4. Underworld:Evolution- It's educational! It's violent! But mostly violent! Yay, violence!

5.Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events- Not as faithful to the books as I would have liked, really... but still decent

The list of honorable mentions would go on and cover many that have already been stated, such as starwars, lord of the rings, memento, donnie darko, gladiator, shawshank redemption, and one that wasnt mentioned, minority report.

what kills me about you people is that some movies are so popular but I think they really shouldn't be. a clockwork orange is debatable as it is a really intelligent film it is also very disturbing, I have trouble believing that some would put it on their top 10. Pulp fiction is another one, i hate that stupid pointless movie. yeah you heard me! explain to me why that one is a good movie?

5. Batman Begins
4. Superman the Movie
3. The Bourne Identity
2. Braveheart
1. The Matrix

The list of honorable mentions would go on and cover many that have already been stated, such as starwars, lord of the rings, memento, donnie darko, gladiator, shawshank redemption, and one that wasnt mentioned, minority report.

what kills me about you people is that some movies are so popular but I think they really shouldn't be. a clockwork orang is debatable as it is a really intelligent film it is also very disturbing, I have trouble believing that some would put it on their top 10. Pulp fiction is another one, i hate that stupid pointless movie. yeah you heard me! explain to me why that one is a good movie?

LoL.

Are you joking?

You do realize that your list of "good movies that speak to you personally" are far more popular, blockbuster type movies than Clockwork Orange and Pulp Fiction, right? Some people tend to pick films that challenge and engage them(like say, Clockwork Orange & Pulp Fiction) over action films where you pretty much leave your brain at the door. If you really think Pulp Fiction is stupid and pointless, I suggest you wait a couple of years, perhaps at least until you have to start shaving, and then try watching it again. It's one thing to not like a movie, it's quite another to dismiss it because you're a moron :cwink:

oy!

I was try to make a point, one that was missed apparently. Let me explain I have no problem respecting films that challenge people on an intellectual field. But as I recall this was a thread that describes our favorite films, not what we thought were the greatest films. What I am trying to say is SO WHAT??? so what if my favorite films are "more popular, blockbuster type movies". I used to go to Loyola Marymount University where the films school is very renouned and every one would routinely say that their favorite films were Citizen Cane and the Godfather. My friend, afilm major, told me once her favorite movie was the birth of a nation, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Don't get me wrong I like to be intellectually challenged and I can respect many classic films. But was that really the film she loved to watch over and over again that she derived so much enjoyment from. If it was then I was gravely mistaken as to the kind of person she was. And after much further questioning I found her favorite film was the princess bride. A far inferior film when compared to the others she listed off like a trained machine.

I tire of this. We should never check our brains at the door, but shouldn't we also enjoy what we are watching?

If I don't like a film the critics love and with good reason shouldn't I be able to say so without being insulted?

Are there somethings that are perhaps popular with cause? Things like Gone with the Wind? or The Godfather?

In defense of my list: Superman was one of the first films I ever watched and remembered, It made me want to aspire to be like him. Batman Begins was the story of a man who tries to affect change in an everyday realistic world and does it so as one of my childhood memories. Bourne is in my opinion an example of the moral conscience in the real world and how important it is. Braveheart is one of the best examples of manhood in cinema today. But for me the Matrix beats it all. Taking Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and just about every philosophy and political structure and rolling it into a very appealling action film. I film I can take meaning from and also enjoy.

Thats where I think the problem lies. In our attempt to get away from brainless crap we run toward boring crap. There has to be some sort of medium in between. Lets also be honest, we are on superherohype messageboards shouldn't we be able to state that we love superhero movies without being insulted for not liking that which is crtically acclaimed.

Bullet a couple of posts earlier says he hopes to see a lot of goodfellas and godfather. I love those films, but I hope to see a much more variety as everyone is different and not everyone cares what AFI or the academy awards tells us to like.

As for Kubrick and Tarantino, I really dislike their style. And I'm not sure it's psychologically healthy to always be watching those types of films. This is why I am surprised to see that people have put it on their favorite films. I never stated that I didn't respect those films, with the exception of Pulp Fiction that is. Tarantino is renouned for his great realistic characters....that I don't relate to one little bit. So which should I care about something that has no significance to me. So many guys I know tell me that the Godfather is the greatest film ever. Not for me. And if thats ignorance well then I welcome it.

But I come from a place where disagreement isn't ignorance.

edit: i forgot to add fight club and the departed to my list

Well, you post a list of yor favourite movies. And behind the title you post a quick reason to why you think the movie is good. Well, obviously, you think The Departed is a great movie -- since you placed it a the #1 spot in your list. And then, the explanation you give to why it's great is ''Just pure greatness and just great all around'', which in a way is just repeating the opinion -- it's great, because it's great.

The Departed- It has been my favorite film since I've seen it, and will probably be my favorite for a long time. I love the scene when Costello has Costigan alone and is eating dinner with him, and talking to him about there being a rat. Whenever I watch this movie, I am on the edge of my seat the whole time, even though I've seen the movie tons of times.

Finding Nemo- Amazing animation. I love the sense of adventure I feel when watching the movie. This is probably the dvd that I watch the most. It never gets old. I love the way the different fish are portrayed (The sharks in the meeting trying to stop eating fish, the group of fish giving them directions, and It always amuses me when I see the swordfish fencing). This movie has a lot of real emotion and suspense as well. To me, this is one of the most brilliant movies ever made.

Spider-man 2- This is the perfect comic book adaptation to me. It makes you truly feel the weight of being a super-hero. This movie made me really feel for Peter. The ending of the movie probably had one of the biggest payoffs for me, when Peter and MJ FINALLY get together. The train sequence is probably one of my favorite scenes in any movie.

The Incredibles: Amazing. One of the best superhero movies out there. It is really funny, and the animation blows me away. It has some really cool fight scenes also. I think it is way better than most of the comic book films coming out now.

The Empire Strikes Back- The best part of one of the best trilogies of all time. I remember the first time I saw the trilogy for the first time as a little kid, and I was left in so much suspense after Han was put in carbonite. He was the coolest person in the world for me when I was between the ages of 8 and 15. One of my favorite lines in any movie:
Leia: I love you
Han: I know (as he is being lowered into carbonite)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: One of the best book adaptations on film that truly captures the essence of one of my favorite book series. I love the books, and this is the only movie that I loved as much as the book. (Also, Goblet of Fire is my favorite HP book)

Toy Story: I grew up watching this movie. It has a lot of sentimental value. I even saw Toy Story on Ice as a kid. I love this movie now as much as I did when I first saw it.

Kill Bill: There is so much that is good in this movie, I don't know where to start.

Cinderella Man : A very excellent movie.

Saving Private Ryan: This movie is really sad, and shows the brutality of war.
